Lisa was a really good cop, a quick and accurate shooter. So, it was a real surprise when she was found dead along her regular jogging path with her gun still holstered and with the safety still on. The other surprise was that she was found twenty feet up, stuck in the V of a tree branch. Of great import to this case is the rarity of the combined occurrence of a full moon on a Friday the 13th. The story takes place during the five days leading up to Friday, October 13, 2000, when it is believed that the killer will attain his greatest level of power during the upcoming full moon.
Meanwhile, Chase and Skizzy are also working on a case involving weapons thefts from a local police station. Skizzy's invention of the "Mick," a mechanical spider-shaped surveillance camera, provides much of the intrigue in this subplot, which otherwise feels much like another day on the job.
Things really take a turn in Full Moon Bloody Moon when it is discovered that the killer can communicate with Sara through the telepathy that, until then, the reader had thought that only she and Chase could share. Is the killer a shapeshifter, too? Chase's ability to overhear their conversations causes his pragmatic worldview to begin to crumble. Able to accept Sara as a shapeshifter, because that was how he discovered her, the idea that there are more is almost too much for him. And the closer he comes to a solution, the more it seems that the killer is something that Chase is not entirely prepared to deal with.
The sexual tension between Sara and Chase continues building, with their friends invariably making comments to Chase about questionable situations. These are still some of the most intriguing characters in fiction, and any male reader is undoubtedly going to want to be Chase and want to be with Sara. Their relationship is an engaging combination of sibling and romance that succeeds because of not engendering any untoward feelings whatsoever. I'm becoming as comfortable with these people in just two books as I did Ed McBain's 87th Precinct crowd. I can only hope that Lee Driver exhibits McBain's longevity. Add to that her skill at writing epilogues that make me want to begin the next book immediately (in this case, The Unseen), and what we have is a terrific fantasy mystery series that deserves bestseller status.
YOU WILL LOVE THIS ONEReview Date: 2001-03-04
Chase Dagger is back, but this time he will need more than luck to catch a killer that has been around for more than 200 years.... Knowing that Oct. 13th a Friday was not even here yet, the worse was yet to happen.
FULL MOON BLOODY MOON has the same unconventional and fetching characters as THE GOOD DIE TWICE. Einstein the bright red macaw that has a big mouth, Chase's right hand woman, Sara, Simon the mailman who knows everybody's business. Padre and Skizzy are also back as well as some new characters. FULL MOON BLOODY MOON is a ferocious horror-filled ride that will stick with you well after you have finished reading the book. Mixed with sex, violence and plenty of fast paced action. I hung onto every word.
Lee Driver (aka S.D. Tooley ) you have done it again, keep up the good work.

Great Military Sci-Fi - Just Do It!Review Date: 2008-02-19
The FoundingReview Date: 2008-01-07
FIRST AND ONLY
--------------
The first book in the Ghost's series, it tells the story of the Ghost's fight against an army of heretical troops. But along with the enemy facing them across the trenches, the Ghost's face an even greater threat: an ignorant military leader who is more than willing to throw troops to the meat grinder that is this war.
GHOSTMAKER
----------
A sequel-prequel-connector story, Ghostmaker works to tie the reader in to the story of the Ghost's current position. Fighting on a forest world against a dug in enemy, some Ghosts remember life before this fight. A collection of short fights and battles, along with some non combat situations, really flesh out who the Ghosts are. Whether they're fighting in city streets, dropping into Normandy-like beach fights, or just gambling with a group of rowdy soldiers, the Ghost's really start to grow on you.
NECROPOLIS
----------
Necropolis is the first of what I call "epic" fights in the Ghost's series. The Ghosts have been sent to stop a civil war between two giant industrial cities. The city is easy to defend, but treachery and back stabbing among bring down its shields and walls. The Ghost's fight enemies on all sides, and when the hour is dark, heroes will rise, and the fate of the city will be decided.
Great Book for any Sci-Fi Fan!Review Date: 2008-01-02
The characters are the best part of the books, they are not archetype characters that are either purely good or completely evil. The characters have depths and shades of gray.
Overall I would say this book is a great read, and I highly reccomend the other works by Dan Abnett.

Bottom line: if you like Ed Lee, Herschel Gordon Lewis, MST3K, Jack Ketchum, the Evil Dead series, Dave Barry, or the flicks Peter Jackson made prior to Heavenly Creatures, then you'll love this book. It's dark fiction by a guy who appreciates and understands the genre.
I really dug it.
Funny and scary in equal measureReview Date: 2006-08-29
What happens with the key search sends Andrew off on another unexpected investigation as he and his best friend, Roger, try to find out who was really behind everything. Their search takes them to the home-made horror film experts at Ghoulish Delights and puts Andrew squarely in the clutches of The Apparition in his search for "the killer."
This is no ordinary killer, but one who has a maliciously creative streak, leaving mysterious presents on the hood of Andrew's car, and sending Andrew all over town on a scavenger hunt, with each clue telling him what to do next. Meanwhile, Andrew (who tries to be a good husband and father in spite of his ineptitude at most other things), is also trying to take care of his two children while his wife recovers from a broken leg in the hospital. Could life get any more difficult for a guy who's just trying to make ends meet without having to get a real job?
Author Jeff Strand is perhaps best known for his skill at balancing humorous and horrific elements in one tale (although his novel Pressure, with its high-intensity mainstream-thriller plot and characters, may change that for good if it gets the audience it deserves). Graverobbers Wanted (No Experience Necessary) is part of the reason for that reputation, and it showcases his rare talent wonderfully. [For more examples of his peculiar ability, also look for the short-story chapbooks Two Twisted Nuts (with Nick Cato) and Socially Awkward Moments with an Aspiring Lunatic.]
Graverobbers Wanted (No Experience Necessary) is a pure joy of a novel. I finished it in a day and a half. Although Andrew has little confidence in his own abilities ("I suck as a detective" is his mantra), he has a terrific sense of humor about it all. The consistent thread of sarcasm is what carried me so quickly through the book's 200 pages. Every character seems to be a smartass, Andrew's daughter Theresa perhaps most of all.
There is a chuckle on every page of Graverobbers Wanted (No Experience Necessary), even the pages that will turn your stomach with their gruesome descriptions, making Strand the Terry Pratchett of horror (call it "humorror" -- or don't). Strand is not only funny but obviously very intelligent. (How intelligent? He even manages to slip in a sideways reference to his children's book, Elrod McBugle on the Loose. How's that for cross-merchandising in narrative form?)
I loved every page of Graverobbers Wanted (No Experience Necessary). I was always surprised by the plot's twists and turns, could never predict where Strand's narrative was going to take me next, and was a willing participant the whole way. (Just to let you know what kind of sick freak I am, my favorite part was the puppet show.) I assumed that the momentum would eventually die out, but was pleasantly surprised that it never did; Even when things got a little on the improbable side near the end, it was all just part of the fun. In fact, there was enough leftover momentum to carry me right to the bookshelf and the second novel in the series, Single White Psychopath Seeks Same.

Great story with an exciting climax!Review Date: 2002-11-06
The descriptive by the author is so real that at every little sound in your home may cause you to look over your shoulder. Darius Creed is the Vampire hunter, who with his Love Selena hunts down and kills vampires. I really do not want to say more, because words alone cannot give you the impact that reading this book will.
For those that love fantasy with a mixture of horror, then this is your kind of book. The Gypsies, witches and vampires are intermingled with each other so well that you can hardly wait to turn to the next page. The use of the cat was unique. I loved it.
This book proves once again that good overcomes evil - or does it? I am not a fantasy or horror fan, but this book by Mr. Haeuser grabbed me and held me to the exciting climax. If you want a book that will leave you in a cold sweat, then be sure to get your copy of 'Hunters of the Shadows.'
What a movie this would make. Bravo!

An Awesome Vampire story!!Review Date: 2002-12-06
Good vampire storyReview Date: 2002-11-11
Darius Creed is a Hunter, a special breed of human charged with the protection of all humans from the darkness lurking everywhere. He is long-lived and comes from a long line of Gypsy Royalty.
In modern times, most humans have forgotten the old lore, how to protect themselves against the darkness, all those except the Gypsy people who follow the old ways. Hunters in modern times are hard to come by, but they are needed, for a great battle is about to commence and only the Hunters can stop the powers of Darkness from attempting the Dolmage - Armageddon...
This book had a bit of everything, romance, adventure, mystery, horror, action, it was a difficult book to put down. As I was about half way through, I was thinking to myself, "I wish Selena (Creed's lover) was more involved in the story," and shortly thereafter, my wish was granted, although not in the way I expected! Selena is pivotal to the plot, even though she is not involved so much in the action.
My one niggle, and it is a niggle, although the story more than makes up for it, is that the layout of the book was a little odd. There were no spaces or indents between paragraphs. I'm not sure if that's the way the author meant it to be, or if it was a mistake at the printers.
Even with that, it's a good book and an interesting read if you like vampire stories with a bit of magic and romance thrown in.

Not your average sexy story with sexy vamps.Review Date: 2008-05-19
This is a vampire story that gives the reader a new and refreshing look at this genre. Here we have three vamps...all sexy or course and each with their own story of how they came to be. Excellent backstory of Edward and loved the sexy Terrence with the body of David; and the glue that holds 'their little family unit' together Maria.
Well developed characters took the reader into the heart and soul of each vampire in a way that enriched the story.
Of course, we must have a human factor incorporated in the mix in order to have our conflicts, heartache and personal angst.
Enjoyed the writing of Rick Reed and have order another book of his. IM
A new voice on an old topicReview Date: 2007-10-20
Elise, an artist by day and an prostitute by night, meet up with a small family of vampires in modern Chicago. Terance, Edward, and Maria each want her for a different reason -- Terance as prey, Edward as a tool for salvation, and Maria as an eternal love. The story follows Elise through her involvement with these vampires until she finally forced to decide what she wants for the rest of her life and how much she would be willing to sacrifice for eternal youth. Through Elise's musings and decisions, we also see Edward's choices parallelled and how they affected his future.
Reed's vampires go beyond the stereotypical vampire-lover we see in so many novels. These vampires are very much hunters, but there is a lingering humanity about Maria and Edward that makes the reader sympathetic to them. Even in Terance's seeming absence of compassion or empathy, we see a vulnerability in him that is scarily attractive. These vampires share the same frailties and vulnerabilities that we usually only see in their mortal prey. In giving them a level of humanity, Reed makes the reader care about these vampires and see them with a depth and clarity that is missing in other novels of this genre.
Reed's writing is poetic yet graphically clear. He doesn't try to win the reader's sympathy by showing the vampire kills as romantic encounters of seduction. Terance, Edward, and Maria are preditors. We never forget that fact. However, we see in these preditors remnants of their lost humanity and it makes us feel for them.
The weaving of Elise's story and Edward's story is a wonderful exploration of the question "What would you give to be immortal?" Too often, this question is overlooked in vampire stories, yet it is the essential question to Reed's work. It explores not only the human condition but the artist's condition as well. The parallelling between the stories gives added depth to both characters and makes the reader see how one choice can change one's life forever.
Reed's novel is a fresh take on an old story. His style is straight-forward and concise. His descriptions are gritty and realistic -- there is no sugar-coating of the truth in this novel. There are some depictions of sexual situations, both heterosexual and homosexual, but they are done tastefully and are in no was gratuitous or just a ploy to sell more books.
In the Blood is a vampire story with a twist. It catches the reader from the first chapter and doesn't let go. It is a fast read that not only thrills us but also makes us think not only about the choices the characters make but also about the choices we would make in the same situation.
In The BloodReview Date: 2007-10-16
What would you give for love? What price are you willing to pay? These are the themes explored in this tale other worldly.
Meet Terence, as beautifully chiseled as Michaelangelos' David, and colder than marble, Edward, once an artist, who paid the price for love and immortality and now walks a sad melancholy "life" and Maria, centuries old and stunningly beautiful with dark, dark, liquid eyes that draw you into a sensuous pleasure from which you may never emerge.
Elise Groneman lives a beyond bleak, loveless, netherworld existence of her own, drawing and painting grim scenes of murder and accident victims by day and selling herself by night, a nightmare existence but nothing compared to the waking nightmare she will encounter.
In The Blood seems a perfect read at this time of the year, Halloween, All Souls Day, the Day of the Dead while the earth is preparing to take its' winter slumber. It takes you into a dark and sensuous world of pleasure that is punctuated with bloody graphic scenes, not for the squeamish. Like most works of fiction it does require you to suspend your disbelief, sometimes stretching that requirement with respect to some of the actions of Elise, who finds herself falling under Marias' spell.
Rick Reed has written several books of the horror genre. In the Blood is a full working of a short story that appears in his Twisted: Tales of Obsession and Terror.
An intense brutal vampire storyReview Date: 2007-10-02
Elise, once a good Jewish girl from Ohio, is now an artist by day and a hooker by night. She has to prostitute herself to make ends meet. Creating her art is her passion, however, because it reveals so much of the darkness in her soul, she is not able to share this much of herself with the world, so she is not marketing her work. Elise's lifestyle connects her with the scum of the earth. She frequently finds herself in danger. She despairs over this; however, she is unwilling to dig herself out.
When she encounters sexy, enigmatic Terrence, she is intrigued. She does not know that he is a vampire. He introduces her to Maria and Edward. Maria falls in love with her. Terence feels jealous. Edward's story is told alongside Elise's. He was also an artist before Terence turned him in 1954. Edward lost so much of himself when he was turned, he regrets that it happened. He does not want Elise to make the same mistake. When Elise finds out what they are, she is intrigued and scared. The vampire trio commits brutal attacks on their victims.
As Elise is sucked into their world, she finds a great deal of inspiration for her dark art. Maria tries to talk her into joining them with their immortality. Terence and Edward do not want this. Edward warns her about what it will be like to spend eternity having sacrificed her talent. Elise life becomes endangered when she regrets them. She has to find a way out.
"In the Blood," is a gripping, brutal vampire tale. The author, Rick R. Reed does an incredible job of painting the story with his words. You feel like you are watching everything instead of reading the words. The vampires are dark and brutal. In spite of their innate sensuality, they do not have very many redeeming qualities. Edward is truly a tortured artist. He was literally suckered into being a vampire by his feelings for Terrence. He has to spend eternity regretting his decision. As you read the story, you hope that Elise will hang on to her humanity and try to find a way out. You don't want her to go back to her old life; you want her to grow from what she has learned and move on. This is an excellent story for vampire fans. Be prepared to squirm in your seat at the brutality of these creatures.
The Eternal Dance Of Good Vs. Bad Never Gets OldReview Date: 2007-09-11
Elise Groneman, artist by day and hooker by night, bemoans the tepid routine of her everyday life. Surrounded by the residue of urban dilapidation, she longs for something more, something real, something lasting - anything that can take her away from the dregs of her muted existence. A chance pick-up one night of what appears to be a random John finally makes all that possible - but in ways she can't even imagine.
She soon finds herself slowly becoming more acquainted with the likes of Terence, Edward, and Maria, ultimately discovering the truth of their existence as vampires. Rather than kill her, as is their wont to do, the trio - at Maria's behest - attempts to ingratiate Elise into joining their inner circle, roaming with them throughout all eternity. Maria's reasons? Purely selfish: she has fallen deeply in love with Elise and refuses to dispatch her beautiful soul to the nether regions.
This decision, of course, infuriates Terence; in his opinion, she knows too much about their true nature, and her indecision regarding joining their circle makes her a threat to their long-term security. He insists upon destroying her for once and for all and stops at nothing to make it happen, putting him at odds with his two compatriots.
Blinded by his rage, though, Terence doesn't realize that there are more important things in life than the maintenance of proper order, and the end result of his actions leaves him wishing he had learned that lesson quite a bit sooner.
Rick Reed's endearing tale is a unique, fresh retelling of the power of true love. One would not think that such a task would be possible through the machinations of cold-blooded vampires, but Reed does an admirable job of tugging at the heartstrings nonetheless. His testament to the insuperability of the spirit is inspiring, regardless of the medium he employs.
In The Blood may not be action-packed or intricately layered - but it doesn't need to be. It is a straight-ahead tale of the eternal dance between forces of nature at their worst and best, one that readers of all types will surely appreciate.

This story roped me right in, from the first page of the prologue. The description of the time-frame of 1900, transported me there immediately. I could close my eyes and see the dwelling in which the Ritual was taking place and then gracelessly interupted.
Soon I was traveling back to present day in the first chapter. I saw things in each character I could identify with. The main character in the story is (other than the Mirror) Storm. Poor man seems almost lonely, except for his co-workers and his assistant, Nannette. The exchanges between Storm and Nannette, made me laugh out loud! I believed that Storm's existance was work, and commute, home and sleep. No socializing, he didn't seem to have time. I could feel his depression seeping thru the pages. The shock of finding out about Lila's passing, and then learning of all she left him, pushes Storm to delve into his family's history and secrets in a small Western MD town, where he meets some people that become very important in his life. Vanessa Archer is one of these such people, the kind of person we all would like to have as a friend. The more he learned, the more questions arose. Who are these ghosts, what do they want?
I had to make myself put the book down, so I could function in my daily life, or to sleep. The closer to finishing the book I got, the harder it was to put down.
I am so very ready for the next book, and June 2007 can't get here fast enough!
Witty and macabre!Review Date: 2006-08-26
I quickly felt familiar with the characters, and I enjoyed how the clues and mysteries of the plot were peculiar enough to leave me wondering. By the end, I only thought that I'd had it figured out...
Nevertheless, as the first book that I've been able to finish reading in over five years vs. novels written by Dean Koontz and Clive Barker; I'd reccommend "Into the Mirror Black" to reading enthusiasts, but to those of us who aren't as avid as we might have once been.
I'm looking forward to the next piece by this author!

It is full of suspense and chilling happening on every page. I just couldn't wait to turn the pages. The mad scientist and all his evil doing to stay young, the love interests, the innocent sacrifices that had to be made in order to live on in this life. I could go on and on but pick up the book and I promise you, you won't be disppointed in this thrilling, so well written medical thriller. Eagerly awaiting REPLICA!!!!!!!! Keep them coming Bill - I believe Bill will be our number 1 "Medical Thriller" writer if he keeps this up. He's well on his way!!!!!!!
