A wonderfully written book. Kate Kitchen has captured the simple life of this small town family with a young girl that is distined for glory. It makes you want to think of this young beauty as your own daughter. Kate writes this story with enough spice that it will hold your attention and keep you wondering what's next. I couldn't put it down. It's the kind of book you want to spend the weekend with. You will love it.

FAMILY SHADOWS by Kate Kitchen is a deeply personal story of raw human emotions describing a girl's evolution into womanhood. The honest vulnerability of the heroin, as she expresses her multiple love stories intertwined with overpowering disappointments, is riveting reading. As the strength of character of Elizabeth grows out of the pages of this beautifully crafted novel, one anticipates an ending of hope and good news. What one gets is a very surprising ending that upon reflection is much better than the one expected by the reader. A therapeutically healing novel well worthy of any quiet evening's read.

What a great story.

This is a great book, dealing with such issues as facing the truth, love, forgiveness, and making things right. The characters were brilliantly created, and it shows that it is never too late to right wrongs and to appreciate all of the blessings we have been given.

One of her Best!

I love all of Rachel's books. While at a booksigning, she said she thought this one was one of her best works. I was skeptical, but I have to agree. Great characters, as usual, and with her unique human touch to them that I love. Powerful writing! I didn't want to put it down once I started, and couldn't toward the end (who needs sleep?).

It is the second in this new "series", but it can be read as a "stand alone" without missing anything. I also recommend the first one, Flying Home, and just about any of her others.Flying Home Winter Fire

Definitely worth reading!!

Quiet satisfaction in a few moments of wonder and awe

I have purchased, and read, Christopher Cunningham's
beautifully presented book of poetry, and I have been moved
to offer a few words about this book published by sunnyoutside.

From the first touch, there is something unique about
Flowers in the Shadow of the Storm. There are certain
"Feels" to books. This book has the feel of poetry in the
rough cut paper cover. Then seeing and feeling the cover,
individually hand painted by the author on each book.

Yes, you will say. This is not an ordinary book. This is a
book which has been presented with passion, and guts.

When was the last time you held a book with a hand painted
cover?

But it's true you cannot judge a book by its cover, and
inside are worlds the author has given us, rewarding the
trust the reader has offered to the author.

Poetry captures a moment, and poems share a vision
an author has visited with their trusting readers.

Poetry is simple. And those best at it make it look easy.
Christopher Cunningham makes it look effortless. But, hey?
Don't be fooled, there is much work in bringing forth a
collection such as been presented in:

Flowers in the Shadow of the Storm

Look at the strength of: as the night falls away

I'm touched by moments barely noticed, and brought forth
with simplicity, and clarity. Christopher Cunningham
delivers the goods with a shy smile, and a tip of the hat,
and I thank him for his hard work.

Working class poetry for the world

Cunningham is an independent press poet with an amazing aptitude for innovative and novel metaphors and analogies. His words sing with imagery, and his poems speak to the many vagaries and banalities of life. These are working class poems for the world.
Flowers in the Shadow of the Storm is a gorgeous collection complete with original cover art by the poet. But, it's the words inside, the sentiments and philosophies that are most important.

If you are a lover of poetry, or merely a fan of fresh ways of looking at the world; or, if you are in need of something powerful to help you through a difficult time (the ultimate reason poetry exists), then you can't do much better than this collection.

A Passion for Poetry and Presentation

Review Date: 2007-06-09
Christopher Cunningham has a passion for the preservation of the poem in new era that has seen hundreds of here-today-gone-tomorrow, "underground" lit zines, and myspace blogs. In a world of watered down, vulgar for the sake being vulgar poetry, Cunningham speaks with grace and clarity. He uses simple moments in time to convey the larger lesson of life.

His work is so much more then simply words on a page, he carefully creates an entire package, by hand painting the storm clouds on each and every cover of this book. Each of his previously releases also have this personal touch that truly enhances his connection to his readers. In a recent interview with What to Wear During an Orange Alert, Christopher had this to say about the presentation of his poetry, "a book is a totality of expression, in my view. the whole thing should be a poem. that's why I like to go the extra mile... I want the book to be something I'm proud of all the way around."

This book is beautiful cover to cover, but a few of my personal favorites are; Grown Numb, A Time of Rest, and Dreaming of a Good Life.

Incredible blend of Photography and Writing

Weller's prose and photography make this book an often-visited favorite of mine. His emotive musings fuse with incredible photography to give a sense of place to a destination that may seem desolate to some, but which teems with unique and tenuous life.

Excellent Photography - Remarkable Journey

The first thing that struck me about this book was the depth of Weller's exploration of Great Sand Dunes National Park. His images feature all seasons, a wide variety of subjects, and capture the many moods and emotions of this national treasure. As you delve into the book and read Weller's essays, he takes you on a virtual journey through the wilderness of the park - you can practically feel the sand in your fingernails and eyes; feel the rain of a summer storm; and step out of your home into an entirely different world. I highly recommend this book, both for its photography, and for Weller's writing.

Great Sand Dunes National Park: Between Light And Shadow is a collection of essays and photographs by Boulder, Colorado-based nature photographer John B. Weller and showcases the landscapes of the Great Sand Dunes National Park. The truly breathtaking, full-color images of sand dunes, tracks, and wildlife are perfectly complemented by the brief reflective pieces describing the author's journey and experiences. Great Sand Dunes National Park reveals captivating beauty amid shifting sands and seasons; it is exceptionally easy to lose oneself in the panoramic interplays of light, shadow, sand, and natural life. A "must-have" for nature and environmental photography collections.

This is a tremendously well written book about the authors life in and around Tofino, BC, in the 90's. The amazing good times and bad times he faced are so well written, that you feel it as though you were there. If you ever wanted your life put into perspective get this one. I can't beleive he hasn't published anything since! Yet, hopefully.

This volume which is surrounded by the Grasscutter stories has become one of my favorites.

The introduction of the Inspector makes this book, the combination of the mystery stories and the interplay between the two characters are done well, particularly the moments where they are on opposite paths.

Of all the volumes that are not specifically a single story this one is the most cohesive, it is worth your money as is anything by Sakai.

Sakai's usual excellence.

Review Date: 2004-04-15
The stories involving the two characters on the cover (Usagi and Inspector Ishida) are a couple of my favourite Usagi tales. In them, Usagi teams with Ishida to investigate a few murders. My fondness for these stories derives from my penchant for murder mysteries in general, and these are interesting. One of the mysteries is rather short and not too mysterious for the reader, while the other is more lengthy and might surprise some, especially if one is willing to be drawn into the world Sakai has created.

As well, like most of the trade paperback collections, there are a number of stories that stand alone, and these are very good too. Particularly good is one where Usagi encounters the son of a dead comrade.

Overall, another solid book in a series that is rapidly closing in on the 20th collection. (#18 to be released in a few months.) I'd still recommend book 6 as the best introduction to the series, but once you're hooked, you'll want this one along with all the rest.

Dark Shadows, Darker Plots

Review Date: 2001-11-12
Truly one of the great works of comic fiction, Grey Shadows shows us a world, that while alien, becomes almost instantly familiar. The characters are likable and charismatic, but it is the complex interweaving plot and powerful themes of honor and compassion that really make this book a joy. The simplistic artwork initially give it a childish look untill you get used to it. The expressions wouldn't be nearly as intricate if Mr. Sakai had gone for a more detailed style of drawing though.

Once you begin to read Allen's personal story you will not be able to put it down. It is very well written. It truly is a motivational story of triumph and one that I will treasure and share with my children. It provides a unique perspective on a very difficult time period. If you have read "Night" by Elie Wiesell, "The Diary Of Anne Frank" , or "Survival In Auschwitz" by Primo Levi, reading this will provide a very different perspective of life as a Jew in hiding in rural Poland during the early to mid 1940's.

a sensitive story

This is a very unusual story written with a good deal of sensitivity. Although I am not sure of the absolute accuracy of the portrayal of a "private orphanage" in Depression Era USA, the story is not improbable. It is exciting enough to keep the interest of a child, but psychologically perceptive enough to intrigue adults. I read it with great pleasure, and passed it on to my twelve-year-old grandson. I hope he enjoys it as much as I did.

I tried to read this story through the eyes of a teacher, but the tale was so enjoyable, I had to continually remind myself to be more analytical. I gave up after two chapters and relished the rest of my time with Jessie Bell and crew.
According to the Fry Readability Graph, "Treasures" is written at a 4th to low 5th grade reading level. I think that's perfect, since many girls (and hopefully some open-minded boys) that age will quickly become engaged in the adventures of the characters.
Though the time period and circumstance of the book's heroines may be hard for today's youth to imagine, their individual longings and friendships are definitely not.
Our school has "curl up and read" time and I can visualize Mr. Harmon's book among the jumble of blanket, snack and pillow brought by a student for those moments.
Some of the phrasing and descriptive language will be lost on a young reader, but an adult will certainly appreciate Mr. Harmon's ability to create a vivid image in a way that is both captivating and touching. A writing strength I noticed is the way the author provides more than one window to view what he describes: using, in turn, terminology that adult readers can savor and then crafting sentences for young readers to comprehend. Throughout the book, this type of writing exposes young minds to a variety of styles, phrases and vocabulary.
This book would make a wonderful read-aloud book for classroom or bedtime and an excellent addition to any library.

Wow - what a fun story to read. I'm in my late 40'2 and even though it was written for a younger audience, I found it impossible to put the book down. The details in the story make you feel like you are part of it and you want to help the young herion as she goes through her crusade.

It is a great way for parents to connect with their young children. It can be read at bedtime and you won't need to worry about them having nightmares. The only drawback is that your children won't let you stop until you have finished the book, so remember to start early in the evening.

I highly recommend it for anyone who loves a feel good story.

I'm not sure how long I've had this book. I'm not even sure how it came to be in my possession. But it is the most meaningful book I have on the purposes of the temple and how to gain more from temple ordinances. Brother Wilcox has assembled a thorough collection of quotes and personal anecdotes that bring his points home in such an understandable and motivating way. Particularly interesting to me were two items: first, the stories of his ancestors and his portrayal of their feelings at having their names found so their temple work could be completed; and second, the inspiring collection of quotes from modern prophets and apostles regarding the protection to be found through temple work. We worry so much today about how to keep our families safe, and think there must be some complicated answer. The actual answer is quite simple--attend the temple more often, and bring more of the power of our Savior into our lives.
