I have come in search of The Last Bit Bear because of my college experience. I have found that since I have been in college very few people have been strong enough to be an individual. The Last Bit Bear is the story of a bear who is the last of his kind, an individual by default. It is a story of how he searches for other Bit bears but in the end finds that he is the last bit bear; he finds his Self. This book will encourage children to be individuals and go in search of their Self, adults as well. I love all children's books but this one in particular because of the powerful message it sends in the classic form of a fable. I applaude the author.

Thom McEvoy, associate professor and extension forester at theUniversity of Vermont has written a very helpful reference for theprivate woodland owner. It deals not only with legal issues but also covers taxes, estate planning, management, surveying, ethics and current perspectives on sustainable forestry. It gives enough background and detail to clarify confusing legal concepts but not so much as to burden the reader. Throughout it carries a wonderful point of view: it is often wiser and more productive to solve issues without the law than to get adversarial. As a bonus the book has some very useful appendices which include lists of extention forestry specialists, attorneys general, an extensive glossary and suggested readings.
It has changed the practice of this woodland owner. I have become serious about estate planning. I am less threatened because I understand it better. I was also motivated to contact my lawyer about what I had thought were minor legal items. They were not. Thanks Thom McEvoy.
The book will remain a primary reference. A comfort and guide the next time I have a timber sale, hire a forester, buy or sell land or discuss boundaries with my neighbors.

This is a well researched, thorough, incitefull read for those interested in the Lehigh Valley. The illustrations, Cameo appearances and data tables all flow nicely and fully enhance the standard text. The narrative is complete but not complex and easy to follow for even the non science types. The history section was interesting and complete. I recommend this book to all interested parties.

Kluger's slim volume contains valuable insights into our modern culture and how, through the lessons of the mighty oak, we can better ourselves and better the way we make our way in this world. The author's strong connection to oaks is revealed through loving text and she graciously shares her wisdom with readers. This book should be translated into ever language and presented to anyone who marvels at the awesome power of Mother Earth.

Literature and the Environment: A Reader on Nature and Culture has been an invaluable resource and platform for discussion in my high school literature class that centers around the natural world and man's place in it. The essays, poems, and excerpts avoid groupthink, polarization of issues, and are, for the most part, accessible to students.

Both my sons loved this book!!

I'm a homeschooling mom, looking for books which inspire *and* inform, and this is a gem. The information is solid and well-presented and the pictures convey a sense of wonder for the subject. They pulled in my sons, both the quiet studious one, and the rambunctious can't-sit-still one - so it's got a pretty broad appeal. This is not a dry presentation of the facts, it is a passionate plea for us to wonder at and care about the earth.
It covers all aspects of soil fertility, including the roles that plants, micro-organisms and insects and animals play, in simple and accessible language. With facts that just blew my young son's mind. ("Mom, did you know that there are more micro-organisms in a single handful of soil, than there are people on the entire earth"). It also discusses human impact (mostly negative) and reminds us that if we take care of the earth, it will take care of us.
As a heads-up, we are organic here, but if you grow with chemicals, be prepared for some hard questions after your kids read this book.
I'm off to get her other two books about water and air. Hope they are as wonderful as this one is. Definitely a keeper.

Whenever I take a short vacation I take this book with me. It is always a pleasure to read a piece of it--like biting a piece from a candy bar. The author is a major scholar in the field of aesthetics of environment, so the credibility of the author is an established fact. The book contains a rich stream of ideas about aesthetics, environment, landscape, architecture, nature, and alike. Also in the book, the continuity and unity of human and built environments and nature are overarching principles; the engagement of body with environment is seen as essential; and architectural entities, landscape, and environment are all extensions of eachother. It is a delightful book for landscape, architecture, and environment folks as well as anybody who likes to read in these fields.
