The only critique is that the print is too small for my eyes.

An essential reference for singers and coachesReview Date: 2003-12-08
The phonetic readings of well over one hundred Russian songs and arias offer access to a repertoire that is increasingly chic and in demand, but that would probably otherwise be unapproachable for non-speakers of Russian.
Jean Piatak worked on these readings with Mme. Vitya Vronsky Babin, whose musicality and artistry are legendary. Vitya Vronsky Babin was a pianist, but she personally told me that her favorite repertoire was song repertoire. I am sure that she carefully and affectionately considered the choices concerning the diction represented in this book. Knowing that she instructed Ms. Piatak gives extra validity to these readings.

One-stop-shopping for orchestral informationReview Date: 2001-02-16
Musicians searching for practice material in reducing scores at the piano will not find it in this book, but they will find a handy reference with a sound review of orchestral history and instrumentation. Aspiring conductors will find a valuable introduction to their craft and all readers will appreciate the clarity of the text which conveys information without the baggage of elitist condescension or that chatty hand-holding which bloats many mass market "how to" or "dummies" books. Several of the score examples employ a format (found in the Norton Scores) that highlights prominent melodic lines with gray shading. This illustrates the dynamics of score reading very clearly for novices.
The chapters are as follows: 1) Introduction, 2) Types of Scores, 3) The Look of a Score, 4) Scores and Their History, 5) Reading a Score - Hearing a Score, 6) Examples for Practicing Score Reading, 7) Orchestras and Conductors, 8) Instrumentation and Score Reading: Suggestions for Further Reading.

Filled with a wealth of case studies, entertaining activities, and other aids, the book is equally a reference book as well as a textbook. There is historical documentation that shows how the teaching of reading has evolved over the years.
Although it is rather pricey, as is the case of most textbooks, it is a price of which most educators/parents should be willing to pay.
The "loss" of one star is due to some of the author's assessments of the differences between ethnic groups in regards to reading/learning styles. It is unfair to lump all of a certain minority/racial/culture group in the same based on surveys or studies of a select few.
