From the cover: Jamie and his grandpa are best friends. They tell jokes to each other, take walks in the mountains, and throw rocks in the water. In the winter, they eat apples together in front of the fireplace. At night, they look at their special wishing star, on which they've each made a secret wish. One day, Jamie sees an ambulance take his grandpa away. That evening, his mother tells Jamie that Grandpa has died. Jamie feels angry and lonely. Going to the funeral later just makes him feel worse. Finally, though, he learns that Grandpa and he are still best friends. And most wonderful of all, Grandpa's secret wish has come true. This is a moving story about love between the young and old, about death, and about eternity.

Fans of Conan Doyle's adventure fiction now have an important reference to consult when considering his works and settings: a survey of the Napoleonic era which influenced Doyle to create the character of one Brigadier Gerard, whose adventures ran after Holmes had been killed off in 1893. This study considers all his Napoleonic works, analyzing methods and plots alike.

This is a wonderful first book to the trilogy of The Great Tree of Avalon. I have purchased the second book and can't wait to read it. I bought this book for my son because the author was at a conference I was attending and signing autographs. I thought an autographed book would be a unique gift. My son read it and loved it so I decided to read it also. I was immediately drawn into the story and could identify with the characters. I was kept guessing until the end whether Tam was the heir of Merlin or the child of the dark prophesy. Will he be able to change what is prophesied, as the Lady of the Lake told him? Will he be able to save Avalon? I can't wait to read the next book to find out what is in store for Tam.

A delightful read...

Lilly Setterdahl's childhood story is an account of her family's life in neutral Sweden of World War II, where the threat of war hovered just across their borders with Norway, Finland, and across the straits in Denmark. She intertwines memories of her own neighborhood with the larger story of Sweden's efforts to remain free of foreign entanglements, while still offering a secure life to her citizens during very frightening times. It is a delightful read, whether as a Swede, Swedish-American or World War II historian. - John E. Norton - You may also enjoy Lilly's novel Maiden of the Titanic

I have read several Arkham House books, but this one remains closest to my heart.

Councelman's stories withstand the test of time, and are as moody and haunting today as they were in the early years of the last century. A delightfuly macabre choice of tales, with no disappointing filler-type stories that are found in so many collections of the supernatural.

This collection includes the classic "The Three Marked Pennies," as well as "The Unwanted," "The Shot-Tower Ghost," "Night Court," "The Monkey Spoons," "The Smiling Face," "A Death Crown for Mr. Hapworthy," "The Black Stone Statue," "Seventh Sister," "Parasite Mansion," "The Green Window," "The Tree's Wife," "Twister," and "A Handful of Silver."

Currently the book is still in print, so there is no need to buy a supposedly "collectible" edition.

As a former resident of Richmond, I know that spooky stuff abounds in this quiet southern city and Scott and Sandi Bergman do a great job of bringing those classic ghost tales to life. I guarantee you will have goosebumps hearing some of these creepy stories. And I can't wait to return to Richmond to go on one of their ghost tours!

I read 'The Haunting of Briar Rose' over two years ago and remember it as being my favorite Silhouette ever. The detail kept me glued to the book. I recommend it for any avid Silhouette reader, although it can be enjoyed by everyone--each and every friend I have agrees.
