Splendid work that will open your mind to the reality of The Communion of the Saints!

Johnson does an outstanding job presenting a commonly overlooked aspect of our faith as a Christian community. A personal interest of mine, The Communion of Saints is a subject that I have done significant research on. I believe that Johnson brings this essential element of the Apostles Creed into the Twenty-First Century in a wonderfully illuminating way.

As I mentioned in a recent lecture I gave on the Communion of Saints, while Johnson's subheading "A Feminist Theological Reading of The Communion of Saints" may seem frightening and off-putting to some who associate the term "Feminist" with the early women's social-political movements of the 60s and 70s, one should not fear.

Johnson, arguably the leading North American Feminist Theologian, moves the reader through the history of the Communion of Saints into a paradigm for the post-modern age that leaves the so-called "first-wave feminism" in the dust to elucidate the meaning of living and praying as part of a community that extends far beyond our immediate world.

The call to "radical inclusiveness" is a theme that is presented in manner that applies a tenet of Apostolic tradition to the modern (and not-so-modern) call to social action. This book presents the history of the Communion of Saints and then answers the question: "So What?"

While some of the book is heavy with theological subjects, I still recommend this book to anyone who is looking to grow in their understanding of The Communion of Saints, our relationship within that community and/or the state of inclusive theology today.

This is a book for the person with a terminal degree and for the person without. It is an excellent work!

Will Deepen your understanding of Saints & the Holy Spirit

If you are a person into change, into contemplating your own place in the world, into deepening your personal spiritual connection to all that is, and especially to G-d, you will love this book. Yes, it deals with feminist theology, yes, 'Sr. Beth' is an excellent, careful, and clear writer -- these are obvious with a cursory glance. We all fit together, somehow, in this world of G-d's, and hardly a paragraph goes by where the reader is not encouraged to feel & believe in both the connection & the process. This work is a synthesis of very much, a disparager of very little, an emblem of hope & belief... a way... for how we are all part of the communion of saints, keepers of Wisdom, able ourselves to -be- 'friends of God, and prophets' -- and ultimately able to believe in and offer support to each other. It is simply one of the best books I have ever read.

This is not to say it's an easy read -- it is not. It is FULL of stuff, no wasted words. But, if you are a seeker of the Holy Spirit, you will be encouraged & nurtured -- and maybe, challenged.

With no previous knowledge of German (apart from Mark Twain's essay, which should be required reading) I used this book to prepare for the German reading exam (PhD), which I passed (first try).

A number of my students have also used and greatly appreciated this book; those who prefer a deductive approach to language did not find it as helpful.

The programmed approach (also found in French for Reading, by Sandberg and ??) works well at showing how sentences function in German. It is not as much help teaching you how to understand vocabulary, especially compound nouns and verbs, but this does not detract from its value.

I recommend it highly (being o.o.p. does not lower its usefulness).

Though out of print, I was lent a copy of this book by a classmate at my German studies night school and I must say, it's quite good. I wish it were in print, because the idea of the book seems to be an original one. Using frames, they provide a German sentence then the English equivalent in such a way as to built up to the chapter end whereby the entire passage is provided. The passages are typically part of literature or a philosophy work (Schweitzer, Goethe, Freud, Nietzche, etc). By the time you reach the passage, you've gone through all the sentences in various permutations. This repetition, for me, really helps my reading comprehension and I appreciate that they are not at all stingy with their English translations. In fact, every German sentence has it's English counterpart.

This book has an excellent multi-learning style approach throughout it. There are supeb graphs, charts, information boxes, and other learning tools used in the text. The target audience seems to be high school students, but if you have never studied world history before, or if your familiarity with world history is not thorough and/or recently reviewed this would be a great place to start.

The text also approaches world history from the vantage point of manifold disciplines, which serves to both eliminate and complement the often-found drudgery which has been concomitant with this subject matter in past generations.

I am studying this text along with my daughter; she is taking world history as an independent study in order to test out of it this fall and clear her schedule for other classes she would like to fit into her schedule this year. She will be a high school sophmore.

This book is awesome for students to increase their understanding of different concepts. I am using this in my classroom. Each student is on a different level, so I choose the organizer that will be best for each student. My students are learning the same concepts, but get the information on their level.

I would recommend this book to any educator or parent that wants to help increase skills for their child.

Does the work for you!

I have taken many courses on differentiation and understand that students are learning at different levels, but meeting those individual student needs on a continuous basis is nearly an impossible task. Each reading strategy or concept in the book is tiered for three groups, with an organizer to guide the students thinking at their level; introductory, intermediate, and challenging. These organizers make the impossible...possible. The similar title for writing is just as useful as the reading. Both books have helped me to meet the needs of ALL students and keep me sane. These books reside on my desk; they are in constant use!

The guitar reading workbook is a great tool for any guitar player interested in learning to read and notate music. The book starts from the very beginning with the basics and progresses through to advanced topics. I like the fact that it includes various excersises in both music notation and reading. I think the book is great and very well organized, I plan on using it for all of my students and guitar classes.
The guitar reading workbook will be a great teaching tool for any guitar instructor as well as a great learning tool for students.

Like all the little instruction books, this one has a little quote on every page. Unlike others, it is a saying of Christ. These are wonderful words upon which you can meditate, pray, or apply to your life.

I love how this book offers concrete and authentic ways to manage learning in Kindergarten. The examples of the assessments used during writing conferences and reading groups are clear and managable. It was easy for me to take her examples and utilize them in my own classroom to monitor and boost student achievement. Above all, the author's genuine love for children and belief that all children can have success shines through. You can see your own classroom being as fun and inviting as the author describes. Every Kindergarten teacher should read this book!

Works of art give joy because they are so well made.

"Works of art give joy because they are so well made." This is a paraphrase of a quote from Bill Reid, the gifted Haida sculptor who led the way for today's carvers.

This book is incredible. Every carving, every piece of art is incredibly well made (as is the book itself). If you're interestd in either New Zealand (i.e. Maori) or Northwest Coast art (i.e. totem poles), you should buy this book. The pictures alone are worth it.

A contemporary selection of works from native peoples of New Zealand and the Northwest coast

Review Date: 2006-05-22
If it's a contemporary selection of works from native peoples of New Zealand and the Northwest coast which is needed, MANAWA: PACIFIC HEARTBEAT fits the bill perfectly: it presents modern Maori and Northwest Coast art, covering the history of major exposure of modern young artists to the world and including an excellent representative sampling of their achievements in striking color photos. 31 Maori and 15 Northwest Coast artists are presented to represent over three decades of works and events around the theme. The gorgeous color photos of over sixty selected pieces created especially for MANAWA make for an exceptional presentation.
