I have been in the retained search business for over 18 years and Lou's book is the only book and related seminar program to "hit the proverbial nail on the head" when it comes to interviewing and assessing top talent. Lou gives numerous case studies and examples to illustrate his ideas, unlike many books which leave you with such a superficial level of information that you sense they were nothing more than hot air. The best part of Lou's book is that you could skim the contents and walk into an interview and gain a very high confidence that the candidate can achieve the results you desire. Lou gives a step by step methodology for conducting the interview and assessing the results. Many of my clients, ranging from Fortune 100 companies to entrepreneurial DOT COM start-ups, swear by Lou's approach to interviewing and candidate assessment. I give a copy of Lou's book to all my clients. The other great part of Lou's book is that it is supported by a world-class web site for hiring and interviewing, POWERHiring.Com.

Sensational common sense approach to hiring

I've been a hiring manager for over 10 years. After reading Lou Adler's common sense approach to hiring in "Hire With Your Head, a rational way to make a gut decision" I ordered copies of his book for each of my hiring managers. This sensible approach to hiring has forever changed my approach to personnel staffing.

POWER Hiring Is Excellent and Here's Why
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 1999-10-25
I have used Lou Adler's POWER Hiring for over 3 years now. I have been a recruiting/ employment professional and consultant for 32 years and have seen a great number of methods, processes and procedures come and go. I have to say, this is by far the best of the best! Not only has this proven successful for me, but I have taught the methodology to quite a few of my clients. The response has been overwhelmingly positive. In my consulting capacity, I have the opportunity every day to observe the candidate/employer selection process. I also see the end results of the selection as I talk to employees who tell me about the latest hire that didn't work out very well. I frequently hear from the candidate who didn't match the new position and has a desire to search for a new position, often due to the misinformation presented in the interview process. I have observed that mistakes are made in a very high percentage of cases. It takes a lot to make an effective match. An employee might perform above average in one situation/culture and very average or below in others. For example, a Controller position in one firm may differ dramatically in terms of size and scope of responsibility, skills required, expected deliverables, etc. Just as not all Controllers are created equal, neither are the jobs. POWER Hiring is very effective in focusing on the factors of the specific position vs. the skills and talents of the candidate, with the end result being a drastic reduction in hiring errors. My suggestion; note the overwhelmingly positive responses by the readers on this site, buy the book and you will experience and enjoy the positive results you will achieve when employing these principles!

This approach does do it -- and does it well

According to articles in three major publications, the problems and recommendations in Lou Adler's book do address the correct issues. A recent Harvard Business Review article identified ten major interviewing mistakes -- known to most professionals -- but a constant struggle unless a technique like POWER Hiring is used. Training Magazine has a current article calling for something more than traditional "behavioral interviewing" to deal with increased preparation (and sometimes lies) on the part of interviewees. The POWER Hiring approach probes much deeper than traditional behavioral interviewing -- and solves this problem by switching from "having" to "doing." And Fortune Magazine recently recognized Adler's book as the "best" on addressing the ever more complicated issue of navigating the internet.

I've trained hundreds of human resources and management professionals on interviewing techniques. I've never seen a technique as strong as Adler's POWER Hiring. I've counseled hundreds of job seekers in a volunteer job seekers program -- they've reacted very positively when I've suggested that being prepared to answer Lou Adler's questions would really set them apart.

POWER Hiring, as suggested by Adler, is theoretically solid, based on sound management principles that hiring managers often forget -- and it works!

The best business improvement book ever written

Don't let the date this book was published influence your decision to buy - it is timeless. I am on my second copy of this book and would characterize it as the best book on business process management that has ever been published. This is "The Book". Everyone I know in the Business Process Management field has this book. I recommend it to every client and every business improvement team member that I work with.

The information contained in this "gem" can help anyone involved in process improvement. Consultants, executives, managers, process team leaders, process team members - it doesn't matter whether you are working in manufacturing, finance, logistics, sales or human resources. It also doesn't matter whether you are new to BPM or have been in the field for 20 years. This book will change the way you think about organizational structure and approaching business process.

Trying to characterize what parts of the book were best, would be like trying to dissect what parts of the blue sky you like best. It is all great stuff - each chapter is better than the next, and will help you understand what needs to be done to make business improvement initiatives work. It is well written, easy to understand the concepts, with hundreds of useful illustrations and models to learn from.

I would give this book 6 stars if I could ...

This book will survive the trends, since most of the trends are based on the principles in this book. The names will change (Quality Circles, Just In Time, TQM, Re-engineering, Six Sigma, ...), but these principles and how well they are implemented will determine a companies' efficiency and quality.

As a business process and systems analyst, I have used the techniques in this book extensively to document existing and proposed processes and systems.

The diagramming techniques ensure thorough identification of all relevant interfaces and will assist in identifying those frustrating and toxic business processes that defy verbal description, but once diagrammed, seem to become clearly understood. I cannot count how many "Ah-ha" moments I have seen when confused managers, too deep in the trees to be able to see the whole forest, finally see the problems with their business laid out in clear pictures drawn with the techniques taught in this book.

Best companion for process improvement

This is by far the first book that dealt with process improvement and change from all angles. This book provides examples that will help the novice in preparing and implementing change. Packed with examples and worksheets to guide the reader thru the whole process. However, since it was written in 1995, this book does not cover prevailing technologies but is still useful in understanding the foundations for change. If you are looking to implement business process change/improvement, read this book in conjunction with a more recent book by Paul Harmon "Business Process Change" who happens to be a student of Mr. Rummler. Paul Harmon's book cover such topics as CMM and Six Sigma when implementing process change.

...purchase this book. I was looking for web sites to enjoy with my nieces and younger cousins and decided to purchase a book which could "direct me" in the right places. This book is a wonderful addition to have if you have younger children and younger visitors and need a way to "keep them occupied"! Buy this book. It is very well put together! It is also worth every cent. The only thing it doesnt have that I would give it 5 stars is a CD ROM directory for the electronic version...otherwise go for it if you dont mind typing in the sites yourself!

The Internet Yellow Pages is a "must have" book for students, adults, schools, teachers, and public libraries. Parents, teachers, and libraries should have access to this fabulous resource. After all, most homes and offices have at least one telephone directory. Let your fingers do the walking with this fabulous Internet directory which includes over 800 pages of carefully alphabetized, categorized, and graphically appealing subjects that can be used for research and information gathering. Does your child or someone you know need to write a report? Possibly a state, gold rush, science, animal, or other type of school report? Look no further. Just get out the Internet Yellow Pages, type in the URL and you will be instantly connected to quality web sites without wasting valuable time using various search engines. Each site is full of great information that has been carefully reviewed as "kid safe" by the author, Jean Armour Polly and her staff.

In addition to the excellent educational locations there are also many sites that are fun to visit, such as, jokes and riddles, toys, sports, games and fun, rainbows, boating and sailing, to name a few.

The final section of the book is dedicated to parenting and families. This section includes subjects such as entertainment, movie, video reviews, education, baby-sitting, health and safety. All the information is carefully referenced in the final index and the bonus CD-ROM includes tutorials, for safe and fun surfing on the net. This is a wonderful book and a very good investment. It is a reference guide each home, school, or library should have at their fingertips.

Our Girl Scout/Brownie International Day was a smashing success thanks to this book. Our troops were able to find information, recipes, songs and dances quickly and easily. We kept it at the Headquarters for a few months and everyone turned to it to find out about every country from Haida Nation to Iceland. The girls loved the website activities and the leaders loved the ease with which they could retrieve information. I also used her editorial blurbs to entertain the crowds between performances.

The 2002 Net-mom's Internet Kids & Family Yellow Pages directory offers kids and their entire families a number of refreshing, entertaining, and informative Websites. After a brief introduction readers are treated to Net-mom's top hotlists, top Websites, and safety tips for surfing the Internet. Then the real fun begins!

This 587-page yellow page directory covers hundreds of topics of interest to kids and their families. Websites offer information about animals, art, buried treasures, coin collecting and money, computers, food, foreign countries, American history, insects, interesting facts, the Internet, music, scouting, ships and shipwrecks, space missions, sports history, toys, transportation, weather, world leaders, and much much more. I took the time to visit some of the Websites listed in the book. Here are several that caught my interest:

Students will be in for a real gooey education at Silly Putty University. Here they will learn about the history, composition, and many uses of this still-popular toy - the toy with only one moving part. Students will also learn about the many varieties of Silly Putty currently available - the original pink, the 50th year anniversary metallic gold, glow-in-the-dark colors, temperature sensitive color changing colors, and an assortment of bright colors. When ready, students can elect to take the final exam in order to receive their Silly Putty degree!

After viewing the Silly Putty Website I moved on to Coin World , to look up some information about my favorite coin - the 1943 steel pennies. During the second World War copper was needed for the war effort so zinc-covered steel pennies were struck. However, some rare 1943 copper pennies and even rarer 1944 steel pennies were made. At least one 1943 silver-bronze penny was made! I performed some additional online research and ended up placing bids at eBay for some steel pennies - and I won!

As with any child-age educational material, parents should become seriously and creatively involved with the upbringing of their children. They should take the lead to protect their children at all times while they surf online. To her credit, the author advises parents to review certain Websites that contain sensitive material. Topics such as religion, politics, child development, environmentalism, and the creation-evolution debate sometimes touch upon controversial issues and require responsible parental involvement.

The author provides brief and concise summary descriptions of each site mentioned in the book and creatively relates topics of interest to encourage readers to dig deeper in their online researching. As I've found out for myself, visiting Websites like the ones listed in this book can be a good educational experience, as well as a bunch of fun for the whole family. Parents can sit down with theirs kids and have many hours of fun and adventure. This book is ideal for babysitting, daycare, home-school, and public school use!

I chose this amazing book for our couples book club--it's one of the few books we've read that was equally loved by both the men and the women. It tells the adventures of one man and his family of five daughters in the rough, watery terrain of Eastern Canada.

Unlike typical nature writing that tells stories of lone men wandering the wilderness (zzzzz), this story mingles the hilarious antics of a rich family life with good friends and bizarre acquaintances. The amazing nature tales are a bonus!

We are serious readers (Steinbeck, Dickens, Twain), and we all agreed that this is one of our favorites.

Happy reading!

As the title of the book says, it's a series of chronicles about events that occurred on the Kipawa or around, as seen by Scott Sorensen, the owner of country cottages at the bottom of the Kipawa.

The book is interesting for paddlers, but most chronicles are not related to whitewater.

Scott Sorensen's narrative beautifully dovetails his family'snorthwoods triumphs & tribulations of the past quarter centurywith the present showdown involving Hydro-Quebec - North America'slargest power-generating company, and it's attempts to dam-up theKipawa River in Northwest Quebec. This book wonderfully illustratesthe power of Mother Nature and Man's (HQ's) relentless attempts toharness it in the name of "progress" and profit.

Bravoto Scott for his efforts to bring this gross act to the forefront ofpublic attention! As this chapter of the story remains unresolved, Ipray Hydro-Quebec's progress be halted in order to protect thisnatural wonder from destruction and ensure the continuity of thosecountless ecosystems which depend on it.

Upon reading about"Ham the Cat," one must wonder why "Ham" shouldn'tjust outright attack'em!!

My family has been traveling to the Kipawa region for 4 decades and spanning 4 generations. I read this book nearly non-stop. Scott Sorenson has really put a face to the name 'Kipawa'. The author, in telling how his life has been affected by the lands surrounding the Kipawa River, instills in the reader a better understanding of the natural forces that constitute the heartbeat of this region. The book covers many topics from the history of the region to wilderness survival. I'd recommend it to anyone who has contemplated life in the north woods, or to those like me who are simply grateful for each and every visit to the land and waters that are Kipawa.

For those who love the wilderness this book is a mixture of history, excitement and reality. This grouping of personal and historic stories of life in the wilderness of Canada is a pleasure to read. With it's regular reality checks that show you the modern day struggle that occurs in every wilderness area as man tries to balance his need for more with his love of unspoiled beauty this book shows us what challenges we must overcome to preserve what is left of the wilderness. Read it and rise to that challenge. Over the past thirty years I have spent many weeks in the Kipawa area. It is a joy to see and experience. Scott's stories give you a picture what it is to live in and experience these wild places. Life is to short to see them all but our challenge as Scott demonstrates in this book is to preserve them for our children and the many generations that follow. Read this book and you will be moved by the experience.

Paul Tripp gets right to the heart of the matter. With great skill he is able to reveal to the reader the ugly truth about the condition of their heart. Fortunately, he doesn't leave you there but shows how the power of the Gospel properly applied is the only real solution.

This is one the most helpful books I have ever read and I highly recommend it.

This book is scripturally based and is very helpful to everyone. The subtitle "Getting to the Heart of Your Comminication Struggles" should be "Getting the Heart of Your Struggles". So much of our sin comes from our words and attitudes and this book just drives that home consistently. I can't think of anyone who could not benefit from this book, believer or non-believer. I got on line actually to order four more books for friends of mine.

Excellent Guide to Communication within Relationships

This is the best book I've ever read on how Christians should behave in terms of communicating with one other. Tripp points out the (not always so) obvious that Scripture clearly teaches that anger is a sin, and if we use anger in our communication, it means we are not trusting God who is sovereign over our lives and circumstances. He asks the pointed question: Are you willing to sin in order to get what you want, or, if you don't get what you want, do you then sin (out of anger, frustration, disappointment, etc.)? He also provides some excellence guidance on anger management. It is both biblical in its teaching and practical in its application.

I purchased this book not so much that I thought I needed it, but due to the impact of reading Pauls book, "Lost in the Middle". I found that I needed this book way more than I thought ( maybe inside I did know I needed this, but did not want to admit it ).

In this book, Paul David Tripp does not write about the mere mechanics of Christ-like communications, but about the very core of our communication struggles. That is, our self-centeredness instead of God-centeredness.

The Holy Spirit used this book to convicted me more than any other Christian writing I have ever previously read. If you are truly interested in becoming more Christ-like, read this book. You will rejoice that you did.

A must-read for every believer who talks to other people

Review Date: 2007-09-06
War Of Words is about just what you'd think: a battle, one we should each be fighting: "Our communication struggle is...primarily a struggle...of the heart. Our war of words is not with other people; it is a battle within" (p. 30).

With characteristic frankness, a solid grasp of theology, and an engaging and thoroughly practical tone, Tripp explains, "Words belong to God, but He has lent them to us so that we might know Him and be used by Him...Talk was created by God for His purpose. Our words belong to Him" (15). He then shows us that what went wrong is that we exchanged worship of God for worship of ourselves. He defines the problem this way: "Word problems are always related to heart problems...An idolatrous heart will produce idol words, words that serve the idol that grips us...We will not solve our problem with [ungodly] words until we humbly address the adultery and idolatry of our hearts. (55, 59)

As any good Biblical counselor would, he gives hope, and that hope isn't found in a system, a program, or technique. "Our world of talk does not have to be a world of trouble for this one reliable reason: the Word has come" (49). Tripp does what he does best when He points us to our Redeemer: "The promise of the Gospel...aims at more than a temporary lull in the storm of words. The Gospel holds out the promise of nothing less than a new heart, one that is no longer enslaved to the passions and desires of the sinful nature" (60).

After reminding us of all the above, he offers practical help. Of course, the first step in overcoming idolatry is to look at God Himself, but beyond that, we grow in the context of our relationships, especially in the ministry of the Body. Scripture teaches, he says, the concept of "everyone ministering everyday!" Essentially, allowing God to redeem our communication for His purposes revolutionizes how we look at our family in Christ, which revolutionizes our involvement with them, which revolutionizes our communication with them. And that's what Christ was talking about when He said the world would know us by our love for one another. God is a God of redemption; we as His ambassadors must be people of redemption. As we "speak redemptively...no longer will our words leave a trail of discouragement, destruction, and division. Rather, they will be words of love, truth, grace, hope, faith, forgiveness, and peace, producing a harvest of righteousness" (181-182).

It took me an inordinate amount of time to read this book, not because the book is that long or that hard to read, but rather because I didn't like reading it. For all that, it is one of the best books I have read in a long time. Those things are both true for the same reasons. With conviction that tempts me to turn away, God through His Word and the redemptive words of the author also brings comfort that draws me to Him. There is a war of words going on in my own heart, but now I am better equipped to fight with the Spirit, rather than against Him (Gal. 5:16-17), by His grace and for His glory.

It contains some unusual and even provocative information concerning whether it is preferable to read in hardcopy or online; it also has interviews with people who create content at the freebie sites and this gave me a fresh perspective on the availability of free resources. The best thing is that isn't chock full of screenshots, it's full of information.

This is an excellent book. My husband and I read many passages for my son. He likes them very much. They enrich his mind tremendously. My son's school somehow does not provide this much content. We would miss a lot fine literature, history, and geography without this book. Thanks to the authors. I do see the math part is too easy for second graders nowadays. For practice, we use Beestar math and ELA (a wonderful web site www.beestar.org). Its free weekly exercises are about right and very helpful. Overall, this is an outstanding book loaded with fine content. I highly recommend it.

When I bought this book from Amazon, I knew it was a steal! My daughter has already been helped so much by its stories, activities, and short biographies of famous people. I plan to eventually buy all of the books in the Core Curriculum series. They're just like vitamins and vegetables, they're good for kids!

Beth Moore's updated Bible study, "A Woman's Heart: God's Dwelling Place," is a mixture of the material she published 10 years ago and the lessons she's learned since. The exercises are slightly changed - not all for the better. Typos and poor editing make me long for the first member book.

However, as a complete package, the updated video teaching is typical Beth - energetic, thought-provoking, and full of wisdom and humor. You absolutely cannot complete this study and NOT be changed!

Even if you did not do the first study (which I did not), this is a great study. I have done many other ones and Beth Moore keeps getting better and better. She will make you laugh, cry, think, praise and most importantly encourage you to grow closer to God. I am only a few weeks in and can't wait for the new material every week.

This is a timeless treasure of mathematical understandings generated by Marilyn Burns and her associates. These activities, coupled with hands-on training for teachers, can make a tremendous difference in the mathematical understanding of elementary and early middle school teachers. Most important in this edition are the addition of Burns' revised thinking on Teaching Arithmetic (part 3), and her compilation of discussions for 40 activities (part 4). These two additions have rounded this meaningful math resource into a powerful tool for on-going staff development.

I love this book! It is a great resource with ideas for getting kids interested in math and what questions teachers should ask themselves as they teach. It also points out common mistakes students make and their thought processes for getting there. It is divided into sections by mathematical topics and also has dozens of lesson plan ideas, both for full lessons and those quick time-fillers. This is the most reader-friendly textbook I've ever had to read for a class--it's so easy to read!

I haven't finished reading this entire valuable resource, but it has a great conceptual framework followed by creative ideas. I teach 7th Grade Mathematics overseas where my students have not had a great basis in analytical thinking and I look forward to using these ideas with my classes this year.

I like the schematic structure of American Legal Systems: A Resource and Reference guide. Once I delved into it, I really appreciated the clear and concise organization of the content as well as the presentation in tables and outlines.

As a novice reader in common law, I found the dual outline approach - from general to particular - very interesting: the concepts are first introduced, anchored and defined; thereafter, further developed into an enabling level of details.

Reference books generally do not explain the hierarchy of concepts. If reading the dictionary is not the most practical way to learn English, reading this book definitely makes exploring the American legal systems much less arduous. It is like the wheels under the car that will bring you there!

Most Valuable Navigator of American Law for Foreign Lawyers

BOOK COMMENTS

American Legal System: Most Valuable Navigator of American Law for Foreign Lawyers Liu Junhai "American Legal System: A Resource and Reference Guide", written by Prof. Toni M. Fine, is one of the most practical and concise guidebook for American and foreign lawyers, especially those civil law trained lawyers, who want to gain a clear picture of American legal system within short time. Prof. Fine finished this book not only on the basis of many years of teaching American legal system at prestigious NYU School of Law, but also on the basis of her over ten years of productive academic research in this field. As a Chinese lawyer, I personally have benefited greatly from reading this book. Therefore, I'd like to encourage other foreign lawyers to share the informative knowledge presented in this book.

It is true that you can find innumerable books on American legal system either in bookstores or libraries. However, most of the legal works focus on specific or even very narrow areas of law, so as to satisfy academic exploration requirements. And most commonly used approach for foreign lawyers to learn American legal system is to start from very detailed yet specific areas of law. Therefore, it is natural for readers of this sort of books take it for granted that, they have known American legal system. In fact, what they have learned is only a part of American legal system, not the American legal system as a whole. Almost every body knows exactly the story of Indian blind men, who touched deferent parts of the same elephant, and mistook elephant either as a wall, or as a big fan, etc. To avoid the stupid mistakes made by these poor blind men, Prof. Fine just worked out a very clear picture of American legal system in a condensed form. After reading this book, I found the orientation of American law without difficulties, and got very familiar with basic concepts of American jurisprudence, case law, statutes and legislative history, administrative and other executive law, civil litigation, appellate court review, basic legal citation form, preparation of interoffice memorandums, memorandums of law, and preparation of appellate briefs. In a sense, I'd like to call this book a navigator in the ocean of American law. Before I read this book, I had found no such sort of navigator.

In order to enable readers operate and use the navigator easily and pleasantly, Prof. Fine tried her best in developing this book in a coherent, yet active and enabling way. The designation of the hierarchy of the whole structure of this book, including the headlines and sub-headlines, is very clear, concise and logical. The author also tends to guide the readers have the sight seeing from farther too nearer. For instance, the author introduced the basic concepts of stare decisis, court hierarchy, jurisdiction, dual court system, primary versus secondary authority at the very beginning of this book, and developed them further in details when readers proceed on exploring. Reading this book, is just like exploring a well-designed building group. To keep readers excited instead of tired while reading, the author used over sixty live and narrative charts, and avoided boring legal language. Therefore, almost each and every foreign lawyer or business people with basic English language skills could understand this book very well.

When I introduced this book to my colleagues in China, almost all of them think it necessary to translate this book into Chinese, and publish it in Chinese, so as to make it available to hundreds of thousands Chinese law students, lawyers, legal scholars, business people and general public, who have strong interest in American law. I could not imagine that Chinese students do not have this book as an indispensable refrence book if they want to study American law in the future. Although this book can not replace other American law books in specific areas of law, other books could be understood better and deeper with the assistance of this book as a navigator. I believe it is also true with the counterparts in other countries, especially the civil law countries. Of course, American law school students and business school students having interest in studding American law are also the suitable beneficiaries of this book. It is no wonder why this book has been printed for three times sine it was published in 1997. I sincerely hope and believe this book will be published in more foreign languages, and enable more foreign lawyers use this navigator in skillful and experienced way when they explore American law for either academic purpose or business purpose.

If you are coming from a civil law country and want to learn more about the common law system, this book is just perfect for you. I highly recommend it to foreign trained lawyers attending an LL.M. program at an American law school. If you are planning to start your studies this fall, buy and read it this summer and enjoy the headstart and lean back in your first classes.

I like Professor Fine's book not only because it is so eloquently written (reader-friendly - how exceptional in the field of law!), but also for its clarity and conciseness. Especially the numerous charts are extremely useful and show you on one page what other books try to explain to you on 20 pages.

In short, Professor Fine's book will be your loyal companion through your LL.M. year.

An invaluable tool without frills for any foreign lawyer

This book is by far the most concise yet informative and enlightening book on U.S. law I have seen so far.

While most other book require the reader to work through numerous cases, huge loads of legislative materials, or just endless prose, Professor Fine succinctly outlines the most relevant basic principles, legal institutions, and practical aspects of U.S. law. Whenever possible (which is almost always the case), she summarizes the information in charts, making it easy to understand and memorize without going through the ordeal of filtering little pertinent knowledge out of a vast continuous text. The books also takes account of the needs of everyday legal practice by focusing in large parts on procedural law.

I wish I knew about this book earlier. It would have saved me countless hours and would have made access to the U.S. legal system and to its practical application considerably easier.

For the purposes of foreign students, particularly those trained in a civil law jurisdiction and interested in gaining a first understanding or in filling their knowledge gaps of U.S. law, Professor Fine's book is truly unmatched by all other books I know.
