When you get Alan Bean, astronaut and amazing artist, with Andrew Chaikin, a tremendous writer, you have the recipe for one magnificent book. The artwork, of course, is the main ingredient and it never disappoints. Alan Bean has a unique talent and tells the tale of going to the Moon in his drawings. Even without the accompanying words, it is easy to lose oneself in the moment. I think there is a certain 'realness' that the photos dont have and I do not know how to adequately explain why.
At any rate, this is a wonderful book and any space fan should not hesitate to pick it up.

There are sometimes laments that we will never get a proper description of what it's really like to be in space until we send a poet. However, though NASA may not have sent a poet, it did send a painter. Al Bean had dabbled in the arts before and during his tenure as an astronaut, but when he retired he focused on becoming a painter and particularly on creating paintings that showed what it was really like to walk around on the surface of the Moon. This book contains many of those paintings.

The text, meanwhile, is yet another memoir by an Apollo astronaut, and if anything is rather on the terse side, with only brief bits leading up to the more extensive Apollo portion, and only a brief conclusion. It's interesting but doesn't stand out amongst the many other astronaut memoirs, except for the accompanying illustrations. Each chapter concludes with a dozen or so pages reproducing Bean's paintings, with Bean explaining the scene he was depicting and what he wanted to show. This makes this book a unique record of one man's trip to the Moon, and, I suppose, won't be matched until we actually do send a poet.

First, let me say that Alan Bean is one of the most articulate of the Apollo Astronauts who walked on the Moon. In addition to listening to the painter himself about his collective series of truly unique "Paintings from the Moon", you owe it to yourself to purchase a copy of the DVD, "For All Mankind". That DVD is reviewed elsewhere on this site, but it and this particular book full of Mr. Bean's paintings will likely become the most treasured additions to your collection of manned spaceflight memorabilia.

I also found the dramatic characterization of Alan Bean, and the exploits his Apollo 12 crewmates, depicted in Tom Hank's 1998 HBO miniseries "From the Earth To The Moon" to be one of the most entertaining espisodes of that facinating and truly outstanding TV production first telecast in 1998. This book was published in the same year and the two works complement each other very well, upstaging most of the other spaceflight documentaries which are somewhat lacking in humanistic content.

We are very fortunate to have had at least one Astronaut with additional interests other than just pure science and aerospace engineering, to share his extraordinary experiences while serving as a key member of the Apollo program.

The one and only thing missing from my copy of this book is Al Bean's personal autograph!

If you have a strong interest in Space travel, and always wanted to talk to the Astronauts that went to the moon to ask them how it felt or what they were thinking as they walked on a planet other then earth, this is the book that will bring you to a time that has never been repeated. A time when man walked on the moon.

Mr. Bean's use of his fantastic artwork to describe a part of his life when he was a member of the elite few, chosen by NASA, to become the first to walk on the moon, is the closest you will get to actually being there.

It is a book of Mr. Beans paintings but also a trip thru the minds of some of our first Astronauts. If how space travel began interests you at all, I strongly recommend obtaining this book. It's a must have to any collector of Space Memorabilia.

Did you know that negotiation can be taught? Most architects do not understand that the rest of the world NEGOTIATES. This book is absolutely ESSENTIAL to the business end of architecture, as well as to life. How do you handle a client who wants full ownership of documents? Do you know what liability that can open you and your firm up to?! Do your key employees know how to negotiate? What about negotiating design? Are all aspects of the design so important that you're willing to walk away from the job, the client and future work; or do you know how to negotiate a win-win situation? This book is for ANYONE in the firm who is in direct contact with the client or other representatives of the client. GET AND READ THIS BOOK! (It will even help with non-professional relationships.)

I am not an architect, but I loved this book. It clearly laid out steps real people can take to negotiate tough problems -- whether construction-related or not. The chapter on communication skills and the one on dispute resolution alone were worth the price of the book. In fact, I would say, as a senior manager of a growing business, that anyone who seeks to accomplish anything important in any business would benefit from the information this book contains. It should be required reading for all.

Contract negotiations are often tedious and frustrating. This book was refreshingly useful because it laid out strategies for achieving desired negotitated results. The book's advice and approach can be applied with profit to any contract negotiations, but it's examples are based on negotiating the complicated agreements between Owners and Architects. I've used it with success to explain the Architect's needs and concerns to Owners and, just as frequently, I've used it when representing Owners to explain why a certain compromise and position in negotiations with Architects makes sense. It is a book with balanced advice on how to negotiate in general and how to do so in particular in the Owner/Architect context. It's many specific examples and suggested solutions to typical negotiation issues have saved me hours of time attempting to articulate to opposing counsel or my clients what the author has already compiled in this book.

I've found its contents so useful that I've taught portions of seminars to Architects, Contractors and Owners using lessons and insights taken from the book. The attendees always have commented favorably on the concrete, practical advice they have learned from those portions of the seminar.

This is a valuable book. If you're involved in any negotiations, especially construction, it is worth purchasing.

I teach architecture students a course on professional practice and have made Architect's Essentials of Contract Negotiation required reading. Of all the sources I've read on this topic, Ava Abramowitz offers the most accessible and well-reasoned explanations of what every design professional must understand about negotiation (and communication).

Abramowitz's many years of experience as a counselor, teacher and mentor to architects has clearly given her insight into how architects think, and she uses this insight to great effect. My students enjoy reading this text (especially Chapters 3&4) because it connects to the way they see the world (and helps focus that vision) in language that rings true. Don't be fooled by the word "Contracts" in the title; this is a great book about architects and negotiation in general and one that I believe all architects should own.

This set is perfect with a travel-sized booklet accompanying a good quality sketchbook. My son is a serious artist and just loves this! It is a great size for a child, also. The text is a nice one, especially considering its size. This is not for "young" children not serious about art as it isn't "kiddie" oriented. The set is for adults or teens, or seriously artistic children. My son thought this was his best holiday gift this year and he is 10.

He is looking forward to using it, soon after he is done with all the video games from Christams! He is only 8, but has a great eye for detail, and I think this is definitely a good starter for his mature senses.

This one is excellent, the paper is thick, is bound very well, the charcoal and pencils are made of high quality and last a long time. Don't waste your money on other cheaper/cheezy products, this is a keeper.

This book has been very helpful for myyoung children's clay classes. We successfully completed several projects from this book and everyone was happy: teacher, kids, parents. It was fun seeing the older kids come over from their wheels and be jealous of the little kids' projects. The book has also been a source of joy to me since the animal projects we did in class were so much fun, I continued the projects long after class was over.

The writing is clear, sometimes sparse, but the pictures are good. I also appreciated the associated learning that can accompany the projects (or vice versa).

The past three years I have had the privilege of chairing an exhibition of K-12 student work in clay for the NC Pottery Center located in Seagrove, NC. This year my grant was generous enough for me to present each teacher who participated in our exhibiton a copy of Ellen Kong's book, The Great Clay Adventure. Each receipient was thrilled and eager to begin new clay projects with students.

We at the Pottery Center feel confident that distributing this incredible and inspiring book across our clay rich state of 100 counties will definitely stimulate our next generation of potters!!! Thank you, Ellen Kong!!

The concise, clearly worded directions are easy to follow. No wasted words; no partial explanations. In the photographs accompanying each project, I like the mix of student and mature work. Also commendable are the explanations of how basic handbuilding techniques can be combined to produce lively ceramic art. All in all, The Great Clay Adventure stimulates the imagination. I highly recommend this book for clay artists, art teachers and school libraries.

Although the monograph seems like an obsolete form, there are many reasons, art historical, political, and human, to rethink the genre today.
The author furnishes extraordinary primary research and delivers an important message that admiring artworks must incorporate a thorough knowledge of the life of the artist. This knowledge is mediated by the humble efforts of hundreds of years of chroniclers--art historians, critics, connoisseurs. Gabriele Guercio pays tribute to art and the science of art.

A MAJOR COLLECTION
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2001-12-05
LOSS WITHIN LOSS is a major collection of biographical short stories: tributes to friends, lovers and colleagues who have died from AIDS.

Several of the contributing writers are quite famous: the lecturer/poet/teacher Maya Angelou, the playwright/screenwriter Craig Lucas ("Prelude To A Kiss," "Longtime Companion"), the novelist Allan Gurganus ("Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All"), the writer Andrew Solomon ("The Noonday Demon") et. al. Several of the dedicatees lived the lives of celebrities: the poet James Merrill, the film makers Derek Jarman and Howard Brookner, the writer Paul Monette. But it is not their fame which is celebrated in this book: it is their love and friendship and, most importantly, their art which is now lost to the world forever because of a disease, the deadly power of which, was and still is, underestimated. The styles of the stories are as diverse as the styles of the individual writers: some read like the poetry they are; some like straight-forward fiction and some like excruciatingly honest, almost farcical diary entries.

These are not simply sad stories; they are beautifully written, funny, charming, intelligent, very candid rememberances of lives past passed. Besides the stories, there are some photographs of the artists and their works, biographies of the writers and their subjects, a wonderful photograph by John Dugdale on the cover and an introduction by Edmund White
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Far more than a collection of elegies

LOSS WITHIN LOSS is a most appropriately titled reminiscence of the black hole AIDS blasted in our art community. Edmund White, always the sensitive observor and writer of tender memoirs, takes on the role of Editor here and has selected some very fine writers to personalize the contributions and deaths of their friends. He has also written minibiobraphies of not only the artists who have been lost but also of each of the biographers. Selecting artist/bigraphers to highlight in a review of a book of this total force seems almost incongruous, yet Chris DeBlasio is so beautifully defined by William Berger, and the polarities of the lives and deaths of Paul Monette and James Merrill who died within four days of each other are so adroitly observed by their mutual firend J.D. McClatchy, and Felice Picano's warm eulogy for Robert Ferro and all that surrounded the Violet Quill Club are all so fine that they shine especialy brightly.

The unexpected joyful aspect of spending time with this extraordinary book is discovering how much we didn't know about so many artists in every field - from poetry, to novels, to puppets, to architecture, to dance. Yes, the names ring distant bells, but when the artists are put into context with the time in which they were creating AND that they were creating knowing that their corporal time was limited, the effect is staggering. I do not find this book at all morose; if anything it is celebratory. And the method of presentation and quality of writing leaves the reader with one primary question: What if AIDS hadn't destroyed so many brilliant minds, so many unborn ideas? As a document on the effect of a devastating disease on the arts and as a resource book of what was happening in the forefront of culture in the 1980s and 1990s, this book will be the gold standard. Highly recommended reading - on so many levels.

This powerful, superb book is peopled with a sampling of the great and graceful artists who have been swept into eternity by AIDS. All of the essays are moving. Especially touching is the memoir which gathers together the angelic Paul Monette and the ferocious James Merrill. Brad Gooch contributes his best writing to date in his touching remembrances of his lovely partner Howard.

This book will break your heart and make you smile at the same time. It's truly a work of art.

Art serves many purposes both individual and collective. Compiled and with commentary by Lauren Ohlgren, "The She Project: How She Inspired A Community" is just such an example of art produced by a community of women that, taken as a whole, celebrates the lives and experiences of women who come into contact with each other in settings as diverse as bathrooms and hallways, waiting rooms and restaurants. Lauren Ohlgren founded 'The She Project' to reflect a community of women simultaneously and artistically responding to a provocative phrases (the 'She phrases') about women and their daily lives within the scope of two hours and within a size limitation of 8"x10". The artistic expressions utilized a variety and diversity of materials ranging from pens and paper, to old magazine images, to found objects, to paint and paper. The results as compiled and organized by Lauren Ohlgren within the pages of "The She Project" are unique, engaging, and as thoughtful as they are thought-provoking. "The She Project" is a very special approach to using art to express experience, and as such is strongly recommended for personal, academic, and community library American Art, Popular Culture, Sociology, and Women's Studies reference collections and supplemental reading lists.

"Urban Art Chicago: A Guide to Community Murals, Mosaics, and Sculptures," is both an excellent reference work and a beautiful art book. This volume, by Olivia Gude and Jeff Huebner, is a tribute to the neighborhood public art of the city of Chicago.

The book contains a short, but fascinating, history of the mural movement in Chicago. According to the authors, this artistic outpouring began in 1967, when 20 artists began work on the "Wall of Respect," a pictorial tribute to African-American culture.

The book is divided up by neighborhoods. Each section contains a street map, so you can actually use the book to find the murals that have been photographed. 125 murals are pictured in the book. These works of art span many themes and styles. Each photograph is accompanied by essential information about the mural. Also adding to the book's usefulness is a bibliography and a collection of capsule biographies of major artists in the mural movement.

It's hard to pick out just a few representative works from this magnificent collection. But my favorites include the following: William Walker's "Childhood Is Without Prejudice," with its interlocking faces of many races; Christopher Tavares Silva's "Soaring Toward Excellence," a symbolic, energetic celebration of books and education; Aurelio Diaz' "Latino Youth, Inc." mural, with its stunning pre-Columbian imagery; and Jeff Zimmerman's "Paid Programming," a visual satire in which the United States flag is morphed into a bar-code. But these are just a few of the eye-catching works in this book. Explore "Urban Art Chicago," and feel the rhythms of the people of a great city.

It also provides a great way to introduce Chicago cultural studies, geography, history, language, folk culture, multi-cultural studies, and art to students.
