Bob's Best Yet!Review Date: 2005-04-13
And just when I thought that he couldn't improve on his previous three Navy fghter pilot Brick Maxwell novels.
If Shadows isn't his best yet, I'll miss my bet.
This writer has a way of spinning a yarn that not only speaks of his understanding of military flying, because he has done it himself - but his skill in developing a barn burner of an ongoing saga full of riveting combat scenes and intrigue that won't let you put the book down.
Stephen Coonts has said gf Gandt's writing... "the next best thing to being on the cockpit" - and having been in that fighter cockpit myself, I heartily agree ....
Hard charging right to the endReview Date: 2005-06-18
This book just took off. A navy fighter pilot lost over Iraq during the opening hours of Desert Storm is declared KIA, and Saddam does nothing to change anyone's mind. A corrupt CIA station chief knows that Raz Rasmussen is still alive, but he has his own agenda - it doesn't include rescuing an American POW.
Fast forward to the present day WOT, and the rumors that someone is holding an American POW. Brick Maxwell has to watch his six, not just for roving Iranian fighters and shoddy aircraft maintenance, but for the CIA who doesn't want him bring his squadron mate home.
This book has the right amount of action and pacing to make it a winner.
A great read.

STUNNING WRITINGReview Date: 2002-12-18
Sheila comes to work at the dairy farm run by the Cotton family, and soon becomes the Best Friend of ten-year-old Annette (her caps) - the two girls grow as close as family, and at one point Annette's mother, Rowena, comments that `Annette loves Sheila like a blood sister'. Sheila is seemingly completely without a formal education - she comes from a family of numberless children, loomed over by her brutal father. The beatings - and other abuse - she receives from him on a regular basis are the central reason in her leaving home, to seek work and shelter at the Cottons'. She is also possessed of a physical anomaly - a hump on her back - although she never lets it interfere with her image of herself or the way in which she attempts to live her life. It is at the Cottons' dairy, where she works, that she meets Stoney Barnes - despite her `deformity', he falls in love with her (and she with him), and after a short courtship, they marry. The abuse she suffered at the hands of her father continues sporadically - and Stoney is guilty of inflicting physical pain on her as well. When he reports Sheila missing early one morning, and her body is found in the Cottons' cornfield, the investigation that ensues reveals things about almost everyone involved that each one would have most certainly preferred to be left in the dark. The revelations strain friends and family and community - the outcome is both expected and surprising, and soul shaking.
The story unfolds gracefully through various viewpoints - a technique that Marshall employs extremely well. The author endows each of the characters with a distinctive personality and - even more importantly, I think - a unique, completely believable voice. Rather than simply describe each character to the reader, the author skillfully allows them to illuminate not only themselves but also each other. Their narratives - which vary in length, but grow shorter and switch back and forth more in the second half of the book - overlap in both subjects and time frames, much as if the reader were privy to individual tellings of the same story, walking from room to room, eavesdropping. There is a subtlety in Marshall's method here that is a wonder to behold - things are revealed to the reader as they are revealed to those in the story, allowing the mysterious aspects of Sheila's brutal murder to be opened like a flower. The suspense is palpable and deftly controlled.
There are lessons to be learned here - as well as a story that entertains - about a plethora of subjects: love, honor, family, pain, abuse, friendship, faith, race, healing, and more...including magic. I'm not speaking of the type of magic that is performed on the stage - I'm speaking of the more indefinable magic that lives and breathes in the touch of a friend's hand, in the stories they share that delight and instruct, in the pain that we cause each other and in the healing we can inspire. If this leads you to believe that this is a soporific tale, don't be deceived - this is fine writing of the highest order, and a story that reveals not only the innermost workings of its characters, but of all of us.

And I never buy hardcovers.Review Date: 2008-06-23
I decided that if the book was good, I'd review it, and if it was bad that I would just remain politely tacit. I really enjoyed it, so here's my plug. It's clear that I'm going to be picking up the sequels when they come out (which means hardcover, and I never buy hardcover).
I love Chariss, the main character. I was interested in her story within a couple of pages, and by page 19 I realized I was already sucked in. I love her irreverent playfulness. She is both vulnerable and tough.
I found the world enjoyingly different than the other fantasy I read, and yet it felt very real right away. That the gods sometimes choose to walk among the mortals, and are gods but somehow not entirely invulnerable, was very interesting.
If you like fantasy, and especially if you want your fantasy to offer a woman lead character, I'd definitely recommend "Choices Meant for Gods" even if it means you grab them all in hardcover and they use up that precious bookshelf space in your library.
Fantasy DebutReview Date: 2007-12-29
The pantheon of characters is excellent, with those you love, those you hate, and those you love to hate.
Chariss is a strong heroine, who in the spirit of other fine fantasy heroines, does not yet know her own strengths.
Nigel is intriguing and promises only to get stronger as his own destiny unfurls.
Just enough foreshadowing of future events to keep us wanting to know (and buy!) what comes next.

Kane, trying to shake off pursuers in frozen weather is helped to shelter by a woman.
However, her father's manor will come under assault by a werewolf.
3.5 out of 5
A crusading general:
"For several years he had marched forth against petty tyrants, evil wizards, robber barons, outlaw packs, and monsters human and inhuman. Always he had vanquished evil in the name of good, shackled chaos with law. And now he rode against Kane, a name that had always fascinated him, but which he had half regarded as legendary, until he began to realize the truth that lay in the fantastic tales of this man."
Trapping Kane in a town he knows, with only 9 healthy men left after taking out an ogre stronghold, not the best of ideas.

FROM BACK COVERReview Date: 2008-04-12
A quest that took Kane into forbidden wastelands, and tested his killer skills against the most brutal forces ever summoned against a single man.
Kane faced death duels in strange swamps, assassins' attacks, the heart-freezing terror of the werewolf - and lived to laugh at danger.
But he knew he'd lost his strength, and perhaps his soul, when he entered the erotic web of the vampire...

Genius wrapped up inside a Frazetta cover...Review Date: 2006-02-08
Flat out.
With the possible exception of some of Robert E. Howard's work, dark fantasy just doesn't get any better than the three stories of Kane compiled and presented here.
Hunt all of Wagner's books down, spend the money (these Warner paperbacks are long out of print, and I believe the two recent compilations from Night Shade Books are now fetching outrageous prices) and spend some long, sleepless nights wrapped in devilish glee...

3rd Edition Magic RulesbookReview Date: 2003-11-27
3rd edition and its updates however, seemed to consolidate and condense better, focusing on game mechanics and rules rather than pictures and colorful quotes from fictional characters.
Magic in the Shadows is no exception, as it compiles all three previous magic books, updates their mechanics, and also introduces new 3rd edition magic rules, skills, and abilities. Although the 3rd edition books are not as colorful or fun to read as previous books, they do a much better job of actually providing rules and mechanics to streamline your game.
This book is a must have for anyone with "awakened" characters, because it covers the rules for initiation, a process that makes a magical character uber-powerful.

Inspiring book for the beginner shade gardenerReview Date: 2007-07-22
The small, close-up photos in the plant index are great for showing detail, but are not so great at giving the reader an idea of what the whole plant looks like, how it sits, whether it is compact or expansive, etc. As a beginning gardener I had to look elsewhere for more "in context" photos of the plants.
A chapter on shrubs for shade would also have been helpful.
These gripes aside, I've found this book to be a great help in designing my urban shade garden and would recommend to any beginner gardener looking for inspiration.
