Although Bob Mathias: Across the Fields of Gold will not be a big threat to win any Pulitzer Prize, I thoroughly enjoyed it's charm and always felt good every time I picked it up. This story is a sleeper, not in a boring way, but in the fact that Bob Mathias is really one of the great "stories" of the 20th Century. It just may be a sleeping giant!

This is a very enjoyable book. Great story, great pictures.

I just want to say that I very much enjoyed reading such a positive sports story. This book will be a terrific one for young people in that they can see that sports stars are not just self-centered, selfish individuals. You don't have to be an athlete to like this book. It's fun and inspiring.

It is truly amazing that one person could have done so many things in his life. The book is interesting, funny, and inspiring. The book was a gift to me from my son (after he read it!) and we have had some nice disscussions about what it was like when Mathias did all these heroics and what it is like now in this country. I like the book too because it gives the reader hope.

We have had this wonderful book - collection of games since it first appeared in 1990 (well before amazon.com). We are ordering another for our sons who are away at college and requested it to share with their friends at their apartment. Does that tell you anything?

This book is a great collection of board games from around the world, with easy to understand instructions, and all the peices to play. The board games are all multileveled but easy to play, and all of games are fun. The pages are all heavy laminated board, with a sturdy wire binding. The pieces are glass with a carrying case attached. The only problem I had was the carrying case tearing. All in all, a great buy.

AWESOME! Comes with EVERYTHING YOU NEED!

So far all of the games have been a blast and I find myself playing them over and over! I'd reccomend this book to anyone that loves games!

This is a classic Klutz book, one of their earliest, and it's wonderful! A perfect way to occupy your kids in the backseat or on an airplane; it's extremely portable and all you'll need is a flat surface for playing.

It's not just for kids, though! Instead of lugging around 3 or 4 different travel editions of games, why not just grab this book and you'll have 15 games in one in a lightweight and easy to carry format.

I bought this book because I am considering breeding cats a later point and I wanted to find out a little bit of what it involves. This book was really great at going through the basics and details of showing, breeding and running a cattery. And, not only that, but it's actually enjoyable to read. I highly recommend this book.

There is a reason that people are willing to pay $150+ for the collectible book that is out of print. Luckily my fiance and I won it at a local cat show that had a raffle. We had no idea it was worth so much at the time, but devoured it and thought it was excellent.

This book is nearly a complete resource for all breeders, if I could choose only one cat book to keep this would be the one.

It is well written, thought-out, and VERY informative. Any question you have about breeding is answered here. It is simply the best cat breeding book I have ever read.

This is a wonderful book...a must have!

Re: "What do you love": There is nothing wrong with breeding beautiful purebred cats or dogs... If people raised and loved each OTHER right there would be no need for shelters. If children are taught from a young age to love and respect each other then compassion for ALL living things will naturally follow. I believe good, honest breeders are the perfect example of that! They take on great responsibility with endless love, devotion and compassion.

This is a well done book. A new version with color photos would be a bit more helpful, but for someone considering breeding it's a must, and even for a more seasoned breeder it's a good brush up. I take it out every time I have a litter. As an aside, the between chapter "cat/people" jokes make it an ejoyable read. Some of the references are a little outdated, but the material is not; some things don't change that much. Breeding cats is one of those, highly recommend.

Visual and unique in at least one respect
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-10-30
I recently purchased the Bridge Player's Bible for my wife, who is diving back into bridge after being away for some years. In looking through bridge book after book I found few that weren't system-specific that had much depth. There is also a vast body of instructional bridge literature that covers actual hands from tournament play. That's helpful to the expert and up-to-date player, but not appropriate to a newer player or someone just coming back who needs a refresh on the basics. I also looked into software, but found that most bridge software hasn't been kept up-to-date or is poorly designed.

I immediately liked several things about the Bridge Player's Bible. First is the format. This is a fat, ringbound book that LAYS FLAT when you open it. In other words, you can use it as reference at your elbow in practice play and you will still be able to hold your cards. Ever try to juggle a hand and a conventionally-bound book? One or the other will go flying eventually. This format also lends itself to detailed study of individual pages/topics as well as discussion, as you can spin the book 'round to someone else, set is aside briefly, or otherwise manipulate it without losing your place.

The second thing I really liked, and that is unique, is that the majority of the bidding-related instruction pages show all of the bids, but only shows you YOUR hand, not all hands! Thus, you get the view you actually have in play. The typical approach showing all hands is simply overwhelming for a beginner and, when faced with only his own in actual play, has trouble making the transition. I think this is an excellent approach. Naturally, there is more detailed content showing all hands later in the volume as well.

The "visual" in the title refers to the easy-on-the-eyes graphics format. Illustrations are crisp, just the right size, and readability is high. The last item is often a failing of bridge books because of over-use of bridge notation. This book does not read like a book of abbreviations.

Written by a well-known bridge teacher and author who is also a tournament winner, this is a superb basics book that sets the reader up well for more advanced study.

I don't play bridge. My mother, who just turned 80, started playing a few weeks ago. She was studying these handouts that she got from the church's bridge club. I felt she needed a good reference book, with clear illustrations. English is not her first language, and I didn't want something too complicated and not easy to understand. Needless to say, she LOVES this book. Best gift I could have given her. People that have been playing a long time are quite impressed how fast she is learning the game and becoming an accomplished player in just a few weeks. If you're a beginner or advanced player, this book is a must have for your library. Or if you know someone who likes to play, this book will make a Great gift too!

The Bridge Player's Bible is a great reference source for the beginning to intermediate bridge player. The book is covers both bidding and the play of the hand. Hundreds of scenarios are covered, ranging from the most basic concepts like a preemptive three bid to more complicated concepts such as numerous types of squeeze plays.

The book is very readable. Each page has two or three subsections, complete with very colorful illustrations and examples. Not only will most players benefit from reading the book from cover to cover, but the bible will continue to be a resource to check on your play and learn how various situations should have been played.

Five stars.

When I was a young boy 50 years ago, a person in the next town from us found $5,000 in the back of a framed piece of artwork. That was huge news and for the next few years you better believe that my friends and I looked everywhere for hidden treasures. Of course we did find our share of interesting things. I can still remember finding a gold coin in between the cracks of my front porch steps and I carried it with me for all these years until I recently gave to my grandson. I have also been very interested in the life and times of Captain Kidd. He led an amazing life and there is a lot of facts about his burying many treasures over many years. Although the author doesn't give much detail at this point in time, the entire Kidd adventure over many generations must have been very exciting. I am looking forward to playing and winning the treasure.

This is a great book for everyone to start searching for buried treasure because there is still many millions of dollars hidden all over America from the last 300 years. I bought a metal detector about 17 years ago, and it has given me a lot of relaxing times not to mention all the jewelry, coins and occasional old bottle caps that I have found. Treasure seeking is such a wonderful hobby and you can actually be very successful with a little work. That's why I love this book. The research is not difficult and the reward is very high. You are not competing against others, just yourself and time. I know if I give it my best effort, I will do very well. The questions are fun and I really like the categories. I would recommend this book to anyone. Go for the gold.

It has been a long time since I was in the library (I think it was high school). I thought the internet would provide me with most of my needs now but I was amazed at how much I was missing. This is a fun book that really has gotten me involved. I have been down to the local library about 5 times now and many of the answers to the 100 questions can be found there. I also like the combination of different types of information that is needed. I love mysteries and what can be better than an actual 300 year old mystery? Puzzles have always intrigued me and I know that this game can be solved. I have a sister living in another state and she was able to identify some information that was really close to her. It seems like a team game and I am hooked. No more lotteries or bingos for me. I want to earn this money and with a little luck and ingenuity, I will. Of course it is not a million dollars, but overall it seems to offer more value because you actually have to work for it. I can't wait to finish all the questions and put the clues together. I wonder where it will lead me in America? Digging up a treasure box is worth the time and effort.

The Better Masquerade!

Review Date: 2004-02-26
I was an original treasure hunter of the story of Masquerade. I started the game about a year after it was determined that there was an actual treasure hidden. I remember thinking that I had all the information that I needed to find the golden hare. I spent dozens of hours researching and trying to break codes. To tell you the truth, Masquerade was beautifully crafted but when it came down to it, it was both difficult and confusing. This new Buried Treasure Game is hands-down 100 times better. The cool thing is that you don't need to understand elusive cryptograms as in most of the treasure hunts. The questions and clues are very straight forward and the author is right on target when he states that anyone can solve this puzzle. If you like games, puzzles or mysteries, you need to get this book.

You are going to love this book despite if you are a golf lover or not. It's the story of some of Pete Dye best golf courses described in a chapter base. Those who know Pete will enjoy the book since it is like talking to him in person because of the simplicity of the words chosen and the graphical description that he makes of how each course was conceived.

The story of the famous island green 17th at the Stadium Course at TPC is one of a kind. I particularly enjoy the story of "Teeth of the Dog", a course that could hardly be replicated in history since it was practically built by hand decades ago at Casa de Campo in the Dominican Republic. It is not only the best Golf Course in the Caribbean -according to Golf Digest and many other publications- but also the birthplace of golf in the DR at this enchanted destination. I consider this course as the "Prima Donna" of the Caribbean and one of the top 20 in any most play list. I hope that in a next edition he could also include one of his most recent courses "Dye Fore" also at this destination which I partially saw in the book Caribbean Architecture: Exclusive Designs by Gianfranco Fini in Marina Casa de Campo and has a breathtaking view all over the Chavon Cannon, the Casa de Campo Marina and, of course, the Caribbean Sea.

Pete's book will help you understand why there is such connection between the player and his courses, how he makes it happened and best of all the anecdotes behind the creation of each one of them. This book is a keeper and it rating is 5 out 5 starts with any doubts. The pictures are touching; the text is like talking to Pete himself and; is a most for any golf aficionado.

Books by golf architects tend to be on the dull side for most people. They don't tell you a story of their development as architects, or how their courses evolved during the design phase, but just seem to begin and end with "see, wasn't this brilliant?"

Pete Dye is something of a mystery to many. His designs are "unique", which can be bad or good for most people. Where did his ideas come from? What influences him the most? What stories are behind his greatest feats?

In this one book, we get pleanty of answers, all in a tale that feels like you are sitting down and listening to it as it is being told. Even golfers tend to think course architecture is a dull subject, but hopefully this will change a few minds. Architecture isn't some great mysterious practice. It is an art, and the artist is often times less seperated from us than we care to imagine.

Pete Dye isn't out to get you.

Review Date: 2000-01-26
Some think Pete Dye's golf courses are tricky or too hard. The courses Pete designs are built to be fair but punnishing for the right reasons. Played right, Pete's courses offer memorable rounds to the golfer. Now, it's not Pete who designs the course but a strong team of Pete, his wife Alice and his sons Perry and P.B. (architects in their own right) as well as the site managers and crews that are hired to do the building.

You'll learn that Pete designs courses on a sheet of paper and this is where his skills lie - understanding the land offered for the course and knowing how the wind and terrain will match in creating a great experience. Courses like PGA West, TPC Stadium (Sawgrass), The Pete Dye Club, Harbour Town and many others are discussed. One chapter per course.

Pete talks to you in this book. It's not an interview but it is presented as if Pete is telling you his life's story.

For a golfer looking for lessons, these are a different kind of lesson - from the eyes of a designer (and historically gifted golfer too). You will play better golf after you read this.

When you play a Pete Dye course, you'll remember Pete's words and how Alice was a main contributor to the design you're playing.

When I read Cassandra Dixon's "playbook" on how to beat a player at his own game I was relieved to discover that this wasn't yet another book bashing brothers. It's an enjoyable little book that is not a chore to read. It's light, but to the point, and although it is in some instances humorous it speaks seriously to today's woman on how to navigate through the nonsense to either make it happen with the man they presently have or make it happen the way it should happen when Mr. Right comes along. I have recommended it to both men and women alike.

Ms.Dixon appears to be on the right trail in her delightful yet thought provoking essay. As a police officer with two daughters her work speaks to the young adults of today's world in the street language that they understand. It is not clinical nor is she trying to dazzle anyone with big words. Well done Ms. Dixon and thank you.

This book is a joy of patterns that are new and different. Not the same old afgan type sweaters and blankets.

I couldn't decide which one to make first.

Beautiful designs, actually wearable!

I was looking for a pattern for a little girl's crocheted dress, and found the perfect one and more in Candy Crochet. The designs are GORGEOUS. Some (ok most) crochet clothing seems cheesy, which is why I've stuck to blankets in the past, but these are some seriously wearable designs, and just amazingly beautiful. Plenty of designs for boys too. The instructions are excellent, and the photographs of the finished products are helpful.

Too Cute!!!

I love this book! So many cute things for babies and toddlers--girls and boys! The first thing I made I used the yarn used/shown in the book, but I would suggest using more readily available, less expensive yarn when able. I had to order the shown yarn via the internet as it was the only place I could find it, and it was very costly.

Add this one to your library.

I have made a number of items from this book - the granny square hat with earflaps and the matching vest, a cardigan (I think you call it a jacket in America), and two dresses. I always find Candi Jensen's patterns are completely accurate and reliable, and the finished item looks EXACTLY like the picture in the book. The guages are spot on and as I am in Australia, I can't always find her recommended yarn but have never had a problem with substituting - you just must make the time to do a couple of swatches to get the guage right. I would rate myself as an experienced crocheter, but I have used her patterns when teaching friends how to crochet and one friend made the cute little boys striped t-shirt and another friend made one of the simpler boy's vests and they also did very well and were thrilled with the results. So if you want a book that is easy to follow and offers plenty of patterns to choose from from beginners to advanced, this is the book for you. The selection of truly adorable outfits are outstanding, and the baby blankets are just fantastic. I have alot of crochet books for children and this is by far my favourite. Will suit you for both boys or girls - some of the best corchet patterns for boys I have seen, and the girls dresses are really pretty.
