This two-piano version has been corrected and updated to reflect the original Gershwin "chamber" version, which is now commonly available for full orchestra. If you are listening to recordings, it is the version used by James Levine in his recording with the Chicago Symphony, as opposed to the old classic Bernstein/NY Phil. A great buy for the price, very accurate and easy to read, with a helpful analysis of the work at the beginning.

This is a great edition of this great piece of music. It one of the only full and true editions for the piano. It's a challenge that's for sure. But I'm very happy about my purchase.

Overall excellent. Deviates in some areas from traditional orchestral renditions -- leaves out a few minor portions and adds in others. Some sections very difficult (e.g. apparently carry-overs from 4-hand/2 piano version). But a great work nonetheless.

Simply said, I am using this as the feature of my senior piano performace recital at my college. This brilliant work is something to behold in its concerto form, something to enjoy it its orchestral form, and something that every one should study in its piano solo form.

Gershwin himself wrote this arrangement, so it can be safe to assume that everything in this piece is exactly how Gerswhin wanted it. I would imagine he would best realize what he original thought to be the important parts...

If you are looking for a great collection of classic rock songs, this is it. It includes both tab and music and great performance notes to get many of the nuances from the original performers. Many of the songs are very easy to play and you can ramp up the complexity as your playing improves. We used this book to round a out a playlist for a garage band and loved the song selection and format. Just get it.

Rock Guitar Songs for Dummies is All Right Now

Review Date: 2007-11-22
This is a great book, even for non-dummies. It would be great if it included a CD, but perhaps that would have been cost prohibitive. If you can collect the albums that these songs are on, you will have a great and diverse rock album collection.

It might not have a CD, but what it does include is sheet music and tablature for 35 classic rock songs. You can learn a few basic chords and strum along, or get deeper into the licks, riffs, and solos. It also includes notes and tips for each song.

For instance, several songs require tuning down a half-step. Kiss, Van Halen, AC/DC, Jimi Hendrix, and even Carl Wilson of The Beach Boys favored this "rock tuning." To have this simple technique explained saved me from endless frustration, trying to pick up the songs by ear. Palm muting is another technique this helpful manual explains. And there are ample examples of "5" chords, that have a very big "rock" sound because they lack the third, and all notes are either roots or 5ths. If the theory and explanations go over the heads of any "dummies" they can just play it, and feel the rock and roll!!!!!

Wild Thing, by The Troggs, is a classic but simple song, and one of the easier ones to play--but there are just a few simple tricks, and this book clues you in on the secrets. Sweet Home Alabama and David Bowie's Rebel, Rebel from the Diamond Dogs album are other simple, yet brilliant, songs that are easy to play, once you unlock the secrets. All Right Now, by Free, from Fire and Water, is yet another example of a riff that sounds so cool, but is so easy to play once you see how.

Smoke on the Water, from Machine Head by Deep Purple? Yes, it's here. Brown Eyed Girl, by Van Morrison, from the groovily titled Blowin' Your Mind!? It's here, too. Walk This Way? Ditto. You got your Cream, your Z.Z. Top, your Police, your Rolling Stones, your Stray Cats, your Steppenwolf--you got your Bachman-Turner Overdrive II, too. So, Who's Next? With all the helpful tips, you Won't Get Fooled Again.

You don't even have to be a dummy to find this book useful...

Herriges gives you detailed descriptions on how to play 35 rock classics, from Cheap Trick to Van Halen. Symbols, technical help, notation definitions, a guitar notation legend, a chord chart, and TAB for every song! "Proud Mary," "Smoke on the Water," "Brown Eyed Girl," and "Hey, Joe." A previous knowledge of music notation and tab is helpful, but the references in the back will clear up any confusion.

A Good Resource For Guitarists

I wish that I could have seen just what songs this book had before I bought it. While the songs range from the 60's to the 80's in style, most of the songs aren't my favorite songs although I do like Walk Don't Run (the Ventures), Sunshine of Your Love (Cream), and Won't Be Fooled Again (the Who). The others I could live without.

However, over all this is a very good book to have around for intermediate to advanced guitar players. If you are a beginner I wouldn't quite recommend this book as most of the music is fairly advanced. This shouldn't come as a surprise as the music was written by accomplished rock musicians and played by accomplished rock musicians. The book tries to help by providing notes at the beginning of the book about many of the songs on the techniques involved and how these songs should be played but still, this is not a book for rank amateurs unless someone with more experience is around to help answer a few questions.

But given the short supply of rock music with both standard music notation and tablature, this book is a good resource for a few good songs to learn such as Hit Me With Your Best Shot, I want You To Want Me, Message In A Bottle, The Boys Are Back In Town, Shattered, Born To Be Wild, and others. Also, what would really help this book is a CD of the songs like those found in the Guitar For Dummies and Rock Guitar For Dummies books, but sadly, I guess for contractual reasons, no CD of the songs is offered here although there could be cover versions but we don't even get those. So for lack of a CD and the limited number of hot rock songs, I give this book only four stars.

A very good collection. A little disappointing not to see "Go, Lovely Rose" included and there are a couple of alarming misprints ("Now sleeps the crimson petal, NOT the white"). I wasn't a huge fan of the Finale typesetting either, but it's easy enough to read. It is great to see the best of Quilter's excellent songs assembled so conveniently and for such a low price. A must-have for the library of any serious young singer and probably a good purchase for a repiteteur or teacher.

Beautiful Collection of Classic English Repertoire
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2005-01-02
Roger Quilter is a minor figure in British music, but his art songs continue to be some of the most popular in the English repertoire. The music is indeed beautiful. Melodic, lush, dreamy, and heart-wrenching, these songs sound more like well-written popular love balads than the stodgy repertoire most young singers are exposed to. Given some time with these pieces, a young singer can devlop indefinate control, and ease of expression. This collection from Hal Leonard is incredibly well concieved. It is nice to look at for one thing. I'm actually surprized how usable the volume is. The music is beautifully rescribed - extremely readable size and beautiful figures. The print is in a lovely font, too. The paper much higher quality than most compilations of this nature. The binding is quite hardy. Some of the songs are available in keys you can't get anywhere else. The Low voice version is actually suitable for a medium-low voice, and the high voice version for a -medium high voice.

Hopefully this collection will be made more widely available (it currently is a bit difficult to track down a copy).

This is one of the best photographic books I have ever seen. The photographers who took these photos really captured the feeling and emotions of the artists at the time. All the classic and famous personalities of music are here, from Ike and Tina to Bob Dylan; from Elvis to Bowie to Nirvana; from The Beatles and Stones to Alice Cooper and all that lies between (too too many to list here). An excellent array of both black and white and colour shots. The close ups allow you to see into the sometimes troubled, sometimes happy, but ever changing eyes of these rock icons. The broader shots show some of these bands and performers in their most comfortable and bizarre surrounds. A worthwhile purchase, that allows you to ponder each and every photo for hours and hours. In the back is a complete copy (small version) of the photos together with a who is who. Buy the hardcover; not only is it worth the price, but it will last forever. This is easily the greatest and most comprehensive collection of rock and roll pictures in one publication!

I bought this a year or so ago, but I didn't think it necessary to make a review. However, after a year, I must say that this little book is a great reference and I keep it close on hand. I have referred to this book often and it has guided me in choosing some albums first and leaving others for last. It is hard to get very accurate opinions on any given album since everyone is different, and even Bob Dylan is not always reliable because it was he who threw away Blind Willie McTell and Foot of Pride which are both masterpieces. However, this little book is okay. Just yesterday I went back to it to look up more information on my lastest pick which was Oh Mercy! which I think of as a MASTERPIECE album, and sure enough the book stated that it was superbly atmospheric. That is absolutely correct, and furthermore, there was more information about the recording history and about the producer/guitarist who helped make this album so outstanding. I learned that Man in the Long Black Coat was written right there in the studio and executed in one take. I found that utterly amazing information that just blew me away. There is even a picture of Suzie and Bob together at the apartment and Suzie looks so utterly happy and in love (life changes fast) (you can see the sequence to this picture in Dylan: Visions, Portaits and Back Pages). So this book is as packed and informative as a little book can get and I do use it often. Yes I recommend it!

I bought this book at a bookstore recently after a brief look at it and was surprised at the awesome amount of researched material in it from song backgrounds, personal information, history and hard to find facts about his personal life and what influenced some of his songwriting etc. This frankly is the BEST one volume I have found on Bob Dylan, and I couldn't recommend it higher. I have been a Dylan fan since 1964.

Finally, a book on house music capturing the pop sensibilities of the MTV generation, the historical coverage of the New York Times and the song significance of dance music magazines. With a cover graced by none other than Armand Van Helden, HOUSE: The Rough Guide breaks down this musical subgenre in small easily digestible doses.

In keeping with the MTV mindset of short attention spans, HOUSE provides synopses highlighting the salient points of significant contributions DJ's (e.g. Masters at Work, DJ Pierre), producers (e.g. Mood II Swing, Basement Jaxx) and labels (e.g. Nervous, Salsoul) have made to House music. Very much like a NY Times investigative story, Bidder's Rough Guide leaves no stone unturned, reporting on names both past and present in the house music game from Robert Owens to Adeva to Daft Punk to Bobby Konders. The book serves as an excellent resource and reference for beginners to gain knowledge about the genre, for intermidiate house lovers to further their education and for advanced house users as a reference tool to key people.

One added bonus, the book not only covers the people and the labels, but it also names the tunes that catapulted to stardom.

Sorry: I'll write my appreciation in french.

Gary Stewart's book is so very well researched. If you are not familiar with the Congolese Rumba, the material will not really interest you and be difficult if not impossible to read. If you are familiar with this remarkable music in any way, you will end up seeking out and acquiring as much of this music and record titles as you can afford. I must have bought about 150 CD titles of the artists mentioned in the book.Stewart's book puts these artists and their music in the context of a history previously unwritten about in the English language. The only other book that comes to mind is Graeme Ewens' "Congo Colossus", but that title is more confined to the history of Franco (Francois Luambo Makiadi) and Le T.P. OK Jazz.If there is a criticism, it is a small one. He leaves out Orchestra Super Mazemba and Samba Mapangala. Although those artists made their mark in Kenya, they were in fact major Rumba artists from the Congo. However, Mr. Stewart performed remarkable research not to mention a history book that moves like an impossible to put down novel.

In my search for Motorcycle Fiction, I found this book and decided to give it a shot. I liked it. It's not written by the Bikers that I run around with, but it is a good story. The concept of having a global breakdown intrigues me. Most Bikers would go for the Freedom of self controll; deciding their own destiny, so I can understand the plight JC had when he decided to make his run for the New Society. I found this story to hold some of the truths of the Biker Culture and I think most people would enjoy the read. I don't know if I would have written it in 2011; that's only three years away. Maybe JC does know something we don't.

A fun book to read

I met the author, talked bikes, then I bought his book. I had been reading non-fiction books and this book was a breath of fresh air. It was fun to read and I looked forward to finding out how the plot ended.

I have just finished reading A Run Up The Coast by G.W.Lewis.
I could not put the book down. I have never been on a motorcycle, but found that this is a book for everyone, and my thoughts were, "this should be a movie". Mr. Lewis has indicated this book is the first of a trilogy, and I can't wait to read the next sequel.

I immediately recommended the book to my family and friends.

What an adventure. This is a book you pick up and don't put down till the last page, and when you close it, the only word is "WOW!" Thanks for the memories and putting them all together.
