A great educator reveals his thoughts
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.

Paulo Freire, viewed by many as the the most significant thinker in education in the 20th century, looks at his own thought processes in this book of letters to his niece. He explains here how he writes and rewrites, how his educational theories relate to current political debates, how he responded to his exile from his native Brazil when his teachings raised the consciousness of the peasant class to threatening levels. The book gives fascinating glimpses into the life of a great educator who loved his students deeply and who believed in their abilities to think for themselves.

As a literacy researcher, teacher educator, parent and grandparent, I found myself captivated by this comprehensive text on emergent literacy. The authors show how parents and eary childhood specialists can make literacy learning accessible to all children through everyday practices, in a variety of settings. It is an excellent example for how to present research in application for practitioners. I plan to put a copy in my five month old grandson's library and keep several on hand. I will give this book as a gift to new parents and use it in my course instruction for literacy education.

Good insight into a teachers world.
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2001-09-24
This book really gives the reader an opportunity to see what life is like in the world of teaching. Especially in the larger school systems. The author ,through his experience, let's the reader see how politics and the outside world of the students make it difficult at times to actually teach. The beginnings of the alternative school, Yonkers Prep, was inspirational to read. They kept it going through many ups and downs. The author's love of teaching is really brought out in this book, although he did go through many difficult times. I think this is good reading for anyone. Especially for teachers and those who would like to be teachers.

Vibrant educator and leader

I was not asked to write this. I was called to the task because I know of Dr. Arthur DeRosier well enough to know that he will, always, downplay the significance of his presence in the course of history. I suppose, as a historian, he knows no other way. As a man of generous spirit and intense passion for the survival of vibrant educational institutions, he's simply never slowed till now to reflect on how his life has intersected with those of family member, students, staff, community members and colleagues, among others. It matters not whether you are a novice or veteran of academia. The message is clear - there is more to be done, more to be learned, and more thoughtful ways to proceed. Read this book carefully, with mind and heart open for it deserves nothing less. There is no better man for the job of educating future presidents [and leaders of all genres].

Excellent lesson plans to help teach kids valuable skills!

Review Date: 1999-04-24
This book provides teachers with a variety of interesting lesson plans to help teach kids about their emotions, what makes them upset, how they deal with conflict, and how to be peacemakers. It encourages exploration within self, between people, in the community and in the world. Lesson plans are succinct and creative. In light of the recent school violence taking place all over this country, no teacher should leave these issues un-addressed in his/her classroom. This book offers many wonderful ways to approach these subjects.

As a remedial reading teacher, I am always looking for good literature to teach language arts skills such as parts of speech, story elements, as well as phonics. This book makes it simple to find a quality piece of literature to use as a springboard for other skill activities. I highly recommend it to ANY teacher who wants to teach students skills through literature!!

A Real Kick for a Montessori Student!
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 1999-08-02
My son read this book after he completed the 3-year primary program. He really got a kick out of reading about the woman who started it. Now that he has finished his first year of traditional public schooling, he thinks Dr. Montessori was a very smart lady. He often voices a desire to go back to her type of classroom! This book is also a quick, easy read for parents who don't have much time, but have an interest in the woman, the philosophy, and the history of Montessori education.

The life of Charles Kamm personifies the lofty and ultimate goals to which every master teacher aspires. His dedication to the teaching profession as portrayed through Marcia S. Popp's THE MAN WHO BECAME A SCHOOL should serve as a measuring stick for aspiring teachers and administrators, as well as a rule book for practicing educators. Dr. Popp has epitoized Charles Kamm as Jesse Stuart's "good teacher that lives on and on through his students." Charles Kamm is the teacher who is immortal and role model for all educators.
