Nearly 1,000 beautiful full-color pictures!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2003-01-15

This is a big (9-inch X 12-inch, over 500 pages) coffee table book, absolutely crammed full of beautiful full-color photographs--nearly 1,000 of them, many of them two-page spreads. It covers not only Harley-Davison's history, in text and photos, but also the different types of their bikes, roadtests, police bikes, military motorcycles, racing, custom bikes (gorgeous photos!) and even a chapter on the Honda, Kawasaki and other "look-a-likes" (the sincerest form of flattery).

The text is informative, with specifications, descriptions and road tests on a great many machines, and an excellent history including the period when AMF owned Harley-Davidson, and the machines' quality suffered.

All this by an independent writer who has written similar books on other brands of motorcycle, as well--in other words, this is not a puff piece by the factory.

"To the bandana-wearing 'Hognoscenti,' a Harley-Davidson motorcycle is much more than the sum of its steel, chrome, rubber, plastic and leather parts." --Richard Fleury, co-author.

Nearly 40 years ago, I owned a 74-cubic-inch knucklehead Harley with a suicide clutch and tank shift. I remember it fondly, and were it not for my advanced age, I'd buy another one today regardless of the price.

I recommend this book highly to any Harley-Davidson enthusiast, for their library. (Yes, many of them are extremely literate.)

Very good history of a great rivalry.

As someone who is interested with the people racing the machines I was a little disappointed with the book. While it gives a very good, concise history of the two brands and the men that ran the companies it really does not focus that much on the racers who played out the rivalry on the boards, dirt tracks and hills. The book also seems to focus on the Indian Company more than the Harley company. Naturally one finds themselves rooting for the underdog Indian to find them loosing out in the end. I definately recommend this book for people interested in the history of these companies.

A great read. Worth the price, if you like Indian and Harley history. Turns out that Paul du Pont was actuallly a "wrench" disguised as a "suit". Many first read stories within the covers. 5-stars for research.

World's Most Expensive and Sought After V-Twin

This color-history book explains the unique oiling system of Harleys' first (intake and exhaust) OverHead Valve motor. Greg Field is one of the few authors that has access to Harley-Davidsons' detailed black and white "studio" photographs. The Knucklehead motor with those oil-filled lower valve spring covers and the utilization of internal suction created by the breather gear, is the epitome of "last minute" American engineering, that was developed in several stages. This book reveals the process. The Knuckle motor was a "runner" back then, and a "runner" today.

This book has great photos, fun text, and is an easy read. Great title for the coffee table. Buy it, read it, and come back to it later. This book is really designed more to look at than to "read", and it does very well what it was intended to do.

I've been riding 35 years and of course have my own opinions, history and observations, but overall I really like this book.

It is a book I would definitely recommend to anyone wanting to buy a bike for the first time. There are so many things to think about when riding and Ralph's book does a great job of laying them out and making one think about them. Anyone wanting to learn should read this book first and then take the MSF motorcycle course. It would definitely help them get riding safely, much faster than those who don't. In fact, it's probably a good read for any level of rider after you've had the bike in the garage for the last 5 months of winter and need a reminder of all the things to think about when riding on crowded public roads.

An excellent defensive driving guide, highly recommended.

Most of us doing high performance work on a diesel should have no problem figuring it out. This book is great if you plan any performance upgrades for you mill, from mild to wild. BUY IT!!!!

The ONLY tuner resource for Neon owners/lovers!
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2006-02-05
This book is a must have for any discerning Neon owner/lover! It has filled the void for Neon tuners everywhere, there isn't anything else like it out there. This book is carefully written and progresses from one system to another and shows how each one works together to make your car achieve better performance (with balance). The only thing it doen't cover is automatic transmissions. The author is both knowledgeable, truthful and "gives it to you straight" in this book. There are no inappropriate ads for racing/performance parts/companies in this book either; the author simply gives his recommendations as to what he has found to work. This book is appropriate for all skill levels and is not full of technical jargon. The book IS a must for anyone interested in modifying their neon, whether it's for the street, drag racing or some serious autocrossing.

I bought this Mustang book along with others and I thought this one was the best. It gives a good break out of the years of the mustang starting from 1979 to present. It also gives some great details on what parts go good with certain years of the mustangs. Wish they had more books like this one
