I stumbled across this book about 6 years ago in a sales rack at Crown Books in Topanga Canyon, California. There were only three left, so I picked one up and paid about $11 for it. How I wish I had snatched all three, because it is now impossible to get and some dealers are asking a fortune for used versions (Ron offers the best price and his are new!). One of a kind posters, many that are different versions from the same film and sometimes foreign versions, are artfully arranged and beautifully reprinted throughout this book. The reader can enjoy the fabulous art again and again, as well as learn quite a bit about the history of film posters, lobby cards and one sheets. Ron's narrative about his love for collecting posters is a treat and he paints a great picture with words of what it was like when he and his friends started out collecting. I urge you to visit Ron's shop on Hollywood Blvd. for a look at some truly classic film posters if you just can't seem to find this great book. What can I say but, "Five Thumbs Up!" (And thanks, Ron, for sharing!)

It's kind of sad that the lack of reviews here makes it look like no one has looked at this funny book on this site since 1998. It's very funny and just the kind of book a young boy would make any adult read to him over and over. And girls will like it too.

If you had put your hand over my eyes and read the first paragraph of the first story to me, with main characters Alpha, Oliver and Omega, I would have known who wrote it right away. It has Mahy's rhythm, her humor that comes from the sound of the words, the alliteration she loves. This is a book made to be read aloud. It sounds funny, and it means funny too. The plot of these two stories twist in ways that, even having read a lot of Mahy, I never could have predicted. Everytime I encounter one of her stories, I wonder how that kind of twist came to her. I wish I could do it myself.

The first story is about three boys who have recently moved into a house. In the apartment, whenever the boys tried to do something adventuresome, they were told to wait until they were in a big house. Then they'd have space enough to have an adventure. Well, they were in the new house, and nothing was happening... until a pirate decides their house is the perfect place to "steal" a party.

In the second story, a bunch of atypical robbers kidnap an orphaned librarian reasoning that her "parents" would be the city, and they would have to come up with ransom in order to open the library again. But of course, the librarian always wins. Mahy was herself a librarian for many years.

Perfect read-aloud book. Lots of fun. And the illustrations are an extra (goofy) plus. They are done by Quentin Blake, the illustrator who worked on Roald Dahl's books, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, BFG, The Witches etc. You'll recognize his style when you see it.

This is how I learned to play guitar...

Seriously, if you want to learn how to play rock music, buy these books (volume 1 and 2) and practice learning the rhythms and leads and solos. It's challenging stuff for sure, but there's a wide variety of styles and such. I recommend learning all of Patience to start, then move on to harder songs. I learned so much from learning songs and parts of songs from this by striving to play it note for note. Theres a ton of guitar playing on all these songs so it should keep you occupied for a long time.

If your advanced and just want to learn GNR songs then its just as good. Everything is easy to read, the print size etc. is perfect and everything is accurate as far as I can tell. Get both of these books and you have the blueprints for learning to play rock music.

Slash is definately my favorite guitarist and to me there's none better when it comes to playing with heart and soul and technique to match. If youre serious about self teaching yourself rock guitar definately give these books a try, it will be very rewarding.

Includes songs like Break Down, Civil War, Don't Cry, Knocking on Heaven's door and more - just fun to play. A must have for all those who play the guitar or Guns n roses fans. Don't forget to buy volume 2. Doesn't have the songs from: 'The Spaghetti Incident?' though, maybe it's better this way because that album wasn't too good.

I love how every single song is in this two book set (Complete I and Complete II). It's very thorough and it has every signal note from every Slash solo. But, it is a bit advanced (for me too) and a lot of it is pretty complex. Good thick tab book though.

First of all, the book is both moving and laugh-out loud hysterical. Three of the writers were featured before a poetry slam here in Phoenix and the sample poetry and stories they presented to the audience were unbelivable; the entire room was both captivated and amused. That was just a small sample; the book itself is even better.

I found this book via the LA Times Bestseller list in December, and gave it to a few of my friends as holiday gifts. They have all raved about this book, and have found it to be "inspirational", to say the least! The caliber of writing is quite outstanding, leading me to believe that the title was perhaps a bit misleading. There's a bit of something in this anthology to appeal to everyone's sexual taste. I've even learned a few new tricks to add to my roster of activities!

This is a very impressive collection of practically everything written by Hank Williams, and exactly what I needed (with chord diagrams). My only complaint is that there are Hank classics not written by him that are not included in this anthology; such as, "Lovesick Blues", "Settin' The Woods on Fire", and "Half As Much". It also doesn't include Hank's "(I Heard That) Lonesome Whistle". But it seems EVERYTHING else is here - and it's wonderful this music book was released! (Five Stars if the mentioned songs were included!)

i was really into einstuerzende neubauten for years--and this collection gives the original german lyrics, as well as some decent (but not perfect) english translations, of their lyrics up to the mid-1990s. i would say the main flaw in this book is the serial interview with blixa bargeld--it's not very insightful. still, this is a must-have for diehard EN fans. too bad their recent work is so terrible!

If you are an EN fan or just want to understand the songs without translating them from the German yourself, you need this book. It doesn't include the most recent songs but the more recent CD's include translations anyway. It also has some interesting insights from Blixa regarding the music and the growth of the band's ideas.

If you are a fan you need to become a supporter. Checkout www.neubauten.org for information.

Headcleaner contains nearly all of Bargeld's lyrics, an interesting interview by Harry Lachner, partial discography, "net of tracks," and a nifty glow-in-the-dark cover. Aside from the lyrics themselves, possibly the most interesting thing in the book is the "net of tracks," which looks rather like a subway map, charting Bargeld's songs. The lyrics themselves, while enhanced by Neubauten's music, stand alone quite well. One can't help but see the threads of mind/body dissonance, destruction, passion, irony and lonely existenialism at the heart of his work. It's quite beautiful.

This is a great introduction to Jazz History for anyone just becoming interested in the subject. Anyone who has been into jazz for some time who hasn't read "Hear Me Talkin' To Ya" yet is missing a real treat. This is full of facinating information, and is a great read.

The book is wonderfull and colorfull look at the origins and development of jazz music from New Orleans at the start of the 1900s to the start of BeBop in New York mid-century. As the full title states, this is "The Story of Jazz As Told By The Men [and Women] who Made It". This is a compilation of excerpts from interviews, letters, autobiographies, and articles with jazz musicians, both greats and less well known musicians who have good stories to tell. Louis Armstrong, Bunk Johnson, Sidney Bechet, Danny Barker, Hoagy Carmichael, Jelly Roll Morton, Mary Lou Williams, Benny Goodman, Coleman Hawkins, Milt Hinton, Charlie Parker, Dave Brubeck, and many others have their say.

Highly recomended!

I first read this book at The University of Michigan over twenty years ago, and gave my copy away to a friend over 15 years ago, who...to my surprise (!)...was married to a drummer for a very famous Jazz musician mention in this book!,...and I now just ordered a copy for my library...and to read over... and over again....

Excellent "quotes" from some of the most influential players in original American music history!!!

A 'must have' for anyone seriously interested in the origins of Jazz, it roots, it's movement up the Missippi to Chicago...And it's told from the people who not only played it...but also lived it!

If you finished reading this review, then this book is probably for you!!!

A very good reed!

Heroines: The Lives Of Great Literary Characters And What They Have To Teach Us by Mary Riso offers a close and articulate reading of great heroines from literary classics, including Natasha in "War And Peace"; Jane in "Jane Eyre"; Mary in "The Secret Garden"; Lucie in "A Tale Of Two Cities"; and others. Recommended as a vivid, erudite, and exquisitely presented literary study, Heroines is a welcome addition to Women's Studies and Literary Studies supplemental reading lists.

Riso does an excellent job of summarizing the plots of several classic books and delineating the characters of the heroines therein. She shows that classic literature is not just meant to be read in order to write a paper for school or for our own reading pleasure; literature can also introduce us to heroines who can teach us many valuable lessons about life. Although the circumstances of our modern lives differ in many ways from theirs, we can still learn to be cheerfully courageous in the face of difficult circumstances, like Elizabeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice, or to encourage others to live more sacrificial lives, like Lucie in Tale of Two Cities. Our circumstances may be different but the qualities needed to confront modern life are the same as the character qualities needed 100 or 200 years ago.

More than literary characters

At first glance, this book may seem to focus on the literary characters mentioned. On reading however, it quickly becomes clear that the author's focus is the virtues which make up a godly character in anyone. The literary characters are a clever way to illustrate the author's point, using someone every reader knows or may know.

Very insightful and inspiring!

For some Christians, though this idea is less dominant lately, the Bible is the one book they need to read. However, many of us do read other books, and there are things to learn from them that mirror Biblical truths.

***** Mary Riso explores this in her book, HEROINES. Using characters familiar to those students of classic literature, such as CS Lewis, the Brontes, the SECRET GARDEN, and some less familiar, she draws out the morals to be learned from the women featured in these novels. Many of these books are ones that have been regulated to childhood, but though unstated, she makes the point that Jesus made, that we are to come as children, thus, reading from "children's " literature might help us to do this. This is not a book for "chicks" alone, but also for men, for anyone who wants to discover the treasures to be found on dusty library shelves. *****

Around the time Hitler invaded Russia, the Fuerher's right hand man, Martin Borman, came to a disquieting conclusion. Germany was going to lose the war. Borman didn't give a fig about what happened to Germany, but he cared very deeply about what would happen to Martin Borman. Therefore Borman embarks on a complicated, ingenius, and deadly plan to get himself and a considerable amount of wealth out of the Third Reich before the allies obliterate it. Hitler's Judas is the second in a trilogy about North Carolina's Pea Island, the first being Sunday's Child

It's when Adolph Hitler decided to invade the behemoth that was the Soviet Union that his trusted subordinated, Martin Bormann, knew that the Nazi's vaunted Third Reich was doomed to failure and defeat. That's when Bormann carefully laid his own plans to escape the looming disaster -- and taken an enormous amount of wealth with him to finance an opulent live style for the rest of his life. When the time came, Bormann smuggled both himself and 50 million in gold -- looted by the Nazi's from across the map of Europe. But instead of fleeing to sanctuary in Argentina as so many of his far-sighted colleagues did, Bormann wound up on Pea Island, an isolated strip of sand north of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. In "Hitler's Judas", novelist Tom Lewis has written a plausible novel of suspense, lacing it with historical detail and an inherently fascinating cast of memorable characters and capping it off with a compelling ending. An appropriate acquisition selection for community library fiction collections, "Hitler's Judas" is deftly written, consistently satisfying and highly recommended reading.

I decided to review this book based on the title alone, because I am a fan of history and enjoy historical fiction. I don't know nearly enough about WWII, but I do have a rudimentary understanding of why the war happened, what everyone's goals were and what the outcome was.

I found this book fascinating because it delves into the personal life of Martin Bormann, personal secretary to Adolf Hitler. It also tells the story of Horst von Hellenbach, Germany's celebrated U-Boat Captain. Throughout most of the book, we alternate chapter for chapter between the two characters and their part in fighting Hitler's war.

As we advance through the story, we discover that Martin Bormann is scheming his way out of the Third Reich. We learn that he does not really support Hitler and Hitler's ideals; he is merely an opportunist who seized onto the idea that would afford him the most comfortable lifestyle possible for the age. Bormann is a genius though and he knows that the Third Reich will soon be coming to a disastrous close. With this knowledge in mind, he begins formulating a plan that will allow him to escape Germany and the Third Reich undetected so that he may live out the rest of his life comfortably. His plans include stealing 50 million in Nazi gold, which he plans to take to the coast of the United States where he hopes to live on what he believes to be a deserted island.

Throughout the book, we wonder when the stories of Martin Bormann and Horst von Hellenbach will collide as they both move so erratically. We discover the answer near the climax of the book and come to a conclusion that no one could have predicted while reading the book.

After reading the conclusion, I understand more how this book fits into the Pea Island Gold Trilogy and am intent on seeking out the first book, "Sunday's Child," so that I may learn more about that story and exactly what impact this story has on that as they seem fairly unrelated as related as I know they are.

In summary, I found this book to be well-written, fascinating and for the most part, historically accurate. I certainly left with far more knowledge of the inner workings of the Third Reich and World War II. It was an excellent read and I highly recommend "Hitler's Judas" to anyone who is interested in historical fiction or suspense.

This is like a photo scrapbook of the band. There is writing too, but the full color pictures are the reason to buy the book. It's split into 4 sections:
1- TEENAGE WHORE
2- RETARD GIRL
3- PRETTY ON THE INSIDE
4- MISS WORLD
Also includes a discography up to 1995. Great little book for a cheap price.

This book has some really great pictures of Courtney and Hole but the only problem is a lot of the information about her and/or the band is wrong. For example it says that Courtney, and her friends Robin and Christine formed a band called the Italian Whore Nuns. This is incorrect, since none of these people were in the Italian Whore Nuns. The Italian Whore Nuns was a band that the remaining Pagan Babies members (a band Courtney formed with Kat Bjelland) formed after Courtney left the Pagan Babies. I also noticed that above one of the pictures of the original Hole lineup, the author accidently mixed up Jill Emery and Caroline Rue in the caption. Other than these mistakes the book is great, but I would recommend buying it just for the pictures and pretty much ignore the text.

Great Buy..i'm glad I got this one
