Zorro Rides Tonight!

Review Date: 2002-03-23
We tend to forget what a great fictional creation Zorro is.

Here are 11 of his classic adventures -- 10 short stories and a novelette -- which have been unavailable for over a half-century. As Zorro or as the languid Don Diego, our hero is resourceful and witty. He fights for the oppressed. Thew soldiers he fights against are honorable and brave, and Zorro respects them, reserving his contempt for their political masters.

It is amazing how "politically correct" the original Zorro stories are. Written at a time when magazines didn't think twice abouvt using terms like "spic" or "greaser", here we have a Hispanic hero helping people protect thier rights. Often, we find ourselves apologizing for the language and attitude of previous generations; you don't have to do that with Zorro.

No Zorro fan of any generation will fail to be thrilled by these adventures!

Suzanne or Marilu--who will be your guru?
Helpful Votes: 14 out of 17 total.
Review Date: 2004-02-09
I have just read this book as well as Marilu Henner's book. In some ways they are similar: both feature beautiful, healthy, glamourous, rich, 70s-sitcom-starring celebrities. Both claim to have discovered the secrets to health and vitality and slimness. Both are enjoyable to read and seem like someone you'd like to have as a friend. But the food...there's the big difference. Being an aficionado of the famous Eat Right 4 Your Type way of eating I have discovered that as a type O+ I feel much better on a protein/veggies/fruits regimen versus an almost vegetarian (fishaterian?) grains and veggies approach. I spent 6 years basically doing the Henner approach but found a much higher energy level and ability to maintain a healthy weight AFTER I quit eating so much starch and started eating meat again. As I read this book I couldn't help but notice that it is very close to what Dr. D'adamo recommends for Blood Type As in his book; lots of soy, grains and legumes, avoiding dairy and meat and keeping fat intake low. I am convinced that this is the best approach for some people, probably the Type As! Suzanne Somers' book which allows meats, dairy and fat (properly combined of course) works really well for me and probably other type Os who really do need protein to maintain their health and energy. Speaking strictly as a cook and an enthusiastic eater, the Somers book is much more fun. I found recipes in this book that I will definitely use. Therefore, my advice to these readers is: If you are a type O, then check out Suzanne's (and Peter D'adamo's ER4YT of course!) book and enjoy a tasty dinner!!! An aside--I saw Ms Sommers in person in Palm springs two years ago and she looks absolutely lovely. She must be doing something right!

The work explores the positive and negative aspects of dieting.
The author explores ways to reprogram the metabolism.
The first important food group is pro/fats consisting of meats/
poultry, fish and eggs. Next is the low starch veggie group
followed by carbs which consist of pasta, cereal, bread and
non-fat dairy. The author recommends eliminating all kinds of
junk food; such as, sugars, starch, caffeine , alcohol and
processed foods in general. She tells us to eat fruit on an
empty stomach. Foods should be eaten in combinations.
For instance fats are to be eaten with veggies or carbs
should be combined with veggies. The objective is to promote
hormonal balance. Meals should never be skipped. In fact,
the protocol calls for 3 meals each day. Stage 1 aims at
losing weight while the subsequent stages are weight
maintenance. The author recommends utilizing generous portions
of herbs; such as, ginger and extra virgin olive oil in place
of heavier oils. Many sample recipes are supplied.
Finally, the author speaks of a glycemic index and provides
sample food statistics. For instance, high glycemic foods
are in the 60-110 range. These foods consist of beer, white
bread, potato, jam, popcorn, pasta and brown rice. These foods
should be avoided or minimized. Dairy (non-fat), fresh fruit,
soy and green vegetables are in the 15-35 or low glycemic
category. This book is a good purchase. It will assist in
formulating and maintaining a diet which is manageable over
the long term.

Suzanne Somers is giving middle aged women false hope

Suzanne Somers is partial scam artist. She claims that if you follow the advice in her books, prepare her recipes, use her skin products, etc. you can look as good as she does for her age. She never mentions all the cosmetic surgery and lipo suction she has had done. I know a number of Plastic Surgeons and Dermatologists, and they all claim that there is no way that her face and body can look as good as it does for her age without Cosmetic Surgery on her face and body and touch-ups along the way. However, her books with their beautiful pictures of her and her recipes are lovely to look at but she is giving women who are in their 50's and beyond false hope. She should really write a book about all the work she has had done, what it was like, the cost (which the average woman cannot afford), etc.

This Book Changed my Life

At 16 years old, I was gravely obese at 330 lbs. I was depressed and desperate, trying things from cutting portions to, at one point, eating nothing but bread and water for two weeks. I still gained weight no matter what I did.

I visited my dad one summer, and he introduced me to Somersizing and gave me this book to read. Long story short, I lost 100 lbs in about 12 months without ANY excercise, ON AND OFF this plan, WITHOUT cutting any of my portions (NOTE: Author recommends regular excersize and committing to this plan). Even though I didn't go at it 100%, I STILL managed to lose weight. I say this to illustrate the potential Suzanne's plan has.

The book itself is an easy and quick read. I couldn't put it down. Suzanne also does a great job of emphasizing the important points so you can't miss them. She even includes really handy quick reference pages in the back. I love how she includes technical stuff that is not necessary to understand in order to start her plan, but is helpful in explaining the science if you are interested.

"I DONT HAVE WEIGHT PROBLEMS" you say? Suzanne recommends this plan for OVERALL WELL BEING. She discusses how skinny people may LOOK healthy, but can have damaged systems from starches and sugars. More particularly, how indigestion, brittle nails, thin hair, dry skin, liver problems, and other problems seemingly unrelated to weight can be caused by replacing fats/proteins that our body needs with unbeneficial sugars.

Thanks to Suzanne, I am healthier, happier, more confident, and most importantly, more critical about mainstream information I come across.

Lots of easy to find ingredients and easy to follow recipes.
I love the kids section!
And also the sections on massage oils, lotions and things like that.

I enjoy reading this book for fun. So far I made two recipes- a butternut squash, sweet potato, and apple soup and the vegan chicken salad. I've had great success with the soup (excellent combination of flavors!) and the chicken salad was popular at my office party. There are some cool non-recipe oriented tips in the back. The layout is attracive and the writers seem like fun. I suggest only that they get more varied graphics. They use the same vegetable graphics again and again.

This is the first time I've ever taken the time to write a review. I was looking at new vegan cookbooks and going through the helpful reviews, which made me realize I should let everyone know how much I love my "How it All Vegan" cookbook. I've been a vegan for 6 years now and of all the cookbooks I've purchased or gotten from the library, this is above and beyond my favorite! Every recipe I've tried (and I've tried many of them) has been delicious. I just made one of my favorites, the vegan spinach lasagna, today to bring in to work (even my non-vegan co-workers love it). So if you're looking for a can't miss book, I highly recommend this one!

I will be the first to admit it. I'm not vegan. I have no desire to be vegan. That being said, I have an incredible little sister who does choose to be vegan. This was one of the first cookbooks she got that was actually beneficial. She enjoys cooking and baking the things herself, as really most of the recipes are not difficult. She's even baked some cookies and cakes for bake sales and school, and nobody could tell the difference! I've tasted some of the baked goods and they are very yummy.

The graphics and the authors writing style and young and funky. They work well in creating a happy, healthy, and upbeat cookbook. For my sister's sake, I rate this book four stars.

This book starts off strong with the Verne's classic style and wit. The initial pages are entertaining, fast-paced and set the premise for a potentially wonderful novel. However, the story quickly slows down as preparations for the trip take entirely too long. In the version I read, the actual journey doesn't begin until page 90. Then, once the journey begins, it is rather uneventful. Verne also puts in too much geological information for the average reader to appreciate. It becomes quite tedious reading about the content of various mineral deposits, composition of the substrata of the earth, etc. While some such material is interesting, Verne goes over the top. This novel fails to display the extent of Verne's talents. For a better taste of his writings, I would recommend "Around the World in 80 Days" or, if you can digest a much longer work, "The Mysterious Island."

A fine Jules Verne read.

Journey To the Center of the Earth was always one of my favorite movies and after all these years, I finally read the book. The book is not like the movie at all. Honestly, I liked the movie better however that is not to say I was in any way disappointed with the book. It moved along quickly and drew me in such that I couldn't put it down and so read it in one sitting. A geologist, his eager young nephew and an Icelandic guide make their way to the earth's core following the footsteps of a previous mysterious explorer into the dark subterranean world of weird plants, animals, rocks and unforeseen dangers. There was no woman with them as in the movie but a female companion might have spiced it up a bit. The Icelander didn't have a pet duck along as in the movie but he was an indispensible partner in the venture. All in all, it was adventurous and fun and worth my time. I enjoyed it very much. Sure glad I finally read the book!

Another Wonderful Adventure by Jules Verne

Review Date: 2007-11-03
Note: Some immature Mormon has been slamming my reviews because I wrote some negative reviews of books attempting to defend the Book of Mormon.

So your "helpful" votes are greatly appreciated. A short review is not necessarily a bad review if it leads you to a great novel. I've just noted the general theme. Thanks

A group of adventures with an old map travel to Iceland and find a cave. They enter the cave and follow a path to the center of the earth, where they find an inner world of strange creatures. Just suspend your belief, and sit back an enjoy this wonderful tale. I experience it first as a movie way back in 1960. Later, I read the novel. Don't miss it.

The concept of a hollow earth was not new in Jules Verne's day (mid-1800s). Its most prominent advocate was Capt. John Cleave Symmes, who advanced the theory in about 1818. Symmes was so convincing that in the 1820s he got twenty-five members of the United States Congress to vote to fund an expedition to the North Pole, where they would enter the center of the earth through a 4,000-mile-wide cavity in the earth.

It was then believed that the Lost Tribes of Israel lived on the North Pole behind a wall of ice. This theory found its way into the revelations of Joseph Smith, who in the Book of Mormon and later, said that the Lost Tribes would break down the ice and return from the "north countries."

Also, check out "At the Earth's Core," by Edgar Rice Burroughs.

Brilliant read if you can leave your knowledge behind

Review Date: 2008-02-22
It had been many years since I had read a Jules Verne novel, and to be honest, I couldn't recall his skill as a writer at all. When I dug this book off of my bookshelf I admit, I was simply bored and looking for something mindless to read while the children fought over gluing cotton balls to construction paper.

I admit that it took my mind a while to re-acclimate to the writing style of the time, not that it was difficult to read, it was just far too easy to skim. So, bringing my mind to a screeching halt, I sat down and began to truly read this wonderful novel. Let me begin with saying that the science in the novel is extremely outdated but at the time of it's writing, was plausible. If you can get your mind past the huge hurtle of your current scientific knowledge, you can appreciate this book for what it is: a brilliant science fiction/adventure novel. The conventions of the time include misunderstandings of the makeup of the earth, and the propensity to marry one's own cousins.

The book is written in the form of a diary at times, and a retelling at times, of events that had passed previously. The voice of the book is the character Harry, nephew and assistant to Professor Von Hardwigg. The novel begins with the professor's discovery of a secret parchment which when decoded gives the location that a previous explorer used to enter the bowels of the earth. The immediately set out to follow in the footsteps of this great explorer of centuries before. Joining them is Hans, the apparent superman of Iceland. He never complains, rarely talks, and saves the lives of those around him on a regular basis. I cannot help but to believe that this is Verne's ideal man, his "Adonis" if you will. The Professor, though he loves Harry, is a closet ADHD case hidden behind a brilliant and stubborn mind. There is great adoration for his nephew, on those occasions when he stops moving or talking long enough to notice him. Harry, who is telling the story, is easily written off as a coward; however he is so much more than that if you take into account the beliefs of the time. He is following his uncle on a dangerous journey into the unknown to a place he does not even believe exists. (Harry's beliefs are far closer to the reality that we understand, however in this novel they are all completely incorrect)

Upon entering the depths of the earth many hardships and terrors await the three, ranging from dehydration, starvation, dinosaurs, many falls, getting separated, raging storms on underground seas and volcanic eruptions. I won't go into great detail suffice to say that the movie, though highly entertaining, does no justice to this story. Spray painted iguanas with horns are far from what is described in this book. If you have spare time on you hands, this is an excellent read and I would highly recommend it to anyone. There is a reason that this is considered "Literature."

4 of 5 stars.

Our Beloved Hank Thompson....

Review Date: 2008-04-22
Hank Thompson has come full circle!

Along with the evolution of the series, we have seen the character of "Hank Thompson" grow and develop into a character that we can all cheer for, sympathize with and love. We all embrace the belief that Hank is just a man caught up in the circumstances of a life that he didn't necessarily want. We have seen him evolve from a promising baseball player (Caught Stealing), to a man on the run (Six Bad Things), to a pill popping Mob enforcer with poorly done facial reconstruction (A Dangerous Man), and now he is back in New York where it all started with his babysitting a friend's cat. Asked by his employer to protect a new investment (an up and coming baseball star, Miguel, who reminds Hank of himself), he finds his ugly past and $4 million dollar mistake coming back to haunt him. While Hank is doing everything possible to protect his newly relocated parents from harm, he also realizes that he is in yet again another "damned if he does, damned if he doesn't situation". He can either protect his family by doing what his employer wants or he can buck the system and do the right thing (by showing Miguel, who has so much potential and promise, how his gambling will become his downfall and endear him to people who aren't necessarily looking out for his best interest). And oh, there is still that problem of the missing $4 million dollars.

I thought that this was a wonderfully poignant conclusion to a wonderful trilogy. The epilogue was so well written that I found myself torn, that although I found peace with Hank's fate, I wanted so much more for him. Hank, was never truly bad, just caught up in circumstances beyond his control, making him perhaps the biggest victim of all. What I really enjoy about Hurston's writing style is his ability to weave in tragedy with hope and triumph, while investing the reader in the outcome and making them feel ok with whatever it is.

Although I would have preferred another ending for Hank, it was the most realistic. I hate to see the series end, but with other potential stories trapped in Hurston's head, this will definitely not be the last word from this very talented author. I can't wait to read his next body of work. And if you enjoyed this series, try Shotgun Rule and the Joe Pitt series. They are all a tall glass of refreshing water!

The Final Book in a Fast Paced Violent Thriller Trilogy Which All Started When a Neighbour Asked to Look After a Cat

Review Date: 2008-04-08
Henry (Hank) Thompson from Huston's sensational debut novel Caught Stealing returns in this even more violent, final volume of this rollercoaster thrill ride of a series that will have you saying a definite no, next time someone asks you to mind their cat. If you have not yet started reading this book and haven't actually read Caught Stealing you should put this novel aside, find a copy of Caught Stealing, also grab the second novel Six Bad Things: A Novel while your at and start reading where this great journey in order. A Dangerous Man gives away substantial chunks of both those former novel's plots. You will still be able to read this as a standalone but believe me you're going to want to enjoy the thrill ride of the first masterpiece and its sequel to their full extend and you certainly can't do so when you know what's going to happen!

If you were reading A Dangerous Man as a standalone it would be understandable as you read the initial Las Vegas chapters of this book that you feel no empathy for Henry at all and think he is a bit of a loser as drug addicted, he constantly contemplates ending it all with a shard of glass from his broken mirror, the mirror in the state it is as he doesn't want to have to look at the reconstructed face of the man he has become. Hank's life consists of putting bullets into the back of the heads of those who have gotten on the wrong side of his Russian keeper David Dolokhov after those victims are beaten unconscious by Branko, his minder. The only thing that keeps Hank from doing so is the knowledge that his parents will be killed the second he stops being useful. However a new assignment for Henry, baby sitting a new baseball prodigy who will dub him Scarface, will awaken Henry from his slumber and end the madness once and for all!

As a standalone A dangerous Man wraps up the series very realistically, although the action and thrill ride isn't as great as the initial Caught Stealing and slightly less than Six bad Things, but if you've read the first two, you've got to read this!

This was the perfect final book in the trilogy. Each book had a life of its own, building on one another to reach an inevitable end. Charlie Houston does a masterful job in making you empathize with this mass murderer who loves baseball and his parents. Beneath all the carnage, Hank just wants to do the right thing. Problem is, to get there the body count just keeps climbing.

In this iteration, Hank is haunted by a character that represents what he could have been...a baseball hero. It adds even more angst to Hank's massive list of problems, and forces him to make some tough decisions before the books end.

I tried to get my wife to read Caught Stealing, and while she loved the way it was written, she couldn't take the gore, so a bit of caution there. I saw an almost dark humor in the violence of all three books..maybe I'm just sick...

The third installment in the Henry Thompson trilogy stands alone as a fantastic, gritty novel that reaches into your every day life and changes the way you view your fellow man. The "guy next door" nature of the main character made this a book I just couldn't put down and sent me scrambling to find the first two books so that I might unravel the little mysteries of Henry's past and obtain a better understading of how he ended up in the mess he's in. If you like gangsters, (or even if you don't) Henry is definitely your man!

I have not loved absolutely everything I've made from this book, but I think it definitely deserves 5 stars. Firstly, it is a staple on my shelf. When I move back and forth for school between my two homes, it always comes with me. Also, two of my favourite recipes come from this book. And "favourite" is saying a lot when you're someone who owns over 20 vegan cookbooks. The Broccoli-Mushroom Phyllo Pie and the Sweet Potato Curry alone would make the book worth it. While I am not allergic to wheat, and while I don't have a child, I liked both these aspects of the book. I now have a better idea of what to feed my wheat-free friends. When I don't have spelt flour around, I have had no problems substituting all-purpose and whole-wheat pastry flour in these recipes. This book did, however, make my friend think that wheat-free meant gluten-free, which is not the case. Maybe this could have been made more clear.

I have many vegan cookbooks and, even though I often enjoy making elaborate, elegant meals with lots of ingredients, I find myself coming back to Dreena's recipes when I want something easy to prepare and yet delicious. Dreena has a knack for combining flavors to get the most out of minimal ingredients. I've made the Lemon-Herb Tofu countless times when I needed a quick dinner with minimal effort and the results are always excellent. Other favorites include the Creamy Hummus (easily my favorite homemade hummus recipe), Sweet Curry Chickpea Casserole, Lemon Rosemary Potatoes, and the Chickpea Ratatouille.

Dreena especially shines with her desserts. They are quick yet do not sacrifice flavor. She offers many alternatives to wheat-based baking (but keep in mind that it's always possible to substitute regular flour for the wheat flour alternatives she recommends); I made the gluten-free Chocolate P-nut Butter Squares for a friend who avoids wheat and they were wonderful. Her dessert recipes are "healthy" in the sense that they do not rely on processed food products like margarine, but Dreena does not shy away from using an appropriate amount of fat (in the form of canola oil) in the recipes to maximize flavor. Her Homestyle Chocolate Chip cookies are probably the best chocolate chip cookies I've had in my 11+ years as a vegan. Her Fudgy Brownies are the only vegan brownies I've had that replicate the dense, crackly-top (and not cake-like) brownies I remember from my pre-vegan days. And as someone who lives alone, I also love that the dessert recipes don't make a huge serving (although with the cookies, esp., it's easy to increase the recipe size).

Dreena also deserves credit for bringing hemp products into the vegan culinary spotlight, as hemp food products are incredibly healthful, and yet many vegans may not be familiar with them. I just made the Chocolate Hemp Squares, which were addictively delicious, and have been incorporating more hemp products into my diet as a result Vive Le Vegan.

Vive Le Vegan provides a great introduction to vegan cooking, one that will not intimidate even new cooks, and proves how delicious vegan food (especially desserts!) can be.

This is my new favorite cookbook! I've used lots of the recipes and found only 1 I didn't care to much for. I love all the wheat free options, as I have a friend who is wheat free. Lots of kid friendly recipes. The recipe for the fudgy brownies is worth the price of the book!!

Reliably delicious!

Every single thing I cook from this book is a winner. And I am the queen of modifying recipes from cookbooks, but I don't change Dreena's recipes. It is getting to the point where this cookbook nearly never makes it back to my bookshelf. The recipes are also so unique and yet use ingredients that are so accessible (and good for you!). And I am now cooking with grains I thought I hated. The recipes are full of options and explanations and extra information that it is just a fun read. The food is really, truly, reliably delicious! I think this cookbook is a must for even the most experienced vegan cook, and should be a must for every cook! Thank you so much for this cookbook, Dreena, and the others to come!

This cookbook is now one of my favorites, if only for its cookie recipes! Every single one has turned out beautifully, with the perfect soft texture, and she uses natural ingredients like maple syrup and canola oil rather than vegan margarines and egg replacers. I also like that the recipes are small and make only one batch of cookies. As much as I like to bake, I really don't need 36 cookies begging to be eaten! In addition to the fabulous cookie recipes, I ADORE the chickpea ratatouille...that's definitely a new favorite.

The Everyday Vegan is a great cookbook. It contains lots of versatile recipes that are for the most part easy to make and not time-consuming. I've been a lacto-ovo vegetarian for many years, but I'm new to being vegan and I've found this cookbook informative. I also appreciate that she is health conscious and avoids partially hydrogenated food items.

I use this book quite often. I find the recipes to be reliable (this is an issue these days) and excellent. As a cane sugare-free vegan, I look for cookie recipes that use fruit or agave nectar as the sweetening source. "Bill's Cookies" are absolutely delicious. But all the recipes I tried are very good and I highly recommend this book to all vegans, just beginning and experienced.

Excellent for those just beginning their vegan journey!

I found almost all of the recipes I tried to be VERY good. Some seem a little involved, but are worth the extra effort. I also love that most of the ingredients are "everyday" ingredients. And the introduction is VERY worth reading if you are new to being a vegan or just want to try out vegan foods.

Recipes to try: Mediterranean sauce (great cold as a leftover, too!), "Neat Balls", Savory tofu burgers. YUM!

I am not one who usually enjoys cooking and when I turned vegan I had a really hard time staying committed. I saw this book at Barnes and Noble when looking for a completely different book and I am so glad I choose this one! So many of the recipes are easy to make and they are GOOD! My dad is one of those people who thinks tofu is for wimps and I got him to try the tofu chimichanga and he actually liked it! I am always excited to cook now that I have this book. I never go hungry and I have been able to stick to my vegan choice for quite a while now.
They have several other topics in the book including what you can use for cleaning up, party ideas and pampering as well. My favorite parts are the guilt-free cookies...

Definitely a fantastic book even if you are not vegan.

I am an avid vegan cookbook collector and this is my favorite one of all! It has a ton of recipes, and they all come out tasting incredibly delicious despite being so easy to make. I can usually flip through this for a few minutes and realize that I can make several of the recipes with whatever I happen to have on hand -- no special shopping trips required. The book is worth buying for the "You-Must-Make-This-Dressing" alone. It's fantastic! Other faves are the Portobello Mushroom Bake (my meat-eating family loved it) and the Sensational Sundried Tomato and Chickpea Soup. Heaven in a bowl. If you're looking for cheap, easy and delicious recipes that will wow your family and friends AND which you can whip up on a weeknight when you're pressed for time, this is the cookbook for you. If you're trying to decide between this book and Vegan with a Vengeance, I recommend starting with this one.

Good things about this cookbook:

* Cheap, easy, fast recipes

* Contains quite a few recipes that I return to

Bad things:

* Many repeats from How it All Vegan!

* The index is not terribly user-friendly

* Many recipes are bland or just plain odd. I use them as starting points, and add my own ingredients from there

Overall, I use this and How it All Vegan! enough to keep them around, especially as I fill them up with my comments and additions. I have four vegan cookbooks, and I use the two by Kramer and Barnard about 1/4 of the time.

Yummm-y!

Ok, so I just tried one dish so far- made the mashed potato and fennel with gravy dish,=]mmmm Delicious!!!!! It took a while to make (I'm kinda slow...too) ...ok, like 2 hours (I'm really slow hee...and the dish is just time consuming in terms of cutting up the veggies..but if your fast/have it cut already..GREAT). But the results are yummmmm

And I'm not even vegan!...yet :p

Oh, and I really like this book because the recipes are easy! The ingredients are easily found in health food and regular supermarkets.

This line from Kane (on the technique used to dispatch a particularly evil foe), perfectly captures the impact of this Puritan killer's tales on the reader...

This is the definitive collection of Solomon Kane stories, and it's about time.

Great job.

Howard had a brilliant fast past writing style...he was definately far ahead of his time...as were many of the Weird tales writers. I will be very curious to see what they do with the movie. Definately a must for fans of the Pulp horror genre

Excerp from back of book; "With Conan the cimmerian, Robert E. Howard created more than the greatest action hero of the twentieth century-he also launched a genre that came to be know as sword and sorcery. But Conan wasn't the first archetypal adventurer to spring from Howard's fertile imagination.

"He was a strange blending of Puritan and Cavalier, with a touch of the ancient philosopher, and more than a touch of the pagan..A hunger in his soul drove him on and on, an urge to right all wrongs, protect all weaker things..Wayward and restless as the win, he was consistent in only one respect--he was true to his ideals of justice and right. Such was Solomon Kane."

Collected in this volume, lavishly illustrated by award-winning artist Garyl Gianni, are all of the stories and poems that make up the thrilling sage of the dour and deadly Puritan, Solomon Kane. Together they constitute a sprawling epic of weird fantasy adventure that stretches from sixteeth-century England to remote African jungles where no white man has set foot. Here are shudder-inducing tales of vengeful ghosts and bloodthirsty demons, of dark sorceries wileded by evil men and women, all opposed by a grim avenger armed with a fanatic's faith and a warrior's savage heart.

This edition also features exclusive story fragments, a biography of Howard by scholar Rusty Burke, and "In Memoriam," H.P. Lovecraft's moving tribute to his friend and fellow literary genius.

Other books to read are: Whole Wide World by Novalyne Ellis who was REH's girlfriend the last few years of his life and made into a DVD starring Renee Zellweger and Vincent D'Onofrio as REH, Blood & Thunder, The Life & Art of REH by Mark Finn, The Last of The Trunk by Paul Herman, and The Black Stranger & OTher American Tales that has the scariest story ever - Pigeons From Hell. All of REH works are great! Enjoy.

This has a rather interesting biographical introduction of Robert E. Howard, as an added bonus, so, certainly a volume of the Kane tales that is worth having, from that point of view, if you already have them, or most of them. There are also a couple of Solomon Kane poems, including two versions of Solomon Kane's homecoming.

Skulls in the Stars
The Right Hand of Doom
Red Shadows
Rattle of Bones
The Castle of the Devil
Death's Black Riders
The Moon of Skulls
The One Black Stain
The Blue Flame of Vengeance
The Hills of the Dead
Hawk of Basti
Wings in the Night
The Footfalls Within
The Children of Asshur

Kane is tracking, and being hunted by a swamp fiend, and realises when fighting it:

"For man's only weapon is courage that flinches not from the gates of Hell itself, and against such not even the legions of Hell can stand."

He finds the man that created the fiend, and adds the man to its list of victims, to appease it.

Solomon Kane is deep in cannibal country, when he comes across even worse. Flying man-beasts that are too many for him to fight, and he is overcome.

I received this as a gift and I didn't think I was going to like it because I am not a Conan fan. But I loved it! Solomon Kane is kind of like a Puritan Van Helsing. The stories are mix of horror and supernatural with a little mystery and superhero sprinkled in. This is a great classic style of storytelling. I recommend this for teen upwards and mainly for people who like the above mentioned categories, along with fantasy and science fiction. The tales in this book are short enough to read to relax before bed time (if you are not bothered by scary subject matter causing nightmares-never had a problem with that myself), and even the longer ones are so engaging that they read quick. I am pleased with this gift.
