Practical healing that really works!Review Date: 2001-11-15
Bishop has done a wonderful job of helping me understand why my life is the way that it is and offers practical tools to change it. His insights and exercises are so simple yet powerful. I would call them revolutionary. My life has changed as a result and I am forever grateful.
As you have already guessed, I heartily reccomend this book for anyone interested in healing themselves or others, or to simply gain valuable insight into the human mind.

I had no idea that such persecution went on in France in the 1600's. I found it very intriguing to "experience" through this story what it was like to be persecuted simply for believing a different doctrine. A dramatic story of love, betrayal, and persecution!
This is a powerful, fast-paced story that kept me guessing what might happen until the very end. I thoroughly enjoyed this family's story. I can hardly wait to read the next book in the series! I want to know how things turn out for each of the family members. I highly recommend In the Shadow of the Sun King.

"What Americans Do Not Understand"Review Date: 2002-05-16
After reading this book, I tend to "get on my soapbox" to help people understand what few choices, the Russian people ever had in the outcomes of their lives! I never knew this before purchasing and reading Mr. Lincoln's book!
If you cannot be convinced by the poverty imposed on the Russians through Mr. Lincoln's words, you will be convinced by the heart-wrenching photographs; the children who appear as hopeless, hovels designed as homes with animals living within, death from starvation was not uncommon. And all the time, Russia refused (those in power prior to the Revolution)to feed her people, wheat was being shipped to other European countries.
And the Russians never questioned the motives of the Tsar; after the Revolution, they still starved and were murdered by Stalin and Hitler.
We need to change our attitudes and this book did it for me.
Terrific !Review Date: 2002-04-22
We see portraits of Tsar Alexander III, Nicholas II, Pobedonostsev, Lenin, Rasputin, and a host of other generals, officials and ordinary people who shaped that era.
We get an insider's look at what life was like in a peasant community, inside the peasant's izba or house, and their attitudes towards schooling, medicine and religion. We go inside the growing factories and the slums the workers inhabited in the cities with rapidly developing industry. We see the new nobility of the industrial barons, the revolutionaries fighting the tsarist autocracy, the defenders of the Old Order...all come to life in these pages.
Graphic descriptions are given of the vicious pogroms against Jews. The impact of the Trans-Siberian Railroad in both economic and a political aspects is covered. The 1904 war with Japan is there with its criminally incompetent generals and and admirals and the war's impact on the development of the Revolution of 1905 as well as the mood of the populace as the nations slides toward the Great War.
This well written, illuminating, detailed and well documented book is a classic work on the Russian society of those years and fleshes out the soul of Russia as few other books do. 16 pages of photos. Highly recommended.
Very informative!!Review Date: 2005-10-18
-It is written in a wonderful language - very easy to read, yet directed towards scholars.
-History is divided into chapters that concentrate on specific subjects.
-It is full of detail that other history books often lack. I was suprised to see Bruce Lincoln use original Russian words instead of finding an English equivalent for it (such as "izba," "domovoj," "dvorovoj," "lapti," etc.).
-Finally, I've not yet read a book that concentrates so much, and gives such an in-depth study, on the subjects that are usually avoided being talked about "pre-revolutionary" times (simply because they are deemed not important in the light of a warfare).
With this book you will get a clear idea of what the Russian society looked like on the dawn of WWI. Bruce Lincold actually spent several years in the Russian archives doing research (but not just for this book), so he has a first-hand knowledge on the subject.
The chapters discuss the following subjects:
Chapter 1 - 1891: The Fateful Year:
Basic overview of the situation in Russia by the yar or 1891: camine, construction of trans-Siberian railway, some politics.
Chapter 2 - In the Wake of Famine:
Famine, peasants and life in the country.
Chapter 3 - Russia's New Lords:
Emancipation, new layer of society "Kuptsi" and arts and trade associated with it.
Chapter 4 - Life in the Lower Depths:
Proletariat and life in cities and towns.
Chapter 5 - The Few Who Dared:
Revolutionaries - formation of the political parties, radicals, impact on literature.
Chapter 6 - Defenders of the Old Order:
Royal Defenders - key figures that supported the old "tzar" order; their lives and activities.
Chapter 7 - "A Small Victorious War":
The Japanese War - why, when, and how. Gives the background, as well.
Chapter 8 - 1905: The Year of Turmoil:
Revolution of 1905.
Chapter 9 - "What We Want is a Great Russia!":
Government - parties, duma, people behind the law, the lawmaking process.
Chapter 10 - "The Childre of Russia's Dreadful Years":
Art revolution.
Chapter 11 - The Last Days of Peace:
Political situation on the dawn of the WWI - foreign relations and repressions.
Chapter 12 - The Drums of War:
WWI and how it affected Russia and its people.

Jesus the Christ Ranks at Top of All Time FavoritesReview Date: 2008-01-31
Our study group has all different sizes and editions, but this beautifully bound soft leather cover book with its high quality golden edged pages and an attached ribbon bookmark is the envy. Unlike the other large and bulky editions, even with its 700+ pages I can curl up in bed to read it and it also fits in my handbag when I'm on the go. It was well worth the extra money. One caveat: If you need large print, this edition wouldn't be for you.

Perfect first hand account of the 82ndReview Date: 2007-07-12
great book by an honored veteranReview Date: 2007-07-05
From his personal accounts of his courtship with his wife, to his time in England with both new and old friends, the book is made better by the fact that these are all REAL people that actually existed (and in many cases are still living) that makes this a truly special book to have.
A Book from the 82nd.Review Date: 2007-02-04
I was glad to see this boook. There has been a lot written about the 101st in recent years and their defense at Bastogne including 'Band of Brothers,' the movie 'Battleground' and a bunch more. Much less well known is the action of the 82nd to hold the north shoulder and prevent the Germans from having more roads to use for their advance. Burns was there. He doesn't tell the big picture - there are a lot of books on the Battle of the Bulge. He tells his story from the bottom side. It looked different from a foxhole.
The book is told in the form of a bunch of little stories, not a day by day diary. This makes it much more interesting, and I recommend it highly.

The Gift of a LifetimeReview Date: 2008-08-15
Part II begins with his October 2006 diagnosis of terminal cancer. This section collects the wisdom of all the learning and experience of his years of ministry to focus upon on Life and its meaning, and the "hinges of birth and death." It is marked by an honesty and an ease of expression that takes deep, powerful ideas and makes them readily accessible through felicitous metaphor and a mantra that you will never forget. (It also has the practical gift of an essay on "how to behave" when one is making a hospital visit.) This is a book about death that is filled to the overflowing with life, love and wit.
It is the gift of a lifetime.

Love After DeathReview Date: 2008-08-24
Rev. Church acknowledges that, while he doesn't know what - if anything - awaits us after the death of our bodies, he is grateful to be able to simply wonder about it. His writings are drawn from his previous books and many sermons addressing this subject, along with the introspective thoughts arising from his recent diagnosis of terminal cancer. Most importantly, he reminds us that the love that we give and receive in this life is immortal.
He urges us to subscribe the following mantra:
Want what you have
Do what you can
Be who you are

The Meaning of Life (and Death)Review Date: 2008-07-20
This book is about living, or as Rev. Church says, "To live in such a way that our lives will prove worth dying for."
Having Church as a spiritual guide is not unlike going on field trip with Mark Twain, with observations such as "A proportional relationship exists between the fear of death and the fear of life" seamlessly sharing space with his great-grandfather's three major food groups (tobacco, baked beans and whiskey). When people tell him proudly that they don't believe in God, he likes to ask them to tell him a little about the God they don't believe in, for he probably doesn't believe in him either. Church has a deft touch whether he's talking about Princess Diana, civilization versus anarchy, sad movies, or Plato.
Longtime leading light in the world of Unitarian Universalism, Rev. Church has picked up his pen to tackle many subjects including the Founding Fathers, the Jefferson Bible, freedom from fear, and liberalism versus fundamentalism, but this journey of the mind, body and soul proves his best and most provocative. Though Church of course says it better: "Life is filled with danger. That's just the way it is. Finally, the Titanic always hits the iceberg. Hence this simple, if imprudent, bit of advice: Before it does, pick up the phone. Pick up the gauntlet. Do whatever it takes. Take a few chances. Dare to live before you die."
And I might add, Dare to read this book!

The Magician and the girl with 'satiable curtiosityReview Date: 2007-11-08
Ariel McPherson's life has been turned upside down with the disappearance of her father, especially when she and her mother discover that her father had a gambling habit and that they are ruined. They have had to move to a cottage in a holiday village that her mother owned but are finding that life in a tourist village is very different for people who don't have money any longer. Ariel is unable to find work and her mother is retreating into fantasies to cope with the devastation of her life.
When Ariel's mother sends her out to collect water from a noted local spring deep in a wood, Ariel's life changes. She meets a strange person at the spring who doesn't let her see his face but who talks to her, warning her about dangers in the wood. However Ariel has to return, despite all the scary tales told to her by a local village woman who looks after them. Soon Ariel finds herself spending much more time with the mysterious man, Louvel, as she goes to work for him in his enormous house within the wood. Louvel's servants all seem to be strange people - either very tall, very short, fat or otherwise unusual. And yet the bars on the windows suggest that the house might also be a prison, there are strange noises on full moon nights, there are lots of odd rules and Ariel still has never seen Louvel's face, despite them spending time together.
When Ariel has to return home to deal with new leads on the disappearance of her father she finds herself cut off from Louvel's life and somehow back in an engagement with her former Fiancé, Michael. However the threads of her life seem intertwined, Louvel appears to still be watching over her, there are links between a woman living in Louvel's house and the death of Ariel's father. Can she find out who was to blame for her father's disappearance without imposing on Louvel's privacy, can she keep her mother and herself safe, has she brought danger to Louvel's people - and who are those people. And why won't Louvel let her see his face?
The story is written in a great manner with atmospheric descriptions of the wood and Louvel's mansion contrasted with the very everyday life when she is in the village or back living at Michael's house. Ariel's investigation into the events surrounding her father's disappearance seems to occur rather easily with her finding out the necessary information without too much trouble and yet Louvel's hand is always in the background, guiding her and keeping her safe. We never really learn how Louvel is able to do many of the things he does and yet that mystery is part of the fun of the story. The revelation of Louvel at the end of the story wasn't a particular surprise to me but the book's discussions of the nature of beauty and treatment of those with disabilities or disfigurements was food for thought.
In conclusion, this was an excellent read with interesting characters, several mysteries and a satisfactory ending.
