This is a most magnificent book! The author obviously is a genius! If you buy only one book in your entire life, buy this one.
This book examines three approaches to resource management, not the usual two. Wow, a lot of work went into this superb book.
I highly recommend it!

Conserving our World Series
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-05
This is an informative series on various aspects of the destruction of our World. The content of all the books are written for children over 10. They discuss what is happening to the Earth and how it will affect us now and in the future. The series also explains how the reader can help counter the problem in each book. They also make it obvious to the readers why we need to save these valuable elements of our Earth, by stopping the destruction of them. The books hit a chord with young people, making them want to do something. I would recomend these to anyone, young or old wanting to read about our most precious resource, our home, the Earth.

A straightforward chronicle of the debate in Wisconsin's Fox River Valley more than fifty years ago

Review Date: 2006-09-02
Consuming Nature: Environmentalism In The Fox River Valley, 1850-1950 has an unusual dual nature - in one respect, it is a straightforward chronicle of the debate in Wisconsin's Fox River Valley more than fifty years ago, when the populace questioned and resisted the paper industry's heedless practice of dumping pollution into the Fox River. On a deeper level, Consuming Nature examines not only how this microcosm struggle, repeated in numerous areas elsewhere throughout the state and the nation, reflected not only the clash of economic industrial forces versus environmentalists, but also how it represented the growth of a consumer society. Consumers craved employment and products created by the paper industry, but consumers also craved the ability to enjoy recreation in Fox River, a privilege that excess pollution was about to destroy. At its core, Consuming Nature dares to advance the thesis that the modern environmental movement owes far more than most anyone would admit to the power and influence of consumer society.

We are part of nature not set apart from it.
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2002-04-07
Professor Peterson believes that:
1)The commercialized use, more than indigenous peoples' use of the forest lies at the root of Africa's environmental problems.
2)Central African traditional ecological knowledge suggests that we would do better to try to control the market forces that lead to overexploitation of the environment rather than unjustly restrict the subsistence practices of people who have lived in these forests much longer than ourselves.
3)The environmental wisdom of Central African forest peoples stems from the knowledge and belief that nature and humans are never separate entities but parts of one system.
4)We are part of nature not set apart from it.
5)Nature and culture, humans and environment, social ethics and environmental ethics, ecology and justice go hand in hand.
6)It is not humans or nature that are central; rather it is life that is primary, and that includes the entire community of life, for all of life is important, all of life is bonded, all of life is sacred.

This book is a story about two Clown Anemonefish and their lives. It takes place near Papua New Guinea in the great barrier reef. They live in sea anemone tentacles for safety. It tells about life under the sea with the animals and the plants. And at the end the two fish lay eggs. It has big, colorful illustrations and is fun and interesting to read.

Living in London in the early eighties I used to frequent a sort of leftie/anarchist bookshop near Campden Lock. There I discovered the world of the Whole Earth Review and The Whole Earth Catalogues. Just as well I did too or I would have ended only reading Soldier of Fortune and military books like the rest of my "squaddie" mates. I was in the Army at the time.

What really captivated me about the Whole Earth was the idea that there was an alternative to 9 to 5 go to work, to earn the money, to buy a house you can't afford and a car so you could sit in a traffic jam to get to that work. There were people out there pioneering new ways and new ideas.

A lot of the ideas such as alternative energy, environmentalism, Gaia Hypothesis, and personal computers are commonplace now.

Personally my bookshelves are full of authors (and ideas) I might never have come across without the Whole Earth.

This book is a readable account of the Whole Earth community and its impact on American/Global society.

I can't believe nobody has reviewed it.

I also recommend:

From Counterculture to Cyberculture: Stewart Brand, the Whole Earth Network, and the Rise of Digital Utopianism

and of course:

The Last "Whole Earth" Catalogue
