Great Resource for Resource Teachers!

I'm usually pretty skeptical about new books for teaching. This book contains practical lessons that are easy to use in the classroom. I've already recommended it to several of the Language Arts teachers that I work with. These strategies are good for students with LD as well as all students in the classroom.

There are many books, but few are geared to the practical, everyday processes of reacing out to a child with a disability. This book does that. Everything is step by step, and easy to carry out. I have been a SPED teacher for over 33 years. You can never, ever learn enough.

Great for 4th to 7th - MUST for Sp. Ed

This packet includes reproducible graphic organizers and a description/lesson ideas on how to use them (one section for each type).

What is nice about these is that they lay out what you want your kids to learn in a clear, easy to follow way. Some of the organizers are fairly free form, leaving lots of room for improvisation, and some are highly structured. These are absolutely excellent for struggling learners.

These are geared for teachers; however these can be easily adapted for home use. For example, my son comes home with vocabulary words that he must know each week. I use these organizers to help him 1) learn the spelling, 2) learn the meaning, and 3) use them in a sentence. Left to his own, he would feel lost; however several of these organizers easily adapt to helping him study this on his own.

Reading instructors will appreciate the organizers which place emphasis on writing down words that students don't know (like a log) or new vocab words from the text and inferring the meaning from the context clues.

In summary, these organizers teach important study skills that will translate into other areas of study. Highly recommended!

A must have for instructors who want to provide a variety of differentiated strategies. I am a high school reading teacher and
I can meet the vocabulary needs of my individual students without spending an infinite amount of time creating activities. These organizers work with required lists or just exploring words in text further!

This was the first great book I've read concerning aviation. With only moderate knowledge of aviation previous to reading this book, I was very pleased with the enormous amount I had learned. Though it is very informative and intended for adult readers, this is not at all a complex, hard-to-understand book. I read it a few years ago when I was about ten or eleven years old.

This book is a great resource for graphic designers looking for ideas for web site illustrations. Broad color schemes, dramatic but often simple posters many of which could be adapted as animations. A beautiful tribute to the great children's authors.

I have been really pleased with this book. It is a textbook I am using in one of my graduate classes in speech and language pathology. The book is informative, with a lot of information on each page. Anyone who is or will be involved with pre-school classes (teachers, aids, SLP's, early interventionists, reading specialists, etc.) would benefit from reading this book. There are some great suggestions for what and how to achieve a high quality pre-school. There are many very well respected researchers who have contributed to this book, from many different fields. I would highly recommend this book.

After buying "Reading Studies for Guitar" I knew that "Advanced Reading Studies for Guitar" would be a perfect companion. This second installment of reading studies covers positions 8-12. I can definitely say my playing level has been sharpened and I am now more confident about my playing abilities.

A comprehensive history of the American picturebook
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.

Truly a labor of love, Barbara Bader's history of the American picturebooks from colonial times to the nineteen seventies is essential reading for anyone interested in children's literature. Bader is particularly good about the post-WWII period when writers like Margaret Wise Brown and editors like Ursula Nordstrom started the trend of incorporating the ideas of child psychology into picturebooks. Bader seems to have known everybody who was anybody in postwar juvenile publishing it seems, and she interviewed them all for this book. The result is a fascinating social history of the children's book business as well as perceptive analysis of the books themselves. This is an important book that deserves to get back into print.

Cannot recommend this text highly enough. It covers a lot of territory and many major authors have contributed chapters within this compilation. I reference it all the time.

Sometimes these academic comps can just be an underhanded way for an Assistant Prof. to gain stature within a sub-genre. I am happy to say that in the case of Art and Society this could not be further from the truth.

A Wealth of Sage Advice
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-09-07
This book fits nicely in the "gems of wisdom" genre. The gems come from Buck's many years and vast experience as a pilot, both airline and general aviation.

It's an easy read, and you can almost imagine hearing the words come from the author's mouth in some small-airport coffee shop or sitting in a hangar under the wing of a small plane. Don't be deceived by the informal delivery, though -- Buck is talking about serious topics that affect your safety and proficiency.

If you want to learn from a veteran pilot and avoid mistakes that others have made, pick up a copy of The Art of Flying. Read it through. Then keep it around and, every now and then, pick it up again and read a chapter. The chapters are nicely "bite-sized," so you can do this using odd moments. You'll find yourself nodding your head and thinking, "Oh, yes, I want to remember that!"

This book is well worth the money -- and the time -- you'll invest in it.

This book is thorough and informative. It offers insight into contemporary art that could only otherwise be found in a dense collection of artist interviews, critiques, and social commentaries. The introductions to each section hit the nail on the head each time. Anyone who wants a deeper knowledge of what is going on around them should read this book.
Absolutely refreshing, and long-awaited.
