"ELITE" STANFORD PROFESSOR INTERNED WITH THE REST

Review Date: 1999-06-25
Detailed and exhaustive book by/about Ichihashi who came to the US from Japan in 1984 at the age of 16 to study. He graduated from Stanford, got a Ph.D. from Harvard, became a professor at Stanford. He and his wife and son "relocated" to Santa Anita and then Tule Lake and then Granada (Amache) during WWII. He became embittered and an elitist during the war years, which is told in a very dramatic albiet exhaustive fashion in the book via his letters. Following relocation he and his wife returned to a very different Stanford University and environs, which he found very difficult to cope with. Very enjoyable book, personal as well as historical.

Vital contribution to Asian American and internment history

Review Date: 1999-05-21
Though long and at times cumbersome to read, this is a valuable addition to the literature in Asian American and World War II internment history. Yamato Ichihashi is an all but forgotten figure who has left a written record of his internment experience as he lived it, making this book a rare and important piece that all students of the internment should read. At the same time, this book belongs to the body of literature in Asian American social history. Who knew that in the early 1900s, Stanford University had a Japanese American professor among its faculty? What kind of life did he lead considering his anomalous position as an academic compared to other Japanese in America and the intense anti-Asian atmosphere of those times in the West? How does knowledge of this man's life enrich our understanding of Asian American history and American history at large? All of those questions are satisfyingly answered. Ichihashi's writings take center stage in the book, but Chang provides lucidly written annotations and a bibliographic essay that make the volume quite readable and enjoyable. Chang allows Ichihashi's words to speak for themselves which allows the reader to get a very vivid picture of life in the internment camps. In addition, reading his thoughts about his circumstances as an academic, a professor at Stanford, and an internee offer rare and revealing insights.

I got this book as part of my MSN program. I still refer to it frequently because it is a fantastic reference. It's easy to navigate, and it's easy to read. The advice in the book always seems so timely as well.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in teaching other nurses or in other similiar settings. I would also highly recommend it for the new Clinical Nurse Educator or Staff Development Specialist for its comprehensive discussion of the topics. It can certainly provide the basic knowledge one needs to know in order to do this job.

Having heard Gervais Phinn talk on an afternoon chat show describing his life as a schools inspector with humour and great dedication I was anxious to read his book "The Other Side of the Dale".

It was one of those texts which you find incredibly difficult to put down. I laughed out loud at his desciptions of answers given by small children and was able to relate them to my own experiences as an infant teacher.

He has the "gift of the gab" and enthralls his readers from the very first chapter.

One can tell by his writing that he is an honest and sincere person whose very love of life is the reason why he does the work he takes great delight in.

He shares every laugh & sometimes tear in a way that is as if he is an old friend and you are together catching up on news and gossip.

His character descriptions are vivid and allow you to picture this wealth of strange colleagues very clearly.

His romance with the "lovely Christine" is a joy to behold and I could hardly contain myself to wait for his second book to find out what happened.

He writes of his experiences with a truthful and interesting style which carries the reader along with him on his journey through country lanes and among the hedgerows of the farming communities where he travelled.

I felt that I was with him as he stood at picture windows looking out on the magnificent and striking views of the Dales.

There is a childlike quality in the way he sees life - it is honest and open. He writes of things he sees with an element of awe and wonder [like a child seeing their first aeroplane, balloon, etc.] and colours the pages with his glorious grasp of language.

I have read this text twice and listened to it being read by the author on audio-tape [A MAGNIFICANT EXPERIENCE! ]

I have also been fortunate to have obtained a copy of his second book "Over Hill and Dale" which is also up there with the best. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED READING [not just for those in education]

Vivid Character Sketches, Loving Pictures of a Unique Place

Phinn clearly loves children, schools and Yorkshire. His pictures of the countryside, of its stalwart but reserved people, and of their dialect, invite favorable comparison with James Herriott. This is a special place, largely unspoiled by McDonalds and internet chat rooms, and that alone is a reason to celebrate while reading the book.

Phinn observes and writes honestly, capturing with equanimity and good humor a range of personalities from child prodigy to tyrannical administrative assistant. Sure, there are dozens of portraits of cute kids who say funny things, and of dedicated teachers who have mastered the ineffable art of educating. These alone are worth the price of the book. But want a trenchant dissection of exactly what makes an annoying person annoying? Phinn lays it out, while maintaining his humor and emotional distance and never conveying any feeling that he is settling old scores.

And yes, there is the thread of his sometimes-stumbling courtship of the alluring Miss Bentley. That also keeps one turning the pages.

from STEVE HEYING's review in AMERICAN FALCONRY MAGAZINE:

Wow! What a tour-de-force this book Peregrine Quest is to experience. Author Clayton M. White guides - no - leads the reader on a worldwide expedition through his life long passion, that of the peregrine falcon and its environs. He accomplishes this by recounting retelling from his fields notes and memory the tales and stories of his life adventures from fifty some years of field work. Along the way, in this shared journey, one cannot help but also gain a deeper insight into the greater underlying meaning of living not just a good life, but rather a great life on this planet we call Earth. Through the vector of sharing with him his pursuit of all the knowledge of all that is of the peregrine falcon, Professor White exposes the reader of his book to that which is life on earth in any and all places he has come to fully experience. We are led to feel the wind, the rain or lack thereof, the bugs, the other birds, the sunsets, the heat and the cold, all the attributes of place as he has experienced these places. In each expose of each peregrine in its place and time, Professor White builds a complete picture of the circle of life within that particular place with photographs, word stories, and cameos of what he sees and feels and knows while he is there. He tries to cover all the important details, literally leaving no stone unturned. Professor White is an artist, working with a full palate of paints, using broad strokes so as to give color and texture to all of Alaska, or with the use of fine line vignettes to color one eyrie on one rock on one river in one special place in Alaska. With earth shattering conclusions or short incidental stories, Clayton builds pictures of time and space that put the reader there, and educate us as to how we should act or feel while we are there.

Any falconer with any experience or wishing to have any experience with a peregrine falcon either does owe or will eventually owe some part of that experience to Clay White. This book delineates the "why" of that truth and fact. If along the way of that "peregrine experience," if said falconer becomes a better human being as well, he may also owe that to Clay White or to the people Clay has influenced during his life time. Some of that knowledge and influence will come from this book and Clay White's lifetime work for future generations to tap into. This book is a "must have," and one that will be read over and over as a most enjoyable trip into Clay White¹s world and the peregrine experiences contained within.

If you're looking for a way to make students feel a part of the Middle Ages, the Civil War, Ancient Greece or Egypt, this book is a must have! The authors use literary or historical characters to introduce children to history--in a first hand way. Learn about medieval times by taking on the persona of King Arthur or Guinevere. Learn about the Civil War by being Grant or Lee. Understand ancient Greece and Egypt through the eyes of their mythological gods. Children will love this approach to history.

Pipe Dreams: One Teacher's Journey by A. R. Magaletta McClure is one of the best books I have ever read. She is captivating as she dicusses her eight years of teaching emotionally disturbed children. You fall in love with each of the children that she discusses and feel as if you are there with them. McClure discusses through the book all of the lessons that these children have been able to teach her. It is impossible to not be inspired by her warm stories and true-to-life struggles. ANYONE who teaches or is connected to children with disabilities in any way will be drawn into this book. This book also traces the different ways in which our public education system has dealt with students with disabilities throughout the seventies and early eighties. For all of these reasons, this book would be an excellent book for teachers to share in a book club and/or for professors to assign their students who are interested in teaching children with disabilities. Readers will find themselves laughing out loud as they hear about some of the various situations and antics that take place and will become emotionally involved with each of the children and their particular struggles. Pipe Dreams: One Teacher's Journey by A.R. Magaletta McClure is a rare find. Once you've read it, you will never look at education or our nation's children the same way again.

What a find! Who knew life on a school board could be so interesting? Despite the public school governance theme, Lister has written what should become an essential part of everyone's desktop library. In the style of Seth Godin, Ken Blanchard, John Maxwell, Stephen Covey, Max Depree, etc., but very readable, this small-town setting makes the examples and illustrations something everyone can relate to. An excellent read by a new writer, I'm glad I found it and look forward to seeing more from Lister. If you deal with the public in any way at all, I highly recommend this book. It will help make you more effective and the real-world examples will help you avoid pitfalls from which it could be difficult to recover.

I sat down to read a couple of chapters of this book, but put it down only long enough to eat. This book was written from the perspective of a dedicated school board chairman from a small community. However, the lessons in this book can be applied to any kind of service group (church administrative board, service club, etc.) Many organization have high hopes, but get bogged down and lose focus on what their mission is supposed to be.

Although a lot of the tips here can be found elsewhere, it is good to be able to find them all in one place. I suspect that I will refer to it often.

Thanks Gary!

combination of Antarctic History, the story of icebreakers and life
on the ice and a family tale. The snippets of history are a great
addition, It demonstrates a lot of research on the Antarctic.

Quest for Antarctica reflects our own quests

This is a moving account of one man's journey -- both literal and figurative -- a journey of exploration of the earth's last frontier to fulfill a boyhood dream and discovering truths of a secretive continent as well as uncovering surprising revelations about his roots and finding out who the true heroes are in life.
From the shock of a bad Navy report ("marginal imagination") to his subsequent leaps of imagination connecting the dots of his life's stations and his own most influential teachers, Barell reveals through experience, poetry and science his path from youthful dreamer through the frozen icepack of inner turmoil to becoming the inspired education professor urging teachers to take their own leaps of imagination in mentoring and nurturing inquisitive minds.
This is a deeply personal memoir which brings the reader in to a cozy wardroom to hear Navy and family stories, confront memories as turbulent as the seas on the way to Antarctica, overcome obstacles, learn from them and forge a hard-won way of fulfillment.
In full disclosure, I am the author's younger sister mentioned in this very personal account. I am so proud of his conquering the mysteries of Little America to establish his own base, creating a path of inquiry which encourages others to follow their own quests and discover their own Little America community. -- Robin Beck

Martin shares his life as a "Boomer Freshman", complete with rekindling of adolescent problems he had thought were long buried, with humor and candor, and meanwhile gives those of us who feel sheepish about not having actually read the Greek Classics painless synopses set against observations on the geopolitical dramas of today and the author's all-too-real concerns about his own mortality. Amazingly, he's combined all of this in a quick and satisfying read that makes you feel like you've done something to better yourself.

Interwoven themes of mid-life personal growth and recovery, contemporary college education commentary, and snippets of Ancient Greek literary wisdom, with a refreshing and upbeat message! This book has it all, from the serious to the humorous, as a tranformative tale of work, love, mind ,and body. It is uplifting and deftly done. The author describes a personal journey that adds new meaning to being a 'life-long learner'. And, he documents the life force of youth in current culture against a backdrop of literature that spans human history. It seems to me that he has captured the elan vital that exists across the generational divide. And, he shows us a perspective that tears down this divide, like the Fall of the Berlin Wall, to expose a very warm, human story that anyone, of any age, can relate to. It is a refreshing and uplifting read that leaves the reader a better person.
Having visited the St. John's College campus,in Annapolis, Maryland, several times, I can attest to the flawless accuracy of his descriptions of the college setting, activities, and staff.
