Collaboration Skills for Educators and Nonprofit Leaders (Building the Village)

A little volume with a big payoff for practitioners.

Review Date: 1999-03-23
"Hank Rubin is at it again. Collaboration Skills for Educators and Nonprofit Leaders, the first in his "Building the Village" series, is a little volume with a potentially big payoff for thoughtful practitioners at the central office, in the principal's chair or in the classroom. This is a book that can be the basis for collaborative efforts with volunteers, corporate partners and employee groups. This is not a book for Lone Rangers or for those who are cynical about the true value of and need for collaborative leadership. Author Hank Rubin is a successful practitioner, community activist, teacher, theorist and collaborative leader himself. He brings to us the elements of effective collaborative leadership, not from large complex corporate organizations, but from the perspective of the world in which you and I apply our leadership knowledge and skills. In doing so, Rubin presents practical dimensions of collaborative leadership that stress the need to build, manage and maintain relationships with other leaders in our communities. The focus here is on accomplishing tangible results, making a difference and completing our work in the public realm. Rubin sees our jobs as revolving "around building villages of support to raise children." His book can help us be successful in that mission." This book is a delight to read, with stories of interest to college and high school students, teachers and professors, and anyone who has ever experienced or considered higher education.

As with the first volume, the book is well edited and structured with a variety of topics and people. I am impressed at the caliber of writers, including John C. Ortberg, Jr., Darrell L. Bock, and Luis Palau. Bible texts assigned to each story help to solidify the spiritual lessons.

Over and over the stories remind us that our challenges can become God's blessings. Whether it be facing failure or seeing unexpected interventions, learning God's way through prayer or recovering from rejection, these authors show how any experience can "work together for good." Some of my favorite stories are "The Coach and the Goldbrick" by David Jeffrey of Baylor University, "Heaven Sent" by Lisa Brandom of John Brown University, "Apple Pie and Sunshine" by Bob Hanley of Anderson College, and "Destiny with a Big Blue Bus" by Hanne Larson of Straight Ahead Ministries.

What could possibly be the stories behind such titles as "My Sweet Potato Man," "Manna in the Mail," and "Drums, Mono, and Sanctification"? I leave that for you to find out.

Inspiration to this college Student
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2003-04-02
My school gave many students who attended an event a copy of this book. Since that day, my roomates and I read it every night, as a way of keeping up faith that although college is difficult, through the grace of God, we will make it through. I reccomend this book to any college student in need of inspiration, to any parent of a college student, or to anyone in general. This is a wonderful presentation of stories.

A Coloring Book of the Trojan War: The Iliad Vol. 1 (Trojan War)

Excellent and Culturally Authentic!
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2000-12-16
Based upon the Iliad, the story of the Trojan War, this is a wonderful activity book for young children learning about the ancient Greeks. This book is based upon the second half of the epic. What's really fantastic about this coloring book is that the art is culturally authentic, based upon real vase paintings from Ancient Greece. The story of the Iliad is retold in captions that accompany rich black and white line art.

We see not only the characters we might expect: Hector, Achilles, Patroclus, Diomedes, Paris, Ajax, Neoptolemus and Menelaus, but the book also includes women from the epic: Helen, Cassandra, Creusa, Andromache, and Penthesilia the Amazon (think Xena the Warrior Princess, but not camp). Professor Anderson also includes a picture of an African warrior from Ethiopia.

Brief Greek quotations are scattered throughout the book and may interest young people in learning the Greek alphabet.

These books are great because they are of excellent quality and very inexpensive and certain to excite the imaginations of bright young children!

I have been a fan of Comic Life for years and often use it with my students and to create documents myself. Comic Life for Educators taught me things I didn't know it could do. It also has tons of ideas for all subject areas and for all grade levels.

For the new Comic Life user or even someone like me who has been using it for years, this book is a must-have!

I purchased three copies of this book to go to each of our schools libraries. I kept a fourth copy for reference and to give presentations to faculty. Copyright is not fun reading but this author has organized the information in an accessible way.
