A Treasure For Cat and Art Lovers
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2005-09-08
I love this book. When I was in England, I came across a pillow featuring a cat dressed as King Henry VIII. I couldn't fit in my luggage and I didn't want to deal with having it shipped, so I passed it up, to my later regret. Back home, I searched everywhere online for an image of that cat and I finally found it here. Susan Herbert has taken many of the most famous paintings in the history of Western art and replaced the figures with cats. The results are wonderful for cat lovers and a true joy for lovers of both cats and art. I particularly enjoy comparing Herbert's paintings with the originals. Her ability to capture the human figure's expression on the face of a cat is uncanny. The masterpieces include Mona Lisa, a portrait of Queen Elizabeth I, Van Gogh's Self-Portrait after he cut off his ear, and so many more. Susan Herbert is a fantastic artist who also has a deep understanding of our feline friends. I would certainly love this book even if I wasn't familiar with the art it is based on, and would highly recommend if for anyone who appreciates cats.

Invaluable Tool for my Research Trip

Thank you, Paul Bahn, for making this book! I am planning a trip to Europe exclusively to visit cave art sites. I have been trying to find information about caves that are still open to the public, but was having a really hard time on my own finding anything helpful. My search has come to an end! This book has a wealth of information which will undoubtedly be invaluable for planning and during my trip. It covers more than 50 caves and relevant museums/centers throughout England, France, Spain, Portugal, and Italy that are open to the public.

Each cave is arranged by country. It has a description of the site and what there is to see as well as the histories and interesting facts about them. Coupled with the description is a list of practical information about the site which includes:

- The site's address, telephone, fax, website, and e-mail address
- Nearest city/town
- Nearest airport
- Nearest car rental
- Nearest train station
- Nearest bus route
- Nearest taxi or private car hire
- Restaurants in the vicinity
- Hotels in the vicinity

Then it has a list of questions which are each answered with as much detail as possible for each site. The questions are:

- When is the cave open?
- Admission prices?
- Storage facilities?
- Do you have to make a group?
- Can you reserve a place in a group?
- Languages of the guides?
- Length of tour?
- Is the cave privately owned?
- Is there a gift shop?
- Are there WC facilities?
- Handicapped access?
- Is there any climbing necessary?
- Distance to walk?
- Level of fitness required?
- Equipment required?
- What are the conditions inside the cave?
- Is it lit?
- Is it slippery?
- Is photography allowed?

There are maps and an informative introduction to the book that explains a lot about what to expect when you visit these sites. There is also some interesting information about cave art itself. There are many full color photos of the art you can expect to see. It is apparent that great care went into creating this guide. It far surpassed my expectations. It is clear, easy to read, and up to date. I can't wait to use it to help me plan my trip to Europe!

Brookgreen Gardens is an outdoors public sculpture garden and wildlife preserve near Myrtle Beach, S.C. Begun by a wealty businessman and his sculptor wife to showcase her work, it expanded during the Depression by buying other works, to help support other artists. This book has wonderful pictures and descriptions of some of the collection. There are works by artists we are all familiar with, it's an enjoyable book and the next best thing to going there yourself.

An excellent exploration of a man and his collection
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-05
This exhibit took place in New York, Paris and Amsterdam and focuses on Dr. Paul Gachet, Van Gogh's doctor in Auvers-sur-Oise during the last two months of his life.

Always a controversial figure (partly due to his arguable incompetence, partly due to the questionable authenticity of some of the works in his possession), this book is a wonderful exploration of the man and his collection. The authors, both frequent and well respected contributors to Van Gogh scholarship, explore Gachet and his collection (now owned by the Musée d'Orsay in Paris) to an incredible level of detail. The amount of research behind this book is staggering and it makes for an extremely compelling and satisfying reading experience.

Probably the most well researched book about Charles M. Russell. Even if one is not normally drawn to sculpture, this book could possibly be the one to change your mind. The subjects are varied, inspiring, and beautiful.

Charles Sheeler in Doylestown: American Modernism and the Pennsylvania Tradition investigates one artist's lifelong engagement with the rich, distinctive traditions of rural Buck's County. It charts Sheeler's discovery of the region's architechture and artifacts beginning about 1910, when he and fellow artist Morton Livingston Schamberg rented an eighteenth-century farmhouse in Doylestown. It assesses what impact this seminal event had on Sheeler's early career, and how his cyclical return to Bucks County themes in later life reveals poignant attachments and emotional depths not usually ascribed to this twentieth-century painter and photographer - known primarily as an iconographer of the machine. By analyzing Sheeler's core attachment to the preindustrial vernacular, this exhibition and its catalovue reconstruct his attempt to reconcile part and present in a series of powerful complex pictures that resulted from his enduring fascination with the Pennsylvanian tradition.
