I used this book for our hundred days of school party. I teach pre-k and they got a kick out if it. The pictures were great and the counting was fun and easy for them to do. I highly recommend this book!

An absolute delight for young children learning to count!

Harris has put the concepts of counting into a truly delightful book for the young reader and teachers of young readers. Each section of the book invites the reader to fill in a conclusion which draws young readers into the book, its bright, attractive pictures, and the idea of being able to count all the way to 100!

Trudy has done something with her book "100 Days of School" that I haven't seen for a while. She has created a color book, a counting book, a math book, a rhyming book, and, of course, a fun book all in one. That takes talent, and a lot of it, to combine these four types of books without making the work so busy that the child loses interest. Also, the book is all about school and even teaches math etc., but guess what? The reader doesn't even become aware that he/she's being taught. That's the true art of children's writing.

Beth Griffis Johnson does wonderfully with the illustrations. She has given the book a zesty, almost celebration look. And there's plenty to look at after the text has been read. I think this book could be a favorite for your children. I bought it for my future grandchildren . . . whenever that's going to be...

Spectacular Book!

Everything you always wanted to know about deacons

If you are just beginning the quest for the deaconate or you want to know the role of the deacon in the Catholic Church, this book is for you. It answered every question I had and then some. I found it very informative and an "easy read". Since it's in a question and answer format, I could stop and start at any point without feeling I had to finish a chapter. It is very helpful in distinguishing how the roles of bishop, deacon and priest are related and how they are regarded in the Church hierarchy.

This book is written so that you are able to understand clearly what the Diaconate is all about. I received a lot of insight from reading these questions and answers. I belong to the American Catholic Church and being a woman that will become a permanent Deacon in our Faith Community this book has helped me to understand more fully the responsibilities and the background of this position. I urge anyone who is called by God to be ordained as a priest or a permanent Deacon to read this book.

Dispels the mystery and ignorance about deacons

I am applying for the diaconate program in our diocese, and this fast-reading book was an excellent introduction to the role of the deacon in the Catholic Church. Despite the renewed emphasis on deacons since Vatican II, there is still a lot of ignorance about the deacons' responsibilities and the nature of their sacrament of ordination. This book explains how deacons are different from priests and bishops, and yet how they are similar, as well. I have found it invaluable in my discernment about being called to the diaconate.

Great Explanation for Roman Laity, Fair for Others
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2005-07-13
With the restoration of the vocational diaconate in several denominations has come a broad based lack of understanding of what and who deacons are. This is true of both laity and clergy. This little volume goes a long way towards addressing that lack of understanding.

It is written by a Roman Catholic for Roman Catholics with Roman deacons in mind. On this subject and for this audience it is a superb book on the subject. Even so, it has some information that may be of use to Episcopal and United Methodist people as well. Some of the theology presented is distinctly Roman. Other, such as the theology of service and the ministry of all the baptized has wider use.

The book is presented in a question and answer format. Typical questions about the diaconate are posed. The author then answers them in a logical and complete manner. The book is divided into eight general categories. A look at the category headings should give any reader an idea where to look to see if a particular question is examined. For example, one of the sections is on the liturgical ministry of the diaconate; readers would therefore know to look in that section to see about deacons presiding over baptism.

This is a great explanatory book and is easy to understand.

I review and promote a lot of business books on my community website for business professionals. I have not found one current book that discusses who the Millennials (Generation Y) are and how to best deal with these 20-somethings now entering the professional workforce. This is a very hot topic and something that has companies throughout the country concerned and baffled. Lisa's book is a personable quick-read packed with good info that any HR exec or Boomer/GenX manager will benefit from.

The authors falsely advertise this book when they say 300 INCREDIBLE THINGS TO LEARN ON THE INTERNET. Instead, they provide 300 classifications with several URLs included in each classification. An estimate based on an unscientific sampling of the 300 classifications, the book provides gateways to over 1000 incredible things.

I tested a few in areas of personal interest like Astronomy and Election, and asked my family members to do likewise (their choices). The sites that each one of us entered we agreed were informative and in some cases very entertaining. We felt some of the URLs were too slow. However, generally, we all agreed this book is a great gift for the newcomer (are there any left?) and the youngster to use for fun and reference...

Many ideas for protecting the world's oceans and the creatures therein...
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-10-15
I picked up a copy of this book at the 2007 Hawai'i Conservation Conference, where author David Helvarg was a keynote speaker. Helvarg is president of the Blue Frontier Campaign, an ocean advocacy group.

50 Ways to Save the Ocean is a book with a mission. That mission is to convince the reader that:

1. The oceans are in trouble and need your help.

2. There are things each person can do to assist in the conservation of our oceanic resources, even if you live in Kansas.

Most of the ideas are good, and I appreciate that Helvarg went beyond the "donate money to..." strategies that most Americans get in their weekly mail solicitations (although he encourages you to donate money to a variety of causes and organizations). He promotes activism: volunteering, writing, and lobbying. He notes the power of consumerism in affecting how the ocean's resources are exploited ("follow the money").

I found that I do about 3/4 of the actions he recommends. The question is, how does this information get into the hands of those who are not already involved in ocean protection issues?

Great Family Book!

This is an excellent book to help teach your family about caring for our oceans! The ideas and illustrations are fantastic to read with kids. Almost all of the suggestions can be accomplished as a family, too. Going to the beach, going on a whale-watching trip, visiting tide pools, eating healthy and sustainable seafood, etc., are all great family activities! This book makes it easy to get your whole family together and interested in saving our oceans. Also really helpful in giving extra meaning to family activities, as everything can be prefaced with an interesting suggestion from this book. It will certainly also improve your kids' self-esteem, knowing they are helping the environment. On top of that, it is a great read!

Fifty Ways To Save The Ocean by environmental activist David Helvarg (founder of Blue Frontier) is an informed introduction to the innovative ways anyone can use to help preserve Earth's oceans and aquatic-life. Expertly guiding readers through diverse ways to effectively contribute to bettering the condition the great oceans, Fifty Ways To Save The Ocean provides a keen understanding of which fish should not be eaten and which species are endangered or could impact adversely human health; how to save energy and how that might help out the seas; proper diving, surfing, and tide pool equipment; support for local marine education; and keeping an ocean-friendly aquarium. Fifty Ways To Save The Ocean is enthusiastically recommended reading, especially for environmentalists hoping to do their part in contributing to the best health of Mother Earth's oceanic environments.

As an educator I found this book to be a "must read" for students of all
ages. The reader gains a better understanding of what positive business
gains can be made when hiring within the disabled community. Further, the
author writes the book in a manner that allows you to know the "heroes"
within the company and gain a personal appreciation for what each one brings
to the work place, ultimately allowing a better understanding of the talents
a truly diverse workforce brings to enhancing the business and the lives of
each individual.

I hope this is only the beginning of Nancy Henderson Wurst's career in book

I am lucky enough to know David Morris personally, he is an inspiration in my life. Nancy Henderson Wurst captures in this book what David brings to the world, and we all need to know that compassion CAN live in the successful business world. I've also been lucky enough to meet some of those who David hired, persons who were "unhirable" by traditional standards. Wow, what a thing it is to see ABLE where others see "disabled". Just imagine what that does for that person. David brings compassion, harmony and ease into the bigtime corporate world and into the lives of everyone around him. Seeing David live his life, run his business and accept others is a major catalyst for the creation of a new business venture I am bringing to the world. Just last night I figured out how to also involve ABLED persons into the mix! It took 2 months of brainstorming but now I get to also try to make a little difference in the world, and I feel great ..thanks to David! No kidding, if you are a business person who has a yearning to also contribute to the world AS you do business then you should read this little book, I bet you WILL find some possibilities in there that will bring beauty to your life ..and to others. Have a good day.

This book I have found to be very valuable as a reference book particularly for people who take their horse sport seriously. I myself am into endurance, and have found absolutely everything I needed to know about what can possibly go wrong with an endurance horse, whether it be training techniques, nutrition, lameness, etc etc. The detail is immnense, and I have not found any veterinary condition not written about, and yet it is easy to understand, and very readable. There are photos and diagrams on almost every page, and the book is 565 pages long, plus has a huge appendix, and bibliography section at the end. I would strongly recommend this book to any competitive horse owner.

This is an exceptionally good reference book, a must-have for horse owners. The photographs are extremely well done. Many are by Dr. Loving herself, and illustrate exactly the points made in the text. I gave this book only 4 of 5 stars because the information on infectious diseases and vaccines is not up to par.

This should be THE veterinary manual for horse owners.

How could it be this comprehensive? How can it be this beautiful?
This book should become a milestone in the equine veterinary literature for the horse owner. It is visually gorgeous. The photographs clearly depict the subject matter, and the detail of discussion is stunning. Dr. Loving manages that rare art of describing highly technical subjects in an understandable way. Yet, she also seems to address the horse owner as a colleague, capable of understanding and impacting his or her horses' well-being. So often, when I have read these sorts of books, they either stop short of telling me the details that really interest me, or they tell everything, but in Latin.
I have never seen laminitis illustrated and explained so clearly as it is in this book. Dr. Loving addresses its varied causes, as well as prevention, therapy and how to recognize it. She shows photographs of laminitic hooves, horses rocked back off their forelegs, detailed diagrams and x-rays of coffin bone rotation.
Every section I have read in this book shows the same level of clarity, detail and respect for the reader that is found in the section on laminitis. At every step, Dr. Loving shows us photos of horses, diagrams, X-rays and ultrasound images to reinforce and illustrate the written discussion.
I have ridden, cared for and lived with horses at home for nearly fifty years. I rode dressage and evented when I was younger, happily relax and ride trails now. No matter your level of equine insanity, this wonderful book will support and guide you well. In my view, it is an absolutely indespensible addition to every horse owner's library. I bought one for myself, and now I am going to buy one for each of my two sisters.

Every horse owner should have a copy of this book. And with the price being less than a vet's farm call, it will pay for itself many times over. What I really appreciated about the book was that it isn't so technical that you need a medical degree to understand it, yet at the same time it is very thorough and the pictures, wow the pictures! For example not only are you told how to care for a deep wound, but how it should look at various staging of healing. How many times have you treated a wound and called the vet daily wondering if it's healing o.k. or getting worse?

The only thing that I was a tad disappointed in was most of the hoof shots showed shod horses and I am practicing natural hoof care and barefoot trimmning. But if you want a book on Barefoot Hoof Care, you should order a book specific to that topic. This book, it covers everything else you will ever wonder about with your horse and health related problems.

I don't call many of my 1000 books a "bible" of whatever subject, but this is my "bible" of horse health.

If only one comprehensive horse care 'bible' were to be chosen for a library, it should be the extensive and well-illustrated reference ALL HORSE SYSTEMS GO: THE HORSE OWNER'S FULL-COLOR VETERINARY CARE AND CONDITIONING RESOURCE FOR MODERN PERFORMANCE, SPORT AND PLEASURE HORSES. Written by a horse vet specialist, it packs in not only the anticipated horse care and health solutions chapters, but includes tips on fitness, conditioning, and much more. Small color photos throughout add interest but the meat is in the chapters of medical insights backed by a practicing vet's long-time experience: chapters which can save a horse's life whether consulted quickly in an emergency or used as preventative points. Over 600 pages of facts and a clear organizational structure makes it quick and easy for horse owners to gain immediate access and insights - or for library patrons to use it as an instant reference.

There is an old Chinese proverb: Some people make it happen; some people watch it happen; and some people wonder why it happened.

For many years, I have watched in disbelief the growth of urban sprawl, the mountains of garbage leaching chemicals into groundwater, and the dangerous accumulations of nuclear waste, to name just three insults we have inflicted upon the environment.

As I watched, I wondered: How could we let this happen? Why did it happen? Whose interests were served by these actions? This book provides the answers, in clear, simple language that is as useful to the scientist and student as it is to the lay reader. I felt helpless to respond appropriately to newspaper headlines issuing dire warnings about some new threat to the environment, partly out of ignorance, and partly out of a sense that surely the powers that be know what they are doing.

Thanks to "The American West at Risk", my ignorance has been dispelled, along with any complacency I might have harbored about the wisdom of continuing to carry on business as usual.

The book, written by scientists in an effort to reach a much wider public, takes a comprehensive look at manmade changes to the environment, including forestry management, food production, radioactive waste disposal, and oil and energy consumption. It does so with wisdom as well as wry humor. I now have a much better understanding of the deeper issues involved. This knowledge enables me to make positive changes with regard to protecting the environment while maintaining, and even enhancing, my own quality of life. By example, I hope to influence others to do the same. I heartily recommend it to any person, young or old, student, scientist, politician, and above all parent, who cares about the health and well being of ourselves and our planet.

Being a child and hearing over the radio, "Don't eat the snow today .... it is radioactive!" set the stage for wanting to know more. This was said over the air in downtown Salt Lake City during the years of open air atomic testing in Nevada!

What hasn't hasn't been told IS told in this book ... and much more! My hats are off to the authors. This has to be one of the most powerful messages to mankind. These authors have done excellent research. Find out the facts and DO read this book!

Chapters on the destruction of American forests and rangeland, pollution by mining, damages by tracks, trails, and roads, the creation of nuclear wasteland, the spread of our cement-and asphalt environment, the depletion of our water, the accumulation of 25 billion tons of waste every year, and the depletion of our birthright are frightening in detail and should make every citizen take action to change our ways. How to do this constructively are included in every chapter. The message is that Americans must start caring about the survival of small communities, their local towns, and their local resources.

I have also waited for this book to come out, starting in 2003. As a watershed professional, I find it to be an excellent, complete reference book for several issues I work with on a daily basis. I was particularily impressed with the pesticides chapter, I have had the most difficult time researching toixicity and regulations, and this book brought it all together into a useful format. This book should be at-hand for all environmental professionals in the arid west, as well as students & concerned residents looking to understand and address the complex issues facing our region.

The American West at Risk-Science, Myths, and Politics of Land Abuse and Recovery
I have been waiting years for this book to become available. The abuses of our arid western lands by the extraction and thrillcraft industries leave the concerned conservationist and land manager with much to do. However, it is no good shooting from the hip --a sound foundation in the science, law, and politics of these industries and the long term damage they cause is the only way to plan for healing. When called to action this book is the first grab from the shelf.

People on the autism/Asperger's (a/A) spectrum contend with a wide array of sensory issues, one of which is sensory integration. For many people on the spectrum, sorting out relevant stimuli from the extraneous can be difficult. Imagine being in a classroom and being distracted by the odors in the room, such as those from people and materials. Imagine having heightened sensory modes so that fire drills and alarms, as unpleasant as they are, are amplified. Dr. Temple Grandin equated fire drills to "dental drills in the ear," which is a very apt and accurate description.

Many people on the a/A spectrum often have trouble using multi-sensory modes, e.g. looking at someone while listening to them speak. The multitude of sensory input can be overwhelming, which in turn can lead to melt downs. This book does an extraordinary job of explaining these things and providing tips and resources for responding to sensory issues. The book also has some good information about how sensory distraction affects learning and strategies and techniques in working around this.

Former Beatle George Harrison unwittingly described the a/A experience with his stellar gem, "It's All Too Much." The lyric "it's all too much for me to see...it's all too much for me to take..." aptly describe sensory overload. It is not uncommon for people on the spectrum to close their eyes or go someplace private to come even after being bombarded with sensory input.

Be sure to read "The Out of Sync Child" and "The Out of Sync Child Has Fun" by Carol Stock Kranowitz. Those books are excellent companions to this one in exploring this further.

I purchased a copy of this book to give to my SID kids teacher. There are good descriptions of the types of behaviors that many SID kids experience. In addition there are many fun activities that a teacher can use with all types of children in their classes that benefit all of the kids. My son's teacher appreciated getting this guide.

Sensory integration is well worth understanding because it is estimated that 20% of all students in the U.S. are affected by sensory integration issues. There is little offered to teachers who might have to work with children whose ability to learn is often clouded by affects of stimuli. Carol Stock Kranowitz is the author of one of the best books on the topic called "The Out of Sync Child." Stacey Szklut, occupational therapist, discusses practical advice on how to assist learning for children with sensory integration problems.

The book outlines how problems in sensory integration can adversely effect learning and how to develop useful strategies to help struggling students focus and absorb. The book also includes simple advice on how to improve educational and social success for kids with this particular LD and how to network with other teachers who have used various techniques to help their students engage. The book is geared toward preschool through high school teachers of all subjects.
