In this book, Lloyd Kaufman, president of the impossibly quirky Troma Studios, shares insights and practical advice about making low-budget (or no-budget) feature films. Lloyd's writing style is just as unusual as the movies he directs, as he meanders aimlessly from self-deprecating autobiography to detailed, spur-of-the-moment instructions on how to fake an onscreen head crushing or make actors appear to vomit green foam. There's also plenty of out-of-place crude and scatological humor peppered heavily throughout. I wouldn't have expected anything else from Kaufman, whose unfathomably eccentric (but amiable) personality and genuine love for the art of do-it-yourself filmmaking shine through on every page. Fans of Troma, young and old, owe it to themselves to read this book. It really is an inspiring read for all of us who have the filmmaking bug but often become too easily defeated by lack of funds or crew members. Long live Troma!

[...]I got this book as a birthday present in Christmas of '05, back when I was entertaining ideas of becoming a filmmaker in addition to just being a critic. While the need for actually putting something up on the big (or little) screen has passed for the time being, I am forever grateful for the spell due to the fact that it put this book (and Lloyd's equally engaging MAKE YOUR OWN DAMN MOVIE) in my possession. When I was done reading it, I knew two things: Lloyd is an amazing human being, and the only limits for success are those we put upon ourselves.

No matter what your passion is, Lloyd Kaufman gives you the inspiration to go out and damn well do it. Don't have the money to do it? Find a way to make it happen regardless. You'll never have all the money you want/need to do things the way you want to, unless you sell your soul to the godless corporations, so just kick that imagination of yours into high gear and get the job done. I recently edited a horror film reference book - a lifelong dream - and much of that inspiration came from meeting Mr. K on and off the page.

I have met Lloyd several times since at various conventions and am always impressed by his passion and his accessibility to his fans. He is constantly surrounded by adoring admirers, but he takes the time to acknowledge each one of them and everyone who comes in contact with him feels that they have had a "real" moment with Lloyd. That is a true gift. But if you want to spend some quality time with the great man himself, pick this book up. You'll have a new best friend and a new hero to look up to.

Into the mind of a truly independent Film director.

If you've ever watched a Troma film then you know what to expect from this book. Blood/gore, sex, nudity, head-crushings and more. Only in book form. What starts out as a how-to quickly breaks out into a great history of Troma films.
Lloyd Kaufman tells it like it is (in his mind that is.) But also comes across as genuinely passionate about what he does.
The only thing I can say is that if you've ever watched a Troma film and enjoyed it (even a tiny bit) then get this book.
Don't forget Lloyd's other book "Make Your Own Damn Movie!" and the Toxic Avenger Paperback.
Money spent on Troma is money spent on the things that make movies fun!

Granted, it's more of a guide to life for people that have had their lives turned upside down by falling into a vat of toxic waste, but a guide to life nonetheless. More importantly, you no longer have to bother jamming a DVD into your DVD player (or a tape into your tape player if you want to watch it the way it was intended to be watched), because you can just pick up the book and read the words. Yee haw.

This is one of the most exciting books to come out in recent memory, with his irreverant off-the-wall humor, Lloyd Kaufman has rocked the literary world with The Toxic Avenger: The Novel. I got this book after reading Make Your Own Damn Movie, which I picked up since I'm a huge fan of Lloyd Kaufman's truly independent cinema, and I can say, everyone who enjoys positive things about the world should pick up this book. Seriously, it was a quick read yet I go back to it again and again. It's like reliving the movie-in print!

Also, if you get a chance, see other films in the Troma collection. I personally can't wait for Poultryguest to come out, but my favorite is still Terror Firmer, or maybe Tromeo & Juliet.

This is the best wine book that you will ever find. Gluckstern explains the different wines in a down to earth manner. He is all about drinking wines that taste good, not wines that some overblown critic tells you are good. If you want the real story on wines get this book to help you out!

Good reading.

Very good reading for beginners. This little book will teach you a lot in less than 200 pages. Its strength relays on the tips for picking wine and how to match it with food. The author is very enthusiastic about whites, yes, especially for German whites, but since they are not the most popular or well known, the information turns out to be valuable. If you don't feel confident about what you know, keep this book close and open it any time you have to make a decision. It has a helpful index.
One mistake, though, in page 168. Ceviche is not Mexican, but Peruvian in origin, though it's true that a Proseco, like any other sparkler is good match for it. Most Peruvians eat their ceviche, and their amazing seafood, with beer, when the perfect company is near by: the Blanc de Blancs from Tacama (from Ica, in the southern coast of Peru).
The Wine Avenger is a very accessible book and will be enjoyed by beginners and people who want to avoid a sophisticated vocabulary (i.e. most of us).

The best aspect of this book is that it tells you in good detail how to pair wine with food. One of the most under-appreciated wines, the German Riesling, is also one of the best food wines, and is an excellent value because it is so un-loved by the popular wine community. This book shows you how to love Riesling and many other inexpensive, food-friendly wines. I first read this book many years ago and still consider it to be the best book I have ever read on wine.

All you need to shut a wine snob up.

I love Willie, and recommend this book to anyone interested yet intimidated by the world of wine. His whole thesis is that most of us drink our wine with food, and the market is flooded by expensive wines that are almost completely incompatible with the food we eat today. Thus, readers of this book experience a wealth of insight about inexpensive wines that will truly be enjoyable with meals at home or out in restaurants. He explains the often complex world of European wines (most of which continue to represent a better value than their New World counterparts, both in cost and taste), inflicts a mortal wound on the logic of those for whom chardonnay and merlot are the beginning of white and reds everywhere, and generally has a lot of fun presenting his world to the layman. There isn't an ounce of pretension in this book, and because of that, its accessible to everyone, even those who already have a bit of wine knowledge. It should be noted, also, that he's no gifted amateur. He's been in the business for decades, and has written the wine lists at several excellent restaurants. Cheers!

Best and most easy to understand book and very witty!

This little book is a gem and a real bargain. In a small space it manages to cover the whole gamut of the wine world including European wines. It also cuts through the jargan and delivers what you really need to know in a straightforward and very witty manner.

I own a number of books on wine and if I had to choose between this book and keeping all of the other ones, I would keep this ONE book! It's really that good. It has saved me money in terms of buying good inexpesive wines, increased my enjoyment of wine with food by learning how to pair food and wine correctly. It also gave me the knowledge I needed to discuss wine intelligently with anyone.

This author is NOT out to be politically correct or to make friends in the wine industry. I think the same is true of the restuarant industry because he is very blunt in his criticisms, particularly of over-priced restaurant wine. His use of words along these lines accounts for much of the humor in his writing.

If you know of anyone who has wine as a hobby they will enjoy reading this. If you are intimidated by the world of wine, you wouldn't be after you finish this book. It will also save you money and open up new worlds in terms of differnt types of wine from all over the world.

The Plaid Avenger really does break the textbook mold. Most of the time, I try to read my textbooks, and end up falling asleep at my desk. This book, however, is incredibly informative about the world we live in, and manages to keep the reader awake, paying attention, and even laughing. So what if there are a few expletives and references to alcohol? This is a book that will actually be read by students, and will provide a much-needed understanding of the world as they prepare to go out into it. I know I won't be selling back my copy after exams...

I must admit that I was a little skeptical about how this was going to be recieved at first being a new author and all, I didn't expect readers to be swept away. Then I read some of my e-mails and like a water slide where you get past that safety bump, I was just blown away. I've been hearing everything from the characters being all very likeable and real. to Standoffish being the new evil henchman for the 00's with a new hero (Cody) that seems to counter and compliment him perfectly. My favorite one is from my biggest fan in Oregon who let me know that "the story was slick, fast and enjoyable with the extra pleasure of a story finally taking place in Indiana. This is a book that I highly recommend to readers who are looking for a good time and one fast-leaving you wanting more-read." Thank you all and God Bless you as well as our men and women overseas.

What a great book! I'm the kind of person that when reading a book, it has to be exciting and interesting from the very first page or else I'll set it down and let it collect dust. That did not happen with U.S. Avengers! I was hooked! I couldn't put it down. I was even dreaming about Cody and the U.S. Avengers! This story stays with you from beginning to end. I'm very excited to read U.S. Avengers II and see what happens next! I'll surely be watching for it!

Avengers of the New World: The Story of the Haitian Revolution
By Laurent Dubois

The book for me was very informative and the writing style makes it an easy read for the masses. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience, and I am encouraged to learn even more about Haiti and the Revolution and how it sent shock waves throughout the western world.

I am beginning to understand why the west has a policy of pretending that Haiti doesn't exist. Their feelings are still hurt that a bunch of African slaves defeated the most powerful army at that time - Napoleon's army. Not only that, Haiti's defeat of the French army encourage and gave hope to the slaves of North America. Can anyone say Nat Turner, Denmark Vesey and Gabriel Prosser?! During Denmark Vesey's trail, there was testimony from his co-conspirators that he had connections with Haiti, and after burning down Charleston, the Haitians were ready to receive them.

After Napoleon's defeat, he had to sell his US territory for a song. Y'all may know it as the Lousiana Purchase. The English purchased the land and double the size of the US.

Of course, their intention was to expand slavery in North America.

I give this book a five star and highly recommend it for an easy read and introduction of the Haitian Revolution.

This book was a true pleasure to read. DuBois is the kind of historian who deserves to be teaching high school students (I mean this as a compliment) because while makes sure to include all relevant details about the Haitain revolution, he makes this book read like a fascinating story. This is a wonderful and well developed book, suitable for both laymen and scholars.
I am pleased that DuBois kept his editorializing to a minimum and described the events of the Haitian revolution in a very much nuanced manner. I recommend this this book to anyone looking for a detailed, but surprisingly easy to read discussion of that famous "first successful slave rebellion."

The Amerikkkan government has repeatedly blocked loans to Haiti from the IMF, that would raise Haitians quality of life by providing clean water, roads and medical supplies. Why would such a super hyper-power as the U.S. stoop so low as to block much needed aid to it's tiny island neighbor, after the International Monetary Fund was ready to release the loans?

Apparently their "is somebody to blame for their grinding poverty" besides "bad karma".

The Haitians represent the unconquered slave, the valiant Africans who's military genius and tactics are studied even today. Those Haitians who sent Napoleons 60,000 plus army back across the sea, allowing a ungrateful America to acquire the Louisiana Territory.

It is clear to me now, as it was to Dessalines then, that more "whites chopped up by angry blacks" should have taken place, (rather than a loyalty to a country they never saw, France) as it is really all that ignorant Europeans and their European-American cousins understand.

They lack the requisite moral courage and intelligence to right any wrongs as it pertains to Africans through out the diaspora.

Mr. Baxter would undoubtedly have become the victim of a sugar cane machete, at the very least for suggesting that " slavery was better than the conditions back home", which would seem funny were it not so sad of a commentary.

Zeus: The Avenger by Reginald Beal is an intriguing story about Rick Champion and his plight to find out who killed Martin Luther King Jr. Rick is an employee of IBM and along with two of his best friends, Rick, they set out to start their own company and avenge the death of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Rick is a well-versed black man who will stop at nothing to prove that he is right, has special powers and believes in astrology. Stumbling across Angela Bourne, an astrologer, who taps into his psychic, Rick, is ready to take the bull by the horns. Angela opens Rick to the possibilities that he can turn his life around, and be able to foresee the future.

With guided stealth, Rick and his fellow partners embark on a ride of their lives that they will never forget. While a start-up company is always hard to keep above ground, these guys are faced with being black-balled, sued for millions, reputations tarnished and fighting for the freedom to belong. Heart-felt and emotional, the characters are realistically portrayed and believable even in this day and age. Can Rick hide behind his astrological profile of Zeus: The Avenger, or will he become the powerful Victor he commands to be? After thirty years of seeking justice for Dr. King's murder, will Rick forgo vengeance?

This book is filled with social and economic issues, as well as daily prejudices and belonging. Mr. Beal approached a touchy subject with this book, and left me wanting to know more. This book has a little bit for everyone, science-fiction, astrology, history, and mystery. I recommend this book to readers of all genres. And I look forward to Mr. Beals' next book.

"My magic is training.. My strength is adaptability.. My enemy is carelessness.. My strategy is one foot in front of the other.." This is part of the Ninja litany, etched into your mind if you are lucky enough to defeat the opening character, who sets the scene for these Way of the Tiger books. They have the usual ingredients: magic, monsters, Ninja tricks and the most horrific and engaging death scenes, that will have you flicking to the 'eye' illustrations, which mark an unfortunate end (of which, thankfully, there are many) whenever you make a wrong turn in this exciting, engaging "magical world of Orb". But more than that, these books have heart and depth. You can see that the author's have spent countless hours pouring over the plot and creating an imaginary land that stays with me still. A fond reminder of a moment in my childhood, when I'd disappear into these books and take on the adventures of the orphan, a highly trained assassin on a quest for revenge. As if the text wasn't enough, you have it set against the amazing artwork of Bob Harvey, who became on of my favourite illustrators, even though I have never seen his work outside these books.

Fascinating, intensely absorbing entertainment.

I read "The Way of the Tiger" series as a kid... it was one of the most exciting, unbelievably inspiring and moving (!) reading experiences I have had, then or now... and I'm comparing to stuff such as the works of Victor Hugo, Ayn Rand etc.

A unique, must read book for role playing fans.

I still remember reading this book back when I was a kid. I must have read it a dozen times and each time it was a different experience. I have never read anything like it. Truely a classic for young adults and for fans of the art of Ninjitsu.

The Serpent Crown is a device than an alien has used to control The Squadron Supreme on their world, and they need help from The Avengers to undo the damage.

This produces a great team up and cross world story, and as an added bonus, we have the appearance of the Hellcat, a definite favorite.

Yes, the Perez art is very nice, but I remember these stories for the writing of Steve Englehart, who almost single-handedly revived my interest in comics in the mid-70's. I couldn't figure out why one story was called "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under Justice" until I realized that the Squadron Supreme was a witty take-off on the (then) cardboard DC characters of the Justice League. It was particularly amusing when, a couple of years later, Englehart moved over to DC to actually write the JLA, and had great fun with them as well. Englehart was the supreme comics writer of the 1970's and he's still one of the best around today, though he doesn't work as often as I'd like.

In this collection, you'll AVENGERS VOL. 1 # 141-144, 147-149. #'s 145-146 is a different story arc because of deadlines I suppose.
Anyway, in this collection the Avengers are faced with double trouble: to intercept KANG THE CONQUEROR'S plan to rule the world by going to the 19th century and a crisis in the present time with the ROXXON CORPORATION. Issue # 141 is the set up of the twin crisis, #142-143 deals with the 19th century and 144, 147-150 deals with the climax of the SQUADRON SUPREME saga.
THOR AND MOONDRAGON 9with IMMORTUS' assistance)travel back in time to find their teamate HAWKEYE in the western era. They encounter Marvel's greatest western heroes: TWO GUN KID, KID COLT, RAWHIDE KID, RINGO ETC in a struggle against Kang. The final one on one battle between kang and THE MIGHTY THOR was short but sweet as well as when they took the TWO GUN KID back with them to the 20th century.
As a kid, this was one of the very first times I have really seen THE VISION against 3 Squadron members including their most poerful member: HYPERION, and quite literally ran over him. The other battles with CAPTAIN AMERICA, IRON MAN , THE BEAST & THE HELLCAT (this is also the very first time Patsy Walker donned the Catsuit)against DOC SPECTRUM, THE WHIZZER, AMPHIBION, TOM THUMB ETC(JLA RIP -OFFS). were also well drawn and quite fast-paced ala GEORGE PEREZ(one of my favorite artists)
THE HIGHTLIGHT OF THIS COLLECTION I BELIEVE IS: Thor taking on Kang alone, The Vision taking on HYPERION(marvel's Superman rip-off)and the first appearance of the Hellcat.
A good read for any 70's comic fan. It was well beyond its time.
Also: DO NOT MISS STRACYNSKI'S SUPREME POWER, starring HYPERION.
I have the comic collection, get the TP

a wonderful story, from cowboys to aliens and everything in between

Ok i didn't know what to expect from this book, it sounds like a jumble of stuff, in a short space you have a justice league rip off, travels to another world, evil companies ad a whole government turning evil, a trip to the old west with a bunch of old west stars, fights with their worst enemy kang and a finsh against a giant whale man..but they are able to pull it off.

the story starts with the teams splitting into two squads, one must travel to the old west and rescue their friend hawkeye, the other has to take down the roxxen company, the tales come together at the end, but the pacing all through it is great, it's a lot of sci-fi fun, time travel, alternate worlds, huge super battles with a justice league copy called squadren supreme.

the name of the book comes from the serpant crown, it takes control of the people who wears it, the company owner of roxxen on the avengers earth and the president rockafeller led government on the supreme earth, the avengers have to face the squad and get the crown back to their earth and do something about it before its too late.

while they are doing that the other team must rescue their friend in the old west, and run into the time traveller kang, who is holding an old west town hostage, it's a great story and the old west heroes, some who pre-date marvels super heroes like thor and spidey and others, are really fun, the biggest problem..you want more of them and maybe they will release a western trade one day.

also in this title is hellcat, a new avenger, she was part of marvels "girl comics" line in the 40's, their answer to archie and had titles like patsy and her pals, when she lost her book after about 20 years they turned her into of all things a super hero named hellcat, you see how that happens here and it's really good.

the book has great art by george perez, a few dated parts, but overall is a heck of a fun read, has some of their best villains, if your an avengers fan get this.

oh and the two missing issues were a fill in between the story and they eft them out to keep the flow there, your not missing anything.

Covert Avengers by Jess Parker is the second book in a three book series in the Jake Green saga. Covert Avengers is military thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat as the author, Jess Parker so vividly brings the characters of this book alive on the pages. Jake Green has now left Detachment X-ray and is now an aide for a US Senator. Jakes becomes involved in conspiracy that involves an assassination attempt on a world political leader, an ambush to help some friends and an overall cover up to keep those involved from being exposed. Covert Avengers is very well written and will definitely keep you turning the pages to see what transpires next. If you enjoy military stories along with mystery and intrigue, then Covert Avengers is the book for you.

With the assignments in Korea completed, Detachment-Xray has been disbanded.
Now, in Covert Avengers, Jake Green is once again conscripted by his government for more special assignments; wet work that he and his group are especially trained for. Already experienced, Detachment-Xray will now take on the more covert operations in civilian and government settings.
These are the jobs we like to hide in the back of our consciousness; dirty jobs that, at least in the minds of the planners, must be done to preserve our freedom.
Some readers will sleep easier after reading Covert Avengers. Others will not...

More of the same....yippee!!

For those of us who enjoyed Parker's first novel "Detachment X-Ray"...it was like a reunion reading "Covert Avengers"...most appealing to this reader at least is the abundant use of dialogue that gives the feeling to the reader that they are right smack dab in the middle of the action. And there is always plenty of action in Parker's books. Outstanding!

As great as the first.

In the previous book (Detachment X-Ray) Jake Green "Navy" had told Major Long Ball Kwong that the next time they met Jake would gut him. Surprise, surprise, when Long Ball appeared with a trade delegation from the People's Republic of China as Mr. Dong Ping (future Premier).

Jake had been in deep cover, ordered after he left Detachment X-Ray. He emerged and became Staff Assistant to a United States Senator, Sam Martin. Jake had been at a U.N. conference when he spied Long Ball. Jake was lucky enough to get the best secretary on the Hill and her big boyfriend was a small arms expert. Better yet, Jake struck gold when he hired a red haired Irish lass as his driver. She was THE BEST when tails from the FBI, CIA, and the Chinese Secret Service had to be shook off!

Jake, his new staff, and comrades from the Korean War got together to deal with a mountain feud, stop a drug running operation (via sea), and make plans for Long Ball.

**** Very few sequels to books and movies are as good as the original. Yet Jess Parker has succeeded in doing it here. It was fast paced and non-stop all the way through the novel with a climatic ending that left me laughing and begging for more! I can only hope the author is considering a third for Jake Green. I am so happy to be able to highly recommend this book, and its author, to everyone I meet! *****
