Fallout is in this tradition of groundbreaking journalism.
Unfortunately Gonzalez is so ahead of the pack that when I showed his article to my son and exhusband, whom I was trying to convince that our son should not remain at Stuyvesant High School, four blocks north of the World Trade Center, they dismissed it as a red herring.
Fallout is a compelling account of this environmental disaster which may ultimately claim more lives than the attacks themselves.

Where Is This Story In The Media?Review Date: 2002-11-30
The national media has not pursued the obvious leads -- the common sense questions -- but Mr. Gonzales has. And the logical conclusion of this story, in the not-too-distant future, is a public health nightmare that will have the media self-righteously condeming Giuliani and Whitman in hindsight as bearing responsibility for perhaps thousands more deaths.
The story from 9/11 that the media immediately created was of the heroes and victims. We remember them, and try to forget the horror of the collapsing towers. But if we are a truely a courageous nation, we will look clearly and not turn away from the terrible reality that ground zero represents. That is what I think this book is really about -- there are facts and consequences of 9/11 that have not yet been dealt with. And closing our eyes and wishing them away simply won't work.
Patriots: Read This and Weep!Review Date: 2002-10-17
Our sacred institutions are rotten. Every American citizen should read this brief but incendiary work which speaks truth to power unflinchingly. If we do not quickly institute major changes which make our leaders and representatives truly responsible for telling the truth to the American public, however unpleasant, we may be facing the end of American democracy as we have known it and believed in it.
Where are the Thomas Paines and Thomas Jeffersons of the twenty-first century? We desperately need your voices and leadership!
The FBI Failed Us Before 9/11; The EPA Failed Us AfterwardsReview Date: 2002-06-26
If you live or work in lower Manhattan and/or have any interest in the true story of how our government knowingly and intentionally jepordized the lives and health of the rescue workers, residents and workers downtown after 9/11 while ensuring that their own health was well protected, this book is a "must read."
Juan Gonzalez is to be commended for his courage in bucking his editors to continue to cover this story.

An Eerie Yet Endearing GemReview Date: 2007-12-18
Well, it was funny, spooky and a whole lot more "whammies" than I had bargained for.
Wait until you read about the Burdey Family and other Ozark characters - I laughed so hard, I nearly went into cardiac arrest!
Ghostly? Jayne has created a ghost that we meet in a classically creepy way but by the end of the book becomes an eerie but endearing member of the family.
But, beyond the double whammy . . .
Whammy Three: The ghost, Hiram, is an incredible vehicle through which to view and appreciate history, the kind of personal, real-life history that reminds us of our place in it all.
Whammy 4: Jayne uses this oddball plot and set of characters to present a powerful message about the role of music in our lives
Whammy 5: I have read Jesse Stuart and many other depictions of education in one-room schoolhouses. This may be the best of them all - warm, uplifting, yet faithful to historic fact.
Fiddler's Ghost is a great fireplace read, with whispers of Mark Twain and Garrison Keillor throughout. Get it, read it, and enjoy!

Hall-of Fame Bartender says Ghost Almighty!!!Review Date: 2007-09-13
Wow, amazing and splendiferous (a Mark Twain word) are not large enough descriptions for this riveting tale.
Pay very serious attention if you are lucky enough to run into a ghost like this one.
The descriptions of experiences of the other side, consciousness, spirituality and God are marvelously explained and balanced in the enchanting work.
`Life ends but existence doesn't!'
In my personal encounters with the paranormal, (example: a night spent alone in St. Louis' Union Station's tower before the shopping mall conversion) I've had some exciting feelings but nothing like this. Wouldn't mind it at all.
I hadn't read a good ghost story in a long time and when asked to look at it I was expecting a `Keep the lights on at night!' sort of experience.
Far, far from scary, my journey was one of love, humor and appreciation of someone who knows how to tell a damn good story. I broke out laughing in some parts.
Mitch Jayne can flat out write!
This is a story of how a young couple finding their way after WWII learn to accept, learn from and help a long wandering spirit. Uncle Hiram has a fierce dedication to all music old and new.
If you're a music lover, much less a musician, this is seriously a must read!
Imagine a ghost tucking a Guarnerius under his chin even making chiming sounds with it. Made me research `Carol Of The Bells'.
You will have a trip through American musical history from the beginning to today.
In "Fiddler's Ghost" you'll discover a feeling for good old Missoura logic, thinking and country language (`gravel for his goose', `drink it reverend', `squanderin' an opinion', `sizes a man's pile like a tax assessor', etc.) that is leaving us all too quickly.
My, oh my, the Ozarkean food and drink (sage dressing with baked ham, venison roast wrapped in bacon, pecan and mincemeat pies, etc.) will have you packing for Rolla and Branson in a heartbeat.
The worst part of the book is that once I started it simply refused to allow me to put it down so I missed some sleep. Don't know if Uncle Hiram was in my home but if he was Harry, the older Doberman, must have enjoyed him because he kept making puppy sounds the entire time.
Do not deny yourself the absolute pleasure of "Fiddler's Ghost".
It's much, much more than a very splendid read!

Moving a Musical to the Big ScreenReview Date: 2005-09-23
Darcie Denkert is an expert on both Broadway and Hollywood. In this book she has carefully researched a series of the most famous musicals that were made into movies. Sometimes, like with Gypsy, the play simply doesn't translate into the big screen. The scene at the train station, for instance when Rose is shifting her attentions to Louise after June left in the play works well. The train station doesn't look like a train station, it looks like a set. The orchestra is visible, the song works. In the movie, at a real train station, you don't just burst into song. And the stars, great movie stars, just didn't fit.
This is the kind of information that only an insider with a foot into each camp could get and then put into a book. Referring to Gypsy again, the author also tells us how the stories got written, who did what, how did the music get written, what did they do in the screenplay to adapt it?
The book covers 6 big plays: My Fair Lady, West Side Story, Gypsy, The Sound of Music, Cabaret, and Chicago, and 8 smaller ones. This format gives all the space that is needed to completely tell the story. Gypsy, for instance gets 38 pages, and they're big pages. To we outsiders, not plugged into either Broadway or Hollywood, this is an absolutely fascinatin book.

A Treasury of Art SongReview Date: 2005-02-11
The song texts are easy to use as they are accompanied by a three-fold index that lists the contents by composer, poets, and titles and first lines. The songs in the book are arranged alphabetically. The book also includes an excellent introduction by Fischer-Dieskau which manages to be both an overview and highly personal at the same time.
In addition to helping to find texts and translations of songs on recordings, this book has many other uses. It can be used simply to read the poetry that was set by the great composers of song and to follow-up by listening to settings of poems that the reader finds appealing. The book can be used as a guide to songs that were set by more than one composer or to explore songs. The book includes many texts that were set by the great masters of song, including Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Wolf, and others. There are many other texts set by composers who are obscure. For those with a desire to do so, this book can be used as a means of finding and exploring songs by composers who lie somewhat outside the most familiar track. And, of course, this is a wonderful book simply for browsing.
This book will delight any lover of art song and would make a treasured and unique gift to any lover of song.

Must read for any real CSNY FAN!!Review Date: 2007-10-17
An Essential Read For All Music FansReview Date: 2004-02-29
Ranging from 1970 to 2002 in terms of first publication, the articles and interviews cover the development of CSNY from a self confident, but untested, aggregation of individuals through to being elder statesmen of rock capable of selling out tours of major venues in the early 21st century. Although the primary ingredient is pieces that focus specifically on the band as a whole, Zimmer leavens the mix with items that focus on the individuals, using them to cast a more oblique and often revealing light on the activities and behaviour of the "main" band. Not surprisingly, the majority of the articles come from US publications; that said, these include both the usual suspects - primarily "Rolling Stone" and writers such as Cameron Crowe - and also less well known (at least in the UK) publications such as "Crawdaddy" and "Creem". There are, however, some significant pieces from UK publications such as "Melody Maker" and UK writers such as Roy Carr and Vicki Wickham.
Music is the central interest of Zimmer's selection of pieces. CSNY were, however, notable for the nature of their personal, as well as professional, lives and the issues are not shied away from. Some of it requires reading "between the lines", but such articles as Roy Carr's interview with David Geffen, Zimmer's own major interview with Graham Nash and the pieces on David Crosby's drug addiction deal with the issues head on.
Inevitably, there are some personal favourites that didn't survive what must have been a rigorous editing process. Dave Zimmer is, however, to be massively congratulated for delivering a consistent and coherent narrative thread and fitting together the jigsaw like pieces of 30 years of writing to present a clear and illuminating picture of one of the major popular musical outfits of the late 20th century. A worthy companion to his and Henry Ditz's "Crosby, Stills and Nash: The Biography".

(4.5 Stars) DeliveranceReview Date: 2008-04-09
From the Extreme shows the reader that you can repent, be delivered, and be healed from whatever is going on within your life. What I mainly enjoyed about this book was that no matter what obstacles that was put in front of Rachael, she pulled through them and pressed her way through. Author Renea Collins continued to make God an intricate part of the story that was profound. There are scriptures quoted and prayers prayed throughout the different parts of this book. You may try to imagine yourself as Rachael and try to figure out what you would do if you were in these situations. She takes you through all of the issues that the main character goes through and how she depended on no one but God to bring her out of the storm. From The Extreme will make you think about your life in terms of how well of a relationship you have with the Lord.
