Addressing the Whole Person, Not Just the Voice
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2000-01-28
Mr. Freer's book is unique in that it succeeds in addressing the person behind the student and not just treating them as only a voice to be shaped. Mr. Freer's love for his topic is evident in his writing, and he clearly shows his care in making sure that the instructor takes every opportunity to encourage their students while still addressing the more technical aspects of teaching this level of choir.

How-to guide for educators in applying for grants
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2004-11-29
Browning gained her lengthy experience in grant-writing mostly in the field of education aiding school systems to obtain grants for various purposes. The three preliminary questions one has to ask before pursuing specific grants are where is the money? what format does the funding agency require for applying for a grant? and thirdly, just what has to be written to attract serious interest and give one a good chance of getting the grant? Then Browning elaborates on these basics in a user-friendly style advising grant applicants how to follow through on the process of identifying, assessing, and applying for the particular grant. A to-the-point handbook worth the attention of anyone involved in the competitive task of seeking a grant.

An Exceptional Talent
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-11-19
This book is worth the small price for Chapter 6 alone, "There is a Tide..." which contains exceptional descriptions and descriptors of a Southern spring.

Viola Goode Liddell is a gift. She describes the times in which she lived--the depression era South, Alabama in particuar--with rare talent. In addition to her descriptions and memories of small and seemingly insignificant details that mesh out her stories and give them breath, life and reality, she mixes the humor and pathos of life with a deft, but appropriate touch...

This book is true, an autobiographical look at the life and hard times of a grass widow teacher--grass widow being a woman who has voluntarily left her husband as compared to a sod widow, a woman who has buried her husband--in the hard depresssion times of rural Alabama.

Some may view her as an orginal women's libber, but she was just a good woman escaping a bad situation, doing the best she can do...it makes it nice and even more readable that this story has a good, though not perfect, ending.

Viola Goode Liddell deserves a place along side great Southern Ladies and great Southern Writers. This is not her best, that honor belongs to either "A Place of Springs," or "With a Southern Accent," but this book is well worth the price and short time it will take to read and enjoy it.

If you enjoy true Epics, then you are in store for a fantastic analogy for educational leaders. The book takes Joseph Campbell's Hero Cycle and uses it as a guide for leaders. I enjoyed the book. It was a pleasant and enlightening read.

I'll admit that when I first read this book in college (it was a required text) I hated it. But there was so much information in it that I find myself constantly referring to it. I have really come to treasure this book. As an education major in college, this is a great reference book.

A good text to see what was going on in the early 1900's in music education. It should be supplemented with another, more comprehensive text, however. I recommend Mark's text.

Inspirational story by a reluctant baseball coach and mentor who helped 16 inner-city kids avoid the streets and succeed in sports and life. Tru Dixon is not perfect but he is honest, caring and willing to give of himself. When you read this book you will feel like doing something good today!

If you want to get favorable media coverage, read this book. These two professors describe how to get a wider audience for your ideas. They have the credentials. In the back of the book there's a summary sheet on each one telling the extensive media coverage they're received, locally, regionally, and nationally.

They argue that one's academic credibility is enhanced by media coverage. But, in working with the media, they point out, a news source has to be ready when media people need them. It may not necessarily be at the convience of the interviewee. The first step in getting in the arena is to prepare a one page, media friendly fact sheet, listing your content areas and an overview of your background. Next, learn the players, who the gatekeepers are and "work the system."

Keep in mind, you're talking to the masses. Don't lecture. This isn't a university class. Keep it simple and easy to understand. Write for the general public. Op-ed columns, magazine articles, and newspaper features are ways of gaining initial media attention.

There's some very practical advice in this book. I've worked in both arenas, the media and academe. I can see how the two sometimes miscommunicate. This book goes a long way in breaking down those communication barriers.
