This book is for the weather novice who doesn't want to get a PhD in meteorology, but still wants to stay out of trouble. While most of the information about thunderstorms is available elsewhere, his section on icing was particularly valuable. I would recommend this to any pilot who seems lost about weather reports or charts. If you know your way around surface analysis charts and lifted index charts then this book might be too simple for you.

Unreserved praise!

For all pilots! I purchased this book over ten years ago and I try to reread it each spring. This book condenses need to know information into useable "bites," and makes weather interesting and understandable. You will learn things about temperature dew point relationships and many other aspects of weather and weather flying that you may never hear any other place. If you are looking for a book that will better prepare you for the dynamics of weather flying, this is one of the very best.

This is a must read book for any pilot who does serious weather flying. Dennis takes the mumbo jumbo and puts it in terms that are very easy to understand. With thirty two years of flying under my belt, this is the only book that makes practical sense of very technical issues.

Thanks,...

This book is perfectly organized to help the guitarist become comfortable with reading music and then take it up a notch to read more complex passages. It starts with rhythm patterns, teaching them in a progressive series. That acts as the foundation to start adding actual notes, which seem much more achievable once confidence has been gained on the rythmic side.
All I can say is, I have been adding the sight-reading studies to my daily practice and it works. I even caught myself ignoring the guitar tablature and going right to the written music. Now that is cool!

took the mystery out of sight-reading,..learned a lot.....

First of all, this book comes with a CD to help you all the way. You won't guess if you've learning something right, you will know by audio example and you can do this at your own pace. Perfect for the guy like me who can play guitar but has not had the chance really to read music yet and doesn't know where to start...this is your book if you are a guitarist wanting to educate yourself...

I am new to learning music, but have the desire. WHat I needed was a book that would cover the very basics and ramp up from there without insulting my inteligence. This is exactly what I got! A great book for someone who essentially knows nothing about music. It starts out with notes and scales and builds from there. The book is easy to read, has plenty of diagrams, etc, plus came with a very helpful CD so not only do you see the musical notations, but you get to hear what those notations sound like.

It won't be the last music book I buy, but it certainly is a great place to start!

I've never seen the difficult subject of learning to read music so clearly explained. If you are interested in learning to read music, and then moving beyond the basics into music theory, this is the book. Most other books that I have seen on this subject, including the are just terrible; too complicated or not clearly written. This one provides lucid writing and clear visual examples. Highly recommended!

I really hate wading through reviews on Amazon. Some folks come to wax for no reason at all. This is actually my first ever review, so here goes. This book is perfect. It's a book on learning how to read music. It starts very basic so that any Joe can learn it. Once the author gets you started with the basics of notes and rhythm, you get some music theory. It's not a hardcore theory bok, but the author does go into enough detail to get you through just about any situation you may encounter. What I think is more important toa dd is that once you're done with the book, you can go to ANY other higher level theory book and learn there. So many books simply start TOO hard for the average user. The book is very approachable and the explanations are great. I can't reccomend this one enough!

I looked up the author, who has a few other book on Amazon, and according to his website, there will be a Music Theory book for this same company -- I can only suppose it will take off where this book left off.

The book reads very clean and the many musical examples make the book a pleasure to look at (as i think written music is beautiful). There is an audio CD, which is also excellent.

I hope this helps someone get a grasp on what this book is about. I have bought a few theory type books over the years to help with my piano playing (self taught). This is simply the only book that has started at a spot where I can "jump right in". Well done!

This is a fine book that allows us to overhear conversations with those locked out of our presence. Trust is key in his understanding of the life of faith and he reads the bible, attentive to oft overlooked details to combat the reduction the bible into a morality manual, or a book of role models, or a book that demands literal interpretation. At times he neglects elements of the text that would require Christians to live their lives in a distinctive manner, but this may be what allows for the inmates to hear him.

The title of this book really sucked me in. I had only a vague idea of what it was about when I ordered it. I thought it had something to do with liberation theology and work with the marginalized. It sounded like an interesting approach.

When I began reading chapter 1, I couldn't help feeling like I had walked into the middle of a conversation. With very little preliminaries, Ekblad starts going through an explanation of how he selects topics for his jail Bible studies and the procedure he goes through in facilitating them. I was left wondering about things like why he was doing this, what he hoped to accomplish, what his underlying theology was, and so on.

Then I got to chapter 2 when he began relating actual experiences he has had with the men in Skagit County Jail and how God has touched their lives through their readings of the Bible. Wow! This stuff is dynamite! Going from chapter 1 to chapter 2 was like going from a lecture on the physics of roller coaster construction to actually riding the roller coaster.

Let me tell you, it wouldn't matter if Bob Ekblad had no writing skill whatsoever (though he actually is a pretty good writer). The stories he has to tell about God stepping into the lives of men living at our society's margins are so powerful, so eye-opening, that they completely shine on their own merits.

Seriously, buy this book. If you're put off by the idea of liberation theology, don't be. He doesn't really put forward a hardcore liberation theology. His main message is the grace of God in Jesus Christ, and in any case this book isn't about theology, it's about rubber-on-the-road practical application of the Gospel in real people's lives. This is great stuff.

Excellent!

This book is not only a description of how the author ministers to people on the margins of society, but also an explanation of his philosophy of ministry and provides a radically different perspective on the Bible in general and certain passages in particular. I'm planning to read the book again at a slower rate and look up the passages he reviews with inmates and farm workers.

A Must-read!

Reading the Bible with the Damned is gripping, even from the title. The book emerges from the work of Bob Ekblad, a jail chaplain and director of Tierra Nueva and the People's Seminary in Burlington, Washington. Ekblad examines the hermeneutical and pedagogical issues that arise from encountering the Christian scriptures with the marginalized, namely inmates and undocumented immigrants. The purpose of the book is to provide a resource for people of faith who endeavor to "bridge the gap" between the mainstream and the marginalized. Ekblad's thesis is that these two realms must learn to read and interpret the Bible together, in order to formulate a fuller and more transformative vision of the Christian faith.
The book begins with an identification of the pitfalls many mainstream readers encounter in their more traditional readings of the Bible, whereby the message of the Bible is made to support the status quo or dominant paradigm. Ekblad encourages his readers to challenge these theological assumptions by reading the Bible with those outside one's own nationality, race, gender, class, or economic status.
The rest of the book focuses on reading specific portions of the Bible in this new light. There are chapters on the Creation narrative, Cain and Abel, the Patriarchal narratives, Exodus, Isaiah, the Psalms, the Gospels, and the Pauline Epistles.
This book is the product of a class taught at the People's Seminary in conjunction with Regent College. I attended this class when it was taught last year and it proved to be the single most transformative experience of my graduate education. I walked into the class with one career plan, and walked out with another.
Bob, through his teaching and friendship, reminded me of things I had long since forgotten about the very nature and purpose of the Christian life. Ambition and achievement must always take a back seat to serving "the least of these" as though they were Christ himself. Real life happens outside in the cold, not inside a classroom. Bob is aware of this and manages to gently lead his students, sometimes literally, outside of their comfort zones, and into labor camps and back alleys.
This book reflects Bob's work, and so I recommend it as strongly as I can. Whether one is clergy or laity, newcomer or veteran of street-level ministry, this book will revolutionize and hone your skills in reading and/or teaching the Bible. It is a book for anyone who has ever wondered whether the Bible has any "good news" for those outside the dominant economic, political, social, and religious structures.

This is a fantastic book. It is intelligently written and engaging. It is far more interesting to read than, for example, Reutzel and Cooter's "Teaching Children to Read: From Basals to Books," which is stultifying by comparison. Gunning does not insult the reader's intelligence. This book is rooted in the research and, apparently, in considerable experience and thought on the author's part. Full of wise, useful, and detailed practical advice. Highly recommended.

Direct Instruction Reading is a wonderful resource for teachers, really explaining how to effectively teach reading. Parents will probably read the book and then think . . . How am I going to do this? For parents I think the best option is Funnix (a Direct Instruction program for reading on the computer) or Teach Your Child to read in 100 Easy lessons. Both are written by Siegfried Engelmann, the author of almost all the Direct Instruction program.

Direct Instruction Reading is a "must read" for any regular education or special education teacher of reading K-12. Newer teachers, frustrated because they are untrained in phonics instruction in a time when school districts are increasingly requiring them to effectively teach these skills will find this book a helpful source of reading instruction. Seasoned veteran teachers of reading who want to fine tune their instruction of both phonics and comprehension strategies will also come away with ideas and assessment that can be implemented in their classroom. Parents and school board members who have been closely following the reading debate will find this book answers many of their questions about what they should look for in effective reading instruction. Practical, research-based advice is jam-packed throughout the chapters which include sequenced sound and word lists and examples of how to incorporate content maps and other strategy guides into reading lessons. Not only do the authors specifically discuss and demonstrate how to teach phonics, how to teach vocabulary and language skills, and how to develop students' comprehension skills, but they also provide interesting and easily read chapters which discuss past and current research support for their recommendations. Direct Instruction Reading will also be valuable for middle school or high school teachers who are now expected to teach reading in addition to their subject area of science or social studies. Whenever I supervise student teachers who are expected to develop lesson plans in a content area, I have them base their lesson plans on the authors' suggestions for content area reading. The lesson plans provide such an excellent framework that that students in their classroom enthusiastically learn new vocabulary and key concepts, and the cooperating teachers are delighted with the end product. Besides presenting valuable guidance about the teaching of reading, Direct Instruction Reading also is a helpful source of information for those who have questions about Direct Instruction and what it involves. As the authors repeatedly stress throughout their book: "Reading failure can be prevented . . . by efficiently organizing instruction, carefully selecting and modifying reading material, and effectively presenting the material. Students will not only learn the reading competencies needed for success later in life, but they will also feel positive about their ability to function in society."

Direct Instruction Reading, gives away ALL the secrets of the designers of Reading Mastery, one of the most effective reading programs available today. The text gives ALL the details necessary to teach reading successfully. The text explains how to teach explicit, systematic phonics for beginning readers and why it is necessary. The text leads the reader through a comprehensive description of methods for every step in learning to read. From teaching how to sound out words, through learning irregular words, to fluent decoding and passage reading, the authors provide techniques of instruction all the way up to teaching children how to get the most from content-area textbooks. The text includes exactly the kind of information teachers need to be able to teach phonics, such as the most common sounds of letters, blends and sound combinations as well as how to teach students to blend, how to deal with irregular words, how to teach the magic "e" rule and countless other specifics. A comprehensive set of field-tested teaching scripts provide efficient and effective wording for teaching more than 36 common reading objectives - ranging the gamut from phonemic awareness skills to advanced story reading comprehension. Informed by years of teaching and supervising reading instruction this text has concrete suggestions for dealing with just about every problem a teacher might have in reading instruction- examples include how-to-tips for students who are not: blending sounds, paying attention, reading correctly, understanding vocabulary, reading with fluency, comprehending their reading, making adequate inferences, and so on. This book has been used as the text for the reading class in three universities in which I have taught. I have taught from it, and previous editions, for several years. I believe it is one of the most useful textbooks I have ever read. It truly teaches everything one needs to know about teaching reading. I give it my highest recommendation. The book provides practical knowleged and insite on what to expect when you "punch into the clouds." I now use my airplane to its maximum utility, but still have respect for the weather. I no longer cancel flights due to overcast skies. I plan accordingly, avoid the thunderstorms, and confidently shoot instrument approaches. I highly recommend this book for the instrument rated pilot who is a little bit nervous about taking their personal plane into the clouds.

This is a great book but may not be useful alone. If you are making the investment- you need to buy "Around the Reading Workshop in 180 Days" because they refer to each other and work together. Serafini describes in the two books what to work with every month and ways that he does it in ...180 days. All of the lesson plans he refers to are in "Lessons in Comprehension" so they make a great pair. Although additional resources are necessary (in my opinion) this is a great starting point to setting up a successful reading workshop. He even mentions how to correlate reading workshop and writing workshop-- very helpful!

The book has virtually no text, just a page of explanation in the beginning. (One instruction, to play music in straight and swung eighths, is vital for jazz musicians.) There is only 1 note in the text, the bass clef "e." You use the exercises in the book to develop your sense of pulse and sub-division of the beat.

I had 2 degrees and a teaching certificate in music before I ever found this book. By the time I'd finished the first 14 pages, my understanding and ability to play time was virtualy mastered.

The magic of this book is the hidden organization. I learned in education classes the value of "sequential learning" and "one complexity at a time." This book applies those principles in a masterful way. Every possible placement of quarter notes and rests are explored, line by line, in a sequential fashion. (Rest on beat 2, rest on beat 3, rest on beat 4, rest on beat 1, then 2 rests, 3 rests and so on.)

After quarter notes, the same thing is done with eighths and sixteenths, including ties. Dotted rhythms are explored. By the time you've finished the section, you have encountered every single possible rhythm.

I have my students count and then play these examples. It is a discipline and can be tiresome, but make it a game for yourself. If you want to learn to read music better, this is one "must have" book.

A Classic Text in Rhythmic Perception

Bellson and Breines have accomplished what few authors on rhythmic perception are able to do: they have managed to combine a comprehensive overview of the most commonly-occuring notations in jazz, popular and Latin music repertoire with a sense of poetic lyricism, even if the book is based on only one note. The text is systematically laid-out, progressing from simple to difficult within all possible subdivisions of 4/4, yet maintains a constant sense of swing and realistic momentum. Every line of notation easily translates into melody and there are constant surprises; there was a tremendous amount of thought and love put into this work, and every imaginable kind of notation for the same rhythm is included in the text. Makes for excellent and challenging, not to mention inspiring exploration. Thank you Louis and Gil. Bravo!

NOT just for drummers!

If you're a musician who has to worry about rhythm (which is everyone) this book is a must-read. I'm a guitarist and this has helped my rhythm playing more than any high-priced book, video or lesson out there. Louis Bellson's book forced me to view rhythm in a disciplined manner. Even after working through only 5 or 6 pages, the book paid for itself. It's got enough exercises to keep me busy for a lifetime.

Its cover may give the appearance of a sterile high-school drum major's book, but don't let its cheesy orange color (or very low price, for that matter) fool you. This is a serious rhythm book, guaranteed to help you establish a groove, make your music funkier (if that's what you're going for), and give your internal clock a well-deserved workout.

Great book to learn about rhythm.

This is a great book for bass players, as well as, drummers. It gives progressively challenging rhythm reading exercises. It gives examples using quarter-notes, eight-notes, tied rhythms, dotted rhythms, 16th-notes, etc. It presents a rhythm in a variety of ways that allow the user to see how the same musical sound can written in different ways. It is very mathmatical in its presentation. Although I was initially intimidated by the material, by working steadily,I have been able to build my confidence handling this type of material. Highly recommended.
