"The Thrill Book" is a legendary magazine, one of the holy grails of pulp collecting. Original copies sell for thousands of dollars -- if you can find them. Running for sixteen issues in 1919, it was a magazine of "strange, bizzare, occult, mysterious tales," but not quite a fantastic-fiction magazine, mixing various types of adventure stories with often outstanding fantasy, horror, and science fiction by Murray Leinster, Seabury Quinn, Francis Stevens, Perley Moore Sheehan, Tod Robbins, Edward Lucas White, Greye La Spina, and other giants of the pulp era. While sheer scarcity may have once added something to the lustre of "The Thrill Book," now that an issue is finally made available at an affordable price, the reader may appreciate that this truly was a pioneering -- and supremely entertaining -- publication.

Complete reproduction of the original title, right down to the advertisments for trusses, private investigator correspondence courses, and mail order 'good luck' numbers. Stories are varied, with the title piece a blockbuster. Highly recc'd.

Compiled and deftly edited by John Locke, Pulp Fictioneers: Adventures In The Storytelling Business is a unique and riveting anthology of true tales taken directly from the personal and professional lives of pulp fiction authors. Directly in the words from the men and women who set pen to paper and created the lively romance, horror, western, and science fiction tales during the "Golden Age" of pulp fiction magazines, Pulp Fictioneers tells it like it is -- from Arthur J. Burks' warning that a freelance writer who doesn't have a stable job is at the miserable mercy of the low-paying publishing industry bureaucracy, to Leo Marguilies' take on the changes in the pulps in postwar years Pulp Fictioneers is avidly enjoyable and enthusiastically recommended reading, with insights directly applicable to aspiring free-lance writers today.

Dr. Cronin demonstrates how well he's assimilated Indiana culture by charging ahead and tipping some sacred cows in this slim but enlightening work. Highly reccomended for anyone interested in contemporary libraries, library education, library workers and units of scholarly measurment.

This book is one wild ride! And it is true to its name of "Pulp Science Fiction". If you are a fan of those great pulps from the 50's and 60's you are going to love this book.
What do you get if you mix some HG Wells, a little Douglas Adams and a dash of Robert Howard? This novel is what you get. It has the Science Fiction of Wells, the humor of Adams and the furious action of Howard. In other words, it is all of the best of the pulp era all rolled up into one.

I was delighted to read a book in English about Acadian history. I married an Acadian and all the books on his family history were in French. I found it very relaxing to sit down in the evening and read this story of an Acadian family that settled in Maine.
I was transported back in time to the days of the expulsion of the Acadians. The early Acadians endured the hardships of being separated from their families, carrying practically only the clothes on their backs in the middle of winter. I journeyed with the family through several generations, from the pioneers, to the loggers, to the farmers, to the teacher, the storekeepers, and the soldiers.
I would recommend this book to anyone interested in history, and especially those with family ties to the Acadians.
