Reading specialist uses the complete set of these readers

I'm a reading specialist and author ("Teaching Kids To Read for Dummies") and I use these great little reading books all the time. Just as the publisher's review says, they're phonetically controlled and have cute illustrations that kids can color. I especially like the illustrations because they're not as babyish as some, which means that if your child is starting to read later than his classmates he won't feel embarrassed by too-young looking pages. One more plus for these books -each one gives you a list of the sight words you'll come across in the story so you can run your child through them in advance.

What a great book that truly respects the importance of great literature. Such a rarity in today's superficial academic environment. I wish I could have dinner with the Prof and enjoy some great conversation!!

Review of Programs for At-Risk Students: A Guide to Evaluati
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2002-04-02
Sullivan and Tennant report the importance of evaluating programs in order to improve them. They also make the point that effective evaluation does not come from the involvement of outsiders. "Teachers and other school personnel, those who know their school programs best, can use evaluative tools to make their schools better" (p.3). The authors go on to discuss the many different purposes that evaluation results can be used for.
This evaluation guide is a must read. I would recommend it as a resource in any classroom or school library.

As a clinical child psychologist, I have found this book helpful in both clinical practice and in my role as a college professor. I even used this book as one of the required texts to complete a project in a graduate level course I taught. Several students in that class mentioned that they wished to share this book with their school administrators for use with other projects. I strongly recommend this book for those interested in learning about this topic, as well as those looking to understand grant writing for such initiatives.

Penny is a Super Teacher
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2003-06-01
Mrs. Kittle is a teacher at my high school. I've never had her as a teacher but she always has a "Hi!" when you pass in the hall. I knew she was a great writer. (My essay writing teacher, Mr. Fayle, talks about her writing all the time) I just didn't know how good she really was. Until now...
Her stories are filled with passion and advice for new teachers. I want to absorb every word she writes and use it to its fullest extent. I plan on becoming an elementary school teacher and wish I could carry Penny Kittle around in my pocket so I could pull her out whenever I have a question. Although, with this book, I can almost do that.
Mostly written for teachers by a teacher, this book deserves ten stars and will inspire everyone that reads it to be an outstanding teacher.

Bracey exposes the foibles of our testing mania
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-10
Gerald Bracey's new book is a perfect explanation of the ins and outs of our standardized testing craze. He explains in a witty and at times slightly ironic style the problems of using standardized tests to measure student learning. He gives a good overview of what's involved in developing tests and he is quick to point out that the tests don't and can't do what they purport. His review of the SAT is fascinating. Although he summarizes information which has been explained elsewhere he is concise and to the point. The SAT can only predict, at best, what a college applicant will do his first year, And actually the student's own high school record, especially his grades, is a better predicter. He also exposes the lie that the decline of SAT scores is an indication of a decline in American education. The change in scores is really only a reflection in the change of students taking the test. Orginally a small elite of white males took the test. Today a more diversified range of students takes the test and this accounts for the change in scores. And it also interesting that Bracey points out that the math scores never declined. Another important part of the book is his discussion of intelligence and how our understanding of the nature of intelligence has changed from the idea that intelligence is a single entity to the more complex concept, based on the theories of Howard Garner, that intelligence is not one but seven separate intelligences. But the great strength of this book is Bracey's skill in taking the arcane science of psychometrics, which in the past has been influenced by racist and elitest ideas and which today is often manipulated by political and economic concerns, and making it understandable. When Bracey discusses norm and criterion- referenced tests; stanines, percentages and scales; domains and detracters; IQs; aptitude, ability, and achievement he can make it all seem so simple. He makes it so easy one's tempted to ask, why didn't I get it before. It seems that the world has gone test crazy. This book will explain why most of the testing isn't necessary and doesn't work. And he also explains what we should be trying to do.

Her book is divided into quotes on Education, Children, Leadership, and Human / Work Relations. There is a CD included with this book which has the quotes along with artwork and photographs - simply choose your quote and open it on the CD, and you have an instant Poster in .pdf format. A genealogist's delight
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2003-04-16
Norman Carson's saga is beautifully written; I would expect no less from a college English professor. His being, in addition, a Presbyterian minister did not prevent him from manipulating the beauracracy of officialdom in order to pursue the quest for his biologic family. The book has universal appeal but will touch the hearts especially of families with adopted children and the heads of budding genealogists.
