A Great Book For Pokemon Fans Of All Ages

I am a 13 year old and I am extremely hooked on pokemon, and this book is a great deal for all you parents who feel that it is too costly, because it IS worth it. I know that many of you reading this that have children are kind of lost when it comes to the world of pokemon, I know because my parents are, well, if you want to learn more about the "pocket monsters" then this strategy guide is a great idea!

Here are some of the most rewarding things you wil find in "Pokemon Master Pokedex".

I found that this book was very helpful in giving a well informed description on all 251 pokemon, excluding the mysterious Celebi.

It was very well organized giving info on almost every aspect of pokemon you can imagine.

I found this book to be helpful in many areas of gameplay that were difficult to me, and the breeding section helped me catch and raise many new and different pokemon.

Unlike other strategy guides, this one gives an in-depth review and is one of the most detailed guides, in my opinion, ever written.

Perhaps the best part of this is the battle chart, giving you info on what type of pokemon is dominant against another, giving info on every type, from grass, to fire, to electric, to steel, this book is the best!

Excellent guide (and a learning tool to boot!)

Complete, easy-to-follow, well-organized. The two Prima Guides credited to Elizabeth Hollinger and James Ratkos, ("Pokemon Master Pokedex" and the "Pokemon Gold & Silver" Strategy Guide), are in a separate class from the other Prima Guides, which are visually eye-catching, but less complete and harder to follow. (I have not yet seen Elizabeth Hollinger's "Crystal" Strategy Guide.) **PARENTS**: The Prima Guides are EXCELLENT learning tools, teaching children how to use reference materials independently. When my son was younger, I would read the instructions to him as he went along. Now an avid reader, my 7-year-old flips back and forth between his Prima Guides, plotting strategy, discovering information, confirming what he suspects to be true. EXCELLENT!!!

I liked this book because it really helps a lot. If you have to go on the internet to find Pokemon answers here is your guide! If you spend a lot of time on the computer to look for info on Pokemon this would be a good book! It has more Information than the Internet.

This book is about the mice in Mr. Brice's home and what they do. It teaches the kids about so many different things like counting, alphabet, measuring, colors, telling time, and so many other things. The age level would probably be around the age of eight at the most that they would learn something, any older they would probably just find the pop ups and pictures amusing. I think the book was excellent for children and I think any child who reads this will enjoy it and learn.

So much so, in fact, that we are now purchasing our third copy. Each of our previous copies has held up remarkably well considering how well-loved they were, but as with all books with moving pieces, eventually you need to reinvest. My son, now five, adored this. The page that introduces you to the 26 mice in Mr. Brice's house was a perennial favorite for him and taught him phonics as well as being just plain fun. Your child will get exposure to opposites, reasoning and problem solving, and to many other great skills, all while having a blast with this book. Well worth the investment, even the third time around (in fact, I'm counting on it keeping my two-year-old daughter occupied on a six-hour flight!).

a book of courage and conviction

Review Date: 2007-09-11
This is a book written with courage and conviction. It addresses the potential for harm in the supervisory experience in a way that raises awareness of this dynamic, and names the experience and resultant trauma for those who have been mistreated in these important and powerful relationships. Our human desire to possess certainty, which is illusion at best, is part of what fuels these abuses of power. This book brings such issues to light, using both personal story and professional, theoretical understanding. It will be helpful to anyone in any role of the supervisory relationship.

A non-professional perspective

Review Date: 2007-07-02
In the model of corporate whistle blowing, Richard Raubolt tells his story of psychoanalytic training; exposing abuses of power, authority, status and control. In Power Games, he brings together respected analysts who weave a pattern of similar training experiences told with personal angst along with professional theory. Together, they identify the areas of training abuse and propose an alternative method of training that incorporates democratic principles of empathy, and respect for subjective experiences. This is a must read for individuals, like me, who are outside of the professional community of clinical psychotherapy. With an "insider's" help, the shroud is removed and we begin to understand the inner workings of this mental health profession. Collectively we should support the evolution of training practices that will inevitably develop therapists with greater self-understanding, knowledge and a voice of their own.

What an awesome book!

Review Date: 2007-06-04
Richard Raubolt has authored a unique book. The perspectives of the prominent contributors to the book regarding the potential for abuse in psychotherapeutic training and supervision are diverse and eye-opening. The pitfalls of ego and authoritarian teaching on the part of trainers can be devastating and demeaning to potentially talented students of psychotherapy. Dr. Raubolt's courage in his documentation of his own toxic experience in clinical supervision is to be commended. He demonstrates in a very personal and powerful way, the potential for the misuse of power in the very institutions that are mandated to educate and support clinical excellence. This book is well written, informative and boldly honest. It is a "must read" for anyone that is involved in training; educators and students alike.

An Original, Brave Book!
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2007-05-17
This is an original, brave book, which does what so many mental health books fail to do: it is unflinchingly honest and personal. Most books on psychotherapy discuss the dynamics of the patient or patients in intricate detail in order to support the author's or authors' version of "Truth"or at least what has been defined as Truth by instructors, supervisors and training analysts. The person of the therapist is homogenized and relegated to a "Stepford" professional existence in far too many training programs. As a result, both psychoanalysis and good writing are dying.
Well, this is not the case in this refreshing and frank discussion of training. While a number of theories are presented that are well articulated they follow rather than diminish the deeply personal experiences of those seeking advanced training and supervision. Complex, ornate and rarified theoretical nuances are not allowed to interfere with descriptions of effective, respectful and democratic training.
Senior supervisors, instructors and training analysts should be among the first to read this book. Candidates may also do well to study the experiences of other professionals before selecting a program of training. Honesty and learning go together best when done hand in hand for both student and teacher. -Dr. Becki J. Telford

Exploring the Underbelly

Review Date: 2007-05-16
In paper after varied, interesting paper, this book stitches together a picture of the painful underbelly of life in psychoanalytic institutes. Even where the best and brightest gather at the pinnacle of mental health thought and treatment, power corrupts as deftly and unconsciously as it does anywhere else in the human species.
For all our scholarship and dedication and aspirations to facilitate healing insight in our patients, it turns out that we have trouble walking our talk with each other. And worse yet, our candiates develop in our shadows.
As Raubolt demonstrates in this relevant and riveting collection of psychoanalytic experience, at least we have the wherewithal to turn an
analytic eye to our own fragility and our possibilities for reform and redepmtion. Both 'cult' and 'culture,' after all, derive from 'cultivation' ---of our own human soil, in this case. Luckily, we keep on tilling, often with humor, courage, resolve. This book speaks deeply to the task before us.

As a fan of Will Shortz's other puzzle books I was eager to try the puzzles in this volume. There is a good variety ranging from fairly easy to extremely challenging puzzles. The topics are varied with both puzzles and answers presented in an easy to use format. Many puzzle books do not provide adequate space to properly fill in your answers but this book does.

Puzzles, But No Tricks

If you listen to Will Shortz on Sunday's Weekend Edition, you know what kind of puzzles are in this volume. Half the puzzles are of the type that he conducts with a call-in listener. This usually involves a series of word puzzles with short answers you can come up with on the spot. The other half of the puzzles in The Puzzlemaster Presents are of the sort that he leaves us with to solve during the week. They are harder and have one correct answer.

The first type of puzzle is fun, but the second type is my favorite because you usually have to do these in your head. I like to keep one or two in mind for occasions like being stuck in traffic or standing in line. They really make the time fly and you don't need pencil and paper. I find they are also great if you have trouble getting to sleep. Concentrating on a tricky word puzzle or arithmetic calculation sure keeps your mind from wandering all over the place.

And don't look for clever tricks with these puzzles. One thing about Will Shortz is that even though he loves puzzles, he is scrupulously fair. He gives you all the information you will need to solve each problem.

This book was great for us as beginner weavers. A loom was given to us - all in pieces. This book has lots of information and pictures and is an excellent guide for us "beginner weavers".

This book is an ABSOLUTE MUST for a rag rug weaver. It is the best book I've found yet that describes not only the art of weaving rag rugs but also tries to give an historical account of looms that were made. I used this book as a reference when I bought an used loom. Since the labeling was missing on the loom, the previous owner could not identify what kind of loom she was selling. I was able to not only identify the loom, but I knew from this book that the type of loom I bought was appropriate for rag rug weaving. If you want to learn rag rug weaving, this is the book to get!

I have bought several copies of this book. It is just so useful to give to someone I am teaching to crochet. The pictures are super clear and they can use them to remind themselves of the stitches. Also the projects are very well written up and pictured and help the learner to progress in skills and the projects are not super super boring. Excellent resource for learning how to write RenderMan shaders
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-05-13
The RenderMan Shading Language Guide is an excellent resource. It contains numerous examples of shader code, to help get you started with writing your own shaders. I was happy to see the robust section on illumination models, with some sl code provided for most of them. I found the section that had common functions (like gamma() and remap()) very helpful, and appreciated the disscussion on more sophisticated components of the shading language (like subsurface scattering and global illumination). In addition, for the user who is new to the process of writing and compiling shaders, a number of pages are devoted to explaining how to achieve these goals. All in all, I would highly recommend this book to any user who wants to learn how to write his/her own RenderMan shaders.

A Complete Crash Course!

Review Date: 2008-02-24
I have read many technical manuals relating to the 3D Animation and Visual Effects industries, and I can honestly say that this is easily one of the best available.

Given the limited library of Renderman books, I'd call this an absolute must have for any Lighting/Rendering/Shader TD, or any artist or technical director involved in the look development and shot finaling pipelines.

Even if you haven't yet worked within a Renderman pipeline, this is the perfect publication to introduce you to, and bring you up to speed in, the Renderman Shading Language (RSL).

I've found that the majority of technical manuals suffer from a number of common flaws:

1. The information is presented chaotically, and with minimal use of examples or descriptions, resulting in a publication that would readable only by those that already know everything it has to teach.

2. The information is presented so laboriously that what should take a paragraph instead takes up three chapters.

The Renderman Shading Language Guide is perfectly paced for beginners and intermediate users alike, and indeed when I showed the book to a couple of highly experienced Renderman TDs, they were surprised by the sheer volume of information and ordered copies for themselves.

Everything is presented in short blocks with an easily readable description, examples, shortcuts and conclusions. There is no unecessarily complicated geek speek, and neither is the reader treated like a 4 year old.

Even though I barely remember my high school math, and in the most flattering estimation I'd be considered a competent beginner when it comes to the math involved in RSL, I found the examples relatively easy to follow for the most part. And in those parts where the math went well over my head, I found the simple descriptions and concise, well explained instructions to be all I needed to quickly understand the topic.

From cover to cover this book is crammed full of useful information. There is no wastage of space in these pages. It seems that every conceivable question is answered - every possible topic covered from introduction to an advanced level of understanding and a practical and immmediately useful conclusion.

And at the price? This book is a steal.

One very minor complaint I would make is in regards to the occasional typographical error. An equation or two is printed with "?" in place of "*" or another symbol, and there are a few spelling and grammatical errors. But as I said, it is a minor complaint.

Also, I would have liked to have seen more complete shader examples demonstrated in a step-by-step process, as while this book is overflowing with informative mini-tutorials, it all seems a little incongruous. It would have been good to see a few more examples where the information was brought together in real-world ways to create some amazing completed shaders. Perhaps in a sequel? ;)

All in all, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, from an industry Lead Lighting TD.

9.5/10

Practical and methodical approach
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-10-17
This book presents a well organized approach to shader writing. It is focused on practical advice and application that a beginner can use in the industry. An example would be the chapter on setting up the development environment, things like which were not the focus of Advanced Renderman. The technical content has been diluted to expand the readership-I think antialiasing is covered better in Advanced Renderman. In this book that chapter comes at the end. Note also that this is a shading book, so don't expect topics like procedural geometry creation or hair or fur DSOs or level of detail, though there is a one paragraph reference to deep shadow maps on page 239.

The book also does a good job in covering raytracing and global illumination, an area that has seen changes in PRMan since Advanced Renderman was written. How to use shadow maps is covered well too.

One issue is that the code is not included, I hope I find it on the website. Typing in hundreds of Halton sequence shader number samples does not sound very appealing.
Giving it a 5 overall because of its practical, industry focused advice. Technical content wise it would rate a 4.

I caught wind that this book was coming out well before it actually came out and could hardly contain my excitement. I had it ordered before it was even off the press.

Let's face it, trying to learn Renderman online is like trying to ride a bike with a flat tire. You can go, but not very fast or very far. I own several other renderman books but found them to be a bit out of date and lacking in areas. Since leaving school and entering into the industry I had actually been considering writing a Renderman book myself. I am glad to say that now I don't have to!

I have been enjoying my copy of the book since december of last year. I admit that I was thrown off by all the refrences to the accompanying cd, as well as a few typos throughout. I was overjoyed however to find the website today! This is the book that I have needed for a long time. It is well worth what you pay for it.

Being able to comprehend the amount of time AND talent involved by many of these women from 100+ years ago is overwhelming at times. I am enjoying work on Sylvia's Bridal Sampler.

After reading the Elm Creek Stories. I have been inspired to start a quilt. All I need is the time. The Projects are as intricate or simple as you would what them. I think I well pick simple to Medium and chose my own colors. The Quilter's Homecoming: An Elm Creek Quilts NovelThe Quilter's Legacy: An Elm Creek Quilts NovelAn Elm Creek Quilts Sampler: The First Three Novels in the Popular Series (Elm Creek Quilters Novels)

If you've read the novels you will find this book of special interest. It shows examples and gives instructions for some of the mentioned quilts. If you are a quilter you will have been looking forward to this book. Hapy Quilting!!!

I especially enjoyed memories of the delightful Elm Creek books intermixed with the patterns for the quilts from those books! It was like enjoying the stories all over again.

One incredibly detailed fantasy role playing game. There are rules and tables and charts and detail and all other sorts of stuff out the wazoo, for this one.

Not for those that just want your quick and dirty and fast type of action resolution or game.

The best FRP system there is!

I have been playing Rolemaster system for about 17 years. It is the game system that I prefer as hands down the best (I started out on D&D). Iron Crown (ICE) has since updated the game system to what they call Rolemaster Standard System or Rolemaster Fantasy Roleplaying, but the group that I game with still uses the materials from the Rolemaster Second Edition (1994). What makes it such a great game system? 1) Because you can account for any game situation. The manuever charts alone add the dimension of allowing a PC to attempt anything. It's up to the gamemaster to assign a level of difficulty and any other mod's he sees fit to the situation. 2) Character development is comprehensive. The ability to create unique characters with skills of their choosing is both fun and rewarding. 3) The Arms/Combat and Spell user systems add variety to the gameplay. Yes, keeping track of some things can be tedious if you let them. Our group made some slight modifications to the combat system (our house rules) that quickened the gameplay, but at the same time did not take anything away from what the system has to offer. As a base system, Rolemaster can't be beat. My experience is with the 2nd Edition. If you take the time to get the hang of this system (I also recommend that you get the Rolemaster Companions for numerous other professions, spell lists, optional rules, etc.), you will be rewarded with a rich and detailed playing environment.

A great role-playing game system!

This is one of the best role-playing systems I've ever played. Although it does have a lot of paperwork, it gives great freedom in terms of the creation of worlds and, along with its companions, covers *every* possibility for players.

The best FRPG. It is very different from the storyteller style games (such as Vampire & Mage from White Wolf) but this does not make it worse. It is balanced, with lasting appeal and by far the best hand to hand combat system of any game. The magic system is superb almost as good as ars magica. However rather than try to use the many companions get the standard system - the new rules are better integrated and balanced. If you dont need the extra complexity then the boxed set is all you really need.

However never, ever create a frenzied halfling warrior monk with Martial Arts Throws - its just not on :)

P.S. The martial arts system is head and shoulders above other systems.

If "1d6 & you're dead!" is not your style . . .

One of the most open ended systems alive. Creativity, storytelling, art, gore, this is the one. Iron Crown Enterprises also created MERP (Middle Earth Role Playing) with similar rules in the true spirit of J.R.R. Tolken's the hobbit (w/lots of good references for your Tolken research). These materials however, are for adults, as effort is needed to read, digest and present a game that is both acceptable and enjoyable. Great for a collectors item.
