Once again Kay has captured the attention of the children in this story. Clinker is portrayed as a very caring dog even though he tries to show little consideration for Shadow. I can't wait to buy her next book!

Clinker's Shadow, written by Kay Witschen and illustrated by Norma Luckemeyer is an enjoyable tale of friendship. Clinker's Shadow, a follow-up book to Clinker's Flea, follows Clinker on a journey where he learns that friends come in all shapes and sizes. This well-written and colorfully illustrated book would delight young readers.

An excellent cataylst to the work of serious soul growth.

Calling upon a wide range of sources within the perrenial wisdom tradition, and a personal journey of great depth, Ross Bishop invites us to meet face to face with the inner demons that block our path. While most books of this genre offer quick and deceptively easy pathways into the light, Bishop courageously asks the much harder question of how to deal with darkness - what to do with our internal resistance, the self-sabotaging mechanisms that derail us, and the wounded inner child, frozen by fear, that keeps us from moving forward despite our best intentions. The book is filled with insight, as well as practical suggestions tested in over 20 years of work with private clientele. But it is not for those simply looking for a comfortable new age read, for it ultimately demands putting the book down and actually doing the work. If you are serious about moving forward with your life, however, this book will become a treasured dog-eared ally.

I have searched a long time to find a way to heal my emotional wounds. While psychology is helpful, it does not address the depth of my spirit. Spiritual truths are inspirational, but how do I apply them to my life?

Bishop has done a wonderful job of helping me understand why my life is the way that it is and offers practical tools to change it. His insights and exercises are so simple yet powerful. I would call them revolutionary. My life has changed as a result and I am forever grateful.

As you have already guessed, I heartily reccomend this book for anyone interested in healing themselves or others, or to simply gain valuable insight into the human mind.

Are you ready to heal the past and embrace the present moment. If you are, Ross Bishop's "Healing the Shadow", is here for you. I am fortunate to have found this book because it gave me the tools I needed to face my frightened, angry, guilty inner child and start my life anew. My transformation has been noted by many, but most importantly my teenage son. He has told me many times how much he likes me now and what a great mother I am!!! Healing my shadows has brought such peace into my life, it is what I wish for everyone. Thank you Ross.

Shamanism meets psychology

Ross Bishop melds shamanic practice with deep psychological insight in this book, more successfully than others I've read. Interestingly I'd just finished Firestone's The Fantasy Bond, which is psych theory, and Bishop was saying much the same things, and better (for laymen). The journey excercises are well described and they do work! While much shamanic work involves dealing with our issues purely symbolically - or in detail via recapping or such - Ross' method merges the symbolic with memory recapping, something I've found effective. A great bonus is the list of books he likes, like an expanded Amazon listmania list!

Facing the "Beast"

Review Date: 2002-09-17
Bishop's book is a very valuable and inspirational book for any one wishing to heal their innerchild. Bishop is an experienced shaman who writes from his own experiences as well as other case studies. The reading material is easy to follow as well as pleasant to read. Bishop leads the reader into learning how to recognize and even accept the "Beast" within. He explains how the "Beast" is manifested by the innerchild and gives easy to follow steps on how to communicate with the "Beast". He explains that once the "Beast" is heard, blockages can be removed and healing can occur.

This book is both enlightening and healing. Without a doubt, it deserves 5 stars!

It took me a couple of chapters to get into it, but as soon as Madeleine went to Versailles, I was hooked and couldn't put it down. If you like any historical fiction, I highly reccommend this. I really cared about the characters and couldn't wait to find out what happened. I'm really looking forward to the next novel in the series.

The Clavell family finds themselves at the mercy of King Louis XIV's merciless dragoons, soldiers who terrorize the Protestant Huguenots and try to force them to convert to Catholicism, the state religion. Madeleine Clavell, who knew King Louis when they were both very young, believes she can persuade him to call off the dragoons. Her husband, Francois, and her mother, Elizabeth, both try to dissuade her from traveling to Versailles, but Madeleine is desperate. Surely the king cannot be heartless. Surely he must remember what they once meant to each other and he will show mercy to her and her family. It is a gamble which could cost her everything.

I had no idea that such persecution went on in France in the 1600's. I found it very intriguing to "experience" through this story what it was like to be persecuted simply for believing a different doctrine. A dramatic story of love, betrayal, and persecution!

This is a powerful, fast-paced story that kept me guessing what might happen until the very end. I thoroughly enjoyed this family's story. I can hardly wait to read the next book in the series! I want to know how things turn out for each of the family members. I highly recommend In the Shadow of the Sun King.

"What Americans Do Not Understand"

Review Date: 2002-05-16
I chose this title, because it was true, at least for me. As Americans, we (some of us, not all) "think" Russians are not "very intelligent", "backward" and even, "less than human."
After reading this book, I tend to "get on my soapbox" to help people understand what few choices, the Russian people ever had in the outcomes of their lives! I never knew this before purchasing and reading Mr. Lincoln's book!
If you cannot be convinced by the poverty imposed on the Russians through Mr. Lincoln's words, you will be convinced by the heart-wrenching photographs; the children who appear as hopeless, hovels designed as homes with animals living within, death from starvation was not uncommon. And all the time, Russia refused (those in power prior to the Revolution)to feed her people, wheat was being shipped to other European countries.
And the Russians never questioned the motives of the Tsar; after the Revolution, they still starved and were murdered by Stalin and Hitler.
We need to change our attitudes and this book did it for me.

Terrific !

In the forward, W. Bruce Lincoln states the book is "...an effort to explore the lives, thoughts, hopes, and dreams of the men and women who lived in the world's largest empire and to convey some sense of the tensions that tore at the fabric of their existence on the eve of the Great War and the Revolution of 1917." In this effort he succeeds brilliantly.

We see portraits of Tsar Alexander III, Nicholas II, Pobedonostsev, Lenin, Rasputin, and a host of other generals, officials and ordinary people who shaped that era.

We get an insider's look at what life was like in a peasant community, inside the peasant's izba or house, and their attitudes towards schooling, medicine and religion. We go inside the growing factories and the slums the workers inhabited in the cities with rapidly developing industry. We see the new nobility of the industrial barons, the revolutionaries fighting the tsarist autocracy, the defenders of the Old Order...all come to life in these pages.

Graphic descriptions are given of the vicious pogroms against Jews. The impact of the Trans-Siberian Railroad in both economic and a political aspects is covered. The 1904 war with Japan is there with its criminally incompetent generals and and admirals and the war's impact on the development of the Revolution of 1905 as well as the mood of the populace as the nations slides toward the Great War.

This well written, illuminating, detailed and well documented book is a classic work on the Russian society of those years and fleshes out the soul of Russia as few other books do. 16 pages of photos. Highly recommended.

Very informative!!

I am Russian so I knew quite a lot about Russian history before opening this book. The book is the best guide to Russian history of the period. Here's why:

-It is written in a wonderful language - very easy to read, yet directed towards scholars.
-History is divided into chapters that concentrate on specific subjects.
-It is full of detail that other history books often lack. I was suprised to see Bruce Lincoln use original Russian words instead of finding an English equivalent for it (such as "izba," "domovoj," "dvorovoj," "lapti," etc.).
-Finally, I've not yet read a book that concentrates so much, and gives such an in-depth study, on the subjects that are usually avoided being talked about "pre-revolutionary" times (simply because they are deemed not important in the light of a warfare).

With this book you will get a clear idea of what the Russian society looked like on the dawn of WWI. Bruce Lincold actually spent several years in the Russian archives doing research (but not just for this book), so he has a first-hand knowledge on the subject.

The chapters discuss the following subjects:

Chapter 1 - 1891: The Fateful Year:
Basic overview of the situation in Russia by the yar or 1891: camine, construction of trans-Siberian railway, some politics.

Chapter 2 - In the Wake of Famine:
Famine, peasants and life in the country.

Chapter 3 - Russia's New Lords:
Emancipation, new layer of society "Kuptsi" and arts and trade associated with it.

Chapter 4 - Life in the Lower Depths:
Proletariat and life in cities and towns.

Chapter 5 - The Few Who Dared:
Revolutionaries - formation of the political parties, radicals, impact on literature.

Chapter 6 - Defenders of the Old Order:
Royal Defenders - key figures that supported the old "tzar" order; their lives and activities.

Chapter 7 - "A Small Victorious War":
The Japanese War - why, when, and how. Gives the background, as well.

Chapter 8 - 1905: The Year of Turmoil:
Revolution of 1905.

Chapter 9 - "What We Want is a Great Russia!":
Government - parties, duma, people behind the law, the lawmaking process.

Chapter 10 - "The Childre of Russia's Dreadful Years":
Art revolution.

Chapter 11 - The Last Days of Peace:
Political situation on the dawn of the WWI - foreign relations and repressions.

Chapter 12 - The Drums of War:
WWI and how it affected Russia and its people.

This is no doubt a work of divinely inspired learned genius. James Talmage gives sensitive insight into and understanding of the life and mission of Jesus Christ second to none. Literarily it is a luscious read and easily ranks way at the top of my all time favorite books.

Our study group has all different sizes and editions, but this beautifully bound soft leather cover book with its high quality golden edged pages and an attached ribbon bookmark is the envy. Unlike the other large and bulky editions, even with its 700+ pages I can curl up in bed to read it and it also fits in my handbag when I'm on the go. It was well worth the extra money. One caveat: If you need large print, this edition wouldn't be for you.

Few people grasp the importance and the completeness of the Savior's life. James E. Talmage is one who does. His explanations are precise and without excuse. His ability to quote many Christian scholars that support his conclusions is impressive. The thoroughness of his research leaves one wondering how anyone can doubt the divine mission of Jesus Christ. His testimony is persuasive and personal. A great study of the life and mission of the only perfect man to walk this earth.

Jesus the Christ is one of my most favorite books. It is well written and helps the reader understand the only Begotten Of The Father. It is the mission of Christ in Pre-mortality, Mortality and for all eternity. It helps you understand the person and furthermore helps you build a closer relationship with Our Savior. I cannot say more about that book, except I know it to be true and every word touches my heart each time that I read it. I have three copies... one big one with art, one leather bound for daily reading and one paperbound that I have marked up like crazy.

This is a very well written book b y a man who was there. Telling the personal story of Leland Burns' travels thru F Co of the 508PIR, Jump Into the Valley of the Shadow is a fine read. Factual and well thought out, it goes thru the gritty days of fighting that only a man who has lived thru it can tell you. But it also goes over the softer, more human side of his time overseas in an in-depth and honest way.
From his personal accounts of his courtship with his wife, to his time in England with both new and old friends, the book is made better by the fact that these are all REAL people that actually existed (and in many cases are still living) that makes this a truly special book to have.

This book starts out with the author staring out the open door of a C-47 on the night of June 5, 1944 and realizing that it was now too late to join the motor pool or become a cook. Like a lot of other youngsters, when he was drafted into the Army he decided that he wanted to be with America's best, and that was the paratroopers.

I was glad to see this boook. There has been a lot written about the 101st in recent years and their defense at Bastogne including 'Band of Brothers,' the movie 'Battleground' and a bunch more. Much less well known is the action of the 82nd to hold the north shoulder and prevent the Germans from having more roads to use for their advance. Burns was there. He doesn't tell the big picture - there are a lot of books on the Battle of the Bulge. He tells his story from the bottom side. It looked different from a foxhole.

The book is told in the form of a bunch of little stories, not a day by day diary. This makes it much more interesting, and I recommend it highly.

I highly recommend this book. Dwayne Burns brings to life his memories from elite training as a paratrooper to his feelings and emotions of actually going into combat. Along the way, he shares his personal life stories and how all of this shaped the person he was to became. The incredible bond that paratroopers have which started in their training and lasts to this day is very inspiring. Reading this book reinforced my genuine thanks to these men that "Jumped Into the Valley of the Shadow" along with the rest of the "Greatest Generation" that helped bring peace back to this world in the uncertain time of WWII.

OK! This is one man's story about the "Oh Eight" the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment (P.I.R.), 2nd Bn, Fox Co. Mr Burns jumped into France, Operation Neptune (D-Day) and Market-Garden (Holland) two jump stars earned the hard way. There are a lot of "soldiers stories" in the book, being with your buddies, goofing off, military life, as well as the stories about combat. Books like these put a human face on anonymous mens faces of black and white photos taken 60+ years ago. It shows they were pretty much the same as most young men, full of life and hopes and dreams, except their lives were forged in the fires of the Depression. It is a good read and a page turner, there are "flashback" type parts of the book, that may disagree with some readers. But I was most humbled and impressed by his story and the stories of other men I have met, ironically from Easy Co. 508th PIR, Mr Burns' sister Co to his own Fox Co. I am glad some of these men have told their story, because too many never have or got the chance to live long enough to. Thier story is told by rows of silent crosses in France, Italy, Holland, Belgium, Germany, and a thousand other lonely places where American boys fought and died. Read this book if you want to know the story of one man's journey through a pivotal time in human history.

The Gift of a Lifetime
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-08-15
Part I of this short but immensely powerful and provocative book is an autobiographical review of the author's experiences with the death of others, (that each of us can readily identify with in our own personal way) e.g. when as a young boy his 95-year old great- grandfather's dying is "the most natural thing in the world" while a little over a decade later, a roommate's sudden death from pneumonia shocks and enrages him, providing a "turning point in my life." Then, he brings insight to how he "became a minister in a meaningful way" when he conducted his first funeral, or was at the bedside of a dying parishioner, or called to be with people "at times of loss." The death of his father, Senator Frank Church, is a critical turning point as "he taught us how to die ... and, he taught us how to live." Part I ends with his responsibilities as a New York City religious leader in the aftermath of 9/11.

Part II begins with his October 2006 diagnosis of terminal cancer. This section collects the wisdom of all the learning and experience of his years of ministry to focus upon on Life and its meaning, and the "hinges of birth and death." It is marked by an honesty and an ease of expression that takes deep, powerful ideas and makes them readily accessible through felicitous metaphor and a mantra that you will never forget. (It also has the practical gift of an essay on "how to behave" when one is making a hospital visit.) This is a book about death that is filled to the overflowing with life, love and wit.

It is the gift of a lifetime.

Love After Death

This is a MUST READ for anyone fearing their own death (and who doesn't?) or dealing with the death of a loved one. Written by a Unitarian Universalist minister dealing with his own impending demise, Forrest Church (son of the late Senator Frank Church of Utah) encourages us to appreciate the fact that we are very blessed to be alive at all, given the amazing series of events leading to our births.

Rev. Church acknowledges that, while he doesn't know what - if anything - awaits us after the death of our bodies, he is grateful to be able to simply wonder about it. His writings are drawn from his previous books and many sermons addressing this subject, along with the introspective thoughts arising from his recent diagnosis of terminal cancer. Most importantly, he reminds us that the love that we give and receive in this life is immortal.

He urges us to subscribe the following mantra:

Want what you have
Do what you can
Be who you are

I'm not interested in books about religion but this is a work of great philosophy, successfully tackling the age old questions of Why are we here? What do we do? And What happens when we die. A wise and witty must read for the curious life traveler.

The Meaning of Life (and Death)

If you are a person who reads the obituaries then this book is for you! And not because you have a morbid fascination with death, but most likely as a result of your interest in life. How long did they live? What did they accomplish? How did it end? Was it too soon?

This book is about living, or as Rev. Church says, "To live in such a way that our lives will prove worth dying for."

Having Church as a spiritual guide is not unlike going on field trip with Mark Twain, with observations such as "A proportional relationship exists between the fear of death and the fear of life" seamlessly sharing space with his great-grandfather's three major food groups (tobacco, baked beans and whiskey). When people tell him proudly that they don't believe in God, he likes to ask them to tell him a little about the God they don't believe in, for he probably doesn't believe in him either. Church has a deft touch whether he's talking about Princess Diana, civilization versus anarchy, sad movies, or Plato.

Longtime leading light in the world of Unitarian Universalism, Rev. Church has picked up his pen to tackle many subjects including the Founding Fathers, the Jefferson Bible, freedom from fear, and liberalism versus fundamentalism, but this journey of the mind, body and soul proves his best and most provocative. Though Church of course says it better: "Life is filled with danger. That's just the way it is. Finally, the Titanic always hits the iceberg. Hence this simple, if imprudent, bit of advice: Before it does, pick up the phone. Pick up the gauntlet. Do whatever it takes. Take a few chances. Dare to live before you die."

And I might add, Dare to read this book!

Janet Lorimer uses fairy tale imagery and gothic horror in Master of Shadows. But I was disappointed in the heroine's lack of common sense and was let down by the "big reveal" of the hero. The mystery was drawn out and predictable. Some of the writing seemed like something I might have read twenty years ago. Glad I got this from the library instead of spending money on it.

Janet Lorimer is a masterful writer. I can't tell you what a pleasure it is to pick up a book and be immediately sucked in by a great voice, a wonderful eye for detail, solid, compelling characters and a terrific story that hooks you immediately. Many years ago, I read some of Ms. Lorimer's children's books and am thrilled that she has moved to the world of adult fiction. If you like mystery mixed with a little fantasy, this is the book for you.

Only when I was nearly finished the book did it come to mind the story of Beauty and the Beast. This is a great romantic story of almost forbidden love and it reminded me of the characters, Catherine and Vincent from the television series "Beauty and the Beast". I loved those characters then and I love the characters portrayed in Master of Shadows. It is full of mystery, shadows, and suspense. I found the book hard to put down.

Master of Shadows was a wonderful book that kept me hooked until the end. Ms. Lorimer knows how to build suspense - not giving you too much or too little. And the surprising twists shake you up as soon as you think you know what will happen next. The descriptions help you picture exactly what is happening.
A fun and interesting read - a vacation in a book.

This book is great fun. In some ways it reads like an amalgamation of a magical story of a woman who finds a strange world within a forest and a modern criminal story of searching for a murderer. The book contains both aspects woven together with a certain element of mystery still at the end.

Ariel McPherson's life has been turned upside down with the disappearance of her father, especially when she and her mother discover that her father had a gambling habit and that they are ruined. They have had to move to a cottage in a holiday village that her mother owned but are finding that life in a tourist village is very different for people who don't have money any longer. Ariel is unable to find work and her mother is retreating into fantasies to cope with the devastation of her life.

When Ariel's mother sends her out to collect water from a noted local spring deep in a wood, Ariel's life changes. She meets a strange person at the spring who doesn't let her see his face but who talks to her, warning her about dangers in the wood. However Ariel has to return, despite all the scary tales told to her by a local village woman who looks after them. Soon Ariel finds herself spending much more time with the mysterious man, Louvel, as she goes to work for him in his enormous house within the wood. Louvel's servants all seem to be strange people - either very tall, very short, fat or otherwise unusual. And yet the bars on the windows suggest that the house might also be a prison, there are strange noises on full moon nights, there are lots of odd rules and Ariel still has never seen Louvel's face, despite them spending time together.

When Ariel has to return home to deal with new leads on the disappearance of her father she finds herself cut off from Louvel's life and somehow back in an engagement with her former Fiancé, Michael. However the threads of her life seem intertwined, Louvel appears to still be watching over her, there are links between a woman living in Louvel's house and the death of Ariel's father. Can she find out who was to blame for her father's disappearance without imposing on Louvel's privacy, can she keep her mother and herself safe, has she brought danger to Louvel's people - and who are those people. And why won't Louvel let her see his face?

The story is written in a great manner with atmospheric descriptions of the wood and Louvel's mansion contrasted with the very everyday life when she is in the village or back living at Michael's house. Ariel's investigation into the events surrounding her father's disappearance seems to occur rather easily with her finding out the necessary information without too much trouble and yet Louvel's hand is always in the background, guiding her and keeping her safe. We never really learn how Louvel is able to do many of the things he does and yet that mystery is part of the fun of the story. The revelation of Louvel at the end of the story wasn't a particular surprise to me but the book's discussions of the nature of beauty and treatment of those with disabilities or disfigurements was food for thought.

In conclusion, this was an excellent read with interesting characters, several mysteries and a satisfactory ending.

I thought this was a very well written memoir, and I read A LOT of memoirs. It was fascinating reading about Schizophrenia I learned about that disease and reading it has brought about me getting interested in reading more about that mental illness (and other types as well)I read this book within a couple of days. It has very good character development--the results are feeling for everyone in this family and others (that are looking in on the family) :)

A Must Read

My Mother's Keeper is an excellent autobiography/biography in one of a mother and daughter and their separate and entwined lives. I am a mental health RN and have been studying about schizophrenia. This book has helped me see in places I have never been able to see into before. I now have a broader perspective of schizophrenia and how families must feel also. Ms. Holley's writing is easy to read and follow. So much so, that it is very hard to put the book down. This is definitely a must read for anyone who wants to find out more about schizophrenia.

This book provides an accurate description of the development and chronic course of schizophrenia, one of the most debilitating illnesses of our time. The Holleys' sensitive portrayal of Mrs. Elgin's life touched me deeply. I thank them for giving us and honest depiction of this illness.

This was an exceptionally well written memoir, one that must have been very difficult to write. Ms. Elgin moves gracefully along the line between her mother's story and her own, and (it appears) honestly grapples with the ups and downs of both. Thank you.

As a young woman with a mother who has paranoid schizophrenia, this book was invaluable to me. My mom was missing for 12 years, and I received this as a gift not long after finding her (about a year and a half ago). It was personally very comforting for me to read this wonderful book, and I would recommend it to anyone. Ms. Holley's close bond with her mom reminded me of the bond I had/have with mine, and the inherently conflicted feelings that result from that bond.
