I bought this book after visiting the MET and spending a day just in the Roman wing. The book is a very useful reference for the works there; all pictures are in color and each object is described just as in the museum. My only disappointment is that a larger-than-life bronze Greek statue, perhaps my favorite in the entire collection, is not included. Nevertheless, this book, like the MET itself, is almost holy to me.

Stunning Tibetan Art / Should Be a Best-Seller
Helpful Votes: 14 out of 14 total.
Review Date: 2000-08-02
This magnificient collection showed at the Portland (Oregon) Art Museum several years ago. In terms of the quality of the thanka paintings, bronzes and ritual items gathered for the exhibit and reproduced in gorgeous full-color detail in this book, it is second only to "Wisdom and Compassion." The latter benefited from a national audience, widespread publicity, and publication of its catalog by the nation's largest art book publisher. By comparison, this handsome volume is almost unknown. The collection includes unflinching depictions of deeply esoteric symbolism found nowhere else. This book is not only a true bargain but also a must-have for anyone interested in Tibetan art. Although I have many more recent books on the subject, this is one I return to again and again, with great joy and appreciation.

A "must" for all Whitfield Lovell fans.
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-04
Whitfield Lovell is famed for his art combining on-site drawings with found objects and other components of personal metaphor, African-American ancestry, and cultural memory. Using images from photographs of people from the 1920s and 1930s, Lovell evokes and honors an era with heavily layered narrative drawings manifesting timelessness and universality. The Art Of Whitfield Lovell is enhanced with an informative essay by Lucy Lippard and a "must" for all Lovell fans.

This guide is a beautifully put together resourse for all art lovers, students and museum professionals. It is extremely clear and easy to use. I found wonderful places to visit in my own backyard that I wasn't even aware of previously. I also can't wait to take my next trip to another part of the country and visit these wonderful museums! The guide is a real inspiration to get up and out to all of these great institutions.

A seminal, inspiring and in depth presentation of A*C M
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 1997-08-06
Of all the books on the arts and crafts movement in America I regret and am dismayed at the discontinuance of this book. I have read some fifty books and none presents as clear and concise a documentation of the A&C Movement in America as Ms. Kaplans. Those seriously interested in the movement can not achieve a solid understanding without reading this work. Comprehensive, extremely well documented with photographs and research with essays that are remarkable for their breadth and depth. Exceptional book

I picked this book up at the National Gallery of Art in Washinton DC in the summer of 1998. It's a beautiful collection of old French posters, programs and advertisements. A wonderful addition to a collection of either art or French history books!

Coolest book at the Comic Book shop.
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2003-06-09
I highly recommend this book. It's like eavesdropping on the conversations between the interviewer and the 11 famous comic book artists! The artists really open up and show thier human side, which include career struggles, fears, and life goals. They share what it was like as newbies to the comic book business, and how they dealt with obstacles in the work place, and in thier personal life. As an artsit myself, I quickly connected with the artists reply to questions being asked. I hung on their every word!

Not only is this book entertaining, but also educational, especially if your an aspiring comic book artist.

Read and enjoy!
