How could you golf in New England without it?

This is the definitive book for public golf in New England. The coupons alone pay for the book at least 10 times over each year. And each year it keeps getting better. The database is accurately maintained and always up to date. Tee times, phone numbers, course ratings, slopes, tips for each course, you name it, it's in this book. I wouldn't think of starting a year of golf in New England without it.

Practical Advice from Someone who has Been There Before
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-08-05
The very small library, especially the 'One Person Library' (OPL), has all of the problems of a big library but with litle or no help to handle the multiple tasks. Books must be ordered, checked into the system, checked out and back in, and eventually disposed of. In addition to all this there are the problems of any other business or organization: budgets, technology, the impact of the internet and planning for the future.

This book covers all of these aspects of small library management including ten brilliant comments on time management (Sample: Myth: Get more done, and you will be happier. Truth: No, you will just get more done.)

All in all, this book reeks of the experience of one who has 'been there, done that.' She clearly has worked in small libraries and had the ability to understand what she was doing, what was going on, how this differed from big libraries and what was taught in library school.

The last half, or maybe a bit more, of the book is on resources that vary from using computers to the legal aspects of copyrights, seeking grants to professional organizations, and many more.

One point not mentioned is the effective use of volunteers. I mention this only because this is a strength and a weekness in many public libraries - and in hopes that something might be added in the next edition.

A wealth of practical and useful tips for librarians

Rock Record: I had these books published in the 1980's and have been publishing them myself since 1990. The latest versions are available from my web sit. I also have all the data on a cd rom called RockRom. You can find me on the web by searching for Terry hounsome. I also have old copies of some of these books if you want a signed copy

When I saw the first edition of this, 1983, it looked like a miniature UNIX spreadsheet: tractor-fed 132 column wide paper, shot down and printed sideways in a paperback, COOL! The list went by band, but the index was by artist, ie: Paul McCartney, B4, W12, where B4 and W12 are Beatles and Wings. Very easy to follow, the band code is printed in the main listing right next to the name. A very simple and elegant approach to a large amount of information, very obscure detail (good). Needed updated at the time I saw it, so keeping it new will give this guy a career. Good for him, one of the first with a well-needed database of music.

What is beneficial to you as a writer, what do you need to make your career in the writing world possible? A guide to bring you a step closer to reaching your dreams.
If you are starting out as a new writer, whether you want to get into or do write poetry, e-books, articles, even audio books, or have been writing for awhile and want a little help getting published and recognized. This practical guide is for you.

Concise explanations of definitions, detailed examples of the different types of publishers, book reviewers, editors, literary agents, etc. Followed by names of companies and a brief description of what formats they want and the genres they are interested in. It also includes links to their websites, e-mail addresses and who to contact, what they offer and prices to get you started on the road to a successful writing career.

A lot of research and patience has gone into this book; well arranged and methodical, easy to read and written in plain English. Although many of the website links provided were unfortunately not connecting, do not exist or the domain name had expired. It would be hard to keep a guide like this updated as so many websites do not always survive, but otherwise it has very useful information.

For those of us who do not know or understand the writing world language and where to start, this book is a great first step on your road to becoming a successful writer. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is trying to start a career in the writing world.

As an author as well as freelancer, this reader of Ms. Jackson's book has provided invaluable information on the how-to's and wheres to gain access to almost any question a writer could ask. Organized in easy to read, well organized and informative sections and topics, Ms. Jackson offers her experience and know how to both novice and veteran writers. An added bonus is her easy, friendly manner in approaching her topics, and the friendly way in which she offers advice. I felt like I was getting advice from an old friend.

Online Resource Guide for Law Enforcement

A perfect online reference book and an easy read.
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.

While reading Dees' book, I began to feel like Humphrey Bogart in The Treasure of the Sierra Madre: "Everything's clear now." For those of us "tweens" who were born in the era of the manual typewriter and have learned to speak "computer," but with a severe accent, this book in invaluable. For years, we've had to listen to the computer pros talking about POPs, DIMMs, ISDNs, ITPs, and FTPs and all we could do is nod our heads in understanding. Dees takes these concepts, and many others, and puts them in a form that is clear, concise and understandable.

Dees walks you through what you need to know: hardware, ISPs, Microsoft Outlook, e-mail, newsgroups, and the worldwide web. While Dees could overwhelm you with lots of technical jargon, he writes in plain English which is understandable and easy to follow. I found myself sitting at my computer and working through many of the steps that Dees discussed. His discussion of online security and protecting yourself was especially useful in these days when privacy is often compromised.

This book was written primarily for the law enforcement community, but it is equally relevant to those who just want to learn the basics of computer hardware and become more efficient online.

Online Resource Guide for Law Enforcement isn't just for cops-it's for everyone.

A perfect online reference and an easy read.

This is a great resource for anyone taking a French class. From a beginner to an expert, anyone could benefit from this little guy. The verb charts at the end really help.

Must have for French class!

When I started my French class, I had the textbook and the workbook. I decided that it would be good to get a French dictionary. This dictionary has been great. I have learned several new words that I won't have learned in class. Using the concepts for verb conjugation in class, I was able to apply what I had learned to the words I was looking up in the dictionary.

The back of the dictionary has a section on French verbs. Since that has been my major weakness, I thought that it was a great resource for studying.

Found out about the book - People to People, Poland - by accident. Before we left England on a tramp steamer I phoned a fellow mentioned in the book from Gdansk who offered such hospitality to my self and my friend. We were accepted as guests by his family for two days. Without the book we wouldn't have met some splendid people and wouldn't have had our eyes opened to their warmth and generosity. This experience has been repeated time and again.

An excellent way to write to and learn about real people.

I knew I would be going to Lithuania for a dance festival that occurs every 4 years. This was the first time (in 1994) since the country was returned to freedom from behind the Iron Curtain. It was also the first time my mother returned after 50 years! I picked a few people from different cities based on a few characteristics listed in the book: age, what they like to do, and how much Enlish they knew (my Lithuania is quite basic). My longest pen-pal, now friend, have been corresponding for years. She invited me to stay in her empty flat for all three weeks! She even met us at the airport when we arrived with an armload of flowers - a big tradition in the eastern bloc countries. She showed us many places, we met with her family, we went to her beach house on the opposite side of the country. I visited other people I met in the book in other towns. One person gave me ideas of places to go, another I met in the town where my mother grew up. My mother and I met up with some relatives of ours in other towns, went driving to many smaller places and really learned a lot about how life has changed since the forties, and since the Soviets were driven out. I picked people who from their 20s to their 40s. One was an artist, one a translator, a student, a newspaper writer, a homemaker, and a teacher. Two did not write back, but I made many friends a learned a lot about the people of Lithuania and how they lived. To me, that is more important than sitting in a hotel room, or taking a bus tour; it is the people who make up a country. This book provides a way for People to meet People. I highly recommend it, or others in this series. Poland is next for me.
