Higher Learning, A Novel
My Wife the Metaphysician, or Lady Murasaki's Revenge
Intended as a companion volume and reader's guide to the author's earlier book, My Wife the Metaphysician, or Lady Murasaki's Revenge, this systematic set of annotations maps an extensive mental landscape by reifying the emotional force of lived experience and the cognitive wellsprings of literary creativity. Akin to uncovering a palimpsest in an ancient manuscript, the process painstakingly lays bare the strata of meaning beneath a fictional text's surface by retracing the pathways of the author's self-awareness and removing the veil from hidden references and allusions. What emerges is a specific pattern of images and ideas embedded in a writerly consciousness that are constituted by biographical and historical data. This stocktaking begins as a journey of "rememoration" that chronicles the migrations of the author's unusual family from Russia to America via Germany, Palestine, China, and Japan. It is a fascinating account of how the author's parents, Russian-Jewish refugees, managed to carve out a life as classical musicians for themselves and their sons, first in East Asia between the World Wars, then in America after World War II. The figured bass of the subsequent narrative is the catastrophe that befalls the author and his wife, their lives together poisoned forever, her cruel death brought on by the acts of criminals who hide behind the mask of academic respectability, shielded from condign punishment by corrupt university administrators and unscrupulous judges. A case is laid out, with its corpora delicti, showing in detail how the evil was perpetrated, then allowed to perdure over a span of more than thirty years. Towering above everything is the exemplum of the couple's steadfast love for each other and for their magical daughter. Interleaved throughout the book are numerous photographs and illustrations, along with fragments of correspondence with an astute reader, the author's faithful friend. These contemporaneous responses to successive drafts as the annotated book developed articulate a series of exegeses that here serve as a literary "guide for the perplexed."

I have had a soft spot for Jonathan Williams' photographs for many years, since I first saw one of his wonderful photos of
poets' graves in a long forgotten magazine. I was one of the lucky ones who got to "know" Williams in his later years, though
only by correspondence, when I was researching a biography of one of the poets Williams had befriended and sponsored, and
one day when I was least expecting it the mailman brought me a heavily stiffened package that I just knew had something grand
in it! I used a scissors to hack away at the duct tape surrounding all edges of the reinforced cardboard square, and soon
my little studio was littered with bits of rubber, plastic, tape and brown paper, and I was in hog heaven when the debris
flew away and revealed a gorgeous print Williams had made for me of the man I was writing about. It was his way, he said,
of encouraging me. I see this portrait reproduced in A PALPABLE ELYSIUM on page 149, the poet Jack Spicer, casual and nearly
unrecognizable in jeans and what looks like an Eisenhower jacket with padded shoulders, one flung back, his hands held awkwardly
at different angles, one nearly hidden behind his butt. He's balancing on a huge hunk of felled timber, one of many massive
trunks in the photo, a swatch of white sky like a flag poking through the timber at the top center of Williams' composition.
The photo is from 1953 and had that eerie fifties quality peeking through it, I suppose a question of the color film stock
JW used (and perhaps the particularly romantic gaze of the Rolleiflex with which it was taken).
Not all the photos in the book have this resonance for me, but many are remarkable in any light, and some have that archival quality of wow! Lorine Niedecker, Mina Loy, who else but Williams has given these writers both the high quality exposure their work deserved, or sat them down to give these uncompromising images for posterity. Actually there aren't many women in the book, and the "genius and solitude" subtitle might have been an indication that this was going to be a highly specialized, masculinist vision, but I couldn't help myself, I embraced this book as a memory of the late Jonathan Williams, for who could resist, in the captions that accompany each photograph, a man who tells us that in his youth Michael McClure was so beautiful that JW called him Allure McClure, and once took advantage of an overnight trip to pilfer, for erotic purposes, a pair of Michael's boxer shorts.... God bless him.

THE medication reference for educational personnel & parents

The utilization of medication in the educational setting continues to reach new heights on a daily basis. If you are a parent
of a child who must take medication at school or a school employee who must manage medication for students in school - this
book is a MUST! Clearly written in everyday language, the PEDR addresses the most common school age health maladies from
ADHD to pain and fever; clearly describes the most common medications used in school settings and the how's, why's and side
effects to be alert for with each medication - even addresses drug interactions and herbal preparations commonly seen.
As a school health nurse, I can't say enough about how much I have loved this book - but better yet, the unlicensed assistive
personnel who give medications in school under my supervision and the parents of my students who take medication at school,
have loved it even more...it is written for them but well used by me in educating them all in order to improve the educational
opportunities for these children.

The second edition of Peer Coaching for Educators still contains the basic guidelines and transparency masters for setting
up a peer coaching program in a school, department or student teaching program. The simple five step process can be transferred
to active practice with rules, checklists, sample scripts, and suggestions for feedback and coaching. The new comparisons
with teacher evaluation and peer review teams will be valuable to administrators and district officers. Best of all, this
model of peer coaching can be used for peers who are teachers, peer who are administrators, and peers who are staff development
trainers.

This story could only happen to a dedicated lover of all creatures. A biology teacher with a passion for his work comes
across a baby Prairy Dog. The mother was dead, so he takes it home and gives it the care necessary to keep it alive. When
the baby was strong enough he took it to school and shared the experiences with his students. This tale is so fascinating
that I was happy that it was a short story, because I couldnt put it down until I read the entire story. What a life
this Prairie Dog led. Great story I recommend it to everyone, regardless of their age.

Dr. Norris' book about the mistreatment of American educators is very interesting and should be read by all who have children
in schools, make policies for public school teachers, or are employed in public schools. It's refreshing to see the truth
as experienced by someone in the trenches. Many misconceptions are addressed. The book is very easy to read because of the
way it is written. He is obviously very experienced and has the best interest for all involved in education at the forefront.

"What are we to make of education? The question presents us, as teachers, educators, policymakers, and students, with the
challenge of restoring to our institutions those best traditions of teaching and learning that contemporary conditions put
in jeopardy. It asks us to ask ourselves how we are to reinstall in our schools, colleges, and universities the kind of rich
educational practice that we so much need. The philosophers and traditions of enquiry considered in Philosophical Reflections
for Educators offer powerful, sometimes conflicting, but always provocative accounts of what is most at stake here. In the
context of the Pacific Rim, where the combined pressures of economic change, population density, and cultural hegemony are
perhaps felt with a peculiar intensity, it is a real strength of the book that it also explores and celebrates work from non-Western
traditions, Indian, Confucian, Muslim - that is, from ways of thinking and practice especially able to disturb our complacent,
neoliberal, increasingly globalised orthodoxies."

like the book, however, it was a nostalgia trip for me. I was
born and grew up in the same area, just a few years later. Many
of the sites and names were quite familiar. I am purchasing
another one to send my brother.
