I love finding a helpful book when I need one. Boucher's text on adolescents with emotional and behavioral disorders is thoughtfully constructed, seems to have anticipated my informational needs, and is written in an understandable, yet content-rich style. She clarifies emotional and behavioral disorder concepts and educational strategies with many examples drawn from the lives of dozens of adolescents in discord. Thanks to the clarity of these illustrations, I better understand a wide variety of behaviors and recognize them when I see them. Most importantly, I now have some practical ideas for assisting these students when I meet them in my profession.

Many superlatives came to mind when looking it over.

Great book, poor choices by Amazon.com

Along with this amazing book I received a free disposable razor that was located in the same box. I am currently obtaining my masters in Social Work and as a professional in the field I find this to be deeply disturbing. Razors are used quite frequently for self harm and suicide attempts by adolescents and adults. If someone were ordering this book as a self-help guide they would have been given a free utensil to utilize. I strongly feel that an individual at amazon.com should have been aware of this before placing a razor in the same box as a suicide text book.

I am disappointed that I had to utilize the "review" section to voice my concern, but I feel that it was only another attempt for me to inform amazon of the incident. I have heard only good things about this book and am quite thrilled to own it. Please do not read my review as a revolt against the book but rather those who sent it to me.

If you work in mental health, in educational systems, or in geriatric settings, then it is only a matter of time before you will face the crisis of suicidal behavior. How you respond to the suicidal client will become a critical determinant in the outcome of this crisis. Unfortunately, the resources in this area available to helping professionals are fairly scarce and not always particularly helpful.

If you are a helping professional who works with suicidal folks, or you are simply interested in understanding suicide better, this is an essential addition to your book collection. The Granello's have combined their years of experience and research while simultaneously culling the body of research on suicidal behavior and assessment and intervention with suicidal people to produce an outstanding resource for all of us who work with people.

As both a clinician and a university profession, what I appreciate most about this book is its applicability both as a teaching text and as a clinical reference and guide. I believe that every mental health agency should have a copy on hand for its practitioners, and I believe that every graduate student in mental health or education programs should have this book included in their curriculum.

This book is well written, well organized, and well researched. It truly is an essential guide to helping professionals and educators, and I would add, anyone with an interest in understanding suicide better.

As a faculty member in a college of education I frequently consult with area school districts and conduct staff development workshops, so I understand teachers' need for intervention strategies that are easy to use and effective. It is also why Teach and Reach is at the top of my "must read list" for all teachers. Simply stated, it is one of the best practical guides for teachers that I have ever read. If you are looking for practical and common sense interventions that work, you can start and end your search with the purchase of Teach and Reach.

I am in the process of writing my dissertation about the ways in which various colleges of education teach future teachers about using technology in the classroom. This book has been a great help to me. In fact, I worry that I'm going to be criticized for citing it too much in my dissertation. If you teach preservice teachers about technology, which I do, this book is fabulous!

I am currently studying to become an elementary school teacher, and I devoured this book!

It is honest and inspiring, as well as intelligently and humourously written!

Selma's love for children and for learning really shows through. I was inspired to learn that school does not have to be dull and repetitive. I have gained new appreciation for the courage it takes to 'teach outside the box'.

It has made me so excited about teaching.

Thank you, Selma!

The fullest, most human audio glimpses of the yoga master
Helpful Votes: 16 out of 16 total.
Review Date: 2004-10-30
This is an exceptional CD, even by SRF standards. It presents an informal talk the great yoga master gave on Christmas Day 1949. Fully 74 minutes long, it is broken into 34 tracks so that you may fastforward directly to your favorite stories.
There are too many inspirational peaks to list them all. Many are not printed or recorded elsewhere; others are presented with a new twist. Just to cite a few:
* A most delightful telling of the master's youthful experience of overcoming hunger and learning to rely implicitly on the assistance of God (track 24).
* An elsewhere-unrecorded, very touching story of the Divine Light appearing while he and some students drove through Laguna Beach: intervening to confirm his intuition in a tiny matter - of Scotch bread. (track 26)
* An ecumenical narrative expressing the divine power, devotion, and humility of St. Francis.
* A little sample of the master's lovely teasing with a student - here he teases Tara Mata (Laurie V. Pratt) (mingling it with praise for her), the highly advanced disciple who edited Autobiography of a Yogi and who has written so inspiringly of how the master initiated her into Cosmic Consciousness (see the SRF booklet, Forerunner of a New Race).

PS: I don't know why Amz has this checked as "abridged." It has been re-engineered by SRF to reduced background noise, but it IS the full talk (periods of silent meditation omitted, of course).

This is the only trading book you need in your library. If I was going to do it all over again as a trader I would buy this book and Mark Douglas' The Disciplined Trader. Better than most of the seminars being touted today and in my opinion better than software that predicts with almost XX% accuracy for 50 times the cost of this book. I have all of Joe Ross's books and this is by far the best one.

The Thinking Person's Way to Trade Options
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 16 total.
Review Date: 2000-03-24
Joe Ross has written the best strategy guide for trading options I have ever seen. This book shows you how to blend the best features of option trading together with the best of futures trading. The book is a classic, and with each reading, I gained more and more understanding of how the markets really work, and how to take advantage of combining options and futures.

If you are an option trader, you need the understanding of the underlying futures as presented by Joe. If you are a futures trader, Joe shows you the simple and most straightforward way to bolster your futures trading by adding to it the world of options.

To say that this book is outstanding is to vastly underrate its contents. A bargain at any price and worth far more than its cost.

I am reminded by people like George Carver and Booker Washington that I have done so little, while they accomplished so very much. Besides the awe inspiring historical accounts of these two saints, the book is written with a kind of zeal that is obvious to the reader. It is obvious that the author loved writing it as much as we enjoy reading it (either that or he fakes it really well).

I have only a few books that I will make my children read (when they come of age)....this is one of them.

Men of Sacrifice

Review Date: 2000-04-20
John Perry has delivered the goods as a researcher and biographer. In this book about two luminaries of the 20th Century, who brought the light of their torches from the 19th, we have a book that will inspire everyone. There are places where it will not leave you tearless.

Balance, honesty and contextual historicism are characteristic of Perry's work.

Most reading it will concur with this reviewer that Perry has found a niche in reminding us of those persons of sacrifice who are such a rare type of leader in this 21st century.

Take time to read this book and discover Booker T. Washington and George Washington Carver whose lives transcended racial prejudice, reviling, misunderstanding and jealousy.

I own the "Family Virtues Guide" which lists 52 virtues and how you and your family can discuss and apply them to your lives. It uses quotes from all major religions and is very spiritually based. This book on the other hand also has 52 virtues but is more secular and adaptable for the general public. It has a great introduction to speaking the language of virtues instead of using criticism to change behavior and encourages you to learn this new habit. It also has ideas on classroom or entire school projects to encourage the use of your virtues. Each virtue has an explanation, why we should practice it?, how to practice it?, life examples of what the virtue would look like, signs of successs, an affirmation, activities, reflection questions, poster points and quotes. This is a great book for individuals, families and groups and it's not just for children. It's just a helping hand in creating a 'culture of character'.
