Kate Walker is back and at it again, sweeping readers off their feet with her newest romance, The Sicilian's Wife. This is a romance so full of [physical] tension that every time Megan and Cesare are within site of each other it crackles with electrical sparks that make it feel like the book is ready to explode right in your hands. The Sicilian's Wife is a superb example of the enchanting romances and captivating characters that are a staple to be found in all Kate Walker romance books. To be sure, it is some of the most entertaining and highly sensual reading the Harlequin Presents line has seen in a long time. The Sicilian's Wife has already become one of my favorite Kate Walker romance books. Why? Because I loved how Ms. Walker went outside the normal ýwoman pining away for a man storylineý and created a male who fell in love and was willing to wait without confessing his feelings and putting any pressure on the lady in question. Talented and gifted Kate Walker writes a romance that combines characters like Cesare and Megan, who canýt help but [take] your heart away and leave you smiling through your tears of joy. She also gives the reader exotic locales and enticing [physical] tension. This brings the reader to the conclusion that this is another must read romance that is sure to find its way onto millionýs of keeper shelves throughout the globe. Knowing Kate Walker, is it any wonder why? When youýre out there looking for a romance book that not only makes for good reading but also has the ability to reach out and touch the deepest recesses of your heart, mind, and soul, then Ms. Walkerýs The Sicilianýs Wife is one romance that needs to be on the top of your list. Kate Walker again shows why she is the absolute Queen of emotional dialogue. Ms. Walker plays on the reader's heartstrings like a master harpist. Her characters' trials and anguish are so carefully crafted that the reader is pulled into the storms of inner feelings and can feel the characters' pain and sorrow, as well as their eventual joy. Cesare and Megan marry for what seems like the most practical reason of all...she's pregnant. Thing is, it's another man's baby. Cesare steps into the role of husband and father, only to discover there won't be a baby after all. Can they make the marriage work? Two people who leave too many words unsaid--words that need to be said--do they have a chance at love?

Clearly a labor of love, this book covers in detail the history of the singing cowboy in popular music -- and the American imagination. Mini-bios of dozens and dozens of not-so-well-known singers and Western musical groups, in more or less chronological order, stand beside fuller explorations of the work of the Sons of the Pioneers, Roy Rogers, Gene Autry and Tex Ritter. Green also puts the singing cowboy phenomenon into cultural context and delineates the shift from ranch-hand songs, to romantic paens about the West itself, to the current mini-renaissance. This is no hard-eyed social history, but an affectionate valentine. My only complaint: Out of humility or whatever, Green gives himself and fellow members of Riders in the Sky relatively little credit for the resurgence of interest in Western music. So let me add a footnote: For many of us out here, Riders in the Sky reawakened long-buried childhood dreams of tumbling tumbleweeds and blue shadows on the trail, making awesome music and contributing some classic songs to the canon themselves. For that -- and this excellent book -- thanks!

This is a most informative book...with enough information to keep the truly serious Western Music researcher happy, while not "drowning" the average leisure reader with "monotonous" facts.
Douglass B. Green (aka: Ranger Doug, "idol of American youth") is a very important figure in the preservation of Western Music History. His book is strong enough to be used as a college text, yet engrossing enough to keep most reading to the very end.
This is a most enjoyable book.

Singing In The Saddle: The History Of The Singing Cowboy by music historian and performer Douglas B. Green is an engaging and impressively informative presentation of the history of western music, films, and performers of America, both before and after World War II. Black-and-white photographs enhance this avidly detailed and lovingly written survey of an aspect of American Popular culture. Douglas B. Green ("Ranger Doug" from the Grammy Award-wining group Riders in the Sky) is to be commended for his expertise, his ability to write for the non-specialist general reader, and his ability to acquire anecdotal stories and recollections by some of the most experienced and influential members of the "singing cowboy" community.

"Singing in the Saddle" is a very nice book with a slightly different angle to to it's counterparts. There is information in this book that I have not found in other books about the singing cowboys. All in all the book is very well worth it's money for what it offers. What I do find disappointing however is the fact that the book does not quite live up to it's title. For example the book covers a lot of information about artistes who had nothing to do with 'singing in a saddle', such as radio and stage singers only, a good many of whom either died a long time ago and/or I have never heard of.
Personally, I would have liked the book to have covered only the movie singing cowboys, not enough was said about some of them, apart of course from Gene Autry, Roy Rogers and Tex Ritter.
As a book that deals with the history of country and western music and the performers of such, then you are getting good value for money.

Green's Singing in the Saddle provides an articulate wide-ranging history of the Singing Cowboy from its origins in western folk culture to the triumph of the B Westerns. He draws strong portraits of both primary stars and lesser known actors who contributed to the genre. An excellent introduction and a must for country music collections.

I read this book before my first trip to Nashville and was miles ahead of others coming to town who had not read this masterpiece. It is by far the most thoroughly researched, informative, complete, concise guide to Nashville's music industry ever published, and should be on the best seller list. If you have ever considered a career as a songwriter or want to be a successful recording artist, you must read this book cover to cover. It's easy reading, packed with useful info, and written by a very nice, successful woman who lives in Nashville and knows the industry because she has worked in it her whole life.

This compact little book is a great read and full of great advice for songwriters and musicians looking to pursue opportunities in country music, specifically Nashville.
Ms. Bond is a music publisher and has worked in the Nashville arena for years. She gives examples on the Nashville number system (for reading/recording music), how to label your CD's and inserts and she gives the addresses and names of some of the best and more affordable recording studios in and around Music City. She also included the contact info for some of the top producers, publishers and A&R in country today! There's also a great section on all of the best open mic spots, restaurants and accommodations in and near Nashville.
In my opinion, this book is for someone that is seriously considering a career as a country musician/songwriter. And if that's you, then it's a great reference book to have in your arsenal.

This is a great book that fills a real need -- practical advice for anyone who aspires to be a songwriter or performer in Nashville. I work in the music industry in Nashville and am often asked for advice from songwriters new in town. I'm not necessarily qualified to give advice, so now I can recommend this book. One of the most interesting features is a chapter that suggests a week's itinerary, including where to eat lunch. Often people will come to town and not have any idea of what to do. They'll try to drop in on busy publishers, get turned away again and again and then go home thinking everyone on Music Row is unfriendly. Bond explains the right way to get your foot in the door. Again, highly recommended.
Fantastic, insightful read.

Sherry Bond's book is an absolute must for anyone who wishes to pursue a career as a songwriter or performer. Her book covers many areas other guide books leave out, such as the importance of networking and where to go to make contacts. For me, it gave me the confidence that I could go out and make a living as a songwriter. I recommend it for everyone interested in the music business as a whole - not just Country.
A "must" for aspiring & novice country western songwriters.

The fine art of songwriting and marketing it to a music business audience is covered in this title, which provides an examination of the Nashville music industry and how an aspiring songwriter or musician can get heard in the big city. Bond is a songwriter and music publisher who blends interviews with music professionals with details on record companies, producers, recording studios, and others. Chapters cover all the basics, from preparing a product to marketing and avoiding common errors.

This book is as raw and soulful as the greatest country and rockabilly music gets. Great essays on contemporay stars Dwight Yoakum and Marty Stuart (two of the few "real" artists in today's Garth-in-the-park, yuppiefied, mall rat Urban Country scene). Also, a look at Pat Boone (how could such a soulless singer come from Tennessee!), the great, but sadly forgotten Johnny Horton and an ex-country wannabe who became a segragationist candidate for Govenor of Mississippi.
Excellent, and exhaustive, history of 1 of Soul's best.

Bowman's love for the music and personnel of the Stax label is plainly clear as he weaves its exciting, sometimes turbulent, history into a story that is as entertaining as it is informative. The interviews with the involved parties is what makes the book what it is, elevating the history from what could be a dry textbook, to a feel of a story told over dinner. The demise of Stax is truly a heartbreaking story that reflects America's, and specifically the South's, experience of the time. Fantastic work!

Biographical essays of well-known as well as fairly obscure musicians and industry types. Escott has made a career out of telling outrageous, sometimes salacious, tales -- he gets to the rawer, visceral side of the story pretty quickly, which is relatively easy when you're talking to folks who worked in the scraggly, scruffy early years of country, rock and blues. He's an engaging, consersational writer, and this latest collection is a delight. Includes essays on artists such as Dale Hawkins, Don Everly, Johnny Horton, Tim Hardin and a particularly cruel skewering of Pat Boone. In one of the most fascinating sections, Escott profiles the founders of record labels such as Decca, King, Starday and Hi -- a fascinating and very illuminating appoach to presenting the history of popular music. Beautifully laid out, well written and highly recommended.

Alex Kapranos' Sound Bites is a great collection of food essays Kapranos penned while on tour (mostly) with Franz Ferdinand. These little essays are tasty little tidbits with a twist. Kapranos' approach is unexpected and maybe a little twisted. The essays are delightful and this collection, while slim, will provide you with a lovely afternoon or two of reading. Enjoy.

so the guy from franz ferdinand tours the world and writes about what he eats. but it's more than that, it's not just the food, it's the atmosphere, it's the thoughts and feelings the food and atmosphere conjure up. it's all there. each "chapter" is no more than two pages, a quick sampling, but in those two pages, you get a feel and a taste for a place, for a moment of time. it's fun, funny, occasionally poetic, and even comes with a list of addresses and phone numbers of the restaurants talked about in the book.
so worth your time, a definate buy.

This is one of most entertaining foodie/travel/memoir books I've read in a long time! You don't have to be a fan of Franz Ferdinand to read this--it's a very worldly, witty, thoughtful collection of impressions about food and life, life on the road, restaurants around the world, and more. Kapranos also shares food-related stories of growing up in England and Scotland (where he was a chef before becoming a rock star). Highly recommended!

Lawrence Maslon should be thanked and congratulated for offering a concise and informative Sound of Music book. Although there have been a few Sound of Music books written in the past, this book is probably the first of its kind to tell the story in a concise manner. The Hirsch book on the film and the reissued Max Wilk book on the stage show were great books in their own right, but I think this book tops them all.
Although the numerous photos are the draw of this coffee-table book, a coffee-table book should offer much more than pretty photographs. For this it certainly delivers. His meticulously researched, well-written text tells us the whole Sound of Music story from Maria's birth to the first Austrian stage production in 2005. This book covers all important stops in the history of SOM up till now, and does not dwell too long on any one time period. An added treat is the inclusion of song lyrics and commentaries on the songs, explaining how they were written and what role they played in the musical. I admit there are a few typo errors in the text, but this well-researched book is jam-packed with facts of the musical. You could literally dip your teeth into it and come out a Sound of Music junkie. I do wish there were also lyrics and commentaries for I Have Confidence, So Long, Farewell and also The Lonely Goatherd.
In short, a really great Sound of Music book that makes a splendidd addition to any Sound of Music collection, except that the print tends to be a little too small for the size of the book. Otherwise, a really wonderful book from cover to cover, and a seminal work in the entire world of this well-loved musical. I think this is a book that deserves to be in print forever.

Wonderful! Very complete compilation of many sources regarding the Sound of Music. Covers not only the movie, but also the stageplay, the history behind the script and music, and the history of the Von Trapps themselves. The pictures are absolutely beatiful! There are stills from the movie, from the original Broadway cast, from many Broadway revivals, as well as many behind the scenes shots. This is a must have for anybody who loves the story of the Sound of Music.

This is definitely the best CD that I have heard in a while! It is certainly better than those of the majority of female singer/song writers that have come out in the last few years!
Musically, it is a mix of pop and rock, with more of a upbeat pop sound throughout most songs. The artists that Michelle Branch sounds most like would be from my point of viiew Jennifer
Knapp and Plumb, both christian contemporary artists. The first song on the CD is ''Everywhere'' a song that sounds musically somewhat like Plumb's ''Stranded''. It is Michelle Branch's hit from this record and you can surely tell why-the first time you hear it you love it! Other standout songs are ''All you wanted'' which sets a bouncy beat to lyrics about a helping love relationship. ''You set me free'' the song immediately following the one above is also a good song as is ''I'd rather be in love'' which also has a nice opening and chorus. My favorite song, though, is ''Here with me'' which is a very catchy song, one which you could put on repeat forever. All said, almost every song on this CD is perfect and serves to prove Michelle Branch is a very talented young artist.

I'm a bit of a lazy guitarist, so I don't like sitting down and figuring out chords by ear. Because of this, I first tried using the free tablature I found on the Internet--not such a good idea--a lot of it was incorrect and I found that good versions of songs are pretty hard to come by. So, one day I was browsing in a local music store and I found this book. Even though it was kind of expensive, I decided to buy it because I love the album and I wanted to be able to play along with it. Let's just say that buying this book was one of the best decisions I've ever made. I can play almost all the songs now--using the CORRECT chords and not something some amateur came up with. It's a great book and will definitely help you out if you're trying to play these songs.

This book has an amazing amount of information but I find it hard to read straight through and instead wind up jumping from artist to artist and such. What I do love is the photos of my heroes in action,my favorites being a complete picture of Peter Green with the Orange amps behind him(a cropped version is used for Gary Moores "Blues For Greeny" cd),the Cafe Au Go Go shot of BB King,Clapton and Elvin Bishop jamming(a cropped version leaving out Elvin was used for "Riding With The King") and an alternate angle shot of Cream at Madison Square Garden(this date is used for the cover of "Live Cream") with a nice view of Cream's weaponry behind them(man,I love gear). That all being said its hard to imagine a more complete source of information on what is probably my favorite style of music,British Blues.

Full disclosure: I am a guitar geek. I was the guy at sock hops who'd sit by the record player, not dancing, reading the liner notes (remember those?), and dreaming of stardom.
What Christopher Hjort has accomplished with this volume is nothing less than amazing - a day-by-day accounting of concerts, club gigs, recording sessions, photo sessions, BBC broadcasts and even informal rehearsals by the movers and shakers of the blossoming British Blues scene. For the five years covered in this book, the careers of John Mayall, Eric Clapton, Peter Green, Mick Taylor (and pretty much anyone who came within five feet of an amplifier or microphone stand) are tracked in exquisite detail. The painstaking research is rewarding to anyone interested in the early days of groups like Fleetwood Mac, Cream and The Rolling Stones, and the cameos by Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck and Jimi Hendrix are the icing on the cake.
Great rare photos, detailed equipment lists, and Mr. Hjort's own recommendations for those wishing to hear the music described therein, this book is a keeper. I may have to get another one for lending out.

I'm not kidding with this title (well, maybe half-kidding). Like the Bible is, in some ways, the history of the Hebrew people, this book is a veritible day-by day document of the activities of Slowhand (God), John Mayall (Father), Peter Green (Green God) and Mick Taylor (Younger brother of God). I'll admit to being at first a bit put off about the calendar style of writing, but you easily sink into the format. Its all here. The story of British Blues as seen through the eyes of the greatest British guitarists of their generation. You will learn obscure details, such as set lists, equipment played and what went on in the recording studios. The formidible impact of Clapton on British music and blues in general is clearly illustrated here. Also, I was not aware that Paul Butterfield played gigs with Mayall during their tour there, or the fact that Bloomfield and Clapton connected in Britain prior to Clapton's visits to the U.S. The detailed info on the Beano, Hard Road and Crusade Mayall albums is worth the cost of the book alone (If this sounds like so-much guitar mumbo jumbo, celebrate, because it is!!!!! Those of you who are into this stuff will have a huge ball!!). The performance reviews are both insightful and at times extremely humorous. For instance, one review reports that all members of Cream, during an early gig, were so high that they got stuck in the "Cat's Squirrel" riff loop and it took them 15 minutes to find their way out of it. (:-). Beyond the detail, this book provides a clear picture of the British blues scene, specifically that scene revolving around John Mayall and his allumni. Mayall, in fact, provides the intro. The period covered runs from Clapton's membership in the Yardbirds through Derek and the Dominoes in the early '70s. Of course, other bands, including Hendrix (the best of them all), Free and Jeff Beck are also included. However, this book definitely has a Mayall focus. My only regret is that there wasn't any info on the Graham Bond Organization. However, for that info we also have the bio of the late great Dick Heckstall Smith which came out a couple of years ago. I heartily recommend this book to anyone who really wants to learn about one of the most formative periods in popular music, the rise of British Blues. It will inspire all you guitar players to dust off that Les Paul, plug in that Bluesbreaker Marshall and try your hand at "Steppin' Out"!

"Strange Brew: Eric Clapton & The British Blues Bloom" by rock historian Christopher Hjort is a history of the 1960s British blues music boom in general, and Eric Clapton's stellar music career from 1965 to 1970 in particular. "Strange Brew covers hundreds of gigs, radio and television appearances, recording sessions, discographical information, trivia, contemporary reviews, and first-hand accounts and recollections from ex-band members and fans. Some of the stories will be new information for even the most dedicated Clapton fan, such as the comprehensive account of Clapton's Greek odyssey in 1965 (including the true story of The Glands and Greek band The Juniors, as well as fresh information about John Mayall's recording with Bob Dylan). Here presented in a day-by-day format laced with photographs and memorabilia, the way the musicians behind the British Blues worked together, influenced each other, and helped each other to ever greater musical accomplishments. This book is an awesome study aid to Jesus Christ's Sermon on the Mount, Matthew Chapters 5-7. As I read through the book I had so many "WOW!" moments as I began to understand Christ's Words and teaching. It's a deep, but an enriching study. I think studying the Sermon on the Mount and committing ourselves to carrying out the teachings of Christ is what our existence is all about. Among all the doctrine, parables, and lessons of the Bible, none is as difficult to walk in as The Sermon on the Mount. Jesus' teachings, captured in Matthew 5, challenge and convict all thoughtful believers.
Oswald Chambers offers radical insights into those difficult-to-live-out principles. For example:
"The Sermon on the the Mount produces despair in the heart of the natural man, and that is the very thing Jesus means it to do." p.10 and,
"[Jesus] did not come to teach us only: He came to make us what He teaches we should be." p.10
Even the most mature believer will be challenged by Chambers as he gets infinitely close to our tender spots: "Most of us are pagans in a crisis; we think and act like pagans." p.57
Oswald Chambers, best known for his no-nonsense, plain speaking about the most difficult truths in the Christian experience hits the mark time and time again in this special book.
This is real meat for the hungry soul.

First I would like to point out that the dark cover shown in the first photo for this product is not the one the publisher is shipping at this an on a point, highlight the ability of God in contrast to our inability, and then to challenge you directly to wholly lean on God for your strength to obey God. He emphasizes that the Holy Spirit will come through to help you obey. He's very direct without fancy illustrations. However his typical word picture or illustration usually packs a whale of a punch, driving home the point with a spiritual weightiness not found in many books. I love this guy and highly recommend this particular book. It's worth every penny. An illustration of this is how he couches the idea that you are the salt of the earth against the idea that God has not called us as some seem to believe to be the sugar of the earth. In a few sentences he demolishes what was a very popular view of how Christians should be. He then examines the effects of salt in a few situations (wound dressing for one example) to show that we must impact those around us even if it doesn't feel good for them initially.
He doesn't waste your time with long stories that feel good but don't have a lot of power in them. He packs each paragraph. There are many meaty thoughts in this book. Don't hesitate to purchase a copy if you have an extra eight bucks.

I was delighted to see this particular title listed among your Owald Chambers books for sale. I have devoted 15 years to researching and writing about the Biblical roots and influences in early A.A.'s Christian Fellowship. And no one can fully grasp the story of early A.A., its cures, and its principles and practices without understanding the importance that the pioneers attached to the sermon on the mount (Matthew 5 to 7). Sadly, a number of AAs have settled for the belief that Emmet Fox's Sermon on the Mount was the cornerstone of A.A.'s sermon emphasis. No so! The fact is that both A.A. co-founders Dr. Bob and Bill W. stated that the sermon itself contained the underlying philosophy of A.A. And my title The James Club: The Original A.A. Program's Absolute Essentials (http://www.dickb.com/JamesClub.com) contains a verse by verse study of the three parts of the Bible AAs considered essential--the sermon, the book of James, and 1 Corinthians 13. Hence it is with the Bible itself that A.A. students of spirituality should start. Next, however, they need to know how broad was the supplementary reading. And that is where Oswald Chambers comes in. Dr. Bob and his wife stressed the importance of the sermon, and they read it in their groups and in the early meetings. But Dr. Bob also accumulated, read, studied, and circulated the background sermon books. And I found these among his library (that came into the hands of his son and daughter). I encountered Oswald Chambers's Studies in the Sermon on the Mount, E. Stanley Jones's The Christ of the Mount, Emmet Fox's The Sermon on the Mount, several books by Robert E. Speer that covered parts of the subject, a number of books by Rev. Sam Shoemaker to the same end, several titles by Harry Emerson Fosdick such as The Manhood of the Master, and a number of books by Glenn Clark. And all of these presented a broad field of interpretive writings on Jesus's sermon that enhanced the early pioneers' understanding. And if one takes Chambers's title and sets it alongside Jones's title, he will see that these two writers were, in effect, contending that the gift of the holy spirit without the sermon on the mount in practice was as inadequate as the sermon on the mount in practice without the power of the holy spirit.
I have written two titles, Dr. Bob and His Library, and The Books Early AAs Read for Spiritual Growth. Both include Chambers and his studies as favorites. And people who want to get the full depth of the early A.A. Christian believing will profit immensely by looking at this Chambers book.
As an aside, when I contacted Mrs. W. Irving Harris, widow of Rev. Sam Shoemaker's assistant minister, she provided me with a complete set of the Oswald Chambers books indicating these were part of Sam's favorite books. The set has now been donated to the Griffith Library in East Dorset, Vermont; and one can gain a good understanding of the importance of Chambers to the thinking of the New York A.A. ideas taught by Rev. Sam Shoemaker to Bill Wilson and to the Akron fellowship's focus as led by Dr. Bob.
God Bless, Richard G. Burns, J.D.
Incidentally, it would appear that Amazon has erroneously listed my colleague Terry Dunford as the writer of this review, but it is I who makes the review and recommendations.

If you are looking for an emotional ride, be sure to grab a copy of THE SICILIAN'S WIFE.
