Most indepsensible resource I have found for parenting
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 5 total.

Not sure what the other reader was talking about. I am an agnostic so I am pretty aware of that kind of thing. I was also a teacher. Not only does Love and Logic work in the classroom but it does amazing things with my kids. I have 2 toddlers and I think the Love and Logic books and videos are an indespensible resource. It seems to me that the previous reviewer was just looking for a forum to rant about something totally unrelated to these books. He also wasn't reviewing this book - I guess some people will actually mislead people to try and get their voice heard. If click on "see my other reviews" under his name you will see that he has reviewed every book in the Love and Logic series with this rhetoric that is based on complete ignorance. Charles Fay and Foster Cline (founders of Love and Logic) are from Evergreen Colorado - not Colorado Springs and have nothing to do with the whole "family first" thing. There is no affiliation whatsoever. Again, not sure what the other reviewer was talking about - but it is a shame that he may turn people away from a resource that is the most effective tool I have come across to raise children who are responsible, able to make choices effectively, have great self-esteem, and to avoid all the arguments and power struggles that come with parenting.

If you will only read one book on education, make it this one. In this book Holt makes a convincing case for homeschooling, explains how to go about it and shares some of his wonderful insights about learning. The book is filled with real life stories of homeschoolers, which makes everything much more tangible.

Bravo to William Schubert and William Ayers, for helping to validate the "insight and understanding" (p. vii) teachers bring to the world of education! Teachers need to take the reflective insights gained in the confides of their classrooms and help "give rise to communities of teachers who learn more from each other through writing, reading, listening, talking, and most of all reflecting" (p. 10). Every teacher who has a story to tell should read this book and follow its example!

The positive interaction between student and teacher begins with a caring spirit on the part of the educator. Vito Perrone inspires the reader with reflections by Covello who stresses the importance of community in any educational system. If you have the heart, you are well on your way to inspiring excellence in your students. This book gives some good illustrations that will tug at your own heart and give you much food for thought.

This series helped boost SAT scores!
Helpful Votes: 39 out of 39 total.

We have been using this series in our homeschool with great success. It's very easy to use because the words are arranged with a logical sequence to them. First a root prefix/suffix is taught and then the words derived from this are studied. My son, who usually dislikes language arts, did extremely well and enjoyed it. He got very high scores on the SAT test as a result. An additional surprise was that when I took the GRE test this year, I got a very high score on the language exam as well! I credit Vocabulary from Classical Roots with helping us achieve these scores.

A Great Book

Review Date: 2005-05-18
In 1996, Dr. Edwards was featured on the Sally Jessy Raphael Show for making a significant difference in a former student's life that was born with a physical disability, Nancy Johnson Miller. At the time of their initial meeting, Dr. Edwards was a first-year Physical Education teacher at the school where Ms. Miller was a 5th grade student. According to Ms. Miller, Dr. Edwards was instrumental in enabling her to move past her diability by accepting it and by being confident in using and/ or developing the talents that God did give her.
As a result of hearing about his impact on this student's life, Dr. Edwards wrote this book. Since then the two have created the Edwards-Miller Foundation for Physical Disabilities, Inc, to provide scholarships for physically challenged individuals to pursue a college education.

Adam Fairclough presents an informative, scholarly, and engaging overview of the significant and invaluable contributions made by African American teachers to the civil rights movement era in Teaching Equality: Black Schools In The Age Of Jim Crow. Fairclough (Professor of American History at the University of East Anglia) explores the development of educational ideals within the black community that culminating with the civil rights movement that ultimately changed the culture and politics of the American landscape -- especially in the southern states. Fairclough uses a broad definition of "teacher" that includes anyone, anywhere, who has taught someone else, anything else that has contributed to opposing a prejudice-based social order of discrimination and devaluation. Teaching Equality is very highly recommended reading for students of Black Studies, the Civil Rights movement, and the history of education in America.

A biography written with a lot of heart & soul!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-11-05
Harry Lang has done an extremely beautiful job writing such an inspiring biography of Bob Panara! I doubt there could have been a better book written - for this is not only about a legend who teaches from the Heart and Soul, but is written by a man who, too, does things from the Heart and Soul.

Fascinating to read of Bob's life and especially touching to read about the incredible bond he has with his late wife, Shirley. It becomes so apparent that Shirley and Bob were truly best friends, partners, and the love of each other's lives.

I loved how Harry skillfully decided which information to include without diminishing the amazing impact of Bob Panara on countless people's lives. This easily could have been four times its original length!

This book should be a required reading for all who are studying to become Teachers of the Deaf. It also should be on the bookshelves of those who love baseball, theater, and literature. Kudos, Harry!
