I purchased this as the required text for a Master's level course in differentiated instruction. A good balance of the theory and practice.

Every Teacher of Reading SHOULD have THIS book!

This is THE book to buy. The format is explicit and prescriptive. You know the problem? Well, here's the solution...here is what you need to do. It's that simple. This is the best book on the market TODAY that helps you know how to teach those students who are dependent, struggling readers. A must buy for any teacher, not just a K-3 teacher. High school teachers could benefit from reading this book. Once you own this text, you will not trade it, or loan it....it's a keeper!

Good Overview

This book is a great overview of theories of reading, research on biological brain research of dyslexia, and program reviews which address dyslexia and reading difficulties in general. The chapters are dense with information, but not difficult to read. The book is a little out of date now; hopefully a new edition will update some of the information.

Well-written guide to broad range of remedial reading progra

The book starts with a brief but well-written description of dyslexia and a discussion of the basics of various methods for dealing with it. Although not comprehensive, these sections of the book provide a clear overview that will equip the reader well for reading more technical, jargon-filled publications on the subject. The most valuable part of the book is Part III: Reading Programs for Individuals with Dyslexia. Here, there are descriptions of eleven different programs, from the most aggressively Orton-Gillingham (e.g. Slingerland, Alphabetic Phonics) to whole-language (Reading Recovery). The descriptions cover: What the teacher does; How the teacher is trained; What research there is on the effectiveness of the methods. This is an excellent first book for a student just starting to learn about dyslexia, and a good one to return to from time to time to put the fads and enthusiasms of the moment into perspective. (Students new to the subject should also read "Beginning to Read" by Marilyn Jager Adams.) Reviewed by Stowe Daviso

Lee Ryken offers the world of biblical scholarship a wake up call to an all too often ignored subject in church circles - the arts. the question of how exactly those seriously pursuing a life of artistic integrity melded their passion with Christ and his message - has been a tight-rope walk for the christian artist for decades. Insightful and well written, this book brings to bear a reconciliation of too-often-thought diametrically opposed disciplines into a marrage of calling and creatorship.

highly recommend to Christian Artists and Educators.

The intro lists the key doctrines related to the arts. other highlights (for this painter/art educator)include chapter 2: "What the Bible says about the Arts", ch.4: "The World of Imagination", ch.7:"What is Christian Art?". the summaries at the end of the chapters, along with the lists for further reading and bibliographies are also very valuable. readable & helpful. I appreciate the hard questions that Ryken asks, and his devotion to the arts and literature in a day that embraces trivial pop culture.

Concise Introduction to Christian Concepts of the Arts

Ryken's clear prose makes this book stand out from other introductions to the arts. The organization of concepts and examples give readers a good grasp of basic issues within specific art forms. Ryken also identifies Christian philosophies of the arts, assisting the reader to articulate his or her own philosophy through development of or comparison to the ideas in the text. I have used this text successfully with advanced high school students as well as with college students. Enjoyable reading--not dry!

A great refresher course for any teacher of Language Arts. The book uses the CLOZE technique, so you're learning as your filling in the answers (very active and involved learning). The reviews at the end of each chapter are a double check to see if you know the information presented. The pretest and posttest really assure you that you've learned something - which I did!

This book is a shear delight. Included are images that I coveted on rubber stamps that were too expensive, and now I have them all in this book. I have been looking for male images seated at a writing desk, for a scrap booking page for my son. Most of the seated men are older and quite developed in their belly region, but the portraits of Shakespeare and other writers of note, will work just find. This book overflows with great female images. Love the book and I would buy it again!

Need an illustration of a medieval woman perusing a book? A famous person of literature like William Shakespeare? An imp sitting on a stack of tomes? Or something more mundane, like an open-faced book or a bottle of ink? This book contains that and more. The quality and quantity of these charming black-and-white illustrations is as impressive as the title is self-explanatory.

Extremely thorough review of rhythm
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-03-24
This book is pretty good, but I don't know that I'll ever get through the whole thing. It only covers eighth notes and bigger, making it extrememly thorough, but also very boring to play. I got it for piano, but I don't know how helpful it really is because it only drills you on a single measure instead of two at a time, which is what a pianist would play. All in all, though, it is good for memorizing the sound of all the different ways to play eighth notes. As a precursor to this book, or in place of this book, I would recommend 'Sight-Read any Rhythm Instantly' by Mark Phillips, which goes through the whole process of how to properly read rhythm and also exposes the student to different time signatures.

Just wanted to write in and tell everyone how much this book has help me. I've always had a problem reading and playing rhythms. Mr. Arnold's book has really helped. I went to the muse-eek website and got the audio examples and playing those with the exercises has really helped. I think I'll check out the other volumes soon.

This book gives the serious student a real workout in eighth note rhythms. Personally I haven't seen anything at this level, I congradulate Muse-eek Publishing Company for putting out a book which is obviously geared to the serious student and not the lowest common denominator like most music publishers. Keep up the excellent work

Valuable for Piano Teachers

After trying several good methods for my adult students, I have centered on this one for most of them. Adults don't want to spend months or years learning to play a song. Being very "chord based," this approach allows adults to learn simple songs fairly quickly. This will probably be my first choice when I open up lessons online via webcam in the near future.

Amazing accomplishment

If I had known learning to play piano was this easy I'd have done this a long time ago. I started with this book after my teenage granddaughter used it. She learned to play a decent sounding song so fast that I was encouraged to give it a try. Wow. In less than 4 weeks (I devoted more hours to it than my granddaughter did) I am able to read, understand and play the basic sheet music herein. I've ordered lesson book 2 and can't wait to get started on it. This lesson book covers, theory, sight reading and technic in such an easy friendly manner. No stress just lots of fun and a real sense of accomplishment. I'm looking forward to the day I can play duets with my granddaughter. I'm going to play along with Christmas Carols this year instead of just listen to them. Buy into this course you'll be glad you did.

This is a great book for anyone trying to improve their sight reading. My only qualm is that there are a few mistakes in some of the rhythms. This doesn't take much away from the overall educational value of the book. I would highly recommend it.

Review Date: 2005-02-08
I have found myself picking this book up time and time again. The exercises presented are challenging; however, the feeling of accomplishment I have experienced upon mastering a particular technique is extremely rewarding. In particular, my rhythmic accuracy has increased a considerable amount, as well as my phrasing. I highly recommend this book to players who are looking to master their technique and take their skills to a more mature level.

I am so impressed by this book. It truly has it all. When teaching the 2nd grade, I used her book "Guided Reading, Making it Work." It was great too. Now, as a fourth grade teacher I am glad I found this book. It has background knowledge, implementation strategies and plenty of real-life examples that illustrate how to use the guided reading program in your intermediate classroom. Thank you for this book!

As usual, practical!

The Scholastic Teaching Strategies series has been a reliable, easy-to-use and implement set of books for new and experienced teachers wanting to make changes in their classrooms. As an upper elementary Title I teacher, I'm always on the lookout for making my teaching of reading for struggling readers more effective. There doesn't seem to be much new information out there working with this population. Research seems to suggest that if a child hasn't hooked into reading by third grade, it's lost forever. It seems that the lack of books to help these readers seems to promote that fact.

This book, however, attempts to shed some light on the concept, of bringing Guided Reading groups into the upper elementary classroom. I found the book to be very helpful in examining the role of the teacher and of the students in teaching reading. The author, Mary Schulman, draws on her years of experience, with chapters on setting up the classroom for effective literacy instruction, guidelines for forming the groups, and sample lessons scripted out.

There isn't much missing from the books, possibly other than how to tackle chapter books in these groups, which much of the kids seem to want. I found this book to offer practical ideas that I could easily bring into my classroom. I highly recommend this for anyone wondering about guided reading in the upper elementary grades!

Very Good But Not Quite Complete

Review Date: 2001-03-23
The book couldn't be better exept for one thing. There is some information lacking that should have been taught before you get to the part of the book that teaches chords. You all of a sudden come into contact with notations that you don't have a clue as to what their meaning is if you've never read music before. Dim means "diminished", but what does that mean? what does a "7" mean when it appears in the name of a chord. etc. Up until that part at the end though, I felt the book was doing a really good job.

Helpful, very easy to understand

I have to learn to play the guitar for a television project and as I was looking for a book suited for someone like me who had never even touched a guitar before, I found "Guitar Quickstart" and it is perfect! Some of the other books that I came across were way too hard to understand, but "Guitar Quickstart" brakes it down just right. It has very helpful "fill-in-the-blank" exercizes in the workbook that really makes learning the guitar fun. It's totally the type of book I was looking for! It has made me want to stick with learning the guitar after the project is over. Kudos to the author for writing such a wonderful book!!
