For both the educator and the parent

If one is preparing to enter the teaching profession and plans to teach reading, this is the book for you. If one is a parent of a struggling reader, this, too, is the book for you. The authors have put together a rather concise and rather uncomplicated read that is beneficial to the reading specialist, the classroom teacher, and the parent that wants to know about techniques, strategies, and programs available to assist in the teaching of reading.

Filled with a wealth of case studies, entertaining activities, and other aids, the book is equally a reference book as well as a textbook. There is historical documentation that shows how the teaching of reading has evolved over the years.
Although it is rather pricey, as is the case of most textbooks, it is a price of which most educators/parents should be willing to pay.

The "loss" of one star is due to some of the author's assessments of the differences between ethnic groups in regards to reading/learning styles. It is unfair to lump all of a certain minority/racial/culture group in the same based on surveys or studies of a select few.

This is a great text. It is well organized and I don't think they miss anything. I took a course that used it, and I am glad I bought the book. I will refer to it often when I am trying to figure out a plan with a student who has reading difficulties.

The only critique is that the print is too small for my eyes.

An essential reference for singers and coaches

This book is a treasure.
The phonetic readings of well over one hundred Russian songs and arias offer access to a repertoire that is increasingly chic and in demand, but that would probably otherwise be unapproachable for non-speakers of Russian.
Jean Piatak worked on these readings with Mme. Vitya Vronsky Babin, whose musicality and artistry are legendary. Vitya Vronsky Babin was a pianist, but she personally told me that her favorite repertoire was song repertoire. I am sure that she carefully and affectionately considered the choices concerning the diction represented in this book. Knowing that she instructed Ms. Piatak gives extra validity to these readings.

A Simple Start to Singing in Russian
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.

This is certainly a great guide to learning to sing in Russian. Especially helpful are the large Russian letters that enable one to clearly see each character of the Russian alphabet. The vowel sounds are not as thoroughly covered as the consonant sounds however, and this can prove troublesome for beginners. I would only recommend this book to someone who needs to review his/her Russian pronunciation.

Score Reading Book

As a Composition and Conducting major, it's a nice, well-written book which reveals a way how to you read a score while listening to it. For real Score Reading purposes ("hacking the Orchestral Score on the piano), I wouldn't recommend it so much because although it consists of excerpts, it's not practical enough because of the format. Probably di Lassus, Bach Chorales and later the "Kunst der Fuge" are still the best way to improve your reading of the clefs before you can start reading a full score using the clefs for the transposition. For everybody who's not a conducting major, it could be a very useful book as an introduction to score reading or actually score listening

One-stop-shopping for orchestral information
Helpful Votes: 23 out of 23 total.
Review Date: 2001-02-16
This book belongs in the hands of every aspiring orchestral musician, conductor, and avocational music-lover. Ambitious high-school students and conservatory undergraduates will especially appreciate the clarity and concision with which Dickreiter (through Pauly's fine translation) illuminates the labyrinth of abbreviations, symbols and page layout details for deciphering orchestral scores. Best of all, the book answers most basic questions about instrumentation (including foreign terminology, clefs and transpositions), performance practice and history, without forcing the reader to hunt down the information in several other sources.

Musicians searching for practice material in reducing scores at the piano will not find it in this book, but they will find a handy reference with a sound review of orchestral history and instrumentation. Aspiring conductors will find a valuable introduction to their craft and all readers will appreciate the clarity of the text which conveys information without the baggage of elitist condescension or that chatty hand-holding which bloats many mass market "how to" or "dummies" books. Several of the score examples employ a format (found in the Norton Scores) that highlights prominent melodic lines with gray shading. This illustrates the dynamics of score reading very clearly for novices.

The chapters are as follows: 1) Introduction, 2) Types of Scores, 3) The Look of a Score, 4) Scores and Their History, 5) Reading a Score - Hearing a Score, 6) Examples for Practicing Score Reading, 7) Orchestras and Conductors, 8) Instrumentation and Score Reading: Suggestions for Further Reading.

Presenting a model that has been successfully used in hundreds of high school classrooms, The Well-Managed Classroom: Promoting Students Through Social Skill Instruction is the collaborative effort of Theresa Connolly, Tom Dowd, Andrea Criste, Cathy Nelson, and Lisa Tobias. The Well-Managed Classroom covers student rights; the importance of building and maintaining relationships; as well as principles of behavior; effectively using praise; preventive teaching, and much, much more. A solid guide to instilling a harmonious environment that would best promote traditional learning, The Well-Managed Classroom is a welcome and commended addition to Educational Studies reference collections and classroom instruction reading lists.

To be 100% honest, as of this writing I have not finished this book, but I was put off by the fact that this book is actually based on "The Boys Town" methods. I am sure some advice will be helpful, but I think they need to state that somewhere. I know I was shocked when I opened my package! Also so far they are always referring to Boys Town and not how to use this practically in our classrooms.

This little book is loaded with images from books of different ages, all about cats. As I turned the pages, it was as if I was strolling through the history of art and literature. I found very interesting how different artists chose to depict felines through the ages, and how this changes according to each artist's backgroung and time.

This book is a very nice way to help students learn how to set up ensemble hits in a jazz setting. In my experience, students need some examples to help them start to learn how to set up a band. This book helps you to learn how to do that. I used to use Bob Moses' Drum Wisdom book for that, but recently discovered that it is out of print! This book nicely covers the technical side of set-ups, but unfortunately only does this in a swing setting. The book doesn't go over the information in other styles, though it's easily adaptable to cover such material.

This book has well selected and well reproduced paintings included. The book is not afraid to include multiple paintings of the same subject, and I think the chapter "Concentration and Repetition: Working in Series" with replicates of the Poplars, Haystacks, and Rouen Cathedral may be one of the best. I also enjoyed the photographs of Monet in his studio and of the house and garden at Giverny. The writing on Monet's life and painting is short, sometimes to a fault, such as only referring to Monet's exile during the Franco-Prussian War in 1870 in the Chronology.
