We have many Taro Gomi books, in both English and Japanese. His graphics are always amazing, and this gem is at the top of the list. The English translation here is great (as opposed to the dreadful "Where's the Fish?"), and my child loves the story of the bus as is winds through town. Especially nice is the touch near the end, where WE get off the bus at our house, placing the child into the story, then the driver gets off the bus at the end. Cute and snappy, a work of art that will engage child and parent alike.

My daughter has loved this book since she was a year old. At 2.5 years she still loves seeing where the bus goes on its route, who gets off, who misses the bus...She loves to answer the simple questions on each page. (Parents can always ask different questions when they get bored). The text and pictures are just right for the pre-speaking to pre-school age child. There is something on every page to captivate even the youngest child yet, there are so many interesting little details that older children remain interested. And for parents, get this, the bus stops at a movie set and who's in the director's chair but Akira Kurosawa with his white hat and sunglasses. Oh and who's that bearded actor? Toshiro Mifune. No kidding. This book is THAT cool.

My 20-month old loves this book, and with good reason. It's a fantastic example of a book that can grow with a toddler; at first he was most interested in the buses, then started noticing the cars, moved onto the trees, and now loves all the little people. It's a sweet book, gentle in tone. My toddler will spend 15 minutes at a time reading this one with me.
Popular with the toddlers!

I frequently give this book as a baby gift, and get reports back that it always becomes the baby's top favorite book, the one they want to read everyday over and over - and since it's mostly a visual book that lets the child explore objects and places, and has art-quality illustrations, parents enjoy it too. Taro Gomi's books don't aggressively teach, but just let a small child wander slowly and curiously through the pages, noticing things of interest, always discovering new details.

....By which I mean that if you buy this book and work through [ sorry about that, I _am_ English :-)) ] the test papers you will gain much valuable knowledge about driving in the USA. This means that you are more able to enjoy your holiday as you will know so much more about the rules and regulations that there are in the USA and so, hopefully(!), not fall foul of them! By the time I'd worked through the first two papers and read the detailed information towards the back of the book even I was getting 30+ correct answers! So, I'd definitely recommend this book to any fellow "Brit" who wants to be less of a hazard when driving in the USA. Finally, Alice herself was _most_ helpful when I emailed her with a query I had regarding the DMV in California. So not only a most helpful book, but also excellent feedback direct from the author herself. Do yourself a favour/favor(!!) and buy it :-)

I purchased the original "Califonia Drivers Test Made Easy" several years ago when I took my first CA driving test and again 5 years ago when my wife came down from Canada. In both cases it was an essential tool to make sure that we were ready for the test. Alice updates her book constantly and this is really needed because the CA driving laws change all the time.
Having scored well in the book tests gives you a really good level of confidence since practically 100% of the questions you will be asked are in the book.
So when I decided to take a CA Motorcycle test last year (which is a mix of regular driving test questions and motorcycle related questions) I went back and obtained the latest copy of Alice's book. Of course again, that was the right thing to do.
Bottom line: Alice book is a MUST for anyone that wants to take the CA Drivers test examination with the confidence needed to pass it.
I highly recommend Alice's book.

As an ordinary teacher with an extraordinary passion for educating people about the Holocaust, I find the Anthology and the Teacher's Guide to be unique in the world of Holocaust studies. The complimentary set is exactly what every Holocaust educator needs. Nothing is missing:The narratives are in themed, chronological order; the analyses are thorough and scholarly; and the thoughtful lesson plans are classroom-tested by experienced master teachers. The set is a priceless gift to educators and students alike.

The Call of Memory will prove to be an invaluable resource for teaching high school and college-age students about the Holocaust through literary narratives. Short stories by Holocaust survivors and contemporary writers are included in the anthology. For each selection, an in-depth literary analysis is provided by the accompanying Teacher's Guide. An entire Holocaust Literature curriculum could be developed using The Call of Memory. The companion volumes, however, are relevant not only to the study of literature and language arts but will also offer enrichment for courses in history, social studies, humanities and religion.
These books further remind us of why print still matters in the online age. Comparable Internet-based Holocaust instructional materials would be hard to find. Teachers will appreciate the chronological/thematic organization of the volumes along with the connection to content standards. Students will benefit from the occasion to read these literary selections in which vivid imagery and intimacy of characters and events promote an understanding of the Holocaust. As Elie Wiesel spoke in his 1986 Nobel Prize lecture, "Remembering is a noble and necessary act. The call of memory, the call to memory, reaches us from the very dawn of history."

In December 1941 Abba Kovner, hiding outside Vilna, understood that the Nazis were going to murder all Jews, though the facts at his disposal did not support his certainty. This was the clairvoyance of the poet at its clearest.
This anthology is so valuable precisely because poets and writers sometimes understand things better, and the Shoah is almost inexplicable. The anthology is accompanied by a volume in which scholars who are educators ponder how to understand and use the literature. Fascinating.

This book is truly a MUST for teachers of Holocaust literature. The 27 Holocaust narratives, which are in themed, chronological order, are a classroom treasure. This book provides the specifics to teach them thoroughly and wisely. The editors present options to introduce and personalize Holocaust history and are completely aware of what time constraints all teachers face. The stories are typically short in length but not short on substance. Details regarding methods and materials are provided in a clear manner.
For those new to teaching Holocaust literature, there are concise literary explications, readable and informative analyses and detailed personal commentaries to help even the novice teacher feel comfortable exploring this era. For those who have been teaching classic Holocaust novels and diaries, a wealth of short literature is interpreted here, affording teachers the opportunity to present an overview of the Holocaust or an in-depth study of its various aspects.
As an English teacher who teaches a unit on Holocaust lit, I can honestly say this is the best text on the market.

This Teacher's Guide is an excellent resource. The stellar literary selections in the complementary literary anthology provide the opportunity to delve more deeply into the work of one writer or to study various writers on the same topic. The analytic essay accompanying each narrative enriches background knowledge and stimulates critical thinking while the pedagogic essay provides clear, thoughtful suggestions and guidance. The 2-volume Call of Memory is a sensitive and valuable resource for those who choose to grapple with this daunting subject.

I have never written a review for amazon before, but feel compelled to do so now because this book is so wonderful. It is the best of its genre that I have read (and I read a LOT of parenting books). There are many wonderful suggestions on how to make your children's lives more calm and peaceful. It is perfect for all ages and all religions. The author is also fantastic- I emailed her for an outline for a study group based on the book, and she responded immediately! I always get my books from the library, but I refer to this so frequently (and can see myself doing so for years to come) that I am buying it!
Two Thumbs Up From The Magazine To Inspire Conscious Parenting & Empowered Kids

Review Date: 2007-04-01
I picked up the book yesterday and couldn't put it down. As publisher of a magazine to inspire conscious parenting and empowered kids, this book reminded me of the importance of helping kids settle down, breath, and connect to the world (and people) around them. It's full practical steps to apply in everyday life but what keeps the pages turning are the personal stories she relates. Some ideas we've heard over and over, such as using breath, movement or touch to soothe, but they serve as great reminders to put them back into our lives. Others are innovative, fun, and simple, such as giving your toddler two nickels to hold on to (one for each hand) to distract them while making a quick stop. Without giving too much away, the book offered a reminder that the way things are isn't necesarily the way they have to be. It IS possible for four 10-year-old boys to be kind, compassionate and gentle with a 4-year-old boy who interrupts their game. Empathy is essential for two humans to connect and understand one another. Empathy is what is lacking within families and in world politics. We started our magazine because we know that it is children who determine the future of the world. With conscious parenting and the ideas presented in this book, our kids have a hope for a more peaceful personal life and world situation.

With practical activities for children, this is more than just a book to be read. The stories and anecdotes are based are true experiences, and give insight to the author's own experiences with the many children she has helped to develop. Bringing kindness and calmness back into or children's life's is truly needed in today's highly stressed world.

I am so excited to find this series. My first grader loves mysteries, and these are well written. They are challenging enough, not intimidating with the print size, and have great pictures. Those are things that will capture his interest in the first place. They really do sound like a kid is talking. I think the thing I like the most is the choice of words that are used to describe coversations. Most of the books written for this age are "said," "asked," and rarely, things like "replied." This author uses much more interesting, descriptive words. I know that sounds trivial, but as an avid reader who hopes my son will continue to love reading as well, it's refreshing to see someone who takes time to pay attention to the choice of words that show how someone is talking, not just what they said.

How easy for people to throw in Bible verses right in your face and they think they just "fixed" your pain problem. By leaving Islam, I dealt with rejection as an outcast. I have also had a lot of anger and less trust in people after being betrayed. I have talked to many people of godly counsel, but frankly nobody is like Dan Montgomery. He is not in an ivory tower but he is right down to earth and meets you where you are in a compassionate way showing you how to truly apply the Bible principles in counseling that really"works". I liked a lot what he had to say on feeling God's presence even though when we don't feel like it. I had to read this part in his book over and over again. I even plan to translate to myself in Arabic, my native tongue, and apply it to myself as well as those I evangelize in the Muslim religion. This is "The Lean-Against-the Wall Technique" on pages 115,116,117 and 118. As I have come to explore the American male psyche, this part is the best answer that I can also give in response to the question of why I don't feel like my prayer just hit the wall and I can't feel God. If you read where I have begun all along in my Christian journey and how Dan has helped me, you would really appreciate his book enormously.

This book introduces the reader to the compass model and how to use it to zero in on exactly where a counselee is having problems. The compass theory is easy to understand and to apply in its basic form. Author Dr. Dan Montgomery has developed this technique and shares it with Christian Counselors as an effective counseling tool. Dr. Montgomery is well respected among his peers and has held a license as a Psychologist and Marriage and Family Therapist for over twenty-five years. He has taught at the Pepperdine University Graduate School of Psychology, the United States International University, and the University of New Mexico. His work and techniques are praised by the likes of the Yale Divinity School, Princeton Theological Seminary, and Fuller Theological Seminary.
In the book Dr. Montgomery covers the basics of the Compass system, the anatomy of a counseling session, dealing with the counselee's image of God, and using metaphors and symbolization in therapy. Appendix I provides basic commentary on twenty-five specific techniques that provide quality tools to aid the counselor. In the second appendix he even includes some short True/False self-assessment tests to help map out the counselee's position on the compass.
Written for the Christian Counselor these techniques and the compass model can be used not only by clinicians but also by pastors, chaplains, and others involved in this healing ministry. Christian Counseling that Really Works is highly recommended to everyone involved in counseling in any form.

Clifford is a wonderful children's character. Before Clifford was a Big Red Dog, he was a small red puppy. This is a good book for 3-100. It is about a big red dog that went to live with a girl named Emily Elizabeth who raised him and showed Clifford how to have a big heart. I think this book is wonderful for kids while learning to read.
I loved this book when I was 3 years old and I still love it and now I am 12. I just think that it is a fun book to read because it feels like you are with Clifford when he goes on his adventures. My favorite book of the ones that Bridwell has written is definitely Clifford's Schoolhouse. I just love the pictures and the flaps to the book. It comes in hard cover and paperback.
I really hope that my book review helped. I hope that you will buy this book for your child. I promise you they will like it for years to come.

This book has achieved suprisingly long-lived popularity among my two kids, who are now ages 6 and 4. They've enjoyed this book on and off for years. While other books will get some attention and then are dropped, this is one they seem to keep coming back to.
Though it's only 10 pages, there's a lot here: shapes, colors, numbers, letter and basic nursery rhymes. The kids love the tactical fun of the lift-a-flap discoveries, and that's a good way for them to learn.

I am currently studying medicine and got this book to help get a handle on the renal system and acid-base topics. I found it easy to understand, with good detail and lots of extra information. The case studies are a great way to illustrate the different conditions. I would definitely recommend it if you are keen to get a handle on (or master) acid-base and electrolyte physiology and disorders.

An impressively lucid and detailed account of renal physiology, with a close focus on the clinical causes and implications. It is intensely practical, with up to date references (at time of publication) and sifting exerecises at the end of each chapter.
It is precisely what far too many 'nephrologists' have all but forgotten in their obsession with immunology, studying the aetiology of injury is all well, but without a text like this it's difficult to appreciate the intricacy, beauty and sheer majesty of renal physiology. Can you tell the difference between tubulo-glomerular feedback and glomerulotubular balance? - shame on the 'forensic pathologists' who can't! This book will provide rapid relief.

I found this book to be very useful in understanding the subject of acid base and electrolyte disorders. I recommend it for all physicians especially those working in emergency room, intensive and cardiac care units. In fact it is very helpful for all doctors working in the different clinical fields. It is simple and easily digested.
Outstanding text, but consider "The essentials" for a lighter read

No doubt, this is a terrific textbook and is a great resource for Nephrology fellows, ICU fellows and general physiologists. However, for the med student or housestaff who would like to digest the basics of renal electrolyte handling and acid-base homeostasis, I'd like to recommend "Renal Pathophysiology the Essentials" by B.D. Rose and H.G. Rennke (ISBN: 0683073540). It is from 1994 and may lack some of the molecular details, but is an even more "readable" text.

The Second edition of Clinical Sports Medicine is the best reference book I have come across as an athletic therapist and professional fitness and lifestyle consultant. I find it very easy to navigate with great illustrations and information. The references are all very recent and evidence-based so you feel confident in following the authors' recommendations. It is particularly good value at 67 US dollars - most hardcover books of this size are about twice that price. The corresponding website has updated information, including relevant published papers, which I find quite helpful also. These authors have really done a fabulous job of classifying sports medicine information in a logical and easy-to-use format. I highly recommend it to anyone in the sports, fitness, and/or health fields!

The second edition (2001) of this work is indeed an outstanding resource. My daily work includes imaging of sports and musculoskeletal injuries. I find this book frequently useful to supplement deficiencies in my knowledge and experience, and a most useful companion to the second edition (2001) of "Musculoskeletal Ultrasound" by Marnix van Holsbeeck and Joseph Introcaso.
Highly recommended as a workbench resource to those interested in imaging of sports injuries.

My son was ONE when we purchased it, and loved it enough to ask for it every day for several months. Now he's almost 2.5, it was at the bottom of the pile for awhile, but now he loves it all over again. WE both love the colorful pictures, and there are cute things to look for, things that you may not notice the first few times you go through it. LIke the driver in one car has a somewhat angry expression, like he wants to run over the lady that is crossing the street. I think it's funny, it's not obvious and cruel, just something that as a grown up, you may notice, that flies over the child's head. Or like, on the hospital page, the patients are Green... get it? green, sick? Too cute! ANd one guy is wrapped up in bandages like a mummy from head to toe. Each page has things it asks you to point out. But you can easily find more things for the child to notice. My son just loves it. I think it is especially appealling to kids that like cars, trucks and busses. But girls will like it too... it's not full of those things, but there are enough of them in there. It is so colorful, and it's fun to ask the child to find an orange car, or a yellow house. There's even a little kitty cat wandering in the crowd on the marketplace page.
This is a very sweet book for a child... I'd say from One - Four years old, but I have no doubt mine love it enough to thumb through it himself when he's older, or maybe it will be a book he learns to read from. Great overall, I'd say one of our top 10 books! It's my favorite book in the "it doesn't have a deep message, and doesn't rhyme" category.
