Nancy McCabe's essays are ample proof that the nonfiction memoir, when handled by the right author, is an art form rivalling fiction or poetry in power and even beauty. These essays are about violence and memory, how to experience a traumatic personal event and arrive at some kind of resolution. I first read McCabe's "Meeting Sophie" because I, too, am the mother of daughters adopted from China. When I loved that book, I ordered this one. Even though I haven't personally experienced rape or even near-rape (the Flashlight Man fortunately bungles his crime), I was so enamored of McCabe's writing that I read this book in a single night. Highly recommended.

In 1969, Barney Sabo decided to resign from his position as a secondary school principal and move to a remote part of Alaska with his wife and reside in a wilderness hunting/fishing lodge almost 200 miles outside of Anchorage. Alaska's Evergreen Lodge On Beautiful Lake Louise is the biographical story of how the move was made, the life style changes that ensued, the challenges and adventures experienced so deep into nature's wilderness and far from the comforts and stresses of "civilization". Alaska's Evergreen Lodge is highly recommended reading for anyone who has ever dreamed of chucking it all and going "back to nature" to enjoy a simpler life.

I don't read much, but after growing up in South Carolina and visiting Florida many times, I found this book to be quite hilarious. Unless you are a jackass, you will love this book. My wife is a teacher and this stuff happens to her all the time (except her students are even wilder-like from animal house or something-except in high school).

We love this workbook. I wished we had found it earlier in our educational journey. We sit around the dinner table and take the tests with the whole family trying to out do each other and beat our last scores. If you want to get your brain thinking in ways you take for granted, you will need this book and the next one also.

This book is designed to be a resource for people who want to give serious thought to changing their schools in some fundamental fashion. To achieve this aim, it includes material of interest not only to administrators, teachers, and boards of education, but also to parents, community members, and many students. Leaders in both the private and public sectors realize that those who do "front-line" work need to be involved in making decisions about how their organization is run, and they also need to be capable of making good decisions. They need both information and opportunity. This book will help provide people in schools, education's "front line," with better information to use as they make decisions that will affect their schools.

I have known Ari for several years yet the book was full of surprises. It covered the facets of Ari's work previously unknown to me. It also contined excellent reproductions of his work and a number of photos to delight the groupies. The writing of this book was an inspired and well-implemented idea.

I wasn't sure what I was getting when I ordered this book. My initial thoughts were that this might be helful in managing our heart failure patients. After all chronic disease is chronic disease. I got so much more then I bargained for. "The Art of Empowerment: Stories and Strategies for the Daibetes Educators" is more then a book with the hows and the whys; it is a journey. One that encompases self-reflection and the willingness to take a good hard look at your existing belief system. The authors artfully walk you through how they developed their philosophy of empowerment. That empowerment for both the educator and patient come from the concepts of freedom and responsibility. "Because we are free to make choices, we are responsible for the consequences of out choices". The book is rich with stories from nurses, educators, psychologists and physicians who have taken the steps through self-reflection to create a vision. What is our purpose as diabetes educators? Each charpter is design to provide you with tools and exercises that will help you with the process of self-reflection. Empowerment is a vision or a philosophy of giving care, the vision comes before the method and the vison comes through self-reflection. Coincidently, while reading this book, I was doing some work with one of the NPs at our hospital who manages the diabetes clinic. It was amazing to me to actually see the many opportunites to use this strategy as we saw patients over the past two weeks. My NP has asked if she could borrow my book when I am done. I have decided to buy her a copy of her own.

This short book written by the nephew of K offers some beautiful and very sincere reflexions about Krishnamurti.

This book sheds light on a number of topics plaguing music education today. The author is experienced in the field in all grade levels and offers practical advice on what to do in various situations. It is a nice reminder of what we should be doing for the music education profession.
