Reading Instruction Books

This book is a real masterpiece, it is comprehensive, elegant and clear. Whether you use it for an MBA or any other discipline, it will be a great help, as it focuses on curiosity, judgment and wisdom (qualities of mind), character, sensitivity, integrity and responsibility (qualities of the person) and the ability to apply them.

The Picture Word Inductive Model (PWIM), developed by Emily Calhoun, is being used extensively in an elementary where I work as curriculum coordinator. The teachers and students report that it's fun, engaging, and well worth the time and energy devoted to it. The expert users find that this model reveals very helpful knowledge about student learning and are able to make targeted instructional decisions as a result. Using students' own language, PWIM builds sight word acquisition, hones categorization skills, develops knowledge and use of phonics, and increases word, sentence, and paragraph comprehension, among others things. I highly recommend this useful book.

I generally loathe ed books and have found most to be pretty useless to the actual teacher in a real classroom. Not so Ms. Rapp Ruddell's book! In Mary Ellen Vogt's class at Cal State Long Beach, we had the benefit of reading this book in Galley form.

IT IS SO WORTH IT.

I don't know about the second and third edition, but this first one is GOLD! BUY IT!

I was honored to teach in the same school as Connie several years ago. I was able to experience her teaching of mini-lessons in writing as well as read-alouds. Connie is now working for the State of Florida with the Reading First program, designed to help all students raise their acheivement levels in Reading. A loss for the school, but a well deserved feather in Mrs. Dierking's hat.

If you know of Direct Instruction and the powerful research behind it, you'll know how fabulous this book is....not only b/c it's DI, but because it's written by some of the best of the best. If you don't have any knowledge or experience with Direct Instruction or it's programs....imagine this....the authors of this book are delineating the best strategies for teaching your students so that the information is communicated clearly and explicitly....no guessing ever necessary. Now take into consideration that the same people are YOUR teachers via this text. It's VERY well written and easy to use. It does take some time to sit down and read, (no way around that) BUT not a single word is wasted. They tell you what to do, why to do it, and how to do it and then provide very nice examples. Buy this book!

great, learned reading professional. Every reading teacher should read Dunn's material. I have recently discovered Dunn and appreciate the level of expertise, not outdated at all.

Very good textbook. The authors offer practical suggestion as well as theory. Good mixture of both. I have used some of their suggestions and methods in class with good results. I recommend this book to anyone interested in integrating reading and writing into their curriculum, or to anyone interested in promoting reading and writing.

For teachers who are wanting to acquire some great ideas using technology and children's literature, this book is the greatest. I have tried two or three of the author's activities already, and directions were very clear, and the activities were successful. I especially liked her choices of literature, and have found that an activity may say for grade two or three, but were easily adaptable to my sixth grade. The chapters cover all areas of the reading curriculum from vocabulary to genre, and even the new "Mosaic of Thought" reading comprehension strategies are included. It got me connected to E-Pals, and was the springboard for other ideas. There are wonderful reproducible pages as well. Well Done!!!

Dr. Mary Howard guides the viewer through the highlights of recent research about literacy development, and ideas for creating a rich learning environment focused on improving reading and writing skills daily. Especially emphasizing practical strategies that can be implemented with relatively little preparation, The Ten Brains of Learning is an excellent wealth of suggestions ideal for both public school teachers and homeschoolers.
