Kirby Brown is heartbroken and stunned when she returns home to find that her roommate and best friend, Helen, has been viciously slaughtered. Kirby is shocked and petrified, but is immediately taken into police protection because they believe she might be in danger as well.

They're right.

Doyle Fitzgerald had been a thief, but is now a coveted member of the Damask Circle. He has been sent to investigate the murders in Melbourne, Australia, because it appears that dark magic is involved. He barely arrives in time to save Kirby from the killer, and from that point on, they are on the run for their lives.

Kirby has never learned to trust anyone outside of Helen, and now she has to trust Doyle with her life. She's learning things about herself she never before knew and remembering a past she's tried desperately to forget. And through it all Doyle stands by her, protects her, and teaches her how to use the powers that are rightly hers.

But can they survive the evil that is now after them both?

I have been a fan of Keri Arthur since her very first book. And, with each successive book she only gets better and better, which just blows me away because I love each book so much! CIRCLE OF DEATH is an action packed, paranormal love story that should be on every readers "must read now" list. If you love paranormal romance, than there is no doubt in my mind that you'll love Keri Arthur's books. Read and enjoy!

Kirby Brown and Helen Smith are as close as sisters are so when Kirby comes home to see Helen and her lover's body savaged, she's bereft and horrified. Helen was a witch and Kirby has powers of her own so she knows that the two policemen that are guarding her are something evil. She escapes from them only to see them come after her in their true form, reptilian like monsters.

She would have died if shapechanger Doyle Fitzgerald hadn't appeared on the scene. He dispatches the two monsters and the vampire that comes after them. Doyle is part of the Damask Circle; an organization consisting of people with paranormal powers that fight the evil forces that are loose on the world. His current assignment is to track down a witch who is targeting other practitioners of magic and the only one who can stop her is Kirby. Doyle, who loves Kirby, tries to protect her but he can't guard her from her own fears for only she can do that if she dares.

Keri Arthur is one of the better writers of supernatural romances and her Damask Circle series is a perfect example of how she makes the extraordinary seem believable. CIRCLE OF DEATH will appeal equally to paranormal, romance and mystery fans. The characters make the paranormal seem normal; the romance between the shapeshifter and the witch is utterly believable; and the mystery will key the readers into turning the pages, eager to find out who is doing the killings and why.

Kirby and Helen are orphans raised together by the foster care system. They are also witches. Helen developed her gift as a storm witch, and Kirby supressed hers. When Helen is killed by a monster, she is devastated. Then she is attacked herself and escapes, she is aided by the Damask Circle, particularly Shapeshifter Doyle Fitzgerald. The Circle is in the area because of the deaths of witches, someone is killing them and absorbing their powers. Kirby is on the monster's hit list.

This novel is just as good as Circle of Fire. Doyle, Russell and Camille are believable (if that's possible) as paranormal detectives. There is alot of action of all kinds in this one, I finished it in one sitting.

A wonderful paranormal romance

Kirby Brown has only had one person she could ever count on, her best friend. When her friend was brutally murdered by a psychotic, and otherworldly, killer, Kirby was left all alone and scared, for the same killer was after her. She has no idea who is after her or why, but she does know her life is in serious danger. She goes on the run, with only a few meager possessions, and her magical powers as her defense. That is not enough and just as she fears her life is about to be snuffed out, her rescuer arrives.

Doyle Fitzgerald is in Melbourne, Australia, per the orders of the Damask Circle, a special and elite ring of magical beings who are sent to handle special cases all over the world where magic is concerned. His latest mission is to hunt down and destroy the very murderer who is after Kirby. He comes to her rescue, just as she is about to be killed, killing the monster that was after her, but having no idea how to track down the being that is using the creatures.

Kirby has no idea why someone is after her, but Doyle is, and she is shocked to hear the story. She has no memory of her childhood, or of the incident that seemed to spark this string of serial murders. What she doesn't know, is Kirby is one of a circle of women... witches... who have the power to control the elements. Kirby is the last remaining witch of this circle, the only person standing in the way of her ultimate enemy having all the powers at her disposal, and causing awesome destruction in her wake.

Doyle finds himself completely attracted to Kirby, as she is to him, and he will do anything to protect her. However, she isn't the only one with secrets and gifts, for Doyle has some special powers of his own. Powers he is hesitant to share with her just now. Her nerves are at the breaking point already and he fears she couldn't handle his secret on top of everything else. As much as she is drawn to him, she fears getting too close, for she knows the awesome strength of her abilities and she doesn't want him to be threatened by what she has little control over. Will they overcome their secrets? Will they defeat the person stalking Kirby? Or will the world end in the ultimate battle of good versus evil?

What a fabulous read! This story has all the elements of good paranormal romantic fiction. There is plenty of driving action and suspense to keep one's attention right up to the very end. There is love and romance, magic, good and evil. There is also any number of paranormal beings found between the covers. It is populated with vampires, witches, demons, and shapeshifters galore; it will make the readers wonder what secrets their friends and loved ones are carrying.

Ms. Arthur shows in this book why she is rising through the ranks of this sub-genre quite rapidly. She shows impressive talent in her writing, with snappy dialogue between the characters, and enough surprises in the plot to pack a wallop. One will be moved by the plight of Kirby and Doyle, as well as their friends. This book will keep a reader on the edge of the seat, eagerly awaiting the next book by an up and coming author.

This work contains the details of classic horrors. i.e.
- Phantom of the Opera
- The Magician
- Dr. Mabuse
- Frankenstein
- Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
- The Mummy and White Zombie
- King Kong
- Cat People
- Hauntings and Possessions

Photos by Boris Karloff, the Bride of Frankenstein and Son of
Frankenstein provide an historic dimension to the overall
presentation. Lesser horrors are included; such as, the Creature
from the Black Lagoon , The Mole People and Monster on Campus.
The photos of Fredric March and John Barrymore depict the
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde characters in all their glory. A first

horror enthusiasts. The cost is modest for the value provided.

Having owned this book since the first printing in 1975, I have used it as a guidance tool to track down and watch over the past 29 years the excellence that is horror films outlined in this book. The late author clearly has a firm grasp of the element of a successful horror film; i.e. lighting, timing, musical score (or lack thereof), delivery, etc., and contained within this volume are critically acclaimed classics as well as little known "nuggets" worth searching out, such as "Murder in the Zoo," "Strangler in the Swamp," and the last of the great horror films, "Night of the Demon." Since the book's release, many of the titles have become increasing accessible both in video and in DVD, which allow for a greater enjoyment by the classic horror audience. You won't find any of the latter day slasher, gore-fest "movies," but you will find a careful synopsis and examination of each film contained in this volume. My recommendations to watch after reading this book are: Night of the Demon, The Uninvited, The Devil Doll, and The Man Who Laughs (silent).

Having grown up watching classic sci-fi, horror and monster movies on Saturday afternoons, I couldn't wait to read this book. It's a well-researched, enjoyable history of Classic Horror Films, from the 20s through the Exorcist. Everson does a fine job of covering the well known films, as well as pointing out a few classic sleepers (e.g., Murders in the Zoo) If you love these films, this book is a must read. Lots of great photos as well!

Wilson is an absolute master of the weird tale, and a writer whose prose is a pleasure in itself. How can you resist an opening sentence like this one from "The Casino Mirago": "At the end of a very long chain of many things gone most astonishingly wrong I found myself booked out of season under an assumed name in the grandest suite of a Hotel Splendide located on the coast of Portugal."?

An excellent collection!

I've always liked Gahan Wilson's cartoon collections... They're easily on par with those of the late Charles Adams. This collection of short stories is right on the mark. Sometimes jarring, sometimes thought-provoking, always entertaining. I strongly recommend "The Cleft and Other Odd Tales."

What an unusual book! This is my first exposure to any of Mr. Wilson's work and I am completely charmed. The illustration at the start of each story provides a clue to it's ending. It became fun to study the picture and hope that I could guess what was to come. I was never able to do it! The stories are a complete and engaging mystery until the very end. I especially enjoyed the macabre view Mr. Wilson took of several characters from the literature of my childhood. "The Sea Was Wet as Wet Could Be" seems like the sort of fairy tale the would result from joint writing between Robert Louis Stevenson and Steven King. Odd and unexpected tales that were a genuine joy to read. I can't wait to explore the rest of Mr. Wilson's work.

This collection features nearly four decades of the cartoonist's short fiction, culled from sources as diverse as Playboy magazine, the ground breaking Dangerous Visions anthology, The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, and Omni magazine. As stated in the publicity materials, "Sometimes amusing, sometimes frightening, Wilson's short fiction is as eclectic as his cartooning." Like those cartoons, Wilson's stories are macabre, dark, and humorous, strange little forays into the weird and bizarre. My personal favorite was Wilson's tribute to Sax Rohmer and Fu Manchu, "The Power of the Mandarin," an engaging examination of the tension between authors and their creations.

I just received Cloud Watcher and haven't started it yet. If it is anything like her first 2 of the series it has to be great. The Watchers are yummy and the heroines are very independent and show a lot of courage. I have also enjoyed her Society series and am looking forward to more of them. I have introduced my 3 daughters to Ms. Saintcrow and they have enjoyed her too.

Please keep up the fantastic work and look forward to many more to come.

Anya Harris has been fleeing from city to city, trying to avoid the Dark that wants to destroy her. Anya is a Lightbringer but is unaware of her heritage. She only knows she has the talent of Persuasion. Accompanied by Shell Garritson, she arrives in Santiago City to find a haven among the three Guardians (see DARK WATCHER, STORM WATCHER, and FIRE WATCHER for their stories) only to meet Watcher Jack Gray. Jack knows instantly that he's found his witch in Anya, the only Lightbringer whose touch doesn't hurt him, but he has a dark secret. Will his secret destroy them as the Brotherhood once again threatens the sanctuary of Santiago City?

CLOUD WATCHER is the fourth book in the phenomenal series about the Watchers and the Lightbringers and continues the same excellence exhibited in all three previous books. While CLOUD WATCHER contains enough information to be a stand alone novel, readers will appreciate the world Ms. Saintcrow has created far more if the series is read in order.

Lilith Saintcrow is without a doubt one of the top writers of urban fantasy today. Her crisp prose and taut plotlines are carefully crafted for maximum impact. Her vividly drawn characters are so realistic this reviewer feels as if she is visiting old friends whenever characters from previous books reappear. Jack is perhaps the darkest character yet in this series, as his secret is a horrible one. However, Ms. Saintcrow uses his love and caring for Anya to allow the goodness that is his core to shine through.

CLOUD WATCHER is a spectacular addition to the Watcher series. Readers are in for a treat with this one as Lilith Saintcrow produces yet another superb story. Lilith Saintcrow truly is a master in the urban fantasy genre!

Anya Harris feels all alone in the world as she flees the Dark fires that no one else seems to see. Her only companion as she runs from "the persuasion" is Shell, who depends on her for his well-being as he apparently is a "downs syndrome" person.

In Santiago City, she knows she needs a job that will enable her to also keep Shell safe. Instead she meets Watcher Jack Gray, whose centuries of dedication to Circle Lightfall may not redeem him for the atrocities he committed. Jack realizes she is the witch who he has waited seemingly forever to come into his life. He must protect her and her ward with his heart and soul as the Dark has followed her here. Used to having no one protect her back or someone steal her heart, Anya rejects his efforts to keep her safe; still her presence gives him some hope of redemption for the evil he did before he became a Watcher.

The Lilith Saintcrow "Watcher' romantic fantasy (see DARK WATCHER, STORM WATCHER, and FIRE WATCHER) is a terrific tale starring two interesting protagonists. Anya trusts no on except Shell who is almost totally dependent on her. Jack has waited forever for his soulmate to bewitch him so has begun to lose faith that he will ever meet her. When they do meet both are stunned, but he knows he first needs to keep her safe because her skills make her special and worth millions, but to do that he also must protect Shell. CLOUD WATCHER is a strong entry in a terrific series.

Fourth book in the Watcher series

Review Date: 2006-11-17
I have enjoyed all the other books in this series and this one is no different. I liked the idea of a woman who doesn't know she is a witch and because of the things she sees she doubts her sanity.

Anya is running before the fires of the Dark. She does not know she is a witch and she is afraid of what she calls "the persuation". Somewhere along the way she has picked up an older boy, Shell, with what sounds like "downs syndrome". She takes care of Shell and he depends on her. They barely escaped the last time. With very little money or possessions she needs a job. Preferrably somewhere she will still be able to keep an eye on Shell.

Jack Gray is one of the oldest Watchers. He has never found his witch in all these many years and he doubts he ever will. Even if he does, his burden of guilt, tells him she will never accept him. He hopes that the hundreds of yrs he has served Circle Lightfall, many give him some hope of redemption for the evil he did before he became a Watcher.

We learn more about the Watchers and about the beginnings of Circle Lightfall and the Crusade. Although her devotion to Shell is admirable, we also see his need to have and control Anya. Anya has had no help and protection, she has had to fight the Dark alone for too long. She has troubling accepting Jack, for who and what he is. She also has trouble accepting who and what she is.

The Dark has chased her here, and now she is vulnerable to their intrigues. Jack has to convince her she must let him protect her, because her power and abilities are worth a fortune to others, and the Dark and the Crusade will never let her live if they can kill her.

I really enjoyed this book and I look forward to more. Lilith Saintcrow is very talented at creating wonderful and unusual worlds. So far every one has been a keeper.

This is a great book for everyone interested in Stephen King's works. I have read a great deal of his work, so I imagine that I am one of those that falls under the 'Constant Reader' title, and this book had me noting that I had missed some of the overlaps and complexity of his many books. I look forward to reading his books again, and catching even more, thanks to this book.

However, this is also good for the more casual Stephen King reader, as it guides you through his worlds and his books. The authors give very good analyses of each book and each world, sorting through the myriad of characters and ideas that Stephen King uses (quite deftly, in my opinion).

A little background info for those of you who have happened upon this offering. THE COMPLETE STEPHEN KING UNIVERSE is an updated version of THE STEPHEN KING UNIVERSE, which was published in May 2001. The CSKU features nine new chapters, which cover King's work from approximately early 2000 through mid 2005. The CSKU discusses all of King's work through that period, including books like DREAMCATCHER, FROM A BUICK 8, the final three installments of the Dark Tower series, and television series such as Rose Red and Kingdom Hospital. Basically, it covers all of King's work through the present day, with the exception of books like THE COLORADO KID, CELL, and the upcoming LISEY'S STORY, and a few short stories such as "The Things They Left Behind", which appeared in the 2005 anthology TRANSGRESSIONS.

Besides the inclusion of the new chapters, the book's been rearranged and revised in many ways, mostly to correct the factual errors and typos that crept up in the first edition. Hopefully, we caught most of the glitches in the new edition; the publishing gremlins that plague all books are a diligent bunch, however, so I expect folks will find some errors in this version as well.

If you should find an error or typo and would like to bring it to my attention, or would just like to discuss the book in general, please feel free to write me at HankW26159@aol.com. In the meantime, I hope you're intrigued enough to purchase the book.

Publishers Weekly called the original edition "An indispensable insider's guide to the influences on King, his plots and characters, TV and film adaptations and more..."

The Library Journal said that the SKU "...will appeal to serious King fans...[the STEPHEN KING UNIVERSE] will be an especially useful addition to academic resources on contemporary authors."

My favorite quote came from noted Stephen King scholar Stephen J. Spignesi: "THE STEPHEN KING UNIVERSE is as important a book as Douglas Winter's seminal STEPHEN KING: THE ART OF DARKNESS, which paved the way for the rest of us, we Chroniclers of the King. THE STEPHEN KING UNIVERSE is a major contribution to the field of scholarship about King, and King's fans should be grateful that Stan Wiater, Chris Golden, and Hank Wagner - a truly talented and insightful drawing of the three -- have done the kind of work it took to research and write THE STEPHEN KING UNIVERSE."

Enjoy.

Many fantasists or fantasy authors create their own parallel universes, which stand as back drops for their stories. H. P. Lovecraft did this with his Cthulhu Mythos, creating a pantheon of dark gods who have the ability to slip into our universe from time to time and sunder reality. Cthulhu's theme is to eradicate all humankind from the face of the earth.

Stephen King's parallel universe, however, appears to be a multitude of intertwining dimensions comprising malefic and beneficial cross-over characters and deities whose conflicts influence these various dimensions for good or for evil. According to authors Hank Wagner, Christopher Golden, and Stanley Wiater, in this, their definitive reference entitled THE COMPLETE STEPHEN KING UNIVERSE: A GUIDE TO THE WORLDS OF STEPHEN KING, Mr. King's DARK TOWER series stands as the central and unifying dimension from which his parallel universe emerges and ultimately returns. CSKU defines and describes all of Mr. King's stories and novels to date, tying events and people together in each of the over-lapping tales--but the fun does not stop there, readers. At the end of every chapter, the authors reveal interesting trivia about the characters and events that make-up Stephen King's world, sometimes pointing out that people in our so-called "reality" also have a share in his universe, the most obvious person being author Peter Straub, co-author of THE TALISMAN, one of my favorite novels of all time. (Speaking of Peter Straub, an interesting observation is the creepy character in his novel MR. X, who seems to make a brief appearance--at least in this reader's opinion--in Mr. King's novel FROM A BUICK 8, when he delivers the vintage Buick, then disappears behind the gas station where he abandons the car.)

If you are a fan of Stephen King's work, and the author himself, you will enjoy reading THE COMPLETE STEPHEN KING UNIVERSE. This fascinating and literate guide brought many details of Mr. King's overall work to my attention, details I was not aware of before reading CSKU, and has inspired me to read his stories and novels over again. (No mean feat, I would like to add; although a pleasurable one!) One of the more interesting pieces of information in THE COMPLETE STEPHEN KING UNIVERSE involved the accident in which a drunk driver struck and nearly killed Mr. King in 1999, while he was out jogging alongside a country road near his summer home in Maine--bizarre stuff, life imitating art.

THE COMPLETE STEPHEN KING UNIVERSE is highly recommended reading!

I just finished reading this book in one sitting. It seems as if you're in the same room as Anne & Michael Riley. He knows exactly what questions her fans want answered. It's refreshing to read Anne's own responses in their entirety without having a reporter interpreting her "meaning". I give this a "9" because the only thing that would have made it better would be if Anne had offered pictures of herself & environment.

This just isn't a biography of Ann Rice, it's as if she's telling you herself all the answers to questions we've all wanted to ask. This is her thoughts on her family, fans, characters, and herself. She shares her opinions freely and openly. I truly developed another view of this remarkable woman after reading this. Michael Riley had a good idea when he decided just to write this in interview form. That's exactly what everyone's been waiting for: 'Interview with Ann Rice'

A Must Read For Any Anne Rice Fan

Michael Riley takes the reader inside Anne Rice's worlds of reality and fiction through a series of extensive interviews. He's broken the text down into titled sections to emphasize the topic covered in each phase of the dialogue. Rice delves into where her characters and story ideas come from and just how much her life in New Orleans has influenced her work. It's interesting how the influences changed over time. First Lestat was her husband Stan and she was Louis but now she's more like Lestat than Stan. She discusses how her husband's poetry has had a great affect on her own work where certain lines will run through her head as she writes.

This is a good book for writers to read. Rice gives a lot of background on the movie biz and a view into the studio politics that occur when they purchase the rights to make a novel into a movie. The story behind the making of Interview With a Vampire is told in great detail. An interesting fact I learned was that when Hollywood buys the rights to a book any sequels that are written involving the same characters are contractually connected. Therefore the studio has the right to see them before any other studio can look at the books for potential development into movies. Rice also talks about rejection letters and how she dealt with them and provides in site into how the larger New York publishing houses operate. Highly recommended for fans and writers alike!

Why this books is so good??? Because Anne is allowed to talk. Everytime we see an interview with Rice, people dont let her talk. Michael is a close friend of Anne and they do this kind of talking all the time... If you are looking for motivations and in-depth talk of Anne Rice's books, this book is for you. After all, who better than Anne Rice and her friend to talk about her books??

In-depth and insightful

She broke the mold of bestselling authors with her tormented vampires and complex witch families, often set against the mossy, misty backdrops of her native New Orleans. Anne Rice is one of the few authors whose lives and opinions are as interesting as what they write, and Michael Riley offers more insight than virtually any other interviewer has done.

Michael Riley was a friend of Stan Rice's, and met Anne Rice at her wedding to Stan; he remained a pal after Anne shot to fame. Yet "I had rarely if ever seen an interview or profile that I thought did justice to her." So the two sat down and discussed many things about Rice: Her youth and her Catholic upbringing, about good and evil, New Orleans, California, her mold-breaking fiction, the immensely popular vampire Lestat, the handling of sex in her books, intellectual pretentions and elitism, the movie adaptation of "Interview With The Vampire," and what in her life inspired aspects of her books.

A less respectful reviewer probably would have descended leering or sneering, given that Rice's works include erotica, S&M fiction, and a Lolita-type novel. But Riley is professional, affectionate yet not gushing, and his questions have brains behind them. (Not the usual "what's your favorite food? Do you have any pets?") His respect for Rice is clear, and it makes the book especially interesting that he has genuine interest in what she says. But of course, the book hinges on Rice and what she has to say to Riley -- whether or not you agree with what she's saying, her warmth and humor are in clear evidence, and she's clearly thought through what she says.

It may not be necessary to know the author to enjoy his/her works, but it definitely can't hurt. Fans of Anne Rice will find this a must-read, and even casual readers of her books should give it a shot.

An excellent compilations of many of the short stories that did not make it into many of the mass market anthologies of recent years. Though yes, it also has a few of the old standbys like the Call of Cthulhu and At The Mountains of Madness. The small font and two-column layout means that there is a good deal more material in this book than the page count might tend to imply.

Perfect Compilation of Lovecraft's work.

If you are a fan of Lovecraft, or just yearn for the dark side of imagination, this is your book. For those new to Herbert Lovecraft's work, he is one of the pioneers of horror writing. During his short lifetime, Lovecraft created dark mythos out of which he carved his apocalyptic tales. CRAWLING CHAOS is compilation of his most important works along with some very intersting biological info.

This I am serious. This is just about the first Lovecraft book I ever got. If I were to go broke or die I will certainly not get rid of this one. In this book are all of Lovecrafts finest works. Though I must say to read them at first you will not understand quite fully, especially if for the first time reading Lovecraft. I recommend reading: The Loved Dead, The Hound, The Rats in the Walls and, Nyarlathotep.

King and Koontz don't stand-up to Lovecraft. This sampling ofhis definitive work, "The Cthulhu Mythos" as well as other stories, shows pure, definitive horror, twisted and convulsed beautifully. A definite must for the horror fan, filled with dark Gothic delights and terror.

I regard this novel as the best Spooksville i have read. I greatly recommend it. I was touched by Adam's love for Olos and Cindy and Bryce's relationship and the gang's bravery and sympathy for all the races like the Piths. Although it seems a bit of nonsense when you read the back of the book, it is indeed greatly complicated and interesting and nothing is as it seems. I nearly wept in the end.

It is a good book and it has a lot of action

The 4th graders in my classroom love the Spooksville series by Christopher Pike. They are all written at a 4th grade reading level. The series is more mature and more realistic than the Goosesbumps they all read in 3rd grade the kids tell me. There are waiting lists for certain Spooksville books and the Creepy Creature is always checked out. This book was a replacement for a lost copy due to many requests that I find a new one by the kids.

Scary!
