The Progressive Art Collection comprises more than 6,300 pieces displayed nationwide and represents the international gold standard for corporate collecting. This striking compendium represents a cross-section of the collection, showcasing the work of nearly 300 artists from Andy Warhol, James Rosenquist, and Robert Rauschenberg, to Andreas Gursky, Brigitte Nahon, Petah Coyne, and Vik Muniz. This art is not mere food for thought. This is fuel for fire.

This is an ideal book to share with your class when discussing this chapter of history. There is a very wide range of reactions to the war, and an equally wide range of art styles and media. The short interviews with the artists, many of whom were combatants, are direct, not the usual elitist critical blather.

Locals Guide to the Bay Area
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2004-10-26
I rarely review books - but having just recieved this one as a gift - I felt it is worth giving a plug.

I'm Asian-American, love ethnic food of all types and have lived in San Francisco (yet another transplanted east coaster) for 15+ years.

Reading this guidebook gave me insight to a part of San Francisco where even I didn't have much awareness. I believe that 1/3 of the population is Asian - but from different parts of Asia - San Francisco Bay Area is extraordinarily unique. The only other places where I've seen a similar but different melting pot of Asian cultures is Singapore and NYC.

This guidebook covers food, shopping, nightlife, arts, theater and even alternative health care/fitness. It covers Chinese (Cantonese, Taiwanese, Shanghainese, etc.), Thai, Japanese, Philipino, Indian, Vietnamese, Afghan, Cambodian and a few others that I probably missed.

It truly is a cultural travel guide. My only complaint is that it is broad and not deep - but of course that's what lets the traveler and resident discover new treasures.

From The Inside Flap:
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-01-17
The Twentieth Century has been one of the most turbulent eras in world history. In 1900 the world was dominated by a handful of European powers and there were less than 40 independent states in the world. By 1919 the picture had altered considerably; colonies throughout the world had changed hands; the Austro-Hungarian Empire had been destroyed and two new great powers, the United States and Japan, had emerged on the scene. By the end of World War II the map of Europe had been transformed again; there were two super-powers and the colonial empires were breaking up. There are now over 160 independent countries in the world and although the US-Soviet rivalry continues, new groupings like OPEC have emerged as powers on the world stage.

Many of these changes have come about in war, whether in lesser-known struggles like the Russo-Japanese War or the more recent wars of revolution and liberation in Africa and Asia or in the two devastating world conflicts. ATLAS OF 20TH CENTURY WARFARE charts the progress of war and diplomacy in these and many other struggles as well as providing up-to-date coverage of the situation in Afghanistan, the Middle East and Africa and showing the influence on the modern world of power blocks like NATO and the Warsaw Pact.

This book features more than 200 maps all prepared by Richard Natkiel, chief cartographer of The Economist, renowned for its expert coverage of political and military affairs. Each map is complemented by an authoritative explanatory text and many are also illustrated by carefully selected historical photographs.

If your are a working and/or just love visual arts, this book is a MUST to have. It is a pure pleasure to see these sequences and collages of photos arranged carefully and for my eye "perfect" - since I shoot still-sequences for the past 4 years. It's not just a coffee table book - it's to literally "inhale" its art.

Capturing Australia

Beautiful photographs, poetry, and a stunning original orchestral soundtrack that just makes you want to fly to Australia. The CD also incorporates soundscapes from where the photographs were taken that truly immerse you in the images with the live orchestral music. The music expresses the grand expanse of Australia's landscape, and captures the emerald rainforests in track 3. The sounds immerse you in rain storms, gentle thunder, night time in the outback and pristine rainforest streams. It is a hardcover coffee table book with the CD inside the front cover.

An articulate, literate flair for expression
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-06-09
His debut anthology, "Autobiomythography & Gallery: Poems" by poet, novelist, installation artist, and publisher Joe Millar admirably showcases his free verse poetry. An articulate, literate flair for expression, the poetry is especially characterized by its energy and eclecticism. Here is a body of verse that will be read and re-read with enthusiasm and appreciation by those who respect what the written word can achieve with imagination and unexpected perspectives. 'Slight Fit': All clouds are the new/retro.//Each mystifies/the next, an apparition/of apparatus.//Here comes the next big/thing--a camel squeezed through/a needle squeezed through the engines/of a private jet.//Reality is just Time slipping/ion a skin. War is a lonely;/hot date with itself.//Sit back. here's the part/we imagine ourselves.

I don't currently own this book, but it's number one on my Christmas list! I have reached multiple renewal limits at the local library with this title. The large number of artists included in the book provide a variation in painting style as well as informative text regarding the artist and his/her work. The color plates have been well chosen to give the reader an appreciation for the masters of watercolor painting. I have returned again and again to Awash in Color as a reference for my own paintings.

WAR WAS NEVER LIKE THIS

Fatso Gioninni -- Boatswain's Mate First Class, Captain of LCU 1124 on Duty with the United States Navy's Mediterranean Fleet -- Had everything going for himself and his crew. CAP'N FATSO AND IS INIMITABLE CREW found themselves embroiled in hot water that the Navy could approve in no way...

His landing craft was being used as a freighter to deliver liquor to various embassies around the Mediterranean and that meant Fatso and his boys were on their own.

Their infallible talent for trouble leads to many escapades dealing with Cap'n Fatso's one-man (and not-so-cold) war with units of the Russian fleet in Mediterranean waters. First there was their own little Mediterranean war, with their one small LCU 1124 pitted against the Russian fleet. Fortunately -- or unfortunately -- a mine too close for comfort, made them give that one up. Then there was the big caper that involved A U.S. built gunboat the Russians were escorting to the Egyptians, a Russian frogman defector who was a very clever girl and Fatso's friends, the Israelis. It all worked out -- Cap'n Fatso and his men held the original patent on coming up smelling like roses.

Hilarious antics for old salts and land lubbers alike ..
