David Watmough is one of Britains greatest living gay historians, and his latest oeuvre is a tribute to his dedication and fanatical attention to detail. I loved the way his breezy, almost conversational prose brings new light to such stories as the time Henry VIII pulled a pike out of the River Thames, or how, on Bosworth Battle field, King Richard had time to fetch a 28 pound mirror carp out of Ashby Pond, using only a horsehair line and a maggot bait.
I, for one, had no idea James I was a keen fly fisherman, and how, on many occasions he'd simply pop down to the burn and catch his own salmon for breakfast, or that in 1066 King Harold, just before he got shot in the eye, ate a hearty lunch of kippers that he'd caught and smoked himself the previous week. Wonderful, fascinating stuff. Warmly recommended.

Tomart's Price Guide to Radio Premium and Cereal Box Collectibles: Including Comic Character, Pulp Hero, TV and Other Premiums

An Essential Reference for Collectors

This book is a detailed description of premiums nostly obtained originally from Old-Time Radio shows and comic books. It catalogues each premium by character name (e.g., Captain Midnight, Tom Mix, Jack Armstrong), many with photographs. In addition to monochrome photos, there are also 12 pages of full-color collections of premiums by type (badges, rings, etc.) plus color cover photos of premiums. Author Tumbusch has researched the premiums diligently, which also include early television as well as radio, "premiums" from comic books and those as "prizes" in cereal packages.

In addition to listing values, Tumbusch makes a point of providing background, where possible, on the various premiums. Particularly for the new collector, the book makes it easy to identify some obscure ring or badge found at a flea market or garage sale.

The book is nearly a decade old, so the prices listed shouldn't be taken too seriously, though they might provide an idea of the relative values of premiums.

Even those not collecting such items should find the pictures and writeup of the premiums an interesting and informative perspective on the collectibles of yore.

The culinary philosophy that food is sexy

Gord Martin is the owner and chef of two Vancouver restaurants - Bin 941 and Bin 942. The culinary philosophy underscoring Martin's menus is that food is sexy and that the preparation of dishes, and act of dining, are sensual acts whether the setting is an intimate dinner for two or a celebratory blowout for dozens. From Scallop Ceviche with Minted Watermelon and Coconut Foam; BBQ Portobello Mushroom Cutlet and Seasonal Vegetables with Roast Garlic Balsamic Jam; Ibarra Mexican Chocolate and Bailey's Creme Brulee; to Wild Mushroom Reggiano Risotto with Truffle Oil Drizzle and Portobello Chips; Pan-Seared Wild Sockeye Salmon with Candied Shallot Beaujolais Reduction, Wild Rice Waffles, and Fresh Clipped Greens; and Cheesecake with Banana Foster Sauce, Tongue Twisters is a unique and very special addition to the cookbook collection of any adventurous kitchen cook!

The Fifth Grave is a retitling of Jonahtan Latimer's SOLOMON'S VINEYARD and may in fact be the heavily cut version, as this 1941 hardboiled noir novel was deemed too hot by censors for its then-graphic descriptions of sex. In its uncut version, it reads like a faster, nastier version of Dashiell Hammett's Red Harvest and at 124 pages, it's an impossible to put down page turner. Easily one of the best I've ever read and I give it 5 stars. I haven't read NIGHT SQUAD yet, but have loved every other David Goodis novel I've read. I'm sure it's a good read, though I can't presume to rate it; let me just say that SOLOMON'S VINEYARD alone is worth the price of admission (but only if this is the uncut version!). Note that you can get both the uncut SOLOMON'S VINEYARD and David Goodis' NIGHT SQUAD as free electronic downloads from publisher Blackmask.com's website. Unfortunately, Blackmask.com has never heard of spellcheck and does a lousy, amateur job of presenting their books, either as hardcopies or electronic downloads. But free is free! The only reason to buy this hardcopy version of the two novels is if it is the uncut version of SOLOMON'S VINEYARD and if this publisher does a better job of spellchecking. Well, that, and you prefer a hard copy...

I'm a frequent visitor to Victoria, and I find this book full of interesting facts and tidbits about the city--historical and otherwise. It's also got great listings for dining and shopping that I haven't found anywhere else. Victoria is a beautiful town, and this is a perfect guide, I think.

Dobozy writes a great story. His stories are fast and jagged - a well-deserved change from the usual slow, methodic fiction that has been clogging bookshelves. He deserves an award for this original, entertaining collection. Highly recommended.

The first volume(of a total of six) in Robert Sampson's comprehensive study of the history of pulp magazines and the varieties of heroes/vigilantes/detectives/etc. that existed.
Has plenty of black and white reproduction of old pulp covers, ranging from mysteries to westerns. The hardcovers are out of print, but it is still possible to locate new paperback copies.
