Egyptian Rhythm: The Heavenly Melodies

a thorough understanding

Review Date: 2006-11-09
No one was able except M. Gadalla of a thorough understanding of the Egyptian spirit. Being of an Egyptian origin himself, he could trace the musical instruments available to the modern Egyptian people and track their diversity, origin and functions. Further, being originally a civil engineer he is versed in numbers and numerology thus identifying the meaning of numbers. Plato preceeded him in their significance to the Egyptians. But unlike Plato who was Greek, Gadalla grasped the Egyptian spirit and tries to fetch for a unifying theme which relates music to religion to mathematics and astrology. This book adds up to the other masterpieces of Gadalla. For someone seeking to read for a professional rather than an amateur here is one book indeed.

Theory and practice of the ancient Egyptian musical system

Iconoclastic Egyptologist Moustafa Gadalla's Egyptian Rhythm: The Heavenly Melodies is an amazing and impressive study of the intricacy of ancient Egyptian music, from the 24x7 Egyptian Musical Chart to its religious aspects and daily uses in life. Very highly recommended reading, Egyptian Rhythm details the theory and practice of the ancient Egyptian musical system, and is presented in depth for scholars and serious music study students, as well as the non-specialist general reader with an interest in ancient Egyptian culture and tradition.

Refreshing and well researched

On reflection, what were striking to the book were its clear and concise references elucidating hard and common facts. Standing on its own or as a companion to Moustafa's book Egyptian Harmony, Egyptian Rhythm is well researched and could fit easily into a school or public library for all manner of ages. Vibrant, the book shows a living and breathing culture of the Egyptians, often shown in modern and popular culture as an enslaving race, as a peaceful culture dedicated to the understanding of nature and its laws. Egyptian Rhythm is not just a guide on the `music of the Ancient Egyptians' - though it does certainly covers that - it is a guidebook to music itself not just as a hobby or business but as it relates between oneself and the world. "Rhythm means flow" Moustafa writes, this book explores that flow, the science of nature and of echoing its harmonies.

This book, like others from Moustafa Gadalla continues a tradition of retaining excellent chapter headings and an in depth index. Preface, is followed by explaining a few musical references and their standards and terminology, an Egyptian Dynastical Chronology, and lastly two maps of Egypt and its surrounding countries. Coupled with the text this book has an easy practical application.

The first part of this book - five in total plus appendices, glossary, selected bibliography, and a detailed brake down of notes and sources - explores the cosmology of music by asking of meaning which the Ancient Egyptians saw as the harmony of the spheres. Music like other concepts the Ancient Egyptians held strong to was that it flowed, not just into a sheltered system of memory repetition as it is nowadays, into other facets of their life. Moustafa presents with facts and research how music/spheres influenced their daily, weekly and yearly cycles.

The second part explores at core root beliefs of harmony, its application, representation and symbolism of the practiced musicians of Ancient Egypt. Modern musicians can easily find common symbolism and harmony not just in a purely mathematical/geometrical or memorized form but as it applies beyond the music to certain rhythms in life. The tetrachord, unison, the octave all have meaning beyond their direct musical implementation, and as such every page has an epiphanous quality more so in the hands of a musician than student, though if you're familiar with Moustafa's books the concepts behind the music will not be alien to you.

The third part takes formation of music and rhythm and explains the patterning used in Ancient Egyptian music, from song structure to scale harmony, the `how to?' of how such a culture implemented techniques frequently derived as of coming from Greece and heavily accredited to the Western World. A sceptical mathematician could check Moustafa's research (he clearly provides the maths & harmony) and be left wanting.

Part four clearly shows the vast quantities of instrument types used with the examples of what few instruments are remaining, current numbers have little part in explaining how broad the range of Ancient Egyptians' instruments was. From the Lyre to the Kanun (yes, Canon) Kithara (Guitar) and Clappers, four sections explain the four main groups; Stringed instruments (both open & stop types), Wind instruments, and Percussion instruments. The references to existing instruments and the level of detail researched on each would be hard pressed to find in any encylopedia.

The final part rounds off the implementation of music into daily applied life, in festivals, or simply public activities. Again as with the other chapters, clear illustrations from hieroglyphs and paintings show the Ancient Egyptians not just as drum beating primitive culture, but one that had and still has a high value to their belief and representational performance that exist purely fragmented in our own society's today.

Note should be made of the appendices. A small chapter in itself, Moustafa explores five topics that go to answer critics or academics further on the topic of music and its dilution from Ancient Egypt.

Westerners may have difficulty with agreeing with elements of Moustafa's exploration into music but the quality and consistency of explored facts without a selfish bias makes it impossible to denounce. Whether for musicians seeking meaning behind the concept of sound or for students of Ancient Egypt, or to a friend of family member, Egyptian Rhythm is an uplifting book of a vibrant and diverse culture that has respect and practise with the laws of nature and its observance.

The author has crafted a wonderful short piece that should be enjoyed by readers both young and old. The Western spirit of perseverance despite hardships and setbacks is gracefully woven between realistic issues of ethnic bias and socioeconomic struggle. A great quick pick-me-up, to boot!

The West is steeped in history and heritage that comes to life in Deanna McCall's story "Elena's Angels". A touching story of horses, horsemanship and hope, where persistence prevails and the good guys win. A story that leaves you with feelings of gratitude and bolsters your courage in staring down your own problems.

Periodically a story may cheat the reader out of a well-deserved feeling of euphoria at the end, but Deanna delivers in this one. The whole time I read, I awaited the obligatory dousing of the hopes I held for Elena and her father... but to my satisfaction, the story continued to get better throughout and left me with peace and understanding in the end. Thank you Deanna.

I have read some of Abel's previous work and "Eloquence" delivers as usual as a work of art. Mr. Pena is not only skilled in the fluidity of his writing but he encompasses such emotional depth and philosophical truth in all he brings. A new writer of our time. Watch out for this guy.

I was pleasantly surprise to read the wide variety of computing devices covered in this book. Not only did the author bring me up to date on the latest PC technology, he also covered PDAs, digital cameras, MP3 devices, wireless devices, scanners, practically anything I wanted to know about. Best of all Keogh explained how these technology work in a way anyone could understand it. Another advantage I found over other books is that Keogh provided an insight into the entire technology industry - company by company. I give this two thumbs up. Good job!

This book hit the nail on the head for me. A good, easy to understand guide to all kinds of computer hardware. I particularly found the author's treatment of PDAs, digital cameras, and mobile computing devices very useful. Most other books on computer hardware only cover PCs. This book covers PCs and nearly every kind of computing device on the market. I give the author two thumbs for covering more than PCs.

Computer technology is a challenge to understand. It keeps changing quickly and its difficult to gain a basic understanding of it. However, I think Keogh's laid-back easy to read writing style brings technology down to a level that the average Joe on the street like me can understand. He starts with the very basic concepts then gradually brings you into the latest technology without skipping a beat. I found myself say, "that's how its down. It's so simple why do they make it sound so complicated."
And best of all he covers digital video, digital audio, and other technologies that you don't think of as being computer hardware. I can't wait for his next book on technology.

If John Floyd was a three point shooter, he would be the guy that can still hit them five feet behind the line. If he was an actor he could play a Gladiator in one movie and play a sensitive, troubled math genius in the next.

But John Floyd is a writer, which means he can write different stories from way out there or right down main street and anywhere in between. He is a true craftsman with tremendous range and an outstanding storytelling talent. No matter where on the court he's shooting from or what the movie part is, his work is flat enjoyable. Bottom line, that's what so many of us readers are looking for isn't it? Oh sure you can come up with ten other superlative names and needs, but to me the word is simply enjoyment.

Folks, there are reasons why so many people buy John Floyd stories and books. I have listed some of mine but you'll come up with more. Buy it.

This story grabs you from the start, with thoughts of the movie "Pumpkinhead" following closely behind, and doesn't even release you at the end. Don't want to ruin it for anyone so suffice to say; A VERY GOOD read that leaves you wishing there had been more, but afterall it was an Amazon SHORT story, just wish the author would consider re-issuing this into a full novel.

Spectacular! Jon Sprunk's writing is tight and vivid, his descriptions ever so beautiful to read. Great tension, longing and fear permeate this tale that carries modest dialogue to capture emotion as raw as death. Jacob wants his daughter back - at all costs. He seeks the services of a half-naked shaman in the woods, and creates a legend.

I was new to Cubase so I started with the "Complete Idiot's Guide to Recording with Cubase", followed by the start up manual, then jumped to the "Fast Guide to Cubase 4". I would recommend this sequence to anyone new to Cubase. The Idiot's guide and start up manual got me through my first song, then the Fast Guide added a second layer of efficiency and detail. The Fast Guide is extremely well written--straight forward enough for the newer Cubase user, yet packed with enough detail to supplement the full-up Cubase manual as a reference for months to come.

Franz Kafka wrote "A book ought to be an ice pick to break up the frozen sea within us." Indeed, Hurka's journey to honor his father, learn of his father's heroism and suffering, and to learn about himself, was a journey into the interior chambers of the human heart that possesses vulnerability and passion. It is a book that is capable of thawing the frozen parts of us. I learned about the valor and pride of the people of the Czech Republic during the Communist reign, as well as the story of one man's heroism. The author wrote so beautifully, I am enticed to someday visit this part of the world.

Joseph Hurka has written a very touching memoir of his father's valiant fight against fascism in his home country. This rings especially poignant in the troubled times now facing America. I purchased this book the Saturday before the vile terrorist attacks on the Pentagon and World Trade Center. I began reading it, thinking it was a wonderful memoir of a bygone era. Now, post-attacks, upon my finishing this book I have a renewed sense of just how precious freedom is and what so many other people have been willing to do to secure it. Bravo to Hurka Senior, for all the proud fighting he did to do his part to keep the hope of freedom alive; we owe him and all those like him a great debt of honor. And also bravo to his son, this book's author, for writing such a powerful story of real heroism so well and so vividly. Truly, a joy to read, and in times such as these a must-read. I highly recommend this book.

Mr. Hurka tells the story of his father, a hero, with the rhythm of a poet. Unlike many sons who have written about their fathers, this isn't about that author. Mr. Hurka allows his father's amazing life to shine through his own talent as a writer and lets the reader get to know a true patriot hero. With his lyrical tones, the reader can only hope they will be allowed to know more of Mr. Hurka himself in a future book.

I have followed the three editions of this book from the positions of resident in Neurophysiology (edition 1981), "young specialist" in the field (edition 1993) and finally a consultant with some experience. Still it is a pleasure for me to read this book because of its very clear and logical approach. It will teach you to describe an EEG event, then to classify it, then to come to its diagnostic implications... Quite valuable for practicing EEGers. At the same time it gives you in concise form a lot of information you may fail to find even in a reference text. And there is the one author - one style advantage.
