Reading Instruction Books

Excellent book for all teachers no matter what subjects they teach. Emily's ideas work well with all types of curriculum. This book is well written, easy to follow, and the ideas represented in it are worth reading!

This book has helped me quite a bit with my early childhood degree. The information in the book is easy to find and the authors know their material.

I knew nothing of Dali before this book, and just happened to stumble upon it in the bargain section of a local bookstore. Not only is the book beautifully constructed, but it's of encyclopedia size, and in full color. For the Dali enthusiast it would make a wonderful companion, for the curious (i.e. me) an tome of endless wonder and awe and, for the vain, a beautiful coffee table decoration. Either way you rate it, this book is amazing!

This book made it here in good time. I was pleased. The book wasn't damaged when it arrived. Overall I think it was a good purchase

I attended Lin Kuzmich's conference this Spring and was really impressed with her. She is so knowledgeable, yet delivers literacy information in a very user-friendly, casual way. The book is good and has practical, useful resources you can implement immediately.

This book is a very extensive list of quick tips on fund raising for theatre and arts organization. It presents brief and informative case studies on what organizations are doing to successfully appeal to different audiences, build relationships, and raise funds. While not all of the case studies will appeal to everyone, you should be able to find some that are applicable to your situation. Don't expect this to be a "how-to" guide for audience building and fund raising, rather a good book to use if you are brain-storming on different ideas that you can use in your situation.

I believe that this was one of the greatest art books. This outstanding book displayed 59 of Hopper's greatest paintings with awesome detail and spectacular quotes. It not only showed the different ways Hopper defined and looked at life, but I could feel like I was the artist. Not only did the paintings create a perspective of life most people don't look at, but I could relate to his points of view.

This book provides a link between the results of the National Reading Panel study and literacy instruction for students who have more significant intellectual disabilities. The information provides examples of how traditional reading strategies can be adapted to meet the needs of these students.

From my personal perspective, I think this book will serve as an useful reading companion to the other reading strategy books I have reviewed so far.

As the author contends, the primary objective of this book is to help you become an independent, strategic and effective learner in your college studies.

In a nutshell, her substantial content is arranged in three stages as follows:

Introduction:
- getting to know yourself;
- getting to know your textbooks;
- getting to know your instructors;

Empowerment:
- taking notes from college textbooks;
- identifying & learning new words;
- comprehending textual material;
- extracting key information;
- recoding key information;
- preparing for & taking college level test;
- beoming a critical readers;

Refinement (with study guides):
- sample chapter from Psychology;
- sample chapter from Biology;
- sample chapter from History;
- sample chapter from Music;

Although she has provided with a bank of powerful reading & study strategies for reading comprehension, vocabulary, note taking & test taking in the empowerment stage of the book, I feel she should have also provided more reading samples & study guides from the other disciplines in her refinement stage.

For beginners, I feel she has done a great job in her introduction stage by helping readers to get acquainted, at the onset, with themselves (Know Thyself, to paraphrase Socrates), their textbooks and even their instructors. This important stage can also serve as a goal setting & time management platform for students/readers.

For readers who want to learn how to do marginal notations or annotations in their textbooks, the author provides many excellent hands-on examples. In terms of information gathering from textbooks, this is a very important skill for college students to acquire.

The author's creative concepts of using FLIP and SCORE approaches in the reading processes are interesting, as opposed to the traditional SQ3R method...even though they share many similarities.

On the whole, I have enjoyed reading - and learning from this book. To sum up, this book can serve as a useful reading companion to:

In many schools the art flexible grouping has gone the way of slide rules. This book presents a compelling argument for integrating flexible grouping into existing reading programs.

The authors offer a variety of methods for group. The methods are well explained. Samples schedules and techniques for grouping facilitate understanding of how to use the methods presented.

This book is certainly not a quick fix. The authors wisely stress the need for careful planning and implementation. Readers will, however, find themselves in possession of a useful tool for integrating flexible grouping into their instructional repertoire.
