Rosemond Tuve: A Life Of The Mind is a biography of the remarkable female scholar Rosemond Tuve (1903-1964), especially known
for her expertise concerning the English Renaissance, who became the first woman to lecture in the English departments of
Harvard and Princeton, and to be appointed professor at the University of Pennsylvania. Her success as a gifted teacher and
in earning a place in a male-dominated profession distinguish her life and achievements. Personal letters add a revealing
touch to this inspirational life story of learning, growing, and rising to challenges.

This is a great biography of Rosemond Tuve, a remarkable woman scholar, who began life on the prairies of South Dakota and
rose to honor and acclaim in the United States and Europe.
This inspiring story is a reflection on education and the rewards of the life of the mind. Believing that education is a series of transformative experiences - she had a profound impact on all who knew her. I highly recommend this insightful, engrossing new biography of a truly remarkable woman.

Someone recommended this book to me and gave it to me as a gift. I was less than thrilled until I started reading the book.
I truly enjoyed it, far beyond what I had imagined. Bradley uses a light touch and every page is lifted with Bradley's unique
sense of humor. Highly recommended.

I have been teaching for nearly 20 years and came across School Daze on the Internet. I purchased the book hoping to compare
my first year as a teacher to Bradley's. When the book arrived, I read the book in two days. It is an extremely accurate portrayal
of the life of a first year teacher. Also, the humor Bradley uses really takes the book to another level. I highly recommend
School Daze.

The second updated edition of SCHOOLS AND DATA: THE EDUCATOR'S GUIDE FOR USING DATA TO IMPROVE DECISION MAKING covers an area
which is no longer optional for educators, providing analysis of statistics relating to data use in the schools of teachers
and principals. Real-world examples accompany step-by-step procedures for collecting, organizing and using data to provide
leaders with more effective decision-making tools. A 'must' for educators and administrators in school settings.

I taught a section on statistics to educators back in 2001 and the textbook we used was a "statistics without the statistics"
coursepack which failed to satisfy anyone. I am certain, however, that if I had Dr. Creighton's Schools and Data, my students
would have felt more comfortable and learned a great deal more. With its specific examples for the schools and lack of jargon
this volume definitely fills a need in regards to ubiquitous Ed School quantitative research syllabi. It not only explains
statistics like t tests, z scores, and correlation coefficients, but it also provides excellent rationale for where and how
they should be used in our schools. Such illumination is most welcome as many teachers-to-be think statistical measurement
is a waste of time. Dr. Creighton shows readers exactly how to use the SPSS and GB-STAT programs--down to the exact functions
to enable and click--which will make performing calculations and determinations far easier than most people expect. We live
in a time wherein the public is gradually starting to discover the importance of the phrase "research based" so a book like
this is invaluable as a means to bettering the education of children as it helps to separate the good from the trendy when
it comes to instructional method (not to mention all the other ways in which statistical analysis could improve the functioning
of the schools as well). It was an excellent buy.

Seeing Language In Sign: The Work Of William C. Stokoe by Jane Maher (Assistant Professor, Basic Education Program, Nassau
Community College, Garden City, New York) is an informed and informative examination of the life and ground breaking work
of William Stokoe, the man who dared to challenge the commonly held belief that sign language is not a true "language" in
and of itself. Stokoe's study and intense research into the beauty, complexity, and linguistic formatives of what would come
to be called American Sign Language forever transformed how the linguistic community would view the language of the deaf.
A fascinating book of an academic pioneer and his work, Seeing Language In Sign is a highly recommended and invaluable addition
to Linguistic Studies supplemental reading lists and academic reference collections.

Seeing Language in Sign, by Jane Maher, held my attention to the last page. It is a true story about one of the most influencial
hearing individuals in Deaf Society. William Stokoe was a true hero in his brilliance, committment and sacrifices to bring
the true nature of American Sign Language to light. His story is inspiring and infuriating, as the reader learns of the obsticles
placed in Stokoe's way as he strove to prove that ASL is a true language, full of all the richness and bredth of any spoken
language. I was moved to tears several times and as I read the last page I wanted to meet this incredible man in person.
The author wrote in such a manner that I felt as though I knew him personally. In my opinion, he deserves the Nobel Prize
in Education. This book is a MUST READ for anyone who is serious about understanding ASL and Deaf Culture.

If you've ever walked down a dark street and felt the tingle in the back of your neck because of a simple passerby, then you
need this book.
Even if you never have to use what is taught and demonstrated in Self-Defense for Teachers: An Unfortunate Necessity for Modern Educators, the knowledge imparted and the empowerment given fills you with a quiet confidence that if something were to happen -- you are more prepared than most.
Mr. Chaparro gives a number of examples of violence in public schools -- that could very well happen on any street and in broad dayligh -- that are swept under the rug on your local newscasts. These instances are eyeopening in the level of awareness and preparedness one needs in defending themselves.
The book is user-friendly with well-written directions to go along with detailed pictures of simulated real-life encounters that can happen on the street. It's a great guide to practice with a friend or to take to a martial arts teacher for additional instruction.

There are many books available that discuss the complex problem of school violence and the need for early intervention for
troubled students. This book is timely in that its release comes so closely on the heels of the VA Tech Massacre, the deadliest
school shooting in U.S. History, but I also think Chaparro's work is courageous in that it encourages teachers to really think
through what they would do in a given situation. It is important for teachers to have a plan to fight back if necessary and
not allow themselves or their students to be victimized. Chaparro's emphasis on prevention is important, but this book also
answers the practical question that so far no one has been willing to answer, "What would/should you do if this happened to
you?" A must read for all teachers and administrators.

The people behind this book worked hard to expand on their topics in a realistic way. I can easily use the majority of their
topics as I work with with teen-age students. The information that is presented is not too simple for students who are in
regular education classes, even though it was designed for special education students. The age-appropriate activities and
topics bring on discussion that is neccesary for students as they work towards better interactions with others.

I stumbled upon this book while looking for resources on NLD (nonverbal learning disorder), which has caused my bright, 12-year-old
son to flounder both academically and socially since fourth grade. It is FULL of excellent activities for children who have
difficulty picking up social cues and interacting appropriately with their peers. Because my son works so hard during the
regular school year, and typical summer programs and camps only cause him anxiety, we now opt to let him just take time off
from organized activity during his summer breaks. But he will be assisting in the family home business, and now we plan to
incorporate the exercises in this book into his daily schedule. They are interesting and fun, and even I look forward to
working on them.

APQC describes effective problem solving strategies in a descriptive yet easy to follow manner. The strategies are all diagrammed
and/or charted making them easy to understand. Although the book is directed at educators and some of our specific problems,
it could easily be used at other organizations and even with home decisions. Highly recommended!

Dory's book is a must read for everyone. It is inspiring, because she never gives up, even though the challenges she faces
are, at times, enormous. It is also somewhat frightening to discover the uncooperative nature of our public schools. As
the mother of a child with similar special needs, I recognize some of the struggles Dory faced. I will not give up!! She
is my hero:)
