No wider than 470 pixels!

I am a college student. I am studying "How to evaluate the web sites?" now. I search many relevant articles in the professional periodicals, but still feel not enough. This book gives me a great help. It contains many points of view that other experts didn't mention before. Some of them like that a well-designed web page should be no wider than about 470 pixels since it do not usually require sideways scrolling, and the information about the author likes her (or his) related job history, research interests, and work or school affiliation should be included in web pages. I classify this into the RELIABILITY of web sites. I have learned a lot of good knowledge from this book. It's really helpful to me!

I have been using this book with my son, a 2nd grader. It has been the simplest method of teaching phonics I have come across to date. I have two older children (both excellent readers)whom I did not use this method with. When using Explode the Code I can sit down with my son and do a few pages at a time(usually 3). I don't have to have charts, graphs, etc., although I do also read to/with him a few times a week . I'm seeing steady progress as we keep up our lessons. I appreciate the writing/spelling practice he is getting as well. This workbook has been an excellent tool for a slow-maturing reader.

I love the Explode the Code and Get Set for the Code series. After years of researching (and purchasing) numerous reading materials for my kids, this is the one that I found worked the best for both kid and teacher (that would be me.)

Great way to teach your child how to read!

I taught both of my sons (both 4 when we first started) how to read using Explode the Code. The books are well organized and use lots of repetition without boring the kids. Also the sentences used in the books are often humorous which keep my kids laughing. My only pet peeve about these books is that in a few cases, the drawings could have been better. However, overall, I highly recommend parents who would like to teach their children how to read to use Explode the Code.

This is the workbook to the text, Ordinary Parent's guide to teaching your child to read. It is incremental, and covers everything that the texts does in the order that the text book covers it. It really is a shame that the OPGTTYCR did not tell me that these were the workbooks for that guide. I found out on a homeschooling yahoo group and we have been happily progressing along.

Explode the Code has been a great workbook for spelling for several years of homeschooling. We use another spelling program for our main text and "take a break" with these workbooks. The pictures are funny and engaging, and the lessons do a great job of implanting the information.

Bottom Line - It Works!

The progressive phonics introduction, the engaging little drawings, the repetitive tasks, the systematic skill progression, among other educational objectives, all boil down to one fact ~ THIS WORKS! I've tried several other methods to assist my special child in spelling and reading. While these workbooks are marketed more as a supplement to a reading program, nothing has been more influential in my daughter actually GETTING IT! She is always eager to pull out her Explode the Code book first. The progess is consistently steady. My friend's child who is not learning challenged feels the same enthusiam. The publisher of this series also produces the wonderful Wordly Wise 3000 workbooks which are equally successful and well-received by my students.

By the way, these "1/2" books are exactly like the whole numbered books except they have more practice. If your student has not quite mastered a particular level, then the 1/2's will solidify it. Sometimes, I've been tempted to just buy the 1/2's from the start, because they seem a better value page-wise.

The Little Lama that Could

This book is the captivating tale of Lama Dudjom Dorjee Rinpoche, "The Jolly Lama." The book is divided into short stories in chronological order that make it easy to digest in segments.

It is easy to see from this book that Lama Rinpoche is a giant of a man - but the book could almost be renamed (after a similarly-themed children's book) - "The Little Lama that Could." This accomplished yogi was not placed into a monastic setting as a child like many Tibetan master's, he had to compete for his education time and time again! A fulfilling read for anyone interested in yoga, Tibetan Buddhism or inspiring biographies.

Side note: the first part of the book also gives detailed information about native Tibetan plants, animals, and customs that may be of interest.

Not only is this book phenomenal, but so is the author. I worked with Ken for 6 years. This man runs circles around the word "Amazing!" Not only has he left a lasting imprint on his students who have passed through his doors, but of the teachers who were blessed enough to stand in his presence when the school bell rang. Buying this book will help teachers, parents, and students develop a new-found understanding of the words "love of learning." BUY THIS BOOK!!!

I loved this book!

This was a great book, I thoroughly loved it! The writer captured both the humour and language of Newfoundlanders! In fact, it captured Nflders. much better than "The Shipping News" ever did. I read with delight as Tess described life in the Cove as a child then as she returns to visit her in-laws. The author writes with such an ease, the language is fluid and the story develops well. At first, I thought the story and the betrayal was going to be about Tess's search for her father but I was pleasantly surprised to read it was only a backdrop in the story. I never suspected the "family trouble" but I did figure out Danny's problems while he was home for his father's death. The author certainly packed a lot of story into a small book!! I am going to look for the previous book, "The Corrigan Women" to read in the VERY near future!! Very highly recommended.
