If you are considering buying any guide for Check Point Firewall-1 NG buy this one first and forget the rest.

Don't let the author's "phoneboy" aka make you think twice. This is one of the best guides I have ever read. Most are dry boring and overly technical. This guide is a very easy read, it is well written and to the point and covers all aspects of Check Point Fire Wall thoroughly.

Welch-Abernathy has taken great care to present installation, configuration and troubleshooting in a manner anyone will understand, whether you are seasoned pro or just getting started. He has covered all OS models and taken many of the trobleshooting questions from his site FAQs at www.phoneboy.com and shown examples of how to understand and correct them. In addition to actual Q and A, he outlines the step by step sample configurations excellently with actual scripts, screenshots, notes and diagrams.

Welch-Abernathy also guides you through creating network structures on a scale that allows someone new to Check Point to design and impliment smallto medium network configurations in easy to manage ways.

The author starts out buy giving a great overview of firewall security technologies and there relation to OS Models while comparing the benifits and short comings of both.

Welch-Abernathy then guides you through the installation and developing your rule base. He includes tables and charts to show examples of each and backs up his examples with the most common Q&As making an installation seem like a breeze.

The authors explanation of remote access, NAT and high availability servers don't get any simpler. Any Admin who needs load balancing and fail over on a server cluster should keep this
guide around for refferance as well as daily use.

In addition to the main body of knowledge Welch-Abernathy also includes a great appendex covering OS Bastion security that is not only simple it is direct as well. Also included in the Appendices are a use policy template, ldap configuration, fine tuning for performance and two pages of concrete internet resources.

The author starts out buy giving a great overview of firewall security technologies and there relation to OS Models while comparing the benifits and short comings of both. I also found his overview and specifics of the licensing to be very helpfull.

Welch-Abernathy then guides you through maze of the installation process and developing your rule base. He includes tables and charts to show examples of each and backs up his examples with the most common Q&As making an installation seem like a breeze.

His examples of authentication, encyption and vpn make this a must read for anyone running Check Point on a corpoarte network.

I also found his overview and specifics of the licensing to be very helpfull as well.

If you are running Check Point Firewall-1 or considering using Check Point Firewall-1 you won't go wrong by putting this one in your library.

The best technical text I've read.

Alot of subjects in IT and security are covered over and over with a mass of books that may be a little better or a little worse, but are essentially identical. While Checkpoint is a less crowded topic than, say, NT Administration, I suspect this book will continue to stand out. In researching Checkpoint issues I've been struck by the extent to which "Phoneboy" is personally identified with the topic, both by newbies and by seasoned professionals. It's for good reason. This book is extremely thorough (within its scope) and brings alot to the table in the way of the details that a professional would need. I've read alot of technical texts, but this one stands out, both generally and with the specific topic. The book is written well, with a good structure and giving useful examples. I found the bug reports and known issues particularly useful. As a technical resource it seems unmatched. It was an excellent resource, both on the job and in earning my CCSA.

Each chapter of the book starts off with describing what the reader will learn or accomplish by reading that chapter. This sort of information is helpful for allowing readers to skip information that may not be useful to them and find the answers they seek. Many of the chapters also contain FAQ's and sample configurations and illustrations to help reinforce the information.

The book tries to cover a very broad scope and apply to a wide audience. It contains information all the way from holding the readers hand if they are new to Checkpoint Firewall-1 NG to providing detailed troubleshooting and configuration steps for experienced Checkpoint administrators.

I have never administered a Checkpoint firewall personally, but I found the information mostly straight forward and understandable. Again, this is not a book one would typically read casually, but for anyone who administers a Checkpoint firewall or is looking at installing a Checkpoint Firewall-1 NG system this is an excellent source of information.

Hands down the best book on FW-1 available

Review Date: 2002-06-16
Checkpoint FireWall-1 has become one of the top firewall software products in the industry. There are many reasons for its predominance. It was the first commercial
firewall on the market, but more importantly, the FireWall-1 GUI and its ease of use impressed corporate CIO's.

Although FireWall-1 is easy to use, some users face difficulty in configuring the product correctly and appropriately. In fact, one of the biggest dangers of a firewall is that it can
provide a false sense of security; if not properly configured, a firewall may have so many holes that it actually functions as nothing more than a router. Firewall expert Marcus
Ranum notes that, "...eventually, if enough data is going back and forth through your firewall, it is no longer a firewall -- it is a router."

Many times, firewall administrators are hired not because of their expertise in information security, but because they know network and systems administration quite
well. Many FireWall-1 administrators start with zero experience and knowledge. This is good from a job security and training perspective, but terrible from a security perspective.
Despite the proliferation and ubiquitous nature of FireWall-1 over the past decade, it is only in the last few months that any worthwhile books on FireWall-1 have become
available. One of the best is Essential Checkpoint Firewall-1: An Installation, Configuration, and Troubleshooting Guide by Dameon Welch-Abernathy. Welch-
Abernathy maintains a Web site, ..., which contains information on anything and everything related to FireWall-1. In fact, many FireWall-1 administrators have
... bookmarked as their prime site for FireWall-1 information, even before the Check Point support site.

Although the documentation that comes with FireWall-1 is quite good, Essential Checkpoint Firewall-1 often surpasses it. This is what makes Welch-Abernathy known as
the man for FireWall-1. Even Nir Zuk, who was a principal engineer at Check Point, stated that Welch-Abernathy's knowledge of FireWall-1 in many cases surpassed the
knowledge of Check Point's own engineers.

As its title implies, the book covers the installation, configuration, and troubleshooting of FireWall-1. Whereas the product itself is pretty straightforward to install (except for the
software license information), the real challenge is in the post- installation arena. The book has 14 chapters and, by Chapter 3 (page 34), the book is already into FireWall-
1. Other books often include up to 100 pages of filler on topics such as computer secrity, cryptography, threats, etc., and don't get to the main subject until half way through the
book. Chapter 4 of this book provides a thorough overview of how to build a rulebase. The chapter describes the various fields and objects that need to be created for the
firewall to be effective. Although the simplicity of the Check Point GUI is obvious, the definition of names, network objects, and so forth, must be carefully planned -- especially
for rollouts of FireWall-1 in large enterprise environments.

Chapter 8 provides an excellent overview of content security. FireWall-1 is built on its patented Stateful Inspection capabilities, but it has other security facilities including CVP
(Content Vectoring Protocol), UFP (URL Filtering Protocol), and others. The chapter describes much of the secondary content protection capabilities of FireWall-1. Such

capabilities are crucial in light of the volume of information that passes through corporate firewalls (including streaming media, email, files, Java, etc.).

Essential Checkpoint Firewall-1 covers all the crucial topics that any FireWall-1 administrator needs to know. From authentication, VPN, logging, high availability, and
more, it is all there. This is what makes Essential Checkpoint Firewall-1 the book of choice for FireWall-1.

Lives up to its title!

This is one of those rare books that delivers what the title claims. It gives in-depth instructions on Firewall-1 installation, configuration and troubleshooting, and also includes additional material on security and networking that goes beyond what the title promises.

What I especially liked about this book are the little details that have a big impact if they're overlooked. Notable examples include:

(1) Quick, but thorough, introduction that provides an overview of firewalls at a general level, and the key features and benefits of Firewall-1 in particular.
(2) Issues, such the need for a security policy, are addressed early on. This is an important consideration and the author goes beyond merely highlighting the need by giving you a brief template to use in creating one.
(3) Guide through the labyrinth of Check Point's Firewall-1 licensing schemes - this is a nice touch because mastering the technology is a less daunting task then figuring out Check Point's sales strategy.
(4) Strengths and weaknesses of candidate operating systems, and a straightforward process for installing and configuring Firewall-1. The latter is a strong point because you'll benefit from the author's extensive experience and will save time by having a strategy instead of getting bit by obscure issues and learning painful lessons.

I like the way that each section ends with frequently asked questions. The author anticipates and answers common questions about installation, configuration and troubleshooting. Because of the way this book is structured it can serve as an off-the-shelf implementation and maintenance guide, eliminating the need to develop this material in-house.

This is one of the best written and well thought-out technical guides that I've had the pleasure of reading. It sets a high standard for similar books, but more importantly, it so completely covers Firewall-1 that you won't need anything but this book to implement and support this product.

The Everything Kids' Science Experiments Book is an ideal book for older school age children for Science projects. The experiments offer a detailed investigation into each concept being explored by children. Many of the experiments do require adult supervision due to the complexity of some of the experiments that require multiple steps. It is most suitable for middle school and early high school students. Additional facts related to the concept being explored are mentioned to peak the science student's interest in the topic. The experiments require moderate to extensive planning by teachers or parents while supporting the young learner.

My 2-year old follows this story pretty well (it has a repetitive-type storyline) and caught on quickly to the page turn cues (siren). He loves all the sound effects throughout the story. The illustrations are eye catching as well and help tell the story for a child that doesn't read yet. The price is reasonable considering how hard these cassette read-along are to find!

Great Fireman Book, Great Bedtime Story

Review Date: 2005-12-10
I picked this up thinking that it would be another good fireman book for my fireman-obsessed five-year-old. It certainly is that, but the flow and the structure also make it an excellent help-your-child-to-fall-asleep story. The basic plot is that Fireman Small is very tired and keeps trying to go to bed, but each time he does some new emergency happens that forces him to get up one more time. When he's done with the last one, everybody thanks him for all his help and he oh-so-happily drifts off to sleep. I usually read him several stories at bedtime, but I like to make sure that this is the last one; by the time we're through with it he's usually nodding off.

One small problem; Wong seems to have a unique sense of rhythm, which makes this harder to read aloud then you might expect; it took me a couple of readings before I felt that I had gotten it completely right. With practice, though, it flows beautifully.

This book simply and progressively guides a student in grasping the complexities of the Latin language. An ideal Latin resource for reinforcing what one has already learned, reviving what one may have forgotten, and for those that are new to Latin - this book gently reaches out, and effectively teaches you the foundation of the Latin language.

After dinner, I spend a few minutes going over a couple lessons with my wife. She is amazed that she is actually learning sentences from the beginning of the course. The next lesson builds on the previous lessons which reinforces what she has previously learned.

I will be teaching Latin to an 8th grade class this year. I will leave a review after this year to inform you how the kids did with the material. Until then - Sine labore nihil

I just started using the book Getting Started With Latin about a week or so aga with my son and daughter and it is amazing at how much we've learned thus far. In fact, my son began using the book before I and my daughter and it amazed me as how quickly he was able to catch on and understand the chapters that he had already previewed. I really like the bite size lessons that Linney uses as well as the pronunciations and commentary's that are downloadable from his website. I also appreciate how in each chapter he sort of reviews the material that was learned in the previous chapter making it very repitious and easy to memorize and understand. Being knew to Latin I am amazed at how much we've picked up so far. I love the correlation between the Latin and English words as well. Its a lot of fun! I will be homeschooling my son this year and one fot he courses that he will take is Latin and I feel that this is going to give us a jump start at it working with it throughout the summer. The one thing I wished were included is a pronunciation for the latin expressions that he gives in the book. Otherwise, this book is really a great resource and very user friendly.

If this is your first experience with Latin, Getting Started with Latin, is the book for you. This 206 page book, with answer key, is written for those who want to learn Latin on their own or teach it to children. After purchasing many Latin resources to help me with my first year of Latin, Mr. Linney's book was by far the MOST helpful resource available to me. Getting Started With Latin gave me the opportunity to learn Latin at my own pace using short lessons and an easy to understand approach. Additionally, William Linney offers a FREE pronunciation CD on his web site, [...]. How many companies offer that? He really does want the consumer to love learning Latin. Throughout his book, Linney adds Latin expressions and their meanings. For example, on page 75 he explains what the c. and ca. mean before a date. If you haven't embarked on your journey with Latin, you really don't know how confusing Latin can be to learn, especially on your own. GSWL will be the best investment you ever made! Check it out for yourself. You will NOT be sorry!

My 11 year old son is crazy about this book! He has taken French and Spanish at school with little retention. Curiously, he requested to learn Latin. After much curriculum research, I found Mr. Linney's book and website. Since we received this very affordable book with free audio support via his website, we are all happily learning Latin. My son, however, has been carrying the book around with him and teaching all of his friends who, it turns out, are interested, too. The lessons are short and easy. Mr. Linney's voice is pleasant and easy to understand on his MP3 commentaries. Even the most easily frustrated student can accomplish a good start with this book.

THE Starting Line for Learning Latin

Review Date: 2008-03-12
This book is EXCELLENT and really does allow the reader to understand beginning Latin without the pretentiousness (unintended or otherwise) of other methods. It is EXTREMELY user-friendly and allows for Latin to be picked up as quick as the user is willing to learn.

I use it in educating my ten year old son and he loves it! He quickly gets excited when posed with Latin quizzes asking him to translate sentences/phrases to and from English. (He just told me today that Latin is his favorite subject and I believe it's mine, too. I find myself now spending my free time with the author's materials just wanting to learn more, because it is SO accessible).

The lessons are short but "sweet as pie" because they are strong in content. I really like how the author gives you examples and exercises to help the content solidify in your mind. Once it's in your hands you know you are not wasting your time.

Common Latin expressions we hear and/or see are explained throughout the book are an added plus. The author even has additional online support (in MP3 format) for the text in case you are having difficulties at www.gettingstartedwithlatin.com/, so you are not without additional help.

Bottomline: get this book. You will not regret it in the least and you have so much to gain from it.

I originally won a consultation package with Geri Goldstein and only had one phone conference with her. During our meeting, I also ordered a copy of this book. Since I have received this book (two years ago) I have not had to call her due to the extremely vast amount of knowledge already contained in her book!! Every time I have another question that I would think of asking her, I open this book and find the answer and much more. This is the most intricately detailed book on self promotion that I have ever acquired. I still have not covered all the ground this book contains?! I highly recommend this book to aspiring artists, agent and managers.

This past weekend I attended a Jewish Social Action weekend with 100 others hoping to have a good time and try to change the world around me and bring smiles to peoples faces. I had no idea that in the course of this weekend I would get to hear a man named Scott Fried speak. Scott Fried is one of the most amazing people I have met in my life. This book doesn't just tell the story of Scott Fried, a Jewish Homosexual from New York, it tells the story of what we all feel inside. It explains the values of self-respect and knowing that you are sacred. It pushes you to look deep within your self, and find the person you are not the person you want others to see. I would highly recommend that all of you get a chance to hear Scott in person because it truly is a life changing experience. I borrowed this book from a family member, and though it was painful, I read every one of Scott's words. The bravery and courage it took to record so much pain should be looked upon as heroism. This book is a must read for anyone who feels as though they are hiding something (and that is all of us).

This book discussed the facts of life that the great majority of us would like to ignore. It is not only personal, but extremely factual as well. I had the extreme pleasure of watching Scott speak, and it was a life changing experience. Intrigued, I purchased the book not knowing what to expect. What I got was a soul searching book that not only educated me on a myriad of different subjects, but most importantly educated me about the will to survive. It taught me about how one man had overcome so much, and how willing he was to share his feelings for the benefits of others. This is written with excellent grace and bravery. It is recommended for anyone who is not afraid to look within themselves after read how one man did.

This book was really valuable to me, and I encourage anyone who needs help on the SAT (don't we all?) to consider it. The practice is broken down into analogies, critical reading, and sentence completion. I'm really good at verbal, but the analogies always killed me. Once I got Kaplan's help and practice, however, my analogy scores shot WAY up. It also helped me with critical reading and sentence completion. I like the way Kaplan breaks it down into 7 or 10 minute drills. It's the best way to learn. The vocab list at the back is also really good. I only memorized about 30 of those words... and just out of that, 5 or 6 showed up on the SAT I took. Crazy!

I can't tell you how wonderful it was to go into the SAT and not feel panicked or stressed. I actually had extra time! The first time, I couldn't even get through the whole SAT. But after using Kaplan, I didn't feel nearly as anxious. I knew the format, understood how to approach the test, and was very familiar with the specific questions. And I'm a good test taker - I already knew all the basics. This book provides specialized strategy, which is incredibly valuable, and makes things easier to understand.

All in all, I went from a 660 to a 760 on verbal. Combined with the math workbook, I raised my SAT score 150 points. I give Kaplan the credit... well, most of it. :) I'm really glad I had these books, and I would reccommend them for basically anyone.

This Kaplan Verbal SAT Workbook really does work. It WILL raise your scores.

After using this book in hopes of being able to tackle the "level 4" and "level 5" questions on the SAT I Verbal section I was not very impressed with the level of difficulty the Kaplan SAT Verbal Workbook provided. Most of the questions in the analogy and sentence completion section are the lower level questions on the SAT I Verbal. It is quite common for the last questions in the SAT I Verbal section to have very difficult vocabulary. However, in the Kaplan's SAT I Verbal Workbook, you will find questions that are labeled by CollegeBoard with a difficulty rating of somewhere around three, sometimes four, and very rarely, five. On the other hand, this book provides a very good set of problems in the Critical Reading Sections. In addition to an accurate model of the actual exam (to some extent), the answer explanations are very clear compared to other prep books. Overall, I would give this a 4 out of 5 because, while it does prepare you well for the SAT I Verbal, if the person using this book was only to use this book, he would discover on the SAT I that the analogies that are level 4 and 5 will be rather difficult for him.

I am aware that there is a vocabulary section in the book, however, a large part of practicing analogies and sentence completion is getting used to using difficult vocabulary words in actual problems

With just a few days left before my March testing date, I purchased this book and did a few sections, most notably the anologys. My score increased by 70 points with just two 20 minute practice sections which put my verbal score over 700.

I have a question....

Hi, I am a high school student about to start preparing for the SAT. After reading through the reviews of various SAT books, I found that this one was probably one of (if not) the best. I have already taken the ACT; however, I know that I did terrible on it. So, I have decided to switch to the SAT instead. The thing that I was wondering was about how much time would you say it takes to effectively study this book (ALONG WITH an SAT Math section book)? I'm hoping for 1500+ on my ACT, so I was wondering what the approximate time frame is for two of these books. Thank you!

This book is a must-need if you are struggling in the verbal section of the SAT*. This book guides you with the the main concepts and steps you need to be able to boost your score up (i went from a 420-590). It has lots of questions to make sure you can apply the methods they give you. By the time you finish this book the verbal section feels so much easier. And yea if you are that type of person slacks off (like me) and can't be bugged to learn all the vocab, IT'S OKAY because the methods in the book are enough to boost your score. The vocab is that little extra push.
THe practice tests at the end of the book mirror the real SAT very well and is good practice for the real SAT*. And all the questions u get wrong are covered by a detailed explanation to why it is wrong and they give you the meanings of the word if its a sentence completion or analogy question.

I bought this book because I wanted to read something related to spelling to my 2nd graded daughter, but it was too difficult for her, and made her loose interest. Maybe in 1 or 2 years will be better.

I would definately recommend this book to teachers and parents of children in at least 3rd grade. This narrative book has unique and wonderful way of introducing so many vocabulary words. You can find something new each time you read it. Also it addresses quite well dealing with embarrassment. Sage is a great tool to start a discussion about how we can deal with making mistakes in a graceful mannor. Brush up on your vocabulary today!

This is a great book. It really helps students that need a visual aid for alliteration and dictionary skills. I use this as a brush up on vocabulary and as a cute little time eater!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I was excited to share it with my fifth grade class, and they were mesmerized from the very first words...and I began with the Extra Credit Assignment! Anyone who could have watched the enjoyment on the faces of those students would have already ordered their copy of this book. I can tell it was a hit because every student has requested to read it again themselves.

Buy this book! You will not be disappointed!

I am currently a student of Dr. Moini, and I bought this book while taking his Anatomy I class. I have continued to use it throughout the rest of my Anatomy classes, and it is still very helpful. This book is very helpful; it makes learning even the most complicated things easy. Dr. Moini's book has been an invaluable resource to me so far, and I am sure that it will be just as helpful while reviewing for the CMA exam. I highly recommend this book - it's an excellent way to study!

I've been reading this to my one-year-old every night before bed, and she never tires of it. It is made of sturdy pages with big (also sturdy)flaps for little hands to lift. She loves playing peekaboo, so this book delights her, and she squeals everytime she sees her face at the end. I love this book so much, I intend to keep it in my "library" of books so that my grandchildren can enjoy it someday!

My son recieved this book for his 1st birthday and it was an instant hit. It was a fun enjoyable read for him, but the flaps are super flimsy and he had torn most of the book apart within 6 weeks. He's 15 months now and the book has been out of rotation for some time. :(

My boys loved this book. It actually lasted through one and passed on to the next extremely well! Each flap puts a smile on my little one's face. Its a great purchase.

Great book - not just for the age limit.

We received this when my son was 15 months and he has loved it since. Initially, he just loved to lift the flaps, and it has handled his roughness. With the great pictures, we also use it to ask him to find an animal on a given page or within the whole book.

Love this book-first one my baby got!

This is the sweetest book-after many many readings I am buying a new one since most of the flaps are gone and been "loved." This was my daughter's first book when she was 4 months old-she's loved it since the first time we read it. Hope your little one enjoys it too!
