The Kahnweilers have written a thoughtful, well organized and understandable guidebook for human resources professionals. Shaping Your HR Role, Succeeding in Today's Organizations, however, has a broader scope than careers in human resources. The book is a thoughtful discussion of the role of human resources in organizations and of good management practices. William Kahnweiler describes himself as a "pracademic", and he and Jennifer Kahnweiler have written a book that combines good practice with outstanding academic research. Anyone interested in better understanding the important role of human capital in an organization and how to wisely use it will benefit from this book.

This book provides very helpful advice about how to be successful within the HR field, both for those entering or transitioning to the HR field, as well as for practicing HR professionals.

The Drs. Kahnweiler do an excellent job of providing detailed descriptions of the skills, traits and knowledge needed to successful in HR, and also provide great advice about how to hone your skills and traits, and gain the knowledge to be successful in the field.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is thinking of entering the HR field as well as current HR professionals who would like to become more effective in their roles.

As a student of the HRD program at GSU, I found the book very helpful in providing a starting point for my career. The chapter discussing the various 'hats' that HR professionals wear provided insight into what a potential job in a corporation may look like for a new graduate and job seekers alike. I was impressed with the case studies and the wealth of experience that both doctors shared with their audience. I would recommend all students and practitioners read this book and keep it as a reference.

What a great resource. The stories recited in the book are poignant, humorous, and best of all, real. As a director of administrative support services I'm always looking for creative ways to get a point across. Stories work; these stories and the follow-up activities and presentation tips work.

My organization faces two challenges on a daily basis. First, what is the most efficient and effective way to collect, organize, manage and disseminate mountains of information? Second, how do we continue to streamline and simplify our administrative processes to provide more value-added service to our constituents?

The resources Lori and Mary provide through this text have enabled me to communicate more effectively with my staff during our planning and design sessions. The moral of these stories help us keep focused on the expectations and perceptions of our constituent base.

It's a book to be kept on your desk and referred to many times.

Replacing my tired, old yarns with powerful, new parables

I find that I hear myself telling the same stories over and over again to colleagues when trying to make a point. On the one hand, this is good for sending a consistent message. On the other hand, I get tired of hearing the same thing, and need to make my points in new ways.

As the global marketing research manager for Invista (the world's largest fibers company with consumer and b2b brands such as Lycra(r) and Stainmaster(r)), I need to convert data to meaning that helps our leadership to make decisions. That is what the stories in Stories Trainers Tell do for me. When our managers understand the opportunities that stories point out in the research, they are better able to act with confidence and communicate with clarity.

While I contributed to the book, I also use what it offers to make me a better communicator. I can communicate the meaning I see in data more effectively when I have a story to help me out.

I recommend that you check out the book for yourself to learn how you can upgrade your thinking and practice no matter what role you are in.

I am a Director of Training for a fortune 500 company. Quarterly, I look for new resources that my 40 designers and trainers can use when developing and delivering material to our employees and agents. This book was the gem I've been looking for. Story telling is the most powerful thing a trainer can give their students - because the stories last in the mind forever when the technical details disappear. This book details the how, the what, the when, the where, and the why. Recently I bought a copy for each one of my staff - and the incredible results are already coming in!!! To be successful as a project management consultant, it is important to be able to influence people to move in the direction in which they need to go (not always the direction in which they would like to go). The thing about using stories to influence is that people love stories and will listen even if they are resisting other management methods. This book has wonderful, rich content and is very easy to use. The commitment of the authors to help readers succeed is demonstrated by the sayitwithastory web site and newsletter. I am very pleased this terrific resource is available. [By the way, these stories work on family members also!]

Storytelling has been used to convey history and lessons for centuries. Before newspapers came on the scene, story tellers would travel from village to village telling stories to share the news of what was happening in other communities and the world at large...at least as large as it was back then. One could argue that storytelling has become almost a lost art as our communication mode has shifted more to content, facts, polices and procedures. In the corporate world, leaders and managers-and training professionals-have attempted to communicate without really reaching people "inside," where messages can resonate with a mental or emotional picture. It's that inner connection that has the potential of changing behavior and making a difference. To make that connection, communicators need to engage people's minds and hearts to help them "get" the message.

As a first year fourth grade teacher I have found this to be an EXCELLENT teaching resource. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn how to use phonics to improve reading and spelling - it has helped me both on a personal and a professional level. The information is in-depth and yet presented in a very user friendly format which has been logical and easy for me to build upon and REALLY USE!

Teaching Phonics And Word Study In The Intermediate Grades by WILLY BLEVINS

Author Willy Blevins has created a very sophisticated introduction to Phonics, but this books is also a WORD STUDY TEXT, emphasizing:

p. 51 Most Frequently Used Words in English Language.
p. The Dolch Word list (250 words)
as well as words classified according to suffix, prefix and word types, and Greek and Latin word Roots.

The Phonics instruction is in the first 50 pages and it is very complete. The entire book is designed with large pages and there are a number of exercises in the book that can be cut out or photocopied.

The book is directed at the elementary school student between the Third Grade and Eighth Grade. I got my copy to use in tutoring a single adult male from Mongolia.

I looked at nearly 20 books on this subject in the store, and bought several. This is the best of all the books I found. It is a complete course within itself.

This book is GREAT for anyone who has a difficult time teaching phonics. It is very easy to understand and gives the teacher in depth knowledge of phonemic elements.

This book is very smooth to read, and the insights are thoughtful. It is definitely a classic in Technical Analysis. However, the charts could use a little more simplicity. When you compare the charts in this book and the ones in the J. Murphy's "Technical Analysis Of The Financial Markets", considered the bible of Technical Analysis you spot the difference. The latter is a heavy volume but it can be read faster, because of the self-explanatory charts.

Overall, a must-have!

I read this because it was required reading for the CMT exam and I really wish I'd read it when I started trading a few years ago. It's easy to read and conveys a wealth of information that anyone who trades would find useful. The chapters on the TA controversy, charts, trends, MAs, and cycles are especially clear. Also valuable is that it's a serious book with none of the hype thrown in by authors of TA books who are really selling themselves. My only criticism is that the authors seem to believe they have to throw every technique and oscillator they've ever heard of into this book, regardless of whether they're of any value. But this allows the CMT people who prepare the exam to throw in questions on obscure topics as well.

This is by far the best book I have read on technical analysis. It is a complete guide to all the different aspects of T/A. The best part of the book and the reason it I give it 5 stars, is the fact that the author has tested all of the indicators himself (and his team), and if he hasn't tested them personally, he list someone who has. He provides you with the success/failure rate of different indicators, what % of the time the stock will rise after say a declining wedge, and how often contrarian trading works to your advantage.

If you have not read a book on T/A before, I would recommend reading something like Technical Analysis of the Financial Markets. I think you will get more out of the book if you already have a good knowledge base built up before hand.

Singe Best Book on Technical Analysis!

Technical Analysis by Kirkpatrick and Dahlquist has raised the bar and set the standard for TA books. It's far more advanced than Murphy's Technical Analysis of the Financial Markets, and a much easier read, as well as more scientific, than Pring's Technical Analysis Explained.

It consists of 629 pages loaded - I'm talking small type - with brilliant insight after brilliant insight. The book serves as a guide, a text book on TA, and a myth buster of some of the "pie in the sky" vodoo that distorts the image of TA. It tells you - with statistics and scientific research - what's effective, what was never effective and what used to be effective. After reading several investment books I learned both fundamental things and TA things.

The authors are Kirkpatrick and Dahlquist. Mr Kirkpatrick is an instructor in finance, Fort Lewis College School of Business Administration in Colorado and Ms Dahlquist is a senior lecturer in the Department of Finance at University of Texas. Ms Dahlquist has a Ph.D. The book has an impressive bibliography. It is 19 pages long and includes some papers not readily available to the general public. At the end of each chapter and Appendix A there are a list of review questions. I answered all of these questions and by the end of the book I was confident that I had come to grips with the subject matter.

There Is No Place Like Work...is an excellent tool for an organizational tune-up! My company's vision and mission are current and consistent, we are not looking to start over. But we have many entry level positions and a limited career ladder so we are constantly bringing new people into the organization. Using the tools that are provided in the book helped us to sharpen our presentations (tell our story)better, internally and to outside audiences. Additionally, we use the principals in our strategic leadership team as part of our planning process. This book is a winner!

Do you want to change careers? Do you want to start a business venture? Do you want to be crystal clear as to the direction you want to go with your business? Then might I suggest you read this book. While it is a metaphor to the wizard of oz, it is written beautifully so as to make you decide where you want to go with your business.
The information was just enough to get the wheels turning as to what is important and more importantly why?
I spent the day pondering the message in the book and created a business model that I am looking forward to implement tomorrow.

As a "headhunter" of 15 years, I have been a consultant to companies who are trying to attract top talent to their organizations. I have also worked with top-notch candidates who are searching to associate themselves with companies who are the best in their fields. What I have found is, that, which most excites quality, talented, qualified individuals to a new employer, is the company's leadership, their purpose, their culture and their core values. After reading "There Is No Place Like Work", I concluded that this easy-to-read, easy-to-understand, easy-to-follow and easy-to-implement guide is a "must read" for every business owner, CEO, executive, manager and human resources professional. The premise of the book is that anger is okay and natural, and you do not need to feel ashamed or scared when you are angry. You can talk about your anger, and try to physically calm your body, but you cannot be abusive and hurt yourself, others, or property.

If you are a parent hoping to help a child with anger issues, this is probably not the best book for you. It is basically a series of lesson plans designed for teachers/counselors to use when teaching students about anger and constructive ways to manage their anger.

OTOH, I do plan to adapt a few of the lessons for my family. There are a few useful stories and worksheets that could reinforce some of the messages I am trying to get through to my children, such as: using "cold water" words to diffuse someone else's anger; figuring out "what lit the fuse" for an outburst of anger; slowly escalating your words "using your muscles" to explain when someone is bothering you, rather than exploding all at once; and coming up with "safe ways" to express anger, among others.

I am an Elementary School Counselor. I got this book to help me put together small groups for some of my students. The book is wonderful. It is full of great and effective ideas. I bought many resources in the past, and this is by far the best one to help children understand and work through anger.

I have been working this past year on all areas of helping my child and myself learn to manage anger,stress,anxiety and frustration.I am lucky to be working with a teacher that is willing to explore and take advice from authors like Elaine Whitehouse. This book takes the chaos out of anger. Adults and children learn how to recognize and deal with and express normal feelings of anger. This,coupled with the anxiety and anger management techniques from Lori Lite's "Children's Awareness Curriculum" and "Indigo Dreams" CD have been just the right combination for me and my child. The more we as a community are exposed to these books and concepts the quicker we will have a peaceful, communicative society able to resolve conflict before the volcano errupts. This should be a required class for all children and adults.

I was a little disappointed in this book, I thought it was a list of things to do. It was more like vague suggestions with web sites to check out. Several of the web sites were no longer working. I didn't find a lot of new information that I have not already read about. This is more of a beginners guide for going green. I would have gotten a lot more out of it several years ago. So if you are just starting to find options for going green, this is a book for you.

Saving the Earth does not get much easier than this

Most people want to do whatever they can to make the world a better place and protect the Earth. For them, marching in demonstrations or engaging in direct action is not an option. What to do? In subjects ranging from Air to Water to Food to Global Warming, this book lists many web sites with more information to get the reader involved in protecting the environment.

Perhaps the reader just wants to find out what sort of recycling facilities are in their town. One of their first stops should be to www.earth911.org. To look for reusable or biodegradable diapers, visit www.organicbebe.com. The Wildlife Conservation Society (www.wcs.org) has a very distinguished record in conserving endangered species. For those who have compost heaps, Starbucks will give you their coffee grounds. Details are at www.starbucks.com/aboutus/compost, or talk to your local manager.

A handy wallet card on produce and pesticides called "The Shopper's Guide to Pesticides" (bring it with you when shopping) is available from www.foodnews.org. A good site on global warming is www.climatestar.org. The Busy Person's Guide to Greener Living can be found at www.greenmatters.com. Do you have stuff you no longer need that someone else may want? As is the list of environmental problems so overwhelming and the scale so global, so is the feeling that one person can't make a difference. And, even in the trying, the choices are so many and the information so contradictory, that it's hard to know where to start. Here, at last, is the logical successor to "50 Simple Things...," better, more evolved, and yet easier. A wealth of choices that can be tailored to match what you feel you CAN do now, what you MIGHT feel you can do later, and what you SHOULD be telling your friends-- in short, a compendium of answers on a scale that any of us can comprehend.

The Appendix, References and Resources sections are the best I have ever seen. For any person given the responsibility of safety management and who want to "save lives, prevent injuries and illnesses and protect their companies from financial harm", this is the place to begin. Dan and Steve successfully put together not just a well-written book loaded with many outstanding hints and ideas, they also included so many practical tools that the small to medium sized business can begin using immediately to improve workplace safety. It should be a "must read" for any business if they are really serious about this often overlooked issue. Great tips and ideas for motivating others, especially in the business world. Some of them include, "Know Where Motivation Comes From, Teach Self-Discipline, Stop Criticizing Upper Management, Keep Giving Feedback, Get Input from your People, Accelerate Change, Don't Confuse Stressing Out With Caring, Manage Your Own Superiors, and Manage Agreements, Not People." I've listened to these CD's more than once while driving. There are lots of great tips - and a couple opened my eyes to some areas where I had been stuck. Not every point was new to me. I have recommended it to others and shared some of the individual points with friends.

If you are a reader on leadership, Steve Chandler is not stranger to you. In "100 ways to motivate others:", he condenses several years worth of work into a handbook for the new generation of leader.
Do not be confused by the fact that the book is not large. Steve has crammed years worth of fundamental truths about motivation and management into a compact tome.
The hardest part of using these techniques is making the initial leap of faith that these steps actually work. And they do work. If you buy a book on motivation or leadership this year, it must be this book.

Chock Full of Easy to Implement Gems

Steve Chandler and Scott Richardson are no strangers to helping people become better leaders - these tips are the result of many seminars and books they have done in the past. The book is able to give many real life examples from those seminars of situations in which these suggestions really made a difference.

While other management books drone on and on for long chapters, often losing sight of the aim, this book is very straightforward. 100 separate tips. Each tip is short, concise, but immediately useful. Try reading just one tip each day. Put a post-it on your monitor, reminding you to think about it. Find ways to apply it. Like anything else in life, you'll find some tips that don't really apply to you - but others that are amazingly helpful. As you collect those helpful tips, you can really find your work environment becoming more and more smooth.

Many things in here are things you know - but you never practice because you're just too busy or frustrated. For example, the book says to focus on one thing at a time. We know that when you focus on something, you tend to do well. But in modern offices, you have your email beeping, your phone ringing, people stopping by, and more. You try to multitask. Usually this somehow gives you the sense that you're achieving more - but in reality nothing is done as well, and people that you interact with feel short changed. A key message here is to slow down, focus, organize your priority list and really take care of issues. You feel much more relaxed at the end of the day, the people you work with feel like you really paid attention to their issues, and often you get far more done.

One issue I had with the book is they gloss over some issues. In a few tips on time management, for example, they talk about how everybody in the world only has 24 hours in a day and it's silly to complain you don't have enough time for your workload. I'm not sure what THEIR workload is like, but at my job, there honestly is NOT enough time in a given day to do all the tasks I need to do. In essence I need to find more people to help me, and to take on some of those tasks so I actually have a good match between what needs to be done and how many hours I can stay awake. It would have been nice if they'd talked about that, vs making it seem like this couldn't be a problem.

That being said, the book really does have quite a number of gems in it, and is well worth reading multiple times.

This book is a good book to read, just don't expect it to be a one-stop reading type book. It gives you some good basics, but it's definitely not for someone who is trying to run a HR dept without any knowledge, only using this book. It helps give you a clearer idea of what track you are on and it's good for someone in the company that wants a general overview of their small business HR dept. I would recommend this book for a quick good read, but you will still need to supplement with other reading materials or research.

This book is an excellent resource for any small business owner who must also deal with human resources issues.

From developing a personnel policy, to interviewing, hiring and retaining employees, to dealing with work/life balance issues, this book covers it all. Especially helpful are the real-life case studies in which actual business owners describe how the book assisted them in handling certain situations.

Another helpful feature is the glossary in the back of the book. It affords the opportunity for small business owners to quickly research a term instead of reading through the entire book to gather more information on a particular topic.

So, whether you need advice on employee benefits, privacy or communication, this book should prove a usual weapon in your arsenal of information.

Let's face it - who wants to spend time worrying about human resource issues when you have a business to run? The hiring, the firing, the laws . . . it gives me a headache just typing it! In our litigious society an employer has to think not just twice, but 3 or 4 times before making a statement, sending out a memo, or creating a new policy. This book goes a long way to taking the fear out of the personnel arena and giving the business owner the necessary tools to hire the best prospect and retain that employee.

Holihan begins with explaining what human resource management actually is and walks you through creating personnel policies and handbooks. Creating job descriptions, organizational charts, recruiting, interviewing, hiring, and training are all covered in detail with additional sources for more research provided. Then Holihan gets to the truly sticky issues: communicating with employees; evaluating and motivating performance; discrimination and fair treatment; and the ever-nasty discipline and termination procedures. Nobody wants to fire someone, it causes as much emotional stress for the owner as it does for the employee. Holihan takes the pain out of the act by stating in plain language what the costs are for NOT firing an employee for poor performance.
