A must for all papermakers!

This book is a real gold mine of information. It shows how to make paper from plants then how to transform it, mold it, decorate it, make vessels with it. The instructions by experienced papermakers are very clear, to the point, easy to follow. There are ample black and white photos to illustrate instructions plus a portfolio section in the middle with color photos. Each section starts with an artist's statement then proceeds to describe the process.
A truly inspiring book!

Introducing techniques of 17 artists

17 artists shows their tools, methods and works. The author tells, "The book has been designed to work for you as a workshop and as an inspiration. The goal was to show different approaches taken by many artists, not to give one definitive view." All the instructions are proofed by the author.

The presentation styles are different from artist to artist. Some artists show the detailed process with photos. There are a lot of tips and ideas in this book. I'm interested in the method to apply handmade paper to basket and molding. Even paper making beginner like me can apply some methods. I'll try to put my handmade paper to a basket.

Unfortunately most of photos are black and white though includes some color photo section.

If you are not satisfied just to make paper, this book is for you.

Great Book, Even Better Cover, Lousy Back Cover Copy
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-04-09
This book is great. The back cover is not. It doesn't do justice to what is inside. This story was especially appealing to me because I am so very much like the man on the bridge in this story. I think most readers will be able to relate to this man and to the exposed feelings of other characters in the story.

Michael Bell is just an ordinary, troubled, middle-aged man on a bridge when he realizes a young woman has jumped into the raging river. He suddenly sees this as his chance to earn absolution from himself and from God for the total waste he has made of the first forty years of his life. As he hurries back and forth along the bridge rail searching for a body in the water, it occurs to him that every event in his life, both good and bad, especially the bad, has placed him on this bridge, on this night, when and where his life can finally have a purpose and a meaning. While Michael searches the water for his damsel in distress, the reader gets to experience the bad things that have happened to this good person as he comes to grips with their meaning and importance to his life and to whom he has become from the experience.

I can only speak for middle-aged men who are right now feeling what Michael Bell is feeling, but this book held a powerful message for me: Don't Jump. There is a reason for this madness. I believe it will hold that message for others too, who have ever asked what is the meaning of life, is this all there is, and why do bad things always happen to me.

I loved it!

I wish there were more honest books like this one. It is real, funny, and sad a the same time. I have often asked myself why bad things happen to good people, and now I know. From the very beginning, I was drawn into Larrisa's problem with the Russian mob. Then I felt so sorry for Billy Gale looking for his dad, wishing that Michael could be his father and knowing that it couldn't be so. I love the way it all comes together at the end, and I can't wait for volume II to come out.

I downloaded this to my Ipod. I love the way Berendzen talks about the development of science since the begining till now, and all the great minds who contributed to it. This is like listening to a vast and mystical drama. I only wish that this was in book form so, I could easily revisit parts of it.

It was a wonderful way for an interested layman to get updated on what has been learned in the field of astronomy since space flight has added to our knowledge. Dr. Berendzen is able to bring a wealth of detail into perspective. Also, he added personal information about various key physicists that humanized the subject.

Super Cute...Best Journal Series Out There!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-03-18
The second I saw this journal in my local bookstore, I HAD to have it. If you saw my bookshelf you'd know that I have TONS of journals and this one, by far, is the most intriguing.

The cover looks like a bona-fide dime-store trash novel with the red-dye page-edging to match. The cover is soft which, for me, is preferred because it makes it much easier to write in.

It's larger than the original book. It's not as small as a paperback (trash) novel would be. So it's perfect for journaling or writing down ideas.

Within the pages are one-liners here and there to give the book that old-fashioned paperback novel appeal. The one-liners are NOT on every page and are so small in the corner of the pages that it doesn't take up too much space.

The moment I bought this one journal I went online (here) and bought the rest of the series. I believe there are 4 in all and I wish there were many more.

If you like journals of intriguing cover value that are easy to write in, you'll LOVE this journal series. Get them all! You won't be disappointed.

Also, since these journals are so intriguing, make sure you hide them if you have secret thoughts and ideas in them. If you leave it on a coffee table, chances are someone who comes over WILL pick it up and flip through it because it actually does look like an original old-time trash novel!

Perfect gift item for those who write and journal!

Adorable, good quality journal.

Sin on Wheels is a semi-hard cover journal with smooth, wide ruled, decent quality paper. By semi-hard, I mean a thin, stiff cardboard that is harder than a paperback cover, but much thinner than a real hardback cover. The edges of the cover and paper are red, just like a vintage paperback. The paper is somewhat yellowed and lightly ruled with tiny blue dots. It's just enough to guide your words without spoiling the vintage pulp novel look. Some pages have a phrase in the corner. One is, "Girls just wanna have a little fun--women wanna have a whole lot." The paper is smooth enough for a fountain or dip pen, and neither Noodler's nor Rohrer & Klingner ink feather or bleed through it. I normally don't buy journals when a cheap notebook would do just as well, but this one is just too cute.

It's a rare novelist who can write a satisfying novella, and rarer still a a novelist/novella writer who can create poetry that stirs the breast and feeds the head. This unbelievable collection of dark spells in poetic form are pure witchery in the form of language. A mystical shroud of subterranean desires interlaces these poems that each seems drawn from an inner well of bleak emotions that are at once bizarrely alien yet completely recognizable. Run this dark music through your head-- "wing's hush": tell me/the moth's lullaby/dreams of candles/nightmares of burn/the cadence and rhymes/are those of flame/dying for the mysteries of light/. If a finer poem describing irresistible impulse has ever been written, I haven't read it. I was moved to tears. These are poems that disturb, amaze, horrify and touch the soul with their beauty. And that is the purpose and majesty of poetry. It is the artful crafting of words which produce an emotional reaction in the reader that is so elusive and so satisfying. This is a magnificent and soaring achievement that deserves a wide readership. Read these mind-tilting poems. Read them hard. Then read them again.

Great Dark Poetry...

This is a little book just over 5X5 inches, containing 115 pictures. These aren't just photos but are photo puzzles. On top of that they are enlarged photos of tiny things. The whole object is not shown, just a part of it.So,that is the puzzle, from this 'hint',you have to figure what the object is.Examples;the ball tip of a ball point pen,the clip that holds the spring in a mousetrap,a partial view of a can opener, etc. These are common items, but quite difficult when seeing only part of the thing.
If you like this sort of thing, you'll find some in the game
"MindTrap" and even better you can go to the web site Mystery Photos.com and you can find lots more. You can sign up (free) and get a puzzle photo sent to you each week.Test your skill and then see what success others had trying to solve it.

It's impressive how the author seems to know all the right questions to ask -- the ones that elicit the most interesting story from each filmmaker covered in this book. Obviously Hays did his homework before each interview, because he asks about things I never knew I wanted to know.

What a selection of interviews. there are some unusual choices, from mainstream to eccentric to Oh My--! Each interview is preceded by an introduction that provides the context I needed to enjoy each interview regardless of whether I've heard of the subject (or seen the films).

I never knew there was such variety and such accomplishment in North American filmmaking. And, yes, now I have a long list of DVDs to rent.

Hays, Matthew. "The View From Here: Conversations with Gay and Lesbian Filmmakers", Arsenal Pulp Press, 2007.

Behind the Scenes

Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride

Gay and Lesbian films have come into their own more than ever since the releases of "Brokeback Mountain" and "Transamerica". It is the people who work behind the cameras that have made the difference and "The View from Here" carefully looks at them. Hays looks at directors and screenwriters--some of whom work in mainstream cinema and some who are working from the edges and gives us a personal look of what they went through to maneuver in the movie industry. Written in the form of personal interviews, we get a fascinating study as well as an in depth look at gay cinema. The book is laded with photographs from the films contained in the book as well as production stills.

Interviews are not always readable but in "The View from Here". They read quickly and are exceptionally informative. It is obvious that the author has done his research well and the result is a reference book for all who love the movies. Besides when a book has a really great picture of Divine on the cover, it has something to say.

Some of the filmmakers included as John Waters, Gregg Araki, Wakefield Poole, Rosa von Praunheim, and Bruce LaBruce. There are many others as well.

Reading the book is like taking the yellow brick road through gay film history. There are anecdotes and analyses, facts and interviews and random thoughts on our movies. It is essential reading for anyone who wants to know more about the history of gay/lesbian film and it is important to know about the people who shaped that aspect of our history. Gay film takes all forms and all genres and it is all here--trash, porn, realism, documentary. Indies, Hollywood, noir, and activism. Like our symbol, the rainbow flag, our movies are diverse and Hays includes the diversity of our community in his book. He gives us the voice of the filmmaker. He shows us the courage and the fortitude of the people that make these films happen and he inspires us and allows us to feel a sense of solidarity as well as perversity of which our century has established as virtues.

Just to let other buyers know: In July 2006 I asked the publisher of this long overdue book about its status and he said it has not been published yet, as the author is still working on finishing the project. The stated release date is erroneous. Presumably it will still be published after a while. [I gave it 5 stars because I just assume this will be a great book - eventually!]

It's pretty rare to find any kind of masked-avenger type fiction any more, but Turowski offers two in this volume: one about a girl raised by raccoons in a sort of bizarre take on Edgar Rice Burrough's Tarzan (she feels compelled to dress like a raccoon, watches bad guys from the trees, speaks raccoon-ese) that makes for silly fun. The other features an Asian pulp hero living in racist prohibition-era San Francisco and fighting off white gangsters. An interesting twist. There is also a story called "The Bugboys" about highly evolved bats who act like cowboys and a couple other science fiction and horror stories that come from the pulp tradition. I think this is Turowski's first book. He did the cover and most of the illustrations. A fun book!
