Bible for teaching school-family-community partnerships
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2001-04-25
This is the best book on the market about school, family, and community partnerships for use in teacher education and school administrator training! Based on decades of research, Epstein has pulled together all the pieces necessary to help educators understand the importance of partnerships, the effects of these partnerships on student outcomes, and the necessary components for building comprehensive school, family, and community partnerships in elementary, middle, and high schools, located in urban, suburban, and rural settings. The research-based framework and approaches Epstein discusses will help all educators create postive relationships and productive partnerships with families and communities, linked directly to school improvement goals. One of the strongest parts of the book is the class projects and assignments found at the end of each chapter. My only regret is that this book was not part of my required reading as a student. If increasing numbers of educators have the opportunity to read Epstein's book and then apply what they've learned, our educational system and students will benefit tremendously.

Excellent summary of classroom and school management
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 1999-11-16
Schoolwide and Classroom Management focuses on the details of handling youngsters and their learning in the very public arena of schoolwork. The authors understand the difficulties of beginning teachers, the schisms in their thinking (do I teach the subject first? or classroom rules first?), and the pulls on their energies. The authors provide an excellent summary of how to arrange the social, emotional, and cognitive elements of instruction; the rules and principles for encouraging student excellence; and the overarching principles that are brought to bear on the student-teacher relationship.

This is a textbook appropriate for student teachers, and for those who would want to teach better.

A moving memoir of a neglected era
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-08-28
I first heard Natalia Singer read aloud from her book at a conference a few years back and was both elated and moved. Here was someone writing about the deeply personal struggle involved in dealing with her mother's mental illness, and yet weaving the story against the background of a relatively unmined, under-appreciated decade in our nation's history. We've had the 60's done to death, with almost as much (mis)information and rant having been written about the 70's. But what to make of coming of age in the 80's?

In Singer's capable hands, we experience both her own personal turmoil and growth, as well as that of the nation. Written with a combination of clarity, honesty and true empathy for those close to her during her journey, Singer's book provides a deeply satisfying, entertaining read. Highly recommended.

Great Cookbook

The whole reason I got this book was because I want to incorporate more fish into my diet. The only thing that has stopped me from doing so in the past was that I didn't know how to prepare fish and I am new to cooking. I got this book and it is great. It has great recipes and give at least 2-4 substitute fish that you can use with each one. Another benefit is that each recipe includes a calorie, fat, saturated fat cholesterol and sodium count. And to top it all of they are fast and easy to prepare. Highly recommended and worth every penny.

A long time ago I found this little cookbook in a used book store for $1.50. I picked it up and used it a few times and then a few more times and now it's one of my favorite cookbooks. The recipes are easy, healthy, and my family loves them! My husband always tell me that I cook such great fish--he's mistaken, it's just great recipes from this little cookbook. I do experiment a little and use different fish for some of the recipes than it suggests, but they've all turned out great!

An Exemplary Biography of a Forgotten American
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2001-09-29
Since his achievements as a music publisher are familiar, may I recall that Don Gillespie's biography is a masterpiece of historical recreation--personal and yet factual, detailed and yet thorough--about an obscure but influential music figure in American music a century ago. For those who don't already know, Ward taught Delius, assigned to manage a plantation in northern Florida, more than he learned at the Leipzig music academy a few years later. One charm of Gillespie's book is incorporating his research efforts into the narrative. Indeed, were I a professor of graduate musicology, this is the sort of book I would give to my best students as an example of how to do uniquely valuable scholarship with otherwise forgotten eminences. The awards this book did not receive upon publication are hereby discredited

I found Sensei to be a warm and moving account of the life and times of the author. His description of his childhood on through his missionary work in Japan is told in a way that makes me feel I am there watching as this fascinating life unfolds.

This book has truly been a pleasure to read and to recommend.

An entertaining read indeed

Review Date: 2008-08-10
Too much of a good thing can be just as bad as too much of a bad thing. "The Seven Deadly Virtues And Other Lively Essays" is a compilation of essays, autobiographical in nature. Author Lynn Bloom warns of the seven deadly virtues throughout her life - duty, rationality, conformity, efficiency, order, economy, and punctuality - and that the overuse of any of them can sometimes lead to many of the problems normally associated with the seven deadly sins. Full of wit and wisdom, "The Seven Deadly Virtues" is an entertaining read indeed to anyone aspiring to be a writer or teacher, and especially for anyone who fears they may be trying a bit too hard.
